Personally, with the anti-gay sentiments, the whole questionable location, and this, I'm not that excited about the games in Russia... My adoptive family is from Russia (mostly), but I have major head shaking on this end.

I like figure skating which is pretty much the only thing I watch out of the Winter Olympics.

I have the same sentiment. I haven't watched anything from this winter olympics, I can't be bothered.
But at least we can already look forward to the 2018 olympics in Pyeongchang ;-)

She really was. But it wasn't unexpected, with that transational conspiracy out to do skaters from other countries dirty. (supposedly the Russian who won had a higher technical score? idek)

If it's any consolation, she's the true winner in the eyes of most who watched, though it's slim consolation.

Yuna had less jumps than the winner, which would equate to less points for Yuna, also the winner had only one bobble. Yuna was great but the Russian dance was more energetic and she was more involved, even watching at home you could feel the sense of I have nothing to lose. No rotten tomatoes please liking someone does not mean being blind. Yuna simply went through the paces and did not have the same mind set as when she skated in Vancouver.

The way the ISU scoring system is set up, it isn't enough to just get through jumps. They grade you on execution and completion. Although Yuna did one jump less, her jumps were more difficult and done w/ textbook form, as many commentators have repeatedly said. So she could have easily outscored Adelina - that is, if the judging weren't so skewed.
(The world has heard by now that 1 judge was involved in a previous skating voting scandal; another Russian judge is married to the director of Russian figure skating federation; 4 out the 9 judges for the long program were from Russia and former Soviet bloc, which is almost half right there; the leader of the technical panel of 3 which makes calls on difficulty was led by the VP of the Russian skating fed.)
Adelina did that same program previously and scored below 200. All of a sudden, she jumps to 225 in a matter of months?

And the gold goes to the skater w/ the highest technical and component (artistry) marks, along with GOE. That is the way the scoring system is set up. You say Adelina skated w/ more energy than Yuna. Well, faster music and more gusto isn't what wins the gold. If it were, anyone of those girls even in the lower ranking 1st group of skaters could have won b/c many of them had those 2 criteria you talk about. - Yuna skated with precision, correct form, textbook precision w/ jumps, and artisry. Commentators have said Adelina was missing artistry altogether; And this is strange b/c artistry is a big component in the scoring.

Basically what I'm saying is that if the judging panel weren't made up of people w/conflicting interests, Yuna would have won because Adelina simply did not have all the components. In 2013 Worlds, both women skated well. And in skating their best, Yuna got 1st place and Adelina.... 9th.

You hit the nail on the head...it's such a damn shame because Yu-na was blatantly robbed.
If going by the "logic" of Adelina supporters that Adelina jumped one more triple than Yu-na, then Mao Asada should have had the highest free skate score and been on the medal stand. Mao jumped 8 clean triples, including the Axel...and had the most difficult technical program. Yet her free skate was curiously low...which made no freakin sense. Yu-na, Carolina and Mao should have much higher scores than Adelina and Yulia, both of whom had flaws (Yulia even fell in both programs but still finished ahead of Mao??) yet got high scores...the three Olympic veterans skated cleanly and beautifully. Yu-na had the far superior programs and skated flawlessly--and is the true gold medalist. This result should be asterisked like baseball's home run record.

It boggles me that the IOC has no problems with all this BS...just goes to show how it's still a long way from getting corruption out of figure skating.

I can't begin to imagine the pressure on her shoulders when she stepped on the ice for the short program and free skate. In Vancouver she was overcome with tears at the end of her free skate because she was just focused on doing her best and she was able to enjoy herself AND nail the routine. But this time you could see the relief on her face at the end of the free skate.

Initially I thought the gold medalist did better than Yuna (blasphemous, I know, but my 'illegal' stream was very dodgy during the Russian's skate so I missed most of her free skate), but after reading some analysis online I found out the Russian had made some errors while Yuna was pretty much flawless, so I've changed my mind and agree that Yuna was robbed.

