The Resident Playbook doctors will soon be in the house

Just in case there were any doubts, tvN’s first promos for Resident Playbook (working title) make it crystal clear that excitement is high for the upcoming spinoff, expanding the ~Yulje Universe~ started by the hit Hospital Playlist series.

Although there’s not much to learn from the new poster and teaser, it is a fun way to pay homage to the original cast, our beloved superheroes doctors who taught at Yulje’s main branch, played by Jo Jung-seok (Captivating the King), Jeon Mi-do (Thirty-Nine), Kim Dae-myung (Hospital Playlist), Jung Kyung-ho (Crash Course in Romance), and Yoo Yeon-seok (A Bloody Lucky Day).

We then quickly transition to the new fivesome taking center stage, with Go Yoon-jung (Death’s Game), Shin Shi-ah (The Witch: Part 2), Kang Yoo-seok (Black Knight), Jung Joo-won (A Model Family), and rookie actor Han Ye-ji playing first-year resident doctors and moving the story to Yulje’s Jongno branch.

The new medical series will also be shifting focus to the OB-GYN department, where we follow our newbies on the harrowing and sleepless road to becoming good doctors. Rounding out the world, we’ll soon be meeting the heads of their department with doctors Lee Bong-ryun (Sweet Home 2), Lee Chang-hoon (Delightfully Deceitful), and Sohn Ji-yoon (The First Responders 2) among other talents in the supporting cast as well.

With the original dream duo PD Shin Won-ho and writer Lee Woo-jung taking on creative roles, production for the new spinoff will have PD Lee Min-soo (Heartbeat) at the helm and scripts penned by Kim Song-hee. The latter worked under Lee Woo-jung in the Hospital Playlist series as well as Answer Me 1988.

tvN’s Resident Playbook is expected to broadcast later this year.

Me too! Also wondering what hobbies they will give them. Band practice? Camping? That was definitely part of the original’s charms! 🎸🎤⛺️
(The main attraction of course being their friendship. Aaah, such a good watch.)

Hwaiting! Yoo Yeon-sook is listed in the cast--perhaps a for cameo role?

With the "dream team" working on this project, I'm expecting this to be as good as Hospital Playlist 1&2, which is one of my all-time favorite shows.

In HP1&2, the Professors were the main plot line and the Residents were the side plots; now the reverse will be true here. By keeping "Playlist" in the title, I wonder if music will be incorporated in the new series.

Given the production team’s track record, I’d expect cameos from HP1 and HP2. This reminds me the 2010 drama Obstetrics and Gynecology Doctors that Go Jo Won as 2ML (ie Taemin in the current LYOL) and Song Joong KI in a scene stealing side role.

Go Jo-Won was the first ML in Obstetrics and Gynecology Doctors. I really liked him in this role. The drama was good.

It’s a very watchable drama. I think Seo Ji-suk is the top billing but recall neither ML gets the girl. Go Jo-won doesn’t seem to have aged and looks the same in LYOL as in O&G.

GJW always was the first mentionned one for the male leads and he's role was more important.

I just remember that he had a beautiful smile 🥰

I'm kinda disapointed that the original team is not doing it. The original PD and writer had a big part in the success of the original one with very talented actors.

What if instead of a music group, these ones also bond over a book club.

Honestly, I'm not too psyched for this one. A lot of things if not everything screams red flags and run away from this ASAP.

I'm not familiar with the works of any of the leads ditto their department heads as well except for Go Yoon-jung(AoS). I'm a bit calm that the writer works with Lee Won-jung. But the PD... I don't know cause I only watched 3 episodes of Heartbeat and it's not enough to say it is safe.

I've seen many residents-driven Canadian and American medical series. I just hope the cadre of actors picked to play the roles do not itch me with their acting. I hope this PD knows how to coordinate them.

Looks fresh and fun! Will they have a baduk team? jkjk. OB/GYN is right up my alley! Worked there as an RN for 21 years and loved it! Hoping it is as well done as the first one was!

hoping for cameos from Obyn team from main hospital, either Seok hyeong or Chu Min Ha is fine.
