Why Episode 38 is one of my favourites… #ArsenalMilitaryAcademy

^And no, that still image isn’t from Episode 38, lol, but I like that image, so…

It all started with this scene and this episode continued being one of the most heartwarming!

Xiang Xiang was dragging her feet back to the academy after the long night she had had with Junshan. Her worry that he found out the truth about her identity loomed over her.

Yanzhen waited for her return and his face lit up at the sight of her on the campus ground. He tells her that he’s got food upstairs for her. She smiles and runs up the stairs.

This scene is great for a couple of reasons:
    1. Junshan witnessed that there is more to Yanzhen and Xiang Xiang’s relationship than fight each other day and night. That there is more to their relationship than yelling and arguing.
    2. We see that Yanzhen and her little room with him at the academy is her home. Her place of comfort. The sight of him telling her he’s got food for her made her feel relaxed and cheered her up

      Well said !

Xiang Xiang didn’t seem too worried that Yangzhen knew her identity. She’s always been comfortable and herself with him.

Once Junshan knew about Xiang Xiang or once he started to pursue her as a girl / as Liangchen’s sister, she changed. She used to be in awe at him and trusted him well. But she is now much more reserved and careful in front of him.

Yes, agree. And I did not like that Junshan made her run around the town – from the academy to the girl’s school back and forth, changing from man to women’s clothes vice versa – just so he could go on dates with her. He knew she wouldn’t say so and he took advantage of her secret.

And then there was Yanzhen, who ran around the campus, did a lot of crazy antics such as shower scene and making a scene with Li Wenzhong, just to make sure her secret was safe.

Junshan’s love for her made her situation uncomfortable. I’m disappointed that he turned out to be this way when he fell in love, but again, it sets as a reminder that Yanzhen was the better man for Xiang Xiang.

Aw, her face lit up when he called to her. I think I know why you used a still from another episode… Yanzhen waiting for her at the door like a married couple. He’s her home. For his part he looks totally at home with her family in Beijing.

          3
          1

Huehhehe yep! Yanzhen waiting for Xiang Xiang to come “home” is a favourite of mine. You see him complain whenever she leaves him, but he doesn’t follow her around like a stalker to see where she’s going and what she’s up to. He is always waiting for her to come back.

The scene at the Xie residence was very heartwarming. It was brief but I loved every bit of it. I imagined, in an alternate universe, it was not a turbulent time and people were living pretty much a mundane life. And then there is Xiang Xiang and Yanzhen having some quality time together with her family. It’s very domestic. I like my own alternate universe.

I also liked that bit from episode 41 where Mama Xie asked what Yanzhen would like to have for lunch. He answers anything will do. She says they’ll have Sichuan cuisine then. Xiang Xiang interrupts her and casually answers on his behalf as she gets the door that he doesn’t eat spicy food. Like ooooh my heart 💘 There’s something about how she answers for him because she knows him that moves my heart. It’s little things like this that this drama gets me.

Yup, I never considered Junshan as good pairing with XiangXiang no matter how hot he is 😉 She always looked up to him and he remind her of her brother and that some unhealthy power dynamic in relationship, whereas with Yangzhen they are equals and she has no problem to tell him off or stand her ground.

That scene from Episode 6 where he carried her on his back was a good foreshadowing on how Xiang Xiang saw Junshan. Right from the start, he was a big brother figure to her. I thought about it but she had never once said to she liked Junshan romantically; this was purely based from Yanzhen’s assumption.

When Junshan said he would “court” her, she was the confused about her feelings for him because she didn’t know how to love someone romantically. She never experienced it before. When that is all clear, that’s when she realized it she only saw Junshan like a brother.

And yes 100% on Yanzhen and Xiang Xiang as equals. This is why I enjoy their fights a lot; they look like ordinary couple having normal arguments to me. She’s reserved and mostly keeps everything in to herself (like Junshan!) but when Yanzhen riles her up, she fights with him to no end. We see sides of her that only come out when he’s with her. Their dynamic is great because both can say yes and no to each other comfortably.

Outside this love triangle arc, Junshan is a great man. I love that when he “conceded”, he admitted to Xiang Xiang that she’s more comfortable with Yanzhen than him. And how he knows she would be more honest with Yanzhen than him.

It’s interesting that Junshan’s teasing devil came out once he found out she was a girl, like stripping and asking her to put cream on his back or having her run around town.