Some credit should still be given to the gold medalist because she certainly looked like she was enjoying herself tremendously during the free skate. And I suppose we can't directly blame her for the seeming lack of accountability and blatant conflicts of interest in the ISU judging system.

Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir were commentators for NBC for the women's free skate. They relayed that all golden medalists have that "Olympic moment," and they agreed with the podium standings. That just goes to show how biased skating is, regardless of the new point system.

Did you notice when the Men's singles were giving out the medals, NBC couldn't even be respectful enough to show it. Because there were no American's on the podium, they had Tara and Johnny on camera and yaking all the way through it. Sometimes I am embarassed to be American. I watch the Olympics to see all the world athletes and I want the best ones to win not specifically the USA.

I missed the Men's singles... I looked at the podium standings, and I'm really happy with them. To be frank, I wasn't impressed with any of the US male skaters.

Overall, I am disappointed with how NBC aired the Sochi Olympics. I missed most of the events I was interested in because they weren't considered "prime time" television worthy. I understand that it's up to the network on what to show and how to show it... but I know they can do better.

I never watch NBC commentating for figure skating. They used to have Scott Hamilton and Sandra Bezic and I hated their commentary.

I find BBC and British Eurosport much, much better.

That gave me Shin A-Lam flashbacks which was like relieving a nightmare. Shin A-Lam's loss was so heartbreaking because the hurt and injustice was so palpable and obvious on her face. Not that YuNa's robbed gold win was any less heartbreaking but the evident relief at her announcing her retirement (you could see hiw glad she was to be done with this shit called competitive figure skating) somehow softened the blow. Also the fact that she took it so well and handled it with grace. Queen Yeon Ah!

I was not too thrilled to see the finalists in that order either, but my one of my BFFs (who skated for the Japan National Team in her teens and 20s, so she knows what she's talking about) said that Yuna's program lacked certain technical skills required by Olympic standards. Regardless, all the commentators discussing Yuna's free skate said that it was beautifully executed, but just didn't have the "oomph" (for lack of a better term) that Sotnikova's program had.

And seriously... all the problems in the world with Ukraine imploding and Syria exploding... a petition to change the results of a SKATING MATCH is warranted because you didn't like the results? Everybody funny. *hmpf*

Most former professional skaters said Yuna deserved the goal. Even if she had a lower technical score than Adelina, she would have won because her PCS score should have been way higher than Adelina's.

From what I heard and seen, most of those in the figure skating world didn't think Sotnikova should have won. Tai Babilonia, Katarina Witt, Todd Elderedge, Gwendal Peizerat, the list goes on. Even Michelle Kwan tweeted Yuna, saying "Unbelievable."

Sotnikova despite her mistake, with one more triple than Yuna in the long program, did win technically, but her component scores (which judges skating skills, interpretation, choreography, execution, transitions, etc.) were 74.41 and Yuna's was 74.50. Yuna's scores should have been much higher, at least 3-4 points I would argue and Sotnikova's 2 or 3 points lower.

Sotnikova even beat Carolina Kostner in component scores,
so she beat two people ladies who are known to be better overall skaters then her. Her long program was rewarded 149.95, almost beating the record, Yuna Kim's 2010 Olympic flawless free skate 150.06.

The real problem is we don't know which judges consistently marked Yuna down for her grade of execution marks (giving her ones) and one marked Sotnikova up with threes for the same mark (was this the same judge?)

I think also Yuna Kim should have won the short program with much higher points then she got.

Kim, Kostner, Sotnikova.

A petition has been organised because people see injustice in the sport. There are indeed many problems in the world which are more pressing, but it doesn't mean that other forms of injustice have to be ignored just because "there are bigger problems out there".

