Baker ends on a high; Kiss hits new low

KBS’s heavy ratings winner Baker King Kim Tak-gu ended its 30-episode run on Thursday with its series high, stopping just short of 50% with a finale rating of 49.3% and (I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say) a happy ending. Alas, that meant series lows for both its competitors, who will no doubt be breathing a huge sigh of relief with Baker King out of the game.

The numbers weren’t too bad for SBS’s fantasy-romantic-comedy My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho with its Episode 12 recording a 8.7%. It’s a definite dip, since the drama has been managing double digits thus far, but a single drop on a major competitor’s finale date isn’t too dire.

It was much worse for Playful Kiss, on the other hand, which keeps dropping with every episode. Its Episode 6 pulled in a disastrous 2.8%, its lowest yet. Furthermore, it is showing a worrying trajectory: 3.5%, 3.7%, 3.5%, 3.4%, 3.0%, 2.8%. Just when you think it couldn’t possibly get worse, it drops a little bit more.

So, what does this mean?

First off, expect to see a LOT more of Baker King‘s stars, particularly its young male leads Yoon Shi-yoon and Joo-won. (Ladies Lee Young-ah and Eugene will also benefit, but the boys were less known coming into the drama — particularly Joo-won, a virtual unknown — and will feel the effects more.)

Second, there’ll be added interest to see if successor drama Runaway will be able to uphold the huge head start given to it by Baker King, though I don’t think it’s any use trying to correlate their fanbases. I’m more interested in seeing how much the other two dramas improve, because even if Runaway pulls in phenomenal premiere numbers (as in, 20% to 30%), that still leaves a large group of the viewership free to switch the channel.

On the other hand, Playful Kiss is now being touted as a 16-episode drama. I had seen it described as a 20-episode drama earlier, although perhaps it was one of those shows that was always intended to decide the length based on audience response (some dramas don’t announce their run length concretely, leaving room to adjust accordingly without going for an outright extension or cut). But in any case, its successor show — Kim Hye-soo‘s My Happy Home — ha now announced its premiere date as October 27, which is the week after Kiss airs Episode 16. My Happy Home had originally been announced for a November premiere, so looks like it’s been pulled up.

I enjoy watching Baker King, but not as much as My Girlfriend is a Gumiho and Playful Kiss. The later 2 really put in a fight this week. My Girlfriend should have just ended that way...perfect happy ending on the Wed episode. Playful Kiss had the monumental kiss scene this week, but feels a little rushed and I'm not digging the wavy hair on Baek Seung Jo. Hope the ratings pick up next week.

its really sad for PK to have such low ratings. There are many people who are watching and actually liking the drama. I don't know why korea is turning a blind eye to PK. Maybe it will pick up now the rating ogre baker king is over.

omo! seriously.. something is not right here. i don't get how is it that PK is getting such poor ratings! i mean i personally think that the drama was realllly GOOD! the cast are just perfect. Jung So Min is adorable. i find that she pull off as Kotoko wayyy better than the girl, Ariel in the taiwan version (btw, i havent seen the taiwan version but i've seen the anime) as the girl is kinda annoying from what i've seen from some of the videos in youtube. i head over to youtube right after i heard about this insanely low ratings to see how is it that the taiwan one be any better and it turns out it wasn't that good. That's 1 thing i don't get. or is it that the female lead in PK not viewers' liking? i say she's perfect for the role. i'm sure every1 is ok with the lead actor, KHJ. i had a feeling that some are being hard on Jung So Min? idk.. i'm just saying. besides, a plus point in the drama is that it's a very sweet yet captivating at the same time. some even complained bout the kiss in episode 6 saying that they expected more like the taiwan version? oh come on. seriously..don't compare. the kiss was stiff so i don't think that ppl should complain. Maybe ppl are expecting so much from the drama and since that it's kinda pedictable viewers tend to not watch the drama? Tell me bout it. i initially wanted to watch Gumiho but somehow i do think PK would be a better drama. Another thing, don't any of u find that it's weird that this drama has low ratings knowing that it's directed by the same director of BOF and Goong? i was totally bummed that this drama is gonna be narrowed down to 16 eps. I really wish that MBC would reconsider it bcoz 16 ep is just too little even 20 ep itself is already little compare to the taiwan one. so i'm hoping that viewers would find an interest and liking to this drama and help raising it's ratings (esp to any koreans who are reading this) . :) Feel free to send in response to my comment. i would like to what extend that u peeps would agree with what i said. thx.

