46th Baeksang Arts Awards

The 46th Baeksang Arts Awards were held on March 26 in Seoul, which is one of the biggest awards ceremonies in the industry, in both television and film. Only, this year I’ve got to say my reaction at the winners was mostly: WTF, Baeksangs?
I understand some of the awards. Go Hyun-jung (above) winning Daesang (the Grand Prize) on the television side for Queen Seon-deok, yeah. It was either going to be her or Lee Byung-heon, in my opinion, so it was also understandable that they threw Best Drama to IRIS since it didn’t garner the Daesang — even if I think IRIS is totally not deserving from a purely artistic standpoint. (If you were expecting Chuno to sweep, I’m actually expecting to see it more next year, with Baeksangs being a little behind the current television landscape. Even though Chuno did win for scriptwriting. Now, if it misses next cycle I will be confused.)
I even understand how Jang Geun-seok won a popularity award in film (Itaewon Murder Case) even though you’d think his wildly popular television drama You’re Beautiful would have been a better fit — but the television popularity award went to Lee Seung-gi, understandably. But Yoon-ah for popularity for Cinderella Man? I know I know, that’s a netizen vote and Yoon-ah has her SNSD fanbase, and she led Yoon Eun-hye and Han Hyo-joo in the votes… but given the overall dreariness of Cinderella Man — and the fact that the same fanbase couldn’t buoy that drama’s low ratings — an award for that role just seems weird.
Then there’s Newcomer winner Kim Nam-gil, who had a breakthrough performance in Queen Seon-deok, but he is most certainly NOT a newcomer. Dude made his official industry debut in 2003! He had significant (if supporting) roles in at least five dramas and has at least seven film roles to his credit. Yes, this is a way to give him an award without challenging Lee Byung-heon for Top Excellence, but come now.
Awards are often heavily political, but I didn’t think Baeksangs would produce such puzzling results. I mean, Queen of Housewives for best DIRECTING?

