Premiere Watch: Dreaming of a Freaking Fairy Tale

Time slot: Fridays
Broadcaster: TVING
Genre: Rom-com, workplace
Episode count: 10
Global streamer: Paramount+

Reasons to watch: Our everywoman heroine (Pyo Ye-jin) might be dreaming of a freaking fairy tale with a token pompous chaebol (Lee Jun-young), but I’m dreaming of a freaking K-drama that can take our tried and true tropes and do something clever with them. Is this the drama that will do it? The promos (and posters especially) have been so extra it gives one hope that there will be an appropriate amount of satire here. And with a dud drama drama behind each of our leads (Moon in the Day and The Impossible Heir respectively), these two could definitely use a drama that reaches cult favorite heights. Goodness knows they’re both good for it, if they meet the proper script!

TL;DR: Pyo Ye-jin is dreaming of freaking fairy tale with Lee Jun-young

Does anyone already have a subscription to Paramount+ who can confirm that it's actually going to be available this week through that platform? Anyone in the US/North America? Anyone in the Southern Hemisphere?

Paramount+ is a channel that can be subscribed to (separately) through the AppleTV app. At the moment, it's not listed as an upcoming show there. But it might only show up on the day it releases, which amazon prime is notorious for doing. I'm keeping an eye on the comments on MDL to see what additional information pops up. If it does well, Viki might pick it up eventually too. I think it's a waiting game at this point.

...and they have a history of saying they'll broadcast shows, and then never doing it...

Ooh, good looking out. I'll try to confirm some eps are up before I take the dive.

Also, "Paramount Global and Korea’s CJ ENM Scale Back Strategic Partnership" https://variety.com/2024/global/news/paramount-global-korea-cj-enm-strategic-partnership-1236012747/

Like, the partnership ends June 19.

6

Wow, this end to the partnership does not make the situation seem stable at all. Maybe waiting to see is the best bet.

@attiton 😳 That doesn't bode well. On a side note, CJ ENM is another channel that is accessible through the AppleTV app. @marcusnyc20 and I had a bit of a chat about this last week in the Open Thread. THAT might be a streaming platform worth checking out for some older, harder to find k-dramas. Not that it helps here with Freaking Fairy Tale, but... just saying. Anyway, it really doesn't make sense for a platform like Paramount to try to get into the k-drama game at this point. Too late and not worth it for the very reasons we're all complaining about... too many places to subscribe and people aren't willing to do it. It's lose lose for everyone... including the production companies and viewers. So hopefully they ARE getting out of the k-drama game.

Just as a reminder, two upcoming TVING dramas QUEEN WOO and Lee Joon-hyuk’s DONG JAE are supposedly to be released on Paramount+. Really sorry that LJW’s drama won’t be available for me.

@sicarius,

The last time we were excited about a non-Joseon sageuk, we dropped out early. LOL
Should we hate-watch this one for the actors if it sucked? You have Gwi and I have my Beautiful Banker.

2

Fortunately, it's like, 8 episodes, which is far more doable, good or bad, or neither, for actors or for Three Kingdoms masochism. 😂😂😂

2

I can't see it up yet. It might be available tomorrow when it's released in Korea.

I read your attached ‘Variety’ article yesterday and was trying to fully understand it. All in all it may actually be good news. Paramount+ subscribers should take note.

Yes, it might mean that CJ-ENM stuff comes to a more popular service like Viki instead--but as @zindigo notes above, maybe they're just going to make us have to subscribe to themselves directly! 🤣

Look at the history of Kocowa (owned at the time by KBS, SBS and MBC). A google search tells me it was launched in July of 2017. Then DramaFever folded in October 18. The squeeze then was put squarely (of course imho) on Viki which came to some agreement with Kocawa to carry big 3 dramas which now is almost worthless.

Paramount+?!! 😨 *throws popcorn* Guess I won’t be watching this one.

At least the Lovely Mobster show is already promoted on Viki… 🦞🦞🦞

I completely forgot that that's not the actual title of the show and couldn't figure out why I couldn't find it on Viki's "Coming Soon" page. 😅 I'm ready for some Lobster hijinks!

😂
Viki has a habit of auto-translating stuff, which is why for me, that show’s now called “My Sweet Mafioso”. 🫣 I’d rather go with the lobster, too... 🦞

I'm committed to this drama, so I'm going to just get a month of Paramount+ to watch this and whatever else they have on offer in one go. I can afford $6 for a one-off month and then cancel right away. Will they release all the episodes or should I wait a week to line up with the end of a weekly release schedule? Anyone know of other dramas on there that are worth watching? A Bloody Lucky Day? Bargain? Yonder? Understandably slim pickings for reviews on DB, so maybe I'll have to add some after my month-long adventure!

Just saw that DB's schedule says just eps 1-2 are releasing this week, so I'll give it until the first four drop before subscribing. Don't want to have Paramount+ for more than a month hahaha!

They also have a 7-day free trial, so if you can wait until all eps are released you could watch it for free! I'm considering doing that myself.

It's frustrating how difficult it is to find k-dramas on random streaming platforms like this. The only other one that I could see on a quick scan was Pyramid Game.

I think my household may have already used that for something else, but I don't mind the small fee. The other dramas I mentioned were ones I saw in news stories, so I'm pretty sure about them. But you probably have to search really specifically by name, and if that doesn't work, try the actors' names!

For those in South East Asia, this is available on streaminG VIU every FRIDAY 11.30am release. Not too sure release of episodes thought 1-2 per week. First week is two episodes. Also available on cable network channel TVN ASIA from JUNE 01 every Saturday nights two episodes a week I guess.
