Falling down the rabbit hole of Asian Boss. Korea sounds like a hard place to live in all honesty, but there are so many people working hard to make a difference.

Even the woman interviewing him couldn’t keep from weeping at the end. I was right there with her.

Such a good man.

Sorry for such videos that might make you cry – but this shows the strength of love in the human spirit. May we all be as strong and committed…..

    It takes a village to raise a child is not an exaggeration.

    The norm when I was growing up was that it was not unusual for a neighborhood parent to take the kids home after school or if we had to leave early for some reason.

    Hell, most of my classmates had 2 parent homes and still needed help.

    @stpauligurl,
    What a horrible catch-22 of infernal bureaucracy. Kim Ji-hwan-sshi is a taxpayer — so why is he being discriminated against in this way? How utterly unfilial to have onerous regulations that prevent a parent from accessing social welfare programs on behalf of his own child from the time she was born. (If mom had died in childbirth and were unavailable to sign the danged birth registration papers, would he also be up a creek?) If there were better mental health care and support for women with postpartum depression, the family might still be together, and this dear man would not have been reduced to abject poverty and contemplating suicide. It is heartwarming to see him helping out other single parents now that his own situation has improved a bit.

    After seeing this, it doesn’t surprise me that the ROK birthrate has dropped so low.

    This video sheds sobering light on the reason why Dong-baek’s mom put her in an orphanage in WHEN THE CAMELLIA BLOOMS, and why Seo Woo-jin’s bankrupt parents took such desperate measures in ROMANTIC DOCTOR, TEACHER KIM 2. Art imitates life. For some reason, I cannot get “Hero” (IT’S OKAY, THAT’S LOVE) and “Carry Me” (LIVE), both by Family Of The Year, out of my head after watching this.

      LOVED this! I remember that song but never saw the music video.

      This man’s story is really a testament to how low a person’s spirit can sink and rise up again.
      It was so hard to see the discrimination against single dads. Yes that is hard to imagine…
      But he is an amazing man and I have no doubt his daughter will grow up to be just as amazing.

        @stpauligurl,
        I’m so glad I happened upon your links to the ASIAN BOSS videos. Like Kim Ji-hwan’s account of single fatherhood, the NK defector interviews with Kim Pil-ju and Sunny(?) are testimonials to the tenacity of the human spirit. I cannot thank you enough for posting them. I like to think that a couple of “low-flying angels” contributed to Mr. Kim’s panhandling, and gave him hope as well as donations.

        I’m glad you enjoyed the music. I found out that the two brothers in Family Of The Year are from Massachusetts, so no wonder this Beantown native likes their sound. 😉