Kim Ah-joong (Accidental Couple) and comedian Lee Hwi-jae were the MCs for the event. She looks pretty, if a little bridal.
Ha Ji-won (My Love By My Side) won for playing the wife of a dying man, though she also had another big film in the past year, Haeundae, which picked up awards in other categories. I love how she always looks sexy and chic on red carpets.
Ha Jung-woo (Take Off) has had a string of hits, and here he is with co-star Kim Ji-suk (who looks crisp in white) and film director Kim Yong-hwa. I’m surprised at how well Kim Ji-suk pulls off the white suit, actually, given that it could so easily look cheesy. I’m actually a fan of his hair, too.
Choi Kang-hee (Aeja) is either pouting or gaping in the majority of her photos, which makes it hard to find nice shots. The uniform beige color sort of washes her out, especially without strong makeup, but she will cut you with those fingernails.
Jang Geun-seok (Itaewon Murder Case) may be wearing what looks like a sparkly smoking jacket, but considering his red carpet history this is decidedly a win. So cute.
Jo Ahn (LIfting King Kong) picked up a newcomer award. Not so hot about the dress (it’s cute) but I love her makeup. Pretty and pink.
The hair, the hair! (The bowtie! The cuffs!) Okay we get it, you’re a rockstar and you don’t care that the noonas find you adorable, Lee Min-ki (Haeundae).
Kang Ye-won, Lee Min-ki’s Haeundae co-star, sparkles in her dress, but it reads kind of matronly to me.
Love this girl. Park Bo-young was last year’s newcomer winner for Speed Scandal and she’s adorable here in a sweet pink confection of a dress, although I swear I’ve seen this dress at another red carpet.
On the TV side, it’s no surprise that Go Hyun-jung was the big winner; this makes two Daesangs for her portrayal of ambitious villain Mi-shil in Queen Seon-deok.
Han Hyo-joo (Dong Yi) has this way of looking elegant with a hint of awkwardness, and I mean that as a compliment, since it gives her a fresh sort of appeal. I think it’s her slightly gangling limbs; in a few shots she looks like a startled deer. A polished, glam, startled deer. I do think the proportion is a little off in the dress, though.
Kim Nam-gil (Queen Seon-deok), you sexy bastard. Check out that look in his eye in Pic #1.
The kelly green is a pretty shade, but I was perplexed about the bright bubblegum-pink lips until I saw the full-body shot for Kim Nam-joo (Queen of Housewives). But matching or not, coordinating lips-to-shoes does not excuse the clash in my book. (I would’ve loved this look in a black, silver, or even gold shoe.)
Lee Byung-heon (IRIS) always looks sharp and confident. I sorta feel like they gave IRIS the win to make up for throwing the Daesang to Go Hyun-jung instead of Lee.
I suspect some will hate it, but I absolutely loved this tangerine/sherbet color on Sohn Ye-jin (Personal Taste). I love the color more than the shape, though.
Sohn’s latest co-star, Lee Min-ho (Personal Taste), is looking a lot more comfortable on the red carpet. Remember how Lee Min-ho was so awkward and stiff-looking last year in his plain suit and with the red-carpet fall? Much more put-together this time around! Our baby’s growing up.
Lee Min-jung (Smile) is so pretty. I’m not a fan of the dress, which I don’t think does much for her, but the overall look is nice.
Lee Seung-gi (Brilliant Legacy) looks okay if kind of plain. He did win a popularity award, so yay for him.
Here’s the thing about Moon Geun-young (Cinderella’s Sister). Sometimes “eat a sandwich” comments are snarky and bitchy and not made with a helpful spirit, but with Moon, I really really don’t like seeing her so thin because it looks scary and wrong. It’s particularly pronounced with her because, as the Nation’s Little Sister, we’ve all seen her growing up over the past decade and we know she wasn’t always so skeletal. This makes me sad.
Hwang Jung-eum (High Kick Through the Roof) has this tendency to make Scary Eyes. She’s one degree below its more-fearsome cousin, Crazy Eyes. Despite that, I like this look on her, even though I keep seeing it as a ’70s-inspired jumpsuit rather than an evening dress.
Seo Woo (Cinderella’s Sister) is going for pretty and sweet, and I’m not a fan of the dress — it looks sloppy with the asymmetry — but I can see that she’s going with the cute, innocent image of her upcoming Cinderella character. And what better place to promote the image than the Baeksangs a week before your premiere, right?
This has been a huge year for Shin Se-kyung (High Kick Through the Roof) and I think this gown is a fab choice for her. I would’ve made her the pic at the top, only she didn’t win anything, and you can’t argue with Daesang! She still seems shy on the red carpet, but I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of her in the future.
Uh, WTF So Ji-sub? This is like Gu Hye-sun coming to an award dressed in Jan-di gear. I get that he came in character for his Korean War drama Road No. 1, which he is currently filming — but for the Baeksangs, really? The drama doesn’t air for three more months, so promoting it here seems premature. Perchance he came directly from set and had no chance to change? (Wishful thinking?)
I love this simple, strong look on Sunwoo Sun (Will It Snow For Christmas). It really works with her height.

Yoon-ah (Cinderella Man) sort of reminds me of a Barbie Doll, especially in the last photo. Which I don’t mean as a bad thing.
There was a good amount of pink on the red carpet, and Hong Su-ah‘s (My Precious You) is one of my favorites.

My favorite's HJW's overall look. Her black gown was simple and plain, but she pulled it off like a goddess, as always. Hair and make-up awesome.
I also love SYJ's orange outfit too. The color may be a lil bit off, but hey, not everyone can pull that one off. I love the design and how the dress accentuated SYJ's figure. She's always fabulous.
Guys, they're all pretty much the same. Well KNG did look really SMEXY, but WTF with SJS's outfit? Man I love you a lot, A LOT. But....
And on the winners' list, sighz.. sighz. Jang Hyuk was totally snubbed by the awards. Had a very bad feeling before watching that LBH would get it, but I hoped that it would prove me wrong. For JH was the BEST in the list. Someone mentioned that Hyun Bin was equally snubbed too, for not getting a nomination. I CONCUR! If I had to rate the best performance from an actor I've seen last year/early this year, it would be a showdown between JH and HB. Urrhhh... such a bitter taste..
But oh wellz, awards are rigged anyways. Star power, management influence... why do I get so involved all the time? Sighs.