On last week's new Music Show they discussed Yuna Kim, the nation's gold medal pride, and the pressure on her. It was very heartwarming to see a panel of 5 guys who understood the pressure on her and were sending her off fighting! I believe she deserved a back to back gold win with her performance at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

I'm sorry but all these girls face an overwhelming amount of pressure on their shoulders. Not just Yuna. This is the Olympics.

That's pretty true. I really felt for Mao and it was such a pity that her short program scored poorly, because her free skate was magical and she really gave it all knowing it was her last performance on the Olympic stage. Otherwise she'd have had a shot at a medal.

Yes, Mao Asada did skate her free skate well. But again, the biased panel of judges gave her lower scores than Julia (Russian), even though Julia fell on a jump and Mao skated with no mistakes and did harder jumps.

Even the judges were shady! One was involved (the Ukrainian) in the 1998 Nagano ice dancing controversy. Another judge (Russian) was involved in foot-tapping judging controversy with another judge. I totally agree... Soon as I finished watching, I googled "Yuna Kim robbed"! As I was watching, you could tell the Canadian broadcasters on CBC were really surprised by the outcome.

CBC Commentary: "That's a shock...Did you see that coming" (of Sotnikova winning) "Well I think I saw a medal coming, I'm just not sure we thought it was going to be that one" "As caught up in the moment as I was... I'm still stuck on quality of skating that Yuna Kim has, and the moments where you see jarring images during Sotnikova that she's not ready yet ...The judges have their job and I really look forward to looking at it again so I can see it with fresh eyes but yes I am sitting here a little stunned"

Required fields are marked *

Kim Yuna was not the only one who was robbed. Mao was definitely robbed as well. Even though she bombed in the SP, her free skate was the best of the night technically (8 triples) and artistically I feel that Mao, along with Kostner are one of the few skaters who can match Yuna when they are at their best. Mao deserved to be ahead of Sotnikova in the Free skate, as did Yuna.

I hope they do open an enquiry. I love this sport and have been following it for years. Seeing such poor judging on the biggest stage is so, so sad for the sport, the skaters and the fans.

I saw the charge and called to see why/where it came from & then they explained. Not that I wouldn't have ordered a replacement anyway but I did not appreciate the high handedness of it all.

Been there, done that. It's awfully expensive. I spent ~100 Euros replacing cards (there was a cancellation and a reissue fee for my credit card! WTH). What annoyed me was that I lost my wallet in the restricted zone within an airport, i.e. in such a specific area and some place where it would have been easy to hand in. And there wasn't even anything useful inside, no money, mostly library cards & student cards... well, and the credit card, but had my sister cancel it within ~15 minutes of losing it (was about to step on a plane).

Which reminds me though, I need to call up Transport for London because I found a set of keys the other day with the only identity-traceable thing on it being a key from London's bike scheme...

Anyhow, I hope you get your wallet back. There are honest people – I dropped 400 GBP recently at my uni and another student handed it in. :-D

During the 2 years I studied there, 3 of my friends their phone's got (almost) stolen. Luckily with one of them I saw it happening and blocked it in time. What frustrated me the most, was that the school didn't do anything about it, they want to create an open school, accessible for everyone... but that also means everyone can just enter without showing any identification. It still angers me thinking about it.