BOF just rode on the other versions success especially the Japanese one. Indeed the movie which closed the story, released some months before Kversion and the movie (like the drama) was big hit everywhere in Asia. Therefore BOF aired at the right time when people missed HYD.

About PK (5 years after ISWAK), that's true that the show was overhyped everywhere way before airing but through what I read, felt and saw the main problem about this version (and this is the essential thing about Itazura na kiss story) is KHJ and JSM chemistry does not shine or grab the way the taiwanese version did.

Well.. people will like what they like. There are some local dramas in my country that I can't stand, but get high rating anyway. And I'm not liking where all this "international vs. korean viewers" argument is leading to btw. KHJ fans + PK fans UNITE!! Bashing each other is not gonna raise the numbers.. people.

Hmmm.. Group 8 should know their market before they attempt to sell to MBC a drama targeted at a specific market on a completely unsuitable airtime slot based only on the strength of KHJ's popularity from BOF. I'm not happy that PK is saddled with the title of 'the drama with the lowest rating in k-drama history' category. Had it been aired during school holiday with no godzilla-like drama in another channel munching on all the rating-goodness, it could have at least earned a 10%+

What's wrong with ahjummas liking plot-heavy dramas over cute-yummy predictable PK storyline? (although I did grumble about it in my blog too when PK rating dipped last week). Anyway.. I like the cute-yummy predictable storyline.. was giggling helplessly through the entire 6th ep. Oh, let's not worry too much about the cut episodes kay. It's already making new trends.. what with the jdorama-like pace (which I don't think I've experienced from a kdrama b4), the free online series, online viewer participation on future episode's plots. If the rating had been satisfactory.. all these innovative moves on the part of the production team would never have been attempted. So, stay cool.. *peace*

I enjoyed Baker King, and I'm only 18, no where near much of an ahjumma. On the other hand, I don't adore Playful Kiss. However, I do like My Girlfriend is a Gu-mi-ho. MGIAG has much more chemistry between the leads, the actors/actresses are holding it up, and it's ..heartwarming. PK has a lovely storyline, in manga. The actors/actresses are adorable, but there's.. not much to grasp at.

I do hope all ratings rise.

From what I heard, BK appeals to ALL age groups. All generations are watching it, that accounted for the high ratings. The acting from all the cast are good ,overall a very well produced drama with a good story. Pk has its appeal, but please do not bash BK just because the Korean audience preferred to watch it.

if PK story was fun and original im pretty sure the ratings would be higher but everything is so predictable that in all honesty it just makes it a boring drama. plus KHJ's acting is still bad, it has improved but it is still bad.

On the other hand, i really hope MGIG will benefit from the end of Baker King..that drama is amazing! i really hope they would extend it to a 20episode because i LOVE it :)

i ws kinda expecting PK to get cut down ever since the first episode ratings came out and MBC has an amazing track record for cutting down dramas...lol....so i guess i'm not way too hurt with that bt story wise i think we may not get into their marriage and all that...it might just end at the point where ISWAK ended...i just hope the pace picks up at the rate it has since the first 2 eps w/o too many fantasy sequences and what not which is essential if they want to end the drama at least at that point....i think the ratings are more of a reflection of the competition's success and PK has had undeniable success online why else would they want to do a special online series?...hopeful this fact will keep the morale of the actors and producers up

true that PK is rather a predictable drama but can u guys just give don't try to pin point every single weakness of the drama? well, u guys could just sit back and watch the drama and i can ensure u that it is not actually as bad as what u all assumed it to be. what's wrong with a remake? Taiwan can make remakes but not Korea? give it a lil thought. imagine that this director never made a remake of Hana Yori Dango, we wouldn't even been able to watch the korean version of it. and trust me.. wouldn't it be rather boring and dull with all the ahjumma and ahjussi dramas? whoa.. can't even imagine that. try be a little more supportive of this drama. u guys haven't seen the more of it yet and how can it be boring and judge the drama? i'm glad that the drama has more of the anime vibe. though the taiwan one was a huge hit but taiwan is taiwan version and korean is korean version. oh btw, the casts are just perfect for the role of Oh Ha Ni and Baek Seung Jo. i think the reason why KHJ was chosen coz he pull off as the quiet yet caring character in BOF which suits the role of Baek Seung Jo. Jung So Min is new. Give her a chance. so far her acting is great. no joke. is it just me or the netizens are spouting nonsense? oh nooooooooooo brainwash?? lmao. really.. i know how scary netizens can get. XD

"u guys haven’t seen the more of it yet and how can it be boring and judge the drama?"

