Beanie level: Rooftop room dweller

Welp! Lee Jang-woo just appeared in the novel! He’s the cutest!

Also, Eun-seob likes to smile/grin by himself (he does this way too many times). I’m undone.

\”Eun-seob, who\’s wearing a parka, took off his helmet and gloves and under the light, his unkempt hair was exposed. In a short span of time, they both felt their hesitation about saying hi or not to each other at the same time.\”

Kyaaaaa I can\’t translate it as beautiful as how it was written but for some reason, this scene made me giddy.

This is so sweet!! And I’m so glad to learn EunSeob is just as SKJ has portrayed him. This feels so much like him.

I kept imagining the drama so it works so well with the book’s descriptions and SKJ is definitely perfect for Eun-seob! The story is a bit different though. They’ve changed quite a lot of stuff.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:

I swear to God, Seo Kang Joon wasn’t acting in that drama— the guy IS basically Eub Seob 🥺🥺🥺❤️❤️❤️

    1
    1

He definitely is! I wonder if he’s read the book before going into it. I know he loves reading and I can imagine him taking it seriously to be Eun-seob-like.

      1
      1

Hmmm now that you’ve brought it up, I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually did read the book way before or when he received the roll ☺️☺️☺️ Seo Kang Joon is known to be a bookworm 🐛

        1

It’s funny how I’m having such conversations about SKJ now. I avoided him like the plague before. Hahahha

Read Zombie Kid and Boy Who Fed On Nightmares to my school age kids and they were surprisingly very interested and liked the story despite the grotesque drawings.

Well Dr. Seuss had even weirder stories and illustrations if I remember correctly, but I loved them. I think kid brains are weird 😅

    2
    1

You’re right. Dr. Seuss has weird drawings but they look quite playful with the colors and them being silly rhymes.

I was amazed at how intently my kids listened and they looked like they were actually affected by the story.

Seriously though, Oh Jung-se deserves all the awards in the world.

Absolutely! Him so proud of himself and reading his book to his mom, gah! I cried right along with him and laughed too!

Same! I was enjoying the story but he started sobbing and my heart and eyes just gave in.

I wouldn’t be mad if KSH loses the baeksang to Cho Seung Woo (Well it’s hwang shi mok we are talking about who is played by CSW, might as well give him an Emmy for best international drama), but I will be enraged if they don’t award OJS. He was absolutely phenomenal.

    1
    1

I dont remember much about FoS but I wasnt so impressed by JSW there. I mean he was good but the character didn’t require much or at least didn’t quite touch me the way Gang-tae did. It will be different depending on his performance for S2 though.

OJS was hands down amazing. I couldnt imagine anyone else playing Sang-tae.

      1
      1

Gang Tae is definitely more relatable and touching than HSM but CSW did a good job at delivering the jargon in a natural manner which is why he gained praise back then.
Let’s just hope all those tears will win another award for KSH 😅

What surprised me though is that Hae-won is an art teacher in the novel. Why did they change it to music teacher??? Eun-seob is still bumbling cute.

11
3

I’ve put the drama on hold, but my guess is that somewhere down the road PD-nim wants to insert a moment where or when Eun Seob and Hae Won connects thru music, because you can’t cast Seo Kang Joon in a melo without giving him a moment where he will play the piano at some point in time 😂😂😂

    2
    2

He didn’t play it but the drama is very nice.

The drama is very low key and I liked that it wasn’t predictable. The acting is memorable and I loved all the small town characters.

Nice! I liked the drama too, but only upto a point. I felt the characterization could have been more consistent, especially with the FL, but ah well. Keep us posted on this!

They’re so beautiful! Could you show us some pages, please?

    3
    2

That was quicker than I thought! Considering how everyone is like, “Oh, expect delays when you’re expecting something from overseas or sending something overseas”…. How long did it take, exactly?? I just want to know because I’m planning on mailing something to a friend who lives in SK and I’m wondering how long it may take (while she’s a Canadian citizen, her husband is a U.S. citizen who’s also serving in the U.S. Navy and has been deployed to S.Korea, and of course, she followed him ☺️)

    Happy reading!!