However, his joke went on for too long. Yanzhen teased her but soon told her that he knew she was a girl. There are no secrets between them. Junshan kept it a secret so he could go on dates with her. Still. He’s a great guy outside of the love triangle, I agree. Ji Jin agrees too. 😆

P.S.: I’m still mad we got 5 minutes of Junshan ballroom dancing and none for the OTP back in Ep. 16 (I think).

          6
          1

Yep, I didn’t mind how he wanted to “court” her at beginning. I thought it was cute that he wanted to court her like any man would at their time – ie Huang Song brought her food and would to see her whenever he could.

I thought he would court her the right way. What a disappointment that he made things difficult for her because he fell in love.

Yanzhen teased her but soon told her that he knew she was a girl.

It made me remember a scene after they helped out Manting for a night and became servers. The following day Xiang Xiang told Yanzhen since she helped him with Manting’s case, he better keep her secret. He gave an exasperating reply that he had been doing that since the beginning. Ohhhh his efforts that that go unnoticed 💔

And yeeep I’ll be forever bitter about that dance cut. 💔 Somebody left a reply on that dance cut video saying how it was a low key scene – with no audience compared to Yanzhen/Manting and XiangXiang/Junshan dance scenes. It was just them dancing in that room and I swear I heard my heart crack again! 😭

I was appalled by what Junshan ordered her to do with her shirt and I’m glad that Yanzhen called him out for it. He had no right to tell how she should wear her clothes! This is one of my favourite scenes because it sets as a reminder what a great guy Yanzhen is. He had never once told Xiang Xiang what do, what to wear and how to wear her clothes. He lets her be comfortable in her own skin, in her own clothes.

He had never once got too controlling with her either. Even when he asked her to stop seeing Junshan or would put his arm out to stop her from going, she would still leave him and go to Junshan. She had freedom to do what she wanted, and he’s left either whining or sulking about it. Bottom line is he never overstepped his boundaries with her just because he fell in love with her.

      Totally agree !
Yangzhen has been very respectful. Super annoying and a troublemaker. But very caring and respectful.

      1

Yes! He knows when to joke and when the jokes stop. She’s always been a priority to him. In the scene before this, he noticed that something was wrong with her; she was acting weird. He pays attention to her too much; his love hurts me good.

Huehhehe same! I really liked that the show made a clear stance on this love triangle by showing how different these two men are. It’s compare and contrast which is the better man for Xiang Xiang, and of course Yanzhen wins by a landslide.

I’m glad that we get to see what a great man and perfect he is for Xiang Xiang. I mean it’s a given that he is, but when the show makes it a point to tell you how and why he is, it’s such a great watch!

🤣🤣🤣 I love how he’s always there witnessing all these exchanges.

I really enjoy how the writer doesn’t forget about Ji Jin and have him be in serious situations like this, hard judging and funny, yet it never takes away from what the writer is trying to come across with these situations!

Yep! And I like how he tried to have some pep talks with Junshan after this exchange. He was like what’s going on between you and Liangchen. Okay, He’s concerned but yknow he loves gossips to be in the loop with stuff too LOLOL

Oh yes, he’s a great little gossip LOL. It’s funny how he tries to stay cool even though he’s cracking up or shocked, and misunderstanding everything.

Junshan totally went alpha on her around this time and I was uncomfortable by how he controlled her and took advantage again the fact that he knew she couldn’t say no.

So Xiang Xiang moved out of their dorm, but to my surprised, I couldn’t be more thankful now for Junshan’s alpha-transformation on her!

She is deeply missing him!!!!!!!!!! 😭😭😭 The room felt incredibly big now that she’s got it all to herself. It’s eerily quiet too. She’s missing the chaos in her life.

    7
    1

You know what you said about ‘home’. So powerful. Yanzhen and that room was her home. She had no secrets there and she was completely being herself. And she was happy. Suddenly someone came and moved her and she didn’t even have a say. And Jushan did it ONLY after knowing he is a girl. Until then rumors of her and Gu didn’t bother him enough to make a change. Exactly the kind of guy I would stay away from.

And I am glad it happened because she realized how much she misses Gu and how he is a big a part of her daily life.

      5
      1

Yes!!! I liked she got homesick fast and realized how much she took for granted her moments with him. We tend to not realize what we have until it’s gone; so they say.

I believe that little exchange he saw – Yanzhen waiting for her with food – alarmed him. He was suddenly not comfortable knowing that these two are actually close especially when no one is looking. Oh, what else could they be doing behind closed doors? Now that he’s fallen for her, everything that she’s doing at the academy is wrong! 😣

        4
        1

I hated Junshan for abusing his power like this, and thought that Xie Xiang covered up for him by telling the furious Yanzhen that she had requested changing rooms.