Hi! Much love! Although awful things are happening in Ukraine, all we can do on our side is to fill the world with more positivity and try to influence people to follow our example. Then there will be less and less people willing to do evil. I am truthfully thinking:. These events right in the heart of Europe, so close, and what happens if other countries get involved? War? Hope not. Anyway. I made a donation for Red Cross and took a candle to ukraine Catholic church here in Old Town. What else can I do, other than I sent an angry letter and a voodoo doll to Ukraines´ Rada last week….
Anyway.
Today it is a musical Open Thread for me. Sometimes a certain song or a few pop into my head when I watch something, old and new songs, sometimes the lyrics match the drama so perfectly that it is amazing.
YFAS – Everytime we touch (I get this feeling, everytime we kiss, I swear I could fly. Can't you feel my heart beat fast, I want this to last. Need you by my side. – SO. TOUCHÉ. Cause everytime THEY kiss I hear this song.... ) and naturally „I will always love you” is also their song. It totally SHOULD BE.
INR3 – Frozen by Madonna. Subject to change. If I could melt your heart, we´d never be apart.
AoF – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dllo85ZSUk ...
Oh, and Icelands´Eurovision song is.... totally Rooftop Prince, cause tracksuits! Except why are they missing green? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=42k8HEn3DcE
Masters´ Sun - "The Ghosts That Haunt Me" by Crash Test Dummies, an oldie, but....
”'Cause you're so kind, I know you would not mind, You'd send away the ghosts that haunt me now; And the things I fear , Just wouldn't seem so near, And when I stroll out late at night There would be nothing rattling at my heels...”
Nazo no Tenkousei – This: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypJDXayM5FM#t=143 – cause I am not exactly sure as of yet what kind of tune it is but it sure seems engaging.
I Hear Your Voice – I Would Do Anything For Love (but I won´t do that) by Meat Loaf
Coffee Prince – a song called „Laughter of the wind” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbLQ-SC_2kM cause some angst and laughter...
Heirs – a mix of Cryin´by Aerosmith & It´s My Life by Dr. Alban
What are yours?

Happy OT

Oh man those Olympics… Not a good one for the Austrian Team =( But still proud of all our athletes who tried their best =)
I’m beyond crushed for Queen Yuna because… She deserved Gold and I don’t want to talk the Russian skater down because she skated well but … For god’s sake even the commentators were pissed -.- Kati Witt was raging on German TV xD That gap between the Russian and Yuna was way too big especially since the Russian freaking tripped on one of her jumps and Yuna was flawless! But I am still happy that she got a medal and I am even more happy for Carolina Kostner who finally got her Olympic medal <3 Yuna you’ll always be the Queen of Ice!!! <3
And yeah I should stop getting too excited about sports it’s not good for my heart xD

YFAS: EEEEEEEEE KSH contributed to the OST I’m emotionally drained -.-

INR 3: I don’t really like sunbae because he seems too much of an ass most of the time. Which is sad because I like Nam Goong Min very much… I just hope Wan gets the girl in the end because he deserves it!

Emergency Couple: I am totally shipping JH with Chief Gook though I finally start to warm up to CM!

Variety:

Running Man: OMG how hilarious was JS as SY?!^^ Cracked me up so much :D But as always the drama parody episodes are not the strong ones though I really enjoyed this one! But then again nearly everything that concerns YFAS can entertain me so…
Anywho I loved KYS and how she had a hard time nor cracking up at the cast’s interactions with her (esp. JS who was hilarious)^^

Superman Returns: How adorable! This episode had me squeeing at the cute explosion every 5 minutes^^ The meeting of the various families was a great idea.
I absolutely adore Junu and how he is a great oppa to Sarang (and poor Junsu who’s always a tad bit late with his actions^^). And when is HS going to realise that he can’t cook? I swear I cracked up so much when they revealed the seaweed soup mystery xD How can you mistake mushrooms with seaweed? Granted they kinda looked alike but he TASTED them! I loved how the staff was trying to hold their laughter during the interview only to crack up eventually^^

1N2D S3: Dear Lord they nearly killed me with this episode :P It started with the drawing on each others face mission. Junho’s stamp idea was brilliant though I can’t get over TH’s shocked face when he realised that JY took him out^^ But the idiom quiz was the one thing that brought me to tears xD I actually needed to stop in the middle of the whole sequence because I was laughing so hard^^

Re Austrian team: ski-jumping.... what a let-down. Well, I'm glad for the silver in the first women's event (even more so because the jumper is openly gay), but the silver in the men's team event makes up for nothing.

