Premiere Watch: The Midnight Studio

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: ENA
Genre: Fantasy, romance, healing
Episode count: 16
Global streamer: Viki

Reasons to watch: It’s as if ENA knew we were in need of a fun and ghostly romp, because that’s what they are offering with The Midnight Studio. Led by Joo-won (who happily seems to be having fun with enjoyable, campy dramas lately), Kwon Nara, and the hilarious Yoo In-soo and Eum Moon-seok, our team of four run the photo studio for ghosties where our story takes place. In addition to getting tagged for fantasy and romance, healing is also on the list, so I’m expecting a silly ride, but with some sweet and tear-jerking ghost stories on the side.

TL;DR: Joo-won and crew take photos of dead people and it looks like a blast

I think it will be too much heartbreak for my tender soul , ..but I'll Stiffen my Sinews and Summon the blood in order to watch my favorite Yoo in soo in just about anything (exception being "Death's Game"). Extra bonus is guest appearance by Seo ji hoon at some point. Can't wait to read recaps and comments from others 😀

Asianwiki thinks Han Groo is in it!!!! 😀😀😀😀 So I finally get to use a happy-face emoji. Haven't seen her for years, but Girl K was one of my favorites.

Han Groo will play the wife of the Eum Moon-seok character (he's one of the two ghosts helping out at the studio). She's alive and he tries to stay near her (I think??).

Oooh! Someone has a crush. She's playing Eum Moon Suk's wife.

I am happy Han Groo is back 🙂. She was such a spirited lady in Marriage Not Dating. Now she's a spirit 😅, but I'm just happy for her return to acting. Yeah, I want more Han Groo!

She's not a spirit - she plays the wife (still alive) of one of the ghosts (Baek Nam Gu played by the actor Eum Moon Suk).

I wanted to change my display name to "is getting photographed by Joo Won". Then I remembered the "status" of his clientele. 😳 😅

I just checked Viki in order to put this on my watchlist and it is already available! (9:30 am PDT) - about 12 hours earlier than usual. Perhaps because it is a "Viki Original". Wish I had time to watch right now - but I will learn to schedule my Monday/Tuesday mornings better in the future. 😊

Episode One watch.

I never understand the rules of Asian fantasy dramas, but they tried to explain how the original ghost photo studio came about (although I still don't understand what it meant/symbolized long ago).

Most of the episode was laying the foundation: Good explanation of Joo Won's character and why he does what he does. Decent explanation of Kwon Na Ra's role, but no details yet on her "power".

My boi Yoo In Soo was cute as heck (Park Dang-gu vibes) but his back-story wasn't described nor was the other ghost, but hopefully we'll get that solidified in Episode 2. Kim Young Ok plays the landlady and according to MDL, she is also Kwon Na-ra's Grandmother. She is obviously the catalyst (intentional) for bringing the two leads together.

One real tear-jerker story (unlike others, I don't watch scenes that make me cry a bucketful of tears so I FF to the predictable outcome). Which is my one concern about the show - how much focus on the tear-jerker ghost stories vs character/romance development and laugh-out-loud hijinks.

I'm a little worried about it going in the tear-jerking direction May I Help You? did - and I really hope it doesn't stray into the violent, murder-y territory where that one ended up. But I'm definitely tuning in for Joo Won, orange hair or not, and yay for Kim Young-ok!

I am worried as well, but my favoritist of all Yoo In Soo is here and OMG adorable as heck. As I said, Dang-gu vibes. I will watch to the end because of him, but the FF button is my friend.

I get the same vibes of May I Help You - a drama I dropped about 2/3 way thru because the romance took a very back seat to the ghost stories. And it's obvious that In-soo's character back-story will be bitter-sweet - this is so predictable but I can't turn away. 😂

There's definitely already an unsolved mystery--might not be murder, but there's definitely a missing person/father, and of course...[ominous plot point] revealed within the first 10 minutes.

I quite liked it...cried @kathryn51 's buckets of tears for her. On a plane. Wiped my nose on my sweater sleeve and everything.

I did get bored of May I Help You? for this reason. Somehow, it felt to me like the writer was holding a big sign throughout all the scenes, reading "cry now".... and that had the opposite effect on me! So, I'm hoping it's going more along the lines of Missing: The Other Side which took more time to establish all characters, both inside and outside the village and build relationships with all of them.

The high cheekbones brigade. Wow!
Anyway, I am onboard and will watch episode one today. This will be my first Joo Won drama. I have enjoyed Kwon Nara in the past.

In every drama with her, Kwon Nara has played the most annoying character possible. Let's see if her character in this is less so. I do like all the other cast and the occasional ghost-related kdrama.

the first and only drama I've seen her in is Bulgasal and she was lovely in it. quite captivating actually. I'm curious but also afraid to watch the dramas that she gets panned in.