Don't tell me you've never given up on a drama. The way you're saying it, why are you bashing on the "ahjumma and ahjussi dramas"? If you really want to voice your opinion, you should really see how it can be interpreted as.

Yeah, the leads are playing their role. He's cute, she's adorable. But if it just doesn't grasp the audience, then it just doesn't.

Even though I think PK isn't going to surprise me, I'll still finish it. No need to talk about crazy netizens not liking the drama, because since they have low expectations, we might be pleasantly surprised when something does happen. It's a two-way sword.

Anyone who wants to watch PK, will.
I am watching, waiting for a surprise kill it would give me.

If Baker King Kim Tak-gu had not ended this week and would continue on for a few more weeks, Playful Kiss would be looking at the possibility of becoming the lowest rated k-drama in history. Saved by the bell I guess.

But on the bright side, PK did manage to sell broadcast rights to 12 countries.

Bk was ok to me. not bad..but PK isn't that bad either eh? koreans might not like the drama but there are tons who are anticipating for the drama. since u've been watching the drama, i could tell that u might actually like it coz if u hated it so much u could just stop watching it. :) there's new scenes in the drama too. not a total "copy and paste" of the anime then. good thing. :)

"Anti" Tak-gu merely because I choose to be consistent about using AGB ratings? That... boggles the mind. I've consistently reported on Tak-gu's high numbers and had nothing negative to say about the show.

I used to use TNS numbers way back when, but realized that it's difficult to get TNS numbers for dramas out of the Top 20. So if you're comparing a very high show with a very low show, it's better to use one media source rather than mixing numbers. For instance, TNS doesn't even have PK numbers for the last episode because they're so low. (They are definitely not 8%.) Plus, AGB numbers come out hours faster than TNS. Hence, I have chosen to be consistent rather than just picking one or the other or favoring whichever numbers come out bigger.

I know everyone wants their favorite drama covered, but we're not TRYING to be everything to everyone...we're just...US.

I watch Takgu. Mostly because it's on every time I go to my mom's house. We discuss the characters, the food, the makjang.

Lack of recaps or coverage does not mean lack of love. It means lack of TIME. And even if it does mean less love, then so be it. We've never been secretive about our tastes. You're free to love what you love. And so are we.

Actually, PK's episode cut will probably help move the plot along. I haven't watched this week's yet, but so far the episodes are a little too slow, making it hard to sit through for an hour. I feel bad for the production though since the fanbase behind Itazura na Kiss is so huge, this was supposedly going to be a guaranteed hit, but I guess the fact that it's a Wednesday-Thursday MBC drama still doomed it. Well, there are other factors, but you'd think that MBC, after being in a slump on that time slot for so long, would put in a bit more effort on those dramas.

Congrats to Baker King though, it's hard to get those kinds of ratings nowadays. Maybe I'll get around to watching it one of these days

I think PK is okay, as cliched as it is. I actually kind of like it; it's predictable, but with that youthful feeling that I've always find myself liking in spite of myself in K-dramas. Somewhat like BOF, it was lacking in substance, but it was young and I LOVED it.

I don't know if this is true or not, but apparently, eventhough PK's numbers are dismal is Korea, it's getting great response from the international market. So I guess there is still hope yet.

Hi Fridaygirl,

Thank you for the TV ratings' update. I am disappointed to know that PK scores are much lower than before. :( It's too bad. I was anticipating that its rating would go up, unfortantely, it got worst based from your report.

I think Playfull kiss Korean Version is much much better than the Taiwanese drama both in terms of actors, their acting, and plot. The girl in the Taiwanese drama, no offense, overdeed her acting as dumb and stupid girl making her look like a retirded girl already, which is no fun to watch. That's also the reason why I never like the PK Taiwanese version. I think Oh Ha Ni's acting is much much better and natural. She portrayed the character perfectly, look stupid but not a retard.