I'm happy for Noriaki Kasai though :-D

Skiing hasn't been very good either, although at least men's downhill got the gold. That's still the king's discipline in skiing in my book... (and kudos for Fenninger's gold too).

Otherwise, loved Hanyu Yuzuru winning gold in men's figure skating (I confess I'm enjoying all the gifs of him on Tumblr way too much and I looooove his Pooh bear tissue box). And Ayumu Hirano's silver in the half-pipe – he's 15!!! 15!!! And like two heads shorter than everyone else in the competition, it's quite hilarious.

Didn't watch women's iceskating and I've heard arguments defending either side. I don't know enough to make a judgment, it just sounds controversial, minimally that the point difference was too big.

Emergency couple: I'm half with you on that shipping... though CJH could still be worth it. It's finally dawning on him how many privileges in life he's had because of his family background. I'm guessing he'll end up with JH, but in real life I think someone like JH would actually move on. It just makes more sense.

Oh man Noriaki... I LOVE him! 2 medals at his age xD And if he continues like this I am sure we'll see him in 2018 again :D

Vancouver was worse as I remember...No medal at all for our men xD

Hanyu is my new love when it comes to men's figure skating! I mean I am still a huge Takahashi fan but there was a little slump after Lambiel retired. But Yuzuru is just so adorable but skates sooo good! It's always a pleasure to watch him <3

I don't remember the last Olympics at all... and confess I haven't been paying attention to the world cup (ski jumping or skiing), only watching some of the events in January (Vierschanzentournee).

Was super happy when Noriaki Kasai had a world cup win in January and thought it was so brilliant that everyone was totally happy for him (rather than the usual 'damn, we lost').

Saw that there were 2 more medals in women's slalom today though, so the women's team seems to have done okay overall, whereas the men only have the downhill gold.

Hanyu... he's good and you can just see that he loves what he does. All the joy reflects on his face (like when he scored more than 100 points in the SP). I think he generally has a super-expressive face (not just for joy), which makes watching him even better.

Everyone is jst so close and with all the points for wind and gate it's sometimes unpredictable...

Yeah everyone's just always super happy when Noriaki is on the podium which makes me super happy as well :D My mom and I were joking that in the team event he actually looked like a dad with his sons who just won bronze for Japan :D

Our ladies did really well but I couldn't watch the second run of the Slalom today T.T But I am so happy for Zettel (who won Bronze) because she struggled so hard in recent years with injuries and this week wasn't easy since she got a call a few days ago that her grandmother died. So this was pretty emotional for her today and I swear there were some tears in my eyes when I saw the highlights today T.T

He seems like a little energizer bunny who's always happy! I mean even after the free skate which was nowhere close to perfect (my heart stopped a few times^^) he still smiled and that just makes him so much more likeable!
And HAH that photoset is brilliant :D I just hope he stays healthy so that we will see much more of his brilliant skating =)

Hi zakin89! How are you doing? Having a nice weekend so far?

There seems to be a lot of strange things happening in the olympics. Haven't been able to follow it myself so missed the figure skating this year..

Superman returns: I love this show. Running a couple of epsiodes behind, but aw the kids are so cute.

Haven't been following 1n2d season 3, is it any good? (besides this epiosed that sounds like it was pretty funny :p )

Hi! Yeah it's been good so far thanks for asking :) How about you?

I can't really remember the last Olympics but it seems like there were a lot more serious injuries than in others...

I adore all of the kids and it's also nice to see their growing bond with their fathers (esp. Haru and Tablo)

I like it very much so far. I stopped with S2 after SW and Bird PD left so I just read the recaps on DB and even that was kind of boring... But S3 is a lot of fun right now and the cast is pretty cool =) I swear the episode in which they framed JH when they were playing rock-paper-scissors had me rolling on the floor :D Poor guy is so gullible^^

Yes Haru and Tablo really seems like they are getting closer, it's nice to see. I also love Sarang and her father, how she is so tiny compared to him, and then he is just such a foul for her.