..though I don't like yoonah that much, I'd have to agree that she looks pretty on her dree...but why is it that whenever I see a pic of her, her head is always tilted to one side?.....
..plus i saw some other pics of the baeksang's and i saw a lot of breasts almost spilling out from their gowns...do they really have to squeeze the gowns that tight?....seriously!!...8 would look good if 8 just made d breast look bigger but it didn'T!...8 didn't look attractive at all....

i've been watching my name is kim samsoon over again (i didn't like it much the first time around, but i just bought the dvd set for my sister, who loved it) and i like it much better this time haha. anyway, kim namgil was in it!! he played a doctor friend to both hyun bin and jung ryeo won's character. when i first saw him i was like waaaaaitttt... is that you?? haha a dramawiki investigation confirmed my hunch :D
i think shin se kyung looks gorgeous, but the fact that she does act so shy ALL THE FREAKING TIME really gets on my nerves. in the sitcom, in interviews, etc. i'm a girl but i really hate it when girls act like jellyfish with no spines
i love moon, can't wait for cinderella unni. but she IS really thin, could use about five pounds. i personally like being super skinny, but moon looks positively fragile. you can look super skinny AND healthy.. :(

Yay for Choi Kang Hee winning! I loved her in Aeja- it was an amazing movie.<3 So was Lifting King Kong, and we see Jo Ahn here. (: And Ha Ji Won. Woooeeyy Ha Ji Won can pull off any look any time. But yes, Moon Geun Young looks so skinny :/ Maybe it's for her drama.. but she needs to gain some weight.

I'm sad that Yoon Eun Hye lost the popularity vote. At one point, she was only trailing by 1% behind Yoona. I mean, Cinderella Man wasn't even popular. As for My Fair Lady, it wasn't really a big hit, but the ratings managed to stay pretty good (part of it due to YEH's popularity...)

You know, I am not one to hate on anyone at all or throw cheap comments, but I do have to agree with you with Yoona winning the Popularity Award for Cinderella Man. For clarification, I am not saying she's a bad actress or that she doesn't deserve the award, but the fact that I don't understand why she would be awarded for her role in Cinderella Man. I would consider myself a great fan of Kwon Sang Woo but even that isn't enough for me to ever consider him a Popularity Award for his role in Cinderella Man.
I don't get it. Who votes the Popularity Award? The fans? If so, I guess it's understandable but it's still a little surprising. I would think Park Shin Hye would at least be considered for the Popularity Award for her character in You're Beautiful.
Anyway, I don't really like Son Ye Jin's dress! She's usually more fashionable and better dressed or maybe it's just the color. Ha Ji Won's choice was surprising but still manages to pull it off and look sexy. So Ji Sub, no comment. What can you say to someone who dresses like that unless you just came straight from a movie set and absolutely did NOT have time to change. Joo Jin Mo looks sexy and Moon Geun Young looks great even with her weight lost! So what? She lost her baby fat but as she doesn't look unhealthy.

i agree with the recap,..i personally think that Kin Nam Gil isn't a newcomer,although he is really good in QSD..but,come on,the title is 'best new comer',if you have done several dramas before,so it's not worth to call you a new comer.In my opinion,Lee Seung Gi shoud've get the awards considering he's only got a few drama in his hands and also he's a singer anyway,..so it's a remarkable thing for a singer to do such a great job in the case of acting.
IRIS??oh come on,I know it's all over the news about how big the drama was even before the release,but is it too much just considering the hype?chuno would've a better choice for winning best drama and actors.as for the script,i would say Brilliant Legacy is good choice for winning it since the drama has a moral aspect and seems like it's carefully written.

i was totally thinking the same thing when i was watching this today through re-broadcast
i was like wtf yoona for cinderella man? that drama got single digit ratings!
also jang geun suk for his movie???
i thought the lee seung gi fans were kind of rude but i mean they're crazy fan girls... i think idols in general are kind of overrated. i mean lee seung gi's great and all but he definitely wasn't the best out of all the other people that were eligible in that category!
kim ji suk should've won something and i don't know how i feel about jo ahn winning or hwang jung eum... i feel like people did better in other films/dramas
but i agree with some of the bigger awards. ko hyun jung was extraordinary in her performance and i expected her to win the grand prize. same with ha jung woo. i know he was up against some of the bigger stars like won bin but he kicked butt in that movie!