Ohhh least liked dramas? Count me in! These are ones I actually watched, a couple I dropped close to the end.

10% – Big
10% – Lie to Me
10% – Mirae\’s Future
10% – Missing You
10% – She Was Pretty
10% – The Legend of the Blue Sea
10% – Secret Garden
10% – Ohlala Couple
10% – Hit the Top
10% – Another Oh Hae-young

I vehemently disagree with one of them (it’s one of my happiest watches). Mildly agree with one so 10%. Most of the rest I didn’t watch or dropped immediately.

    1

Only 10% (AOHY) but because I haven’t watched most of the others.
She was Pretty was okay-ish. PSJ’s character’s arch was pretty dissappointing. The rest I haven’t seen.

    2
    1

I was really disappointed in PSJ’s charavter too. Sadly, it wrecked PSJ for me and havent seen him anything since.

      1

Big and Mirae’s choice are I think objectively in the top 10 for worst dramas in the 2010s, and I Miss You may be in that list as well. In hindsight I Miss You left things so unresolved, that having Yoon Eun-hye’s character suffer what she did felt so gratuitous even in the land of contrived plots, to the point of anger for the drama having gone there in the first place.

Legend I thought could have used a 16 episode count, but aside from YFAS comparisons, I thought it wasn’t so bad? I certainly thought TKEM was much worse, not to mention Faith..

    1
    1

Interestingly, Yoon Eun-hye’s dramas are a total miss for me.

Yeah, Legend dragged and maybe I just had too much expectation from the YFAS hype and it all felt flat. I havent seen TKEM so I got nothing on it.

Three of the dramas have Yoon Eun-hye as the FL xD

20% Lie to me (only the Cola kiss was worth it), the Legend of the blue sea (not because my sweet Jun Ji Hyun).
But I really loved Another Oh Hae Young! Ohhhhhh 🙁

A Poem A Day

나랑 나랑 by Lee Jang-geun

I’ve realized how hard it is to translate Filipino poems into English but here’s today’s poem 💙

Today’s poem:
In A Crowded Place, I by Na Tae-ju

11
5

    Thank you for sharing!

I don’t know what its original context was, but your choice of poem hits home harder than a lot of things for me personally today: it’s nine years to the day since my mom passed.

    1
    1

It was from a poetry book and didn’t really say what it was about. Who knows? The poet must have gone through the same. I feel like the power of poetry is with timing. It becomes meaningful depending on what you feel the moment you read them.

I won’t pretend I know how it feels and that I know what to say because I don’t. I’m glad the poem might have comforted you in a way I couldn’t.

      2
      1

Of course, I understand 🙂 no worries.

I agree with you about the power of poetry! There’s also something about poetry in non-English languages that captures sensibilities in ways that English-language poetry does not. It’s a combination of cultural context and the evocativeness of the native language itself – translations do not always do them justice.

Inspired by your efforts at translations on your fanwall, I’ve been teaching myself hangul and trying to pick up words, so that I can appreciate the nuances of the dialogues (and poetry, when the occasion arises!) better.

        1
        1

I agree! My native language is Filipino and poems in that language speaks to me like no other can. It’s tough because no matter what we do, the emotions cannot be translated. It’s always better to read them raw.

Yay for learning Hangul! It really helps when watching dramas and understanding the context presented in dialogues that English can’t express. Have you see Deep Rooted Tree by any chance? It is about King Sejong the Great and the promulgation of Hangul. It really gave me a deep appreciation of Korean letters.

I’ll post the original poem with the translations next time I post^^

          1
          1

Same with me – the only language, besides English, that I read with some degree of fluency (though not as well) is Hindi. As a child I crammed most of the Hindi poetry we were taught. But as an adult, I began to appreciate the sounds of the language and the sentiments expressed much better. Especially because they all seemed so familiar.

I began Tree with Deep Roots, but left it for some reason a few episodes in. I have always intended to return to it. Will do so soon! Thanks for the reminder. 🙂

Yes, it was going to the the first time he was the first lead. It’s why I watched it. Thankfully he followed it up with two where he did get the girl.