Thanks zakin89 for having been faithfully writing about Superman in OT! Man I was just randomly browsing OT last Friday and ended up stumbling upon your comments on Superman Returns, which sounds like a very interesting title to me. And I have been watching it ever since. I haven’t caught up with the latest episodes yet, but I have been following this show like mad for the past few days. OMG Haru-ah! She has got to be my fav so far. I mean, she isn’t particularly cheerful and she doesn’t smile a lot, but she is just so unique/quirky (re: her love for fishes/animals/babies). And I don’t know why every time I watch her and her dad’s parts I always burst into laughter! They are so hilarious together and dad is just so clueless, especially in the earlier episodes. I just finished the Christmas episode and I’m like: Haru-ah, stop breaking my heart like you broke your dad’s.

I do like the reversal on the men this season being more inexperienced with love than the women.

You from another star, Let's Eat and INR3 all share that.

I think Attorney Kim is super inexperienced with women, awkward and a bit ditzy. A touch of stalker, but I think some of that is also him being too afraid to approach her and tell her straight.

I understand too what Attorney Kim is doing, but it's not the behaviour I would expect from 30 something year old.

I don't think anyone could blame Soo-kyung if she runs – I would definitely run (even without the years of him semi-bullying her at work, just the current smothering is enough).

I think we can feel sympathetic, because we know he's not a bad guy... but in real life, I wouldn't take my chances.

Beyond Let's Eat, Shitsuren Chocolatier, Deja Vu and Empress Ki, INR3, I'm not really watching that many dramas because I don't like that many.

So I was talking to Korean native speakers who grew up in Korea... because I'm trying to practice my speaking in this group for language exchange, and I learned more about the ㅅ sound in Korean.

1. Americans constantly think that it's sh--it isn't. And a Korean native speaker will ride you hard to get the pronunciation right. Most Koreans won't bother, but when you listen and hear, there is a marked difference.

2. That the Korean s sound as in ㅅ is softer than the American s sound, but you have to really pick it up.

3. ㅆ is not the same as ss in america either--I was wrong. It's not an sh, and it's not a shi(such as the Japanese し). or a ssi. it's a stressed version of the soft s sound (which is hard to pick up until you hear it repeated a few times.)

When I said before that people mistake the 5 's' sounds, I was right--there is a marked difference, and even the native speakers can tell that you're getting it wrong, but they are too polite to tell you so most of the time. After getting corrected... and feeling sheepish... umm... yeah, I'm 100% sure.

Summary:
sh=/=s=/=ss=/=ㅅ=/=ㅆ

Now, I know what's going to come next. "But it sounds the same" objection. Get a speaker fresh out of Korea to tell you honestly and they will say "No, it doesn't." I know because I tried "Sh" and was corrected (Way off the path). I tried /s/ and was corrected. I finally nailed the ㅅ and was complimented. And I know I brought it up before and people refuted it, even javabeans, but I can bring a native sample to prove the point. (5 different sounds--I swear.)

I have to admit, I felt vindicated, even through being corrected, 'cause I was told before they were the same though I heard the difference.

(Another reason that the IPA is inexact<--linguistics thing I've been riding for a while. I often can hear sounds that aren't in the index of IPA.)

Other topics we discussed are things like American Korean accent (i.e. people who grew up in the US and speak Korean) versus those who speak Korean out of Korea. "Check please" for example and when to say "Thank you" vary in the American Korean versus standard dialects.

I also learned that I got lazy in the years I didn't really speak Korean and started to Americanize it. *cough*

Also slang for "sugar daddy" in Korean is "Shutterman" i.e the guy that is willing to pull and put down the Venetian blinds. Haha. I found that amusing. (We were talking about dating.)

Nothing beats talking to a native speaker who will be honest and kick your butt.

BTW, if you have any questions on pronunciation or grammar, I'm going tomorrow and Sunday. I can make recordings for any questions, but it has to be before tomorrow....

