10 minutes into Love and Leashes, and so many unnecessary changes/additions already.😟

I expected some characters/plot to be cut for time’s sake, and I understand one scene being moved from the mall to outdoors because pandemic…that aside, just so many poor choices–two of which were a bit beyond just cringe worthy.

Overall, I did like a lot (especially what was true to the original). That said, so many unnecessary changes–with some definitely way off the mark of the spirit of the original. Sadly, such changes did not surprise me at all. This happens to our community all the time.

They made some changes but I didn’t think very many of them were that big of a deal… the core of the story being about accepting someone for who they are, being curious and open-minded about the person you like instead of being judgmental is still very much there, and valuing consent in any relationship (whether BDSM or not).

Sure, they changed some of the characters and plotlines, but it’s film. It’s much shorter than the webtoon, so some changes had to be made.

I don’t understand the idea that an adaptation must be word-for-word frame-for-frame identical to the source material.

For me at least, this isn’t about being word-for-word and frame-for-frame. It’s about unnecessary changes/additions for no discernible reason other than because some idiot exec thought it was “racier” or “better” without having any fundamental knowledge of the community portrayed.

As I wrote above, I expected changes, it’s just that most (not all) were in poor taste.

I haven’t read the webtoon so don’t know what has been changed, but I’m halfway through and really liking it. It’s sweet and sexy, and I really like both characters.

Having now watched the entire movie, I agree that there’s lots to like. I was just disappointed by so many changes that early on in my watching–and for no real world building reasons. Just typical higher up rando decisions.

I went into it with no reference point, thankfully. I thought it was a hoot and the message was clear. Now I may follow up with the webtoon. I’ve always found going from an adaptation of something written to a film etc disappointing. The other way works imo. But you can’t help it if you love something so much and then you see another interpretation and it sucks. Anyway, as a novice viewer, it was fun and funny. I liked that it moved so fast. I loved the lead characters, and I think the actors did a good job. The salacious old men were neatly put in their lurid place. The leads were assertive and ultimately not cowed by the reactions of others.