For the male lead, I think KJH oppa is faaaaarrrrr better looking and could act better than the male taiwanese actor.

I think there is just something wrong with the story in PK korean ver, it needs more action, more details to awkward scenes that could make even the viewers crawl under their skin, and more torried kisses. Yep, the torried kisses were actually what kept the viewers of the Taiwanese version loyal to the series.

I was a little bit disappointed with the first kiss of KJH and Oh Ha ni in Episode 6. It was like a grade school kiss. I was anticipating kissing scenes just like the kissing scenes in personal taste or goong s.

I hope the next kissing scenes of PK are more lively and realistic than a sweet effect one. We are already sugarly sweetened by the story itself, we need some spice! Hello PK SHOW! Please Revive YOURSELF!!!!

I will be looking forward with your next rating report dramabeans. Kuddos!

yay! for Baker King's ratings and i'm glad it's finally over.

I've watched other versions of Itazura na Kiss and even though I already know what's gonna happen, I feel that the K-version presents a fresher approach. It makes me want to continue on to the next episode without hitting the ff button. I think this is the only version where I lol'd a lot of times because the characters/scenes are just so funny. And despite PK's low ratings, my only hope is that JB & GF continue to recap the drama :)

I personally thought in the beginning before playful kiss premiered that it would be a successful drama like BOF, but I didn't know that there was too much GOOD competition. I honestly am not of fond of playful kiss anyway, it's too cliche and not any original like Baker King and Giant were. I even like Sungkyunkwan scandal a lot better personally. TBH I haven't watched a full episode of playful kiss yet because its not really the type of drama that makes you excited to wait for the next episode, even though Baker King ended, playful kiss still has tough comp coming its way.

Where is anyone bashing PK?
Is your fangirl brain so spazzed out that you consider the fact that someone said "I don't like the show" as a hate mail?
Are you saying that everyone MUST watch PK and post "Ah so wonderful" comments, or what, you will run JB's blog into the ground? What are you, the PK-Gestapo?

aiya.. just saying. no offense. don't get so worked up. actually it's true about the bashing thingy. idk what makes them think that the drama is not a good watch since they havent actually watch it 1st hand. not expecting them to watch or say the drama is wonderful but it would be nice that they dont go around telling the drama is not good that leave others under the same impression. think about it. again..just saying. no grudge here. btw, no PK fans said anything bad bout BK so far. they do deserve the high ratings. :)

Well, they have the same right to voice their opinion after they watched the drama like you have, no matter how many episodes they have watched. I mean, if you go to a restaurant and the food tasts (by your tastebuds) lousy, do you finish the serving and ask for another one? Would you recommend the restaurant to the rest of the world? No? Then what about the hard work everyone put into it, and the cute waitor who put such an effort in saving the meal? Still not saying that your friends should go to the restaurant? :)

And if you bothered to look into the posts instead of just trashing everyone elses's opinion, then you would've noticed that from those who have watched BK, a good number also say "It's not my show".

Honestly, people who solely based on comments here or on reviews here decide not to watch a show don't deserve it any better. Make your own opinion.
But also, I absolutely hate people who think just because they like something, everyone else has to like it, too, and if they say no, or if they even give you a reason so that you see that they don't say that to spite you "Sorry, but I have a different taste, I tried but I didn't like it because of reason A, B, C", the people are automatically "haters" who just "bash" and should keep their "mouths shut if they don't have anything good to say".

Gosh, yes, I get upset about such a kind of attitude, this forcing your opinion on others and if they don't do as you want, you stamp them as the bad guys so that you can point fingers and live in your happy bubble.

