Kfangirl did a well-informed, relatively unbiased discussion of the SNOWDROP controversy. https://thefangirlverdict.com/2022/01/04/dear-kfangurl-can-you-talk-about-the-snowdrop-controversy/

Thanks for the article, Ally. I read this one, and then LTs and then the twitter thread and then the NY Times coverage (as limited as it was) of The June Struggle from 1987 and then basically fell down a history hole. From everything that I’ve read I still dont understand *why*. From what I understand (and I fully admit to understanding nothing–who can understand evil?) KCIA wanted to silence the *student* protestors so instead of just *doing that* (however thats to be done?) they kidnapped, tortured, and blatantly murdered student protestors and then said, gee guys, those were N Korean spies. But there were no spies, just evil people killing indiscriminately. I still dont know why though. What they were hoping to gain by all that murder. What they were hoping to keep silent. Did they think it would stop the elections?

Do you know, I had heard about the controversy but only in the vaguest terms. I wasnt paying much attention. I had been drama slumped, life was terrible and wasnt in the mood for much of anything. But I watched the first ep of Snowdrop. Jung Hae-In was in the thumbnail. Shrug. I watched it and loved it and said why are people so mad at this drama? Dont they see that smile? Dont they see those eyes? He was giving me Pretty Noona (before it sucked) heart flutters. But, to borrow LTs analogy. There are no witches, there were no spies and this feels like propaganda hidden behind a pretty smile.

I’ll keep reading and learning what really happened back then. But I’ll have to catch Jae In next time. Or maybe I wont. Im beginning to doubt his choices. It doesnt seem like he makes good ones.

You’ve read a lot! I’ve not gone that deep. I’m still waiting for Disney+ to allow me to watch this. Who. Knows when that will be—but you have me at Pretty Noona vibes. You know how much I loved him in that…

Controversy aside, I must say it really is a mess of a drama. 1h+ long episodes but neither the story nor characters are compelling enough to sustain this. The biggest question is not what will happen next in the plot, but rather what is the point of the plot?

I watched the first ep before I read the history and the controversy and thought the ep was cute–made me want to live in a dorm with those girls!–and the chemistry between Jisoo and Jung Hae In is decent. But he can make calf eyes at a deck of cards and the cards would bust into flame. So. (Ima bit biased, cant lie). I want to not watch it because of the controversy but is it really not good?

This isn’t my blog (although I have one too). It’s one I follow. She’s very prolific. I just do mine in my spare time.
