Are there any newbie in workplace tips? Also how is being pushed to work over time by employers considered for newly hired employees? I think work from home already blurs those lines but where and how should one draw a line? Is “Can do” attitude the only way through?

    if culture is “can do” then the ones who are really able to push back are the ones who truly bring a difference (your skills –hard and soft, even at entry level)

    However, if you are new but on probation, keep your head low. If already permanent.. for one you could just change your signature to state your official working hours 😉

      Thank you for your advice 😊I believe the “can do” attitude isn’t all that realistic either. I did think I should keep my head low but doesn’t seem like I fully acted on it 😅

        Well.. just be aware of theoretical Vs pragmatic..

        Use your intellect and wit to handle this. Depending on which geography you are in and what the culture of that country/industry is… be realist, be pragmatic.. unnecessary bravado won’t bring you any luck either

    You’re job is 9 to 5….make it clear and set boundaries. Doesn’t matter how you do it, in person or over internet but job is to be done within specified time table. Set boundaries….over working won’t necessarily win you a promotion, its exploitative in most cases unless its a special, unique situation or important deadline is fast approaching.

      I agree with this so much!

      Make sure you make it very clear that you do not work after working hours and you do have a personal life and other commitments. Once you agree to it, they will expect you to all the time and it will get harder to refuse later so say No from the start.. if it’s important and urgent that’s okay but even then make sure they know you’re making an exception!

      Also, never let anyone take advantage of you.. your colleagues will try, trust me, but know exactly what your job descriptions lists as your tasks and don’t be forced into doing other people’s work!

        I agree that the boundaries should be set early on, it’s just hard to say that out when you’re new and this could leave a bad impression. Thanks for the extra tip too, it’s quite easy to place more workload on newbies 😅

      I tried to once respectfully ask for doing some work tomorrow instead of late that night, way past working hours. I am not sure if that has ticked off the boss for now 😅
      Overworking is so prized, it’s not a medal or a sign of someone’s dedication. When you’re working for yourself maybe putting in more hours can lead you closer to your goals but when it’s a job, you are basically getting nothing extra for spending more time. So I don’t think anyone at an entry level position puts in work to show their dedication, they probabaly do it to win their employers.

        I’d suggest getting there and working early than late if that’s possible and if you really need some extra hours in…but that is a matter of personal preference….I need good sleep and rest to function or my body doesn’t react well in the morning and that makes me tired throughout the day. And if deadines not in the morning in early hours, most things can wait.
