Watching Eye Love You and I’m so weirded out by how the male lead does not respect the female lead’s boundaries at all! And they’re very obvious – he should not act as he does in a work setting.

I’ve yet to hear anyone report back anything other than, “This drama is super-weird! Why do these characters behave like this??”

Sort of makes me want to watch, but then again, not. Are there any positive saving graces apart from Dimply McDimplesman?

Umm..tbh it’s like watching an overly cheerful and innocent 2000s romance with a female lead who can’t speak for herself, and a male lead who doesn’t respect her – not only does he ignore her express wishes again and again, but also, her asks are very obvious. She shouldn’t even need to say it.

That being the case, I think for me unfortunately Dimply McDimplesman is awkward and uncomfortable to watch. 🫠 I know he needs lead roles and I’m hoping he gets a better role in the next one, because I like Chae Jong-hyup too.

      I’d say..umm…I guess it’s a pretty drama?

Yes, good decision I have not watched J dramas that have a pantomime approach to storytelling. Sounds are used to emphasise things just in case the people at the back missed this bit is supposed to be funny. For example there is a nutty professor who overheats when he gets excited so has an alarmed device to remind him he needs to calm down. He keeps lurking in the background of the female lead’s dad care home looking sinister.

Wat? Lmao, jdramas are definitely the different level of weird. I remember watching this one jdrama about a girl who falls in love with her mysterious boss. The reason for his mysterious aura? He is dating his creepy little doll.

@nerdy I am so glad I have not come across that one😮 The weirdest one that I could not walk away from was Kakafukaka a young man suddenly becomes impotent and asks a woman in the house share to lie with him so he can give her a back cuddle to see if that helps wake things up. He was her first love. Gradually over time he is cured and asks if he can check if he is fully cured (unprotected as its a spur of the moment quick just in case its short lived). They are not in a fling/relationship at this point. She ends up falling in love with him again and they have a no commitment (from his side) long term relationship. There are second leads who also live in the house share.

It was awful, he had all the power as she loved him and I could not see what he was offering her. The risks re the unprotected were all on her and in this day and age who does that unless they are drunk or in a long term committed relationship.

@reply – about the drama with the impotent man…ong what did I just read 😳

I think this is a relatively common problem amongst Japanese media (anime and dramas). Many female characters exist solely for men. Some of my favorites are Naruto, Death Note and Attack on Titan and they all suffer from these flaws (AoT a little less so).

I know I don’t know why I kept pressing play other than my disbelief that it would keep going way beyond my worst predictions for how low it would go🫢

I agree some are truly ridiculous for their treatment of women despite the drama having a modern settings. The poor female actors must have to keep thinking ‘ it’s ok it’s just another mortgage payment drama.’ They must also be very grateful that there are so many of them so they can rest assured their bills will be covered year after year.

I’m actually enjoying it, but mainly because of how cute I find CJH. I think you really have put on some cultural glasses on this one. She is introverted and has sworn off dating. He’s like a golden retriever following her around. (And who doesn’t like those?) I took it as more innocuous than @greenfields how he’s approaching her. She does give him permission to act more like himself at work which is open and friendly. And even more open and friendly to someone he likes. I’ve watched all the way to episode 5, and waiting for 6-10 to drop on US Netflix—which may be a while since it’s still airing in Japan. I’ve only ever enjoyed Japanese BL’s and so took a leap of faith with this one because it was a Korean crossover. And I’m pleasantly surprised.

I am only watching for CJH too. I don’t know if he is trying to stretch his reach or if it is was a one off to increase his J audience for his K-dramas. He is doing great and I see a lot of the BTS and it looks like they had fun on the shoot. His Japanese must be excellent to handle being in another country for the length of the shoot and well done him to get a lead role in another country. I have watched up to episode six with machine generated subtitles which were particularly bad so I am waiting for the second batch to drop too even though 8 episodes are currently available. It’s not long now as it will finish airing in two weeks. This is the second drama I have watched with the half now half in a few weeks approach. Not sure if I like it because to binge and be left hanging is hard.
Do the BL’s also use this approach; having a very introverted character for the one being chased as there definitely is a type of J drama that uses this framework so I wonder if it’s a popular trope across the romance genres? I get the impression the BL scene is more established in J dramaland than K dramaland.