I may be wrong, but is this also a sign that Xie Xiang is falling in love with him but is confused and tired of the love triangle and tries to retreat? Of course absence only makes the heart grow fonder.

          4
          3

but is this also a sign that Xie Xiang is falling in love with him but is confused and tired of the love triangle and tries to retreat

When you say “him” – are you referring to Yanzhen?

I personally think that she said it was her decision to cover up for Junshan. We all know Yanzhen’s temper. He’s definitely not gonna back down from this especially it involves her. But if by “him” you meant Yanzhen and how she wanted to get away from the messy love triangle, I’m thinking about it – you could be right. Huang Song wondered why she wanted to leave their room fast without even waiting for Yanzhen and she didn’t answer. Perhaps she wanted to leave on her own accord too to give her “space” to think things through.

So I went back to a couple of episodes. Episode 38 – Junshan asked her if she disliked him and he wanted to tell her that he wanted to date her but she interrupted him. Xiang Xiang said no to him in a heartbeat saying she’s too young (lol this “too young” Running joke is so funny).
In another scene, Xiaojun, who is trying to psychoanalyze Xiang Xiang says that she thinks she has feelings for Yanzhen and that is why she’s scared of Junshan courting her.

In episode 31, when Yanzhen confessed his love and told her nobody could stop him now, I find it interesting that she didn’t say anything at all nor did she get flustered like what happened when Junshan “confessed” and immediately told no he can’t. She didn’t even pushed him away when he hugged her. She always feels embarrassed of his display of affection in public, but I don’t know she outright rejected him.

            5
            0

Yes, by “him” I mean Yanzhen! Sorry about the confusion. I think she was worried that the guys would fight and probably get her in an even bigger mess, so she covered up for Junshan. I’m saying that although Junshan engineered the room change arbitrarily, it was her decision to go through with it.

I also think she took the chance to have some time alone and think… Girl is receiving a lot of attention from the two guys, plus Huang Song (poor guy with a crush). Personally I’d run away too, for a while at least.

            4
            0

Yes I agree with you then, that in a way she took this Junshan’s forceful chance to step away from the madness that is going on around her.

One of the heartwarming scenes to me was when Xiang Xiang realized her true feelings for Yanzhen and it happened because of that button…

Their separation is slowly making her realize her feelings for him, but I found it fitting that it was this little thing – her button that she nonchalantly told him he could keep as his birthday present – became the last straw to stir her heart. What she said was of little importance, but Yanzhen took it seriously. Everything she said and did, even what if it were nonsense, mattered to him. His love runs deep and she can finally see how serious he is about her.

I thank Junshan for separating them because now she’s realized how much Yanzhen, the man who created chaos in her life, had taken up a space in her life. He is her beautiful disaster. Life is empty without him.

    6
    1

When I saw the button, I had completely forgotten about it (just like Xiang Xiang did).
Then I let out an Awwwww…..😍
Then I thought… 🤔 Geez, Gu Yangzhen… You took that button out of my her jacket! 🙄 *rolling eyes*

      5
      1

Same! I knew it went missing but we didn’t see him keep that button until some episodes later, so it had completely slipped my mind that he took her words seriously and literally plucked that button out of her jacket! LMAO. What a simpleton he is!

But acccckk! Look at how this has come full circle 💘

This hospital scene was such a great contrast from Episode 22. This time around, Xiang Xiang’s eyes were only on him the moment he stepped into the room. She never broke the eye contact. Her attention was fully on him.

All that matters to her at that moment is Yanzhen and how dishevelled and exhausted he looked because he was looking for her. My bb girl is in love 💘 And I love that she is in love with Yanzhen 💘 💘 💘

More than worry I think she now exactly knows what he went through. Worried for her searching for her. Now she doesn’t doubt his love for her. I loved how she reassured him saying she was ok. She wanted him to calm down.

Yeeeees, it’s so cute how she’s like firing him with questions (have a sit, are you hungry, what do you want to eat, do you want to go home and sleep) and he doesn’t answer because his mind is all a mess.

I loved how she reassured him saying she was ok. She wanted him to calm down.

Yes!! I really like that part too and how she said thank you to him *Cue OST with lyrics “ so grateful in this life, you’re here with me” and broke me* 😭