ermm about the dashing Kim Nam Gil being a newcomer...So ji -sub won last year The 45th Baeksang Arts Awards: Best New Actor (Rough Cut) and definitely he wasn't a beginner either
They should gave him an award in the past...Miindo was 3 weeks in a row in the top of the box office, No regrets was very well received by the critics in Europe(but Mother was very well received overseas..so its not that), Public Enemy last year received the Daesang..I've seen Goodbye solo just because KNG was in the cast- Soo-hee how could you do leave such a sexy lost puppy...he will bite you-and he did..but damn the ratings again, and in Lovers as Tae San...OMG YES PLEASE I want some more....
he was all the time that sexy but the media just didn't noticed him... he still doesn't have a site or fan cafe in english...you hardly can get some news about him....maybe if someone remembers about the overseas fans(like the Easten Europe, Asia Minor or Middle East fans)--but wait this is the big problem with kactors...language barrier..and all we want are some infos
Joo Sang-wook-beside that his role was a small one...who could see him when you look at the screen with a Magnifier searching for BiDam(Kim Nam Gil), and the cast was really handsome Lee Seung Hyo is another cutie pie,Yoo Seung-Ho sweet like honney, Jun Noh Min sexy ahjussi, Baek Do Bin=muscle boy..Uhm Tae Woong...the screen was full with testosterone!Joo Sang-wook was just another handsome on the silver plate...we didn't have time to think about his acting
So Ji-sub' s costume..first time I've seen it I thought he was on a military leave(dunno the technical term)
I loved Shin Se-kyung's gown
Iris...erm I'm trying to watch it...but after 3 days I'm at 7th ep and it doesn't work, instead other dramas(especially KNG's dramas I marathone one in a day )
With this drama I've learned that muscle act(yeah right) but I didn't mind....I like sexy half naked men...but doesn't keep me focused on it- throw with stones in me but LBH is good but not that good,but I fall for Jung Joon Ho and the boybander from Iris

damn....Ha Ji Won looked so damn hot...Go Hyun Jung looked great as well...I would have prefered QSD for best drama...congrats to Kim Nam Joo but YoonA for popularity!?! I saw Cinderella Man and it blew chunks...she sucked...Lee Yo Won or Han Hyo Joo or gong Hyo Jin....but again damn did Ji Won look hot

No matter how much IRIS is not live up to the hype but no one should ever argue how terrific LBH as an actor in any production including IRIS. He's just so natural and charismatic eventhough i never find him good looking.. but he sure a hotteee

Lee Byung Hun deserved the best actor award...no doubt about it.Dont think he win it just beause he is damn famous now w IRIS but he is the most versatile charismatic actor.IRIS is nothing without him.

Abt JGS 's popularity win for Itaewon-- it was decided by his korean fans to devote their votes to the movie category vs the TV one, as apparently, in korea, being a MOVIE actor has more clout and gives more respect than being a TV actor. Anyway, methinks that it would have been a very hard fight with LSG's fans if they had chosen to battle it out in the TV category.

Best: Shin Se-kyung. Her gown was just gorgeous and it suited her very well.
Thumbs-up: Kim Nam-gil. He just oozes charisma wherever he goes.
PFFFT, High Kick Through The Roof won best entertainment program? Call me biased, but the show's ending turned it into crap. It succeeded in catapulting many new actors into stardom though. I look forward to seeing them in future projects!

a lot of the awards given in Korea seem more to do with money made than anything to do with 'artistic merit' , certainly so in music and Tv shows. I do not know much about the film side of things.

I actually went to check who Kim Nam Gil Played in BSGS since I didn't quite remember him and realized he played GS's young husband and also added to the confusion he went under a different name back then. Seriously DAMN when did he get so sexy.

When will Korean people start to think more to the quality than quantity???
High rating and popularity is good but its become worse when u use that to credit people an award for what it seem other people deserved it more...