And FYI, I'm watching PK (which has potential but except for the lead actress really failed to keep my interst. I will give it two more eepisodes and then if it still is the same, I will drop watching it. Because, you know, there are just so many hours in a day, and I'm not going to waste my time with food that is stale in my mouth when I can have my favorite restaurant's food instead.)
I also watch Sungkyunkwan Scandal (which makes me happy and helps relax after a day at work) and Joseon X-Files (which is rather interesting to watch, though certainly not everyone's taste). I don't watch Giant (not my cup of drama, even though I think it's a splendid show, from the few episodes I have watched), I still have to watch BK (aforementioned time factor),and the Gumiho GF show (it sounds interesting but I don't want to invest in a drama which might have one of the leads die in the end, so I'm waiting for the ending first.).

i do get your point. i did not mentioned about forcing others into watching PK. i was just talking about how others not being considerate while gauging PK in a sense that they havent watch it. :) no hard feelings. just a POV. but the main prob could be the airing time and day. HUGE competition. cant do anything bout it. :(

People voicing their opinions about a drama is NOT bashing. How do you know that they haven't watched it "first hand"? Plenty of people have stated that they tried to watch it, but felt that it lacked a lot and couldn't get into it. But certain PK fangirls kept going around telling them to watch more of the dramas first before judging it. It shouldn't take SIX episodes to get people into a drama. Six episodes is already 1/3 of the drama. Moreover, by your logic, no criticisms should be spoken because it leaves bad impressions? So only good impressions can be created? What kind of world is that where you can only express your likes because you don't want to leave bad impressions?
And why must people be considerate to PK fans? If simply saying that PK has flaws hurt your feelings, then maybe you need to sort out your priorities.

if PK is under KBS instead of MBC it might help with the ratings too coz on Astro there's only KBS. how sad is that. :/

quote David Archuleta: " good things come to those who wait". I believe that PK will do better in the next episodes! just like how when fans thought that CN Blue is done they were wrong! now CN Blue is famous! things happens for a reason. i'm sure there's something good awaiting ahead. PK HWAITING! :) i don't agree with some saying that the drama sucks and boring. u don't watch part of it and started to say "oh i'm gonna stop watching..this sucks" coz u haven't seen the rest of the episodes. Deal with the fact that PK rocks! haters..tsk tsk. no offense.

" ‘Playful Kiss’ has high download rates despite low ratings"

idk bout the low ratings but the drama is doing really well on the internet worldwide. Most ppl watch it online and download it which dont contribute to the ratings as the ratings are counted only nationwide in korea and that doesnt help much either. PK is REALLY popular i must admit

Im enjoying PK (online), hehhehe (and Im 23)

When drama in my country now is just full of conflicts, ..
PK is typical of simply story that maybe it will make you remember your story in highschool..It deliver it with cute and funny way... sometimes I have the feeling that Ha ni has...kekekekke I remember that day...so when you need to relax your stress, watch PK..and also you will learn something from Ha ni character (the persistent one, never give up)..^^

Maybe PK is my taste because I like typical J dramas (the short one/dont have many ep) (ehm slice of life) and dont have to much intrigue..You feel like, it maybe happen in your life.. (life is not always about revenge or anger)...

Just want to say fighting for PK team,.. Every story deserve a respect, because its human story and made by human....(Why I watch a film or story? maybe for me I want to find my little story in there...and I want to see it in different way not always in my point of view...) And PK deliver it, and make me realize its okay to love someone like seung jo..hahahahhahahaha...My first love....

ups sorry i write too long...coz its my first time...

If only I can send my spirit or anything to make PK team dont loose the spirit... Just pray for them...

I am happy for BK to have such a rating since i watches this ever since this came out.

This drama get good rating not just because of the plot, i think that many of the koreans watches this because this story is base on the person who open up paris baguette. It is insteresting to see a drama that is base on real life stories too.(even tho not 100% of the plot is true)

when u have to go paris baguette in korea, and u will think of baker king.^^

as for PK, i watches all the 3 drama, i also watched the taiwan version & Japanese one.

One thing that is lacking in PK korean version is the touching scene. You have to watch the japanese version in order to know the different.please do not watch and compare the actor/actress looks and so on.If you want to base on acting, the Taiwan actors/actress actually acted better but yes..it is still not fair to compare since KHJ and JSM is still new in acting while the the 2 taiwan actor/actress acted more in dramas/movies.

i do hope in the later episode, PK can improve on their ratings.maybe the new character that came in now which is Yoon Hae Ra make the drama abit more tense. It is time to see the girls trying to snatch Seung Jo right?Hong Jang Mi is too weak!

i did watch the anime one though. i'm liking the korean one coz the storyline is just lovely. there isnt much touching scenes in the first few episodes frankly speaking..not until ep 7.. i like PK very much. :) i also thought that both KHJ and JSM portrayed the characters really well.