I'm Korean and adopted, but I lost a lot of my Korean vocabulary. XD I think my younger self could talk circles around my current Korean. My pronunciation and hearing tends to be good--I nailed French very well. (Just can't do tones--I need a strict Mandarin teacher).

Anyway, if you have specific questions you want to actually *hear* the answers to, I can record it, and put it up on my blog. I have access to fresh off the plane Koreans who speak fluently. Also, sometimes I'll have access to regional dialects so you can hear a native example rather than a TV example. (sometimes people exaggerate for TV).

BTW, I also learned from a Chinese speaker that Cantonese and Hakka have a lot of influence on Korean. (Chinese speaker learning Korean.)

So ask away and I'll ask for you and you can hear it.

Also the l/r sounds in Korean are tricky. They *sound* like a Japanese lr sound. But the tongue placement is a tiny bit forward of the Japanese lr sound. (I'd do the linguistic IPA one, but it's being refuted on the wikipedia page....)

ㄹ at the beginning sounds different from the ㄹ at the end, and sound different from the Spanish r, the Japanese rl, the American rl, the Irish r and the Scottish r. (Irish flip their rs, Scottish rolls them, and Spanish kinda vibrates? I'm not sure that's the correct word while rolling them) I also tend to hear regional differences in the Spanish r sound? Some of the dialect versions of r in Spanish sounds different to me.

The Korean r sound sounds flatter than the Japanese lr sound.

And the Korean L sound sounds more congested than the American L sound. (tongue is further back in the mouth).

The r sounds I can map on a mouth diagram.

I'm sure I pronounce it incorrectly, but I speak intermediate Spanish, and that helps with the r/l sound.

The thing that tripped me up with the L sound is the hangul... like Lee/Li is 이... what?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, it's 이 not 리 which would be "ri" in English (Modify the sounds in your head). It's mostly to make it easier on English speakers. It's fiction that's it's an "Li" or "Yi" sound. But it makes it Easier on foreign speakers. (Koreans tend to do that as a group (broad generalization, so take with a heap of salt)... as I learned. I would say, ride me harder and they still would go easy on me as a "foreigner when I was in Korea)

You get l sounds at the end only and at the beginning only in the middle.

한글==hangeul
할레루야=haleuya (That should translate easily)

See you need two: ㄹ to make an L sound start at the beginning.

L doesn't come at the beginning.

Also, I think this proves why one should learn hangeul--not only are the sounds different, but you need to see the way the hangeul is arranged in order to nail the correct pronunciation.

0

I have trouble saying r's in English. It's a regional dialect problem (park my car in harvard yard). ㄹ is giving me the same trouble. I hear that the noises coming out of my mouth are wrong, but struggle to figure out how to correct that. Never could roll r's in Spanish class either.

Yeah, Bostonian accent tends to be low in the mouth and more nasal than the rest of America. (Southern tends to round out sounds and is less in the nose.)

Also the r sounds at the beginning in Bostonian accent tend to be dead flat. Hitting middle to lower mouth, where as the rest of America tends to got for upper and move the tongue close to the roof of the mouth (middle of the palate) If you take the standard r sound of American English (SAE--Standard American English--the thing you hear on television announcements, phone systems, etc) and move that forward to where your gums just start, that's a Korean r sound. move it a few millimeters back to behind the gums, that's the Japanese rl sound. Move it forward just a tad that's the Korean l sound. The l sound in SAE tends to be close to dental, which is why the Korean L sound sounds thicker. See..... a little tongue shift makes sounds difference.

(I've been retraining the siot sound all week...)

Vampire Prosecutor's song Danger sounds like Dangerl to me which I assume is that r/l thing.

I don't know whether the sound you're referring to is the same one in the honorific - 'sshi', but I've noticed that that tends to be pronounced slightly more sibilant than the 'sh' in, say, the word 'shingle' and is very different from the word 'shine'. Is that the one you're talking about?

