Oh dear oh my… Hopefully this doesn’t turn into another drama with a subliminal body-shaming plot (yes, I’m looking at “Hello Venus” ugh)

May the hope stay young in your blessed little heart.
Based on the picture alone I’d say that definitely, this will be the usual kind of backhanded fatshaming. Alone the fact that she obviously is not fat, but wearing a fat suit …

I try… I try to see the good in things and give the benefit of the doubt before making a decision, judgement, or conclusion, but some moments, some things, some environments (i.e. the hollow feeling K-Ent. industry) makes it hard. This is the reason why I don’t do “idol” dramas anymore—the types of dramas with a “wash, rinse, repeat” type writing that are made for a quick ROI, just delivered differently, but still distinguishable— and stick to the quiet ones whenever I find a reason to go back to Kdramas, which isn’t often anymore

THe closest thing I have seen to a non-shamed chubby person is this guy from Secret Royal Inspector. He is put in situations that would normally be basis for shaming him, but he acts and is filmed so beautifully that he just seems beautiful to me.
In the very last part of the movie, summoning up what happened to people, the heroine laughs at him being unhappy and shameful … it’s totally not funny.
Likewise, the hero beats up a villain who is clearly a haunted man, tired, and actually on his way to accepting execution in return for making things right. These are two moments when it is really hard to accept the OTP as our heroes, honestly.
I put this link to imgur here, because the gif persistently was removed from DB.
And then my post for the whole show with … like 3-4 gifs about this sweet guy. Also, early on, he is dressed like a woman as a disguise, and he acts beautifully, and though the girl he pretends to be flirts, she does not flirt in the usual vamped way reserved for woman who the audience is supposed to find completely undatable; she seems scared, but graceful and fresh like a summer rain.

The way the actress is talking about putting on the fat suit reminded me of Gweneth Paltrow when she did Shallow Hal. “In 2001, doing press for Shallow Hal, Gwyneth Paltrow spent a lot of time talking about the fat suit she wore to play Rosemary, the film’s romantic lead. She spoke in particular about an experiment that she and the film’s makeup-effects designer had undertaken to test the suit’s credibility out in the world. At a fancy hotel in New York, Paltrow donned the fake weight. She walked through the lobby. She walked to the bar. She noticed how people looked at her, and how they refused to. “It was so sad,” she told one reporter. “I didn’t expect it to feel so upsetting,” she told another. “I thought the whole thing would be funny, and then as soon as I put it on, I thought, well, you know, this isn’t all funny.” And yet, she did the movie and it made fat jokes throughout.

Putting on a fat suit seems like a version of Mickey Rooney playing a Japanese man in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I wish they would stop doing this.

Compare this to Bridgerton Season 3- Nicola Coughlan as Penelope. Just saying. There is a better way.

      💯 there are better ways
And the fact that Gwyneth Paltrow even thought it was was in the first place— regardless if it was before or after her experience— says a lot to me about her and her thoughts, at least, about this one particular situation

In stories where the person is supposed to put on and/ or lose a lot of weight I can understand the rationale for wearing a fat suit. But it is not a good sign, and I haven’t really seen it performed respectfully yet. I mean, Shallow Hal was supposed to be about how it’s what inside that counts, and that was partly shown as her being slim on the inside. I mean …
      Rant follows.
And Yes, Nicola Coughlan looks adorable and very kissable.
Also, Rebel Wilson – she has charisma enough for at least three or four people. Maybe forty. I was so bummed there were a good deal of “eating and being clumsy” jokes in especially Pitch Perfec; and also that they paired her up with that insufferable tenor, when she is clearly a snack, before and after her weight loss. It didn’t have to be a Hemsworth; it could be …. uhm … ideally the kind of “bad boy” that is not so much perfect looking (I’m thinking, crooked teeth, … you know, imperfections … young Pierre Clementi or something) as more just totally has “it”, and is unsettling so you don’t know if he will be good for that girl. But he would be for her, because she wouldn’t be so easy to unsettle.
I would have loved to see something like that.

I wanted to say “especially Pitch Perfect 2”.

In American television, the one good example I can think of wherein a curvy person is being treated and respected right and in a healthy manner is the character of Penelope Garcia in “Criminal Minds”. This example comes to mind as I’m actually binging the series on Disney+ . At the same time, it could be looked at differently in the sense that her smarts (computer genius for the FBI) is a way to “compensate” for her being curvy person, because for 98% of the tv series run, her character is physically portrayed as just sitting and working behind a desk and in front of a computer and not being out and active in the field with the rest of her team, even though she is still VERY loved and respected by her team members
The interpretation of her character and the TREATMENT of her character could go both ways depending on the person 🤔

As long as she is not depicted as eating all the time, I think “fat person having an office job” is not terribly discriminating.
Like, I loved Brooklyn 99 and it was super modern in a lot of ways (sexual orientation, POC, … ) except a big NO when it came to fat. It was as if Andy Samberg was gathering all the 1980’s stupidity in one account and using it all up on fatshaming Scully and Hitchcock.
