I really liked this scene. It played like a turning point in how she sees him – definitely more empathy there now!

Yeah. And I liked the ending of Ep 4 for this reason. He is so passive and takes a lot of shit from his family, but he is totally speaking out with her. It’s such a contrast and she sees it. It’s not like he can’t stand up for himself but he won’t. And it really bothers her.
And I too want to know why he thinks taking over the company is the solution to all this? What is his motivation really??

I really like your analysis, and I agree! I’m also curious – past its use as a plot point – why he doesn’t want the company for himself, when he’s obviously the most capable and has the best work ethic out of ALL the potential heirs? If it’s just a seniority thing (deferring to hyung), (A) hyung doesn’t want it, and (B) that hasn’t stopped other K-drama MLs 😂

I wonder if it’s tied to his ‘I killed my parents’ trauma/guilt – like he somehow feels responsible for also robbing his brother of a good childhood, so this is his way of like making up for it. And he doesn’t want it for himself because he doesn’t think he deserves it & also he’s deferring to the whole ‘elder sibling’ thing. Plus I guess it’s a way of safeguarding their future maybe? If Evil Half-Siblings are in charge, they might make life even more miserable for the two of them/cast them out etc. Maybe this is the modern day equivalent of a Joseon era consort trying to safeguard her kids’ future by battling it out for throne!

@lapislazulii 100%!!!! That makes so much sense to me based on what we’ve seen so far.

I also would assume given his mildly calculating brain that since his grandfather has been so cold to him and apparently more lenient to his older brother that it would be easier to get his brother to “own” the company and then he’d just assume he’d make it to VP or something and get to actually run in. Like he thinks his brother is his best shot at success.

@lapislazulii you are on a roll with all your drama theories today. This is so good. 👍

I think they all know Grandpa will never name Jihan (the show has established that Grandpa “hates” him, probably has something to do with his mother’s dead). And Jihan knows if his half-siblings are in charge, as soon as Grandpa is gone, they would make his and Dohan’s lives hell, even cut them off from the family (I imagine by then it would be difficult for Dohan himself to maintain his current art student lifestyle in freaking NY without family money). The only way to protect themselves is for one of them to take over, and since Grandpa won’t give it to Jihan, the only option is Dohan.

i actually thought that grandpa is protecting him; dad seems to hate him as well more than his hyung…

he was being chased because in flashback mom was telling him/reassuring him that they will be alright….mom and him in the car when accident happen..

fairly clear that dad got mom killed; grandpa knows it and is protecting the two kids by keeping them away and now bringing them back so that other family doesn’t evict them…

also think, our ML might have actually the evidence or memories of that murderer

there has to be a reason why grandpa easily accepted the law narrative on his daughter’s murder

@alasecond I definitely think their grandpa has a soft spot for Jihan and just doesn’t show it (potentially a misguided attempt at keeping him safe?)

I also think the grandpa actually knows Dohan is homosexual and is trying to keep that from coming to light – he thinks that by forcing him to get married it will “fix” everything. Sad, but I think he may still think that’s “protecting” his grandson from the public looks like. I also think that’s why he accepted Ah Jeong so quickly – he’s either clued in that she might also know or thinks that Do-han actually likes her and doesn’t want to give up this chance at actually getting him married. Not sure where inheriting the company comes in, but I’m sure time will tell.

Personally I think he’s living vicariously through his older brother. Whether he’s secretly scared to do it for himself or doesn’t think he deserves it or just thinks that’s the best calculated shot he has at getting what he wants since his grandfather is usually cold towards him.. but he’s pushing his own career goals, old relationship goals etc. on his brother. It just makes me feel like he’s trying to vicariously get the satisfaction of “having” that happen without actually having it himself.

Yes! I feel like she’s never actually hated him since she asked him to drink with her, although she definitely didn’t “like” him per se either. But after this scene and then especially when he talked about how she is his favorite actress and watched all her shows, I think she saw more than just his “I need to make you act a certain way” means to an end business exterior.

I’m on board with the Grandfather “knows” the secret and this being his misguided attempt to protect his grandson.

It just makes sense in the context of him telling the grandson to “wrap things up in NY”. It also makes sense with the ending of ep 4, if the person who showed up is who I think
