I’m so glad the linguistic information on “geoshigi” and its parallel with “da kine” in Hawaiian pidgin was of interest to viewers of TOP STAR YOO BAEK. I’m supplying my original posts on the subject (below).
Many thanks to @laica, whose comments on my fan wall prompted me to track down Mr. X’s insightful article on Lee Jun-ik’s sageuk comedy films. Mr. X cites the use of satoori in the movies to emphasize the historical rivalries between various regions of Korea that still exist. I think it’s interesting that MAMA FAIRY AND THE WOODCUTTER was also awash in satoori.
It’s not just the speakers who are humorous, but the listeners — who reply with the exact same words, but inflect them in wildly differing ways. It reminds me of the classic Abbott & Costello sketch, “Who’s On Third?”.
