Gosh I wonder if they also think that the tv from their home countries represents the general population. I think it would be really sad for the Korean men if they feel they have to compete with the fantasy men in order to get a partner but hopefully there are very few women in Korea or elsewhere who expect to live the fantasy life. I do think there are men in different parts of the world who love to take advantage of susceptible women. I also know there are women world wide who target footballers, musicians/singers/actors etc because they want the lifestyle of the rich and famous without earning it through their own skills.

@reply1988: it is concerning as fetishizing any human being or groups of them based on fictitious depictions and then travelling long distances to meet these figures of fantasy is mind-boggling to me. I have a friend of Korean descent who routinely reminds me how persistent and pernicious the desexualisation of men of Asian descent has been in the west and how jarring as well as bizarre she finds these women who have bought into this hallyu mythology of sensitive virility wrapped in tall and beguiling packages. She feels both of these attitudes fundamentally fail to engage with the ordinary humanity of Korean men in all of their strengths and shortcomings, and fears that once interest in SK’s cultural imports cools as it inevitably will, these same people will move on having learnt little about genuine engagement with and interest in what makes SK the place that it has become.

Yes she makes an interesting point the whole image management of different people groups is fascinating in terms of power dynamics and the long term impact. From the legislation that stole aboriginal children that had white fathers so they could be trained to be married off to white people to eventually make their offspring white to painting women of multiple origins as exotic sexualised beings the damage has been done.

That is why it concerns me that the male actors are being made to strip for unnecessary shower and outfit changing scenes and the women or school girls have shorts or mini skirts/dresses as part of their wardrobes as standard practice. Objectification is a concern whatever the gender and it seems to be getting worse.