(of course I am not American either and may have my own native accent skewing my pronunciations, but any clarification would be welcome!)

How are you finding Shitsuren Chocolatier?

The most recent episode had some signals of hope, but I'm still wary. I have a feeling Saeko is going to accept the confession, since her life with her husband is totally miserable. She should get out of that relationship since the guy is awful BUT she shouldn't be with Souta, but rather this woman needs to be SINGLE for quite a while to realise what it needs to have a good relationship. With Souta, it would just be a princess & puppy that licks her shoes kind of relationship yet again.

Have you tried Nazo no Tenkousei? I'm enjoying that one a lot. Totally off-the-wall, but yeah for totally off-the-wall Japanese dramas!

Shitsuren Choclatier, I thought the last episode gave the characters a lot more depth. We got to see why Souta likes Saeko (which sounds a lot like Saiko to me... i.e. psycho) and that none of the characters liking another character is quite so simple and linear. I was surprised they took a few twists. I actually felt a pang of sympathy for Saeko--it's clear she has men chase after her because she's lonely--but I don't think she should be with Souta.

I also kinda like Kaoruko less now than before. It's clear that she has personality issues of her own. That she's standoffish for a reason. I'd love to know the reason, but I don't like her character as it is now.

Story-wise, I find it interesting and engaging, character-wise--I now don't like any of the characters, but for some reason I don't mind so much. It's kinda like a noir version of a rom com.

Direction and acting wise--I think it's superb.

Satomi-san really delivers in more subtle ways that she used to at the beginning of her career. From the ruthless bits in Souta's imagination to her different reactions in the same sort of scene.

I also enjoy watching Mastumoto Jun-san's M performance--it's totally unexpected for me, since I'm used to him playing S's. He's managed to layer him performance well too.

Last episode also proved Mizukawa Asami's acting chops. OMG, the scene with her in the kitchen was just superbly acted. (This is a spoiler free statement since you don't know what I'm talking about until you see it). The subtle layers she put into the performance were really good.

Also Erena's character took a mayor twist too. She's not so simple either.

Nazo no Tenkousei, I haven't seen... not quite sure I'd like it. I'll give it a shot when I have time.

The last episode was better... but I'm still not sure where we are headed.

They are definitely pulling a sympathy card for Saeko, which I'm okay with, as long as it isn't being done to make her end-match with Souta. Being a Japanese drama, I don't feel the OTP is set, but I'm not sure what they are going for here and if they go for Saeko/Souta as OTP I will be majorly disappointed.

I'm not too engaged story-wise, too many unrequited loves and I have major issues with the fact that several characters in the drama are okay with chasing after married people (with or without kids). Erena had one second of "I'll give up on him" and then the next day she's encouraging Souta and rethinking her own position. Then of course there's Souta chasing after Saeko, Saeko consciously flirting and crossing lines despite being married, Matsuri having a fling with her best friend's bf and Olivier finding her admirable despite of that. Even Matsuri breaking up with the guy is meaningless, esp. because her new relationship seems to born out of making herself feel better after hearing her friends' conversation. There's no one in this drama that stands up and says "That's selfish and wrong" and it annoys me.

I do agree we have been getting more depths to the characters, which helps, but I still struggle with not really liking ANY of them. (Agree with you on Kaoruko.)

Required fields are marked *

Even Matsuri is '“That’s selfish and wrong” , love does not have a formula... even if a relationship starts with a wrong reason, love can develop... I think that is the interesting point of love. Olivier understands her situation and he does not mind it because he thinks that she will eventually fall in love with him. Let's see.

This drama display many layers of love and love obsession.

0

I suppose, but personally I would not get into a relationship with someone that cheated and, what's more, cheated with the boyfriend of her friend.

Olivier barely knows this girl. Of course it could develop into love, but that's a pretty terrible starting point he's picking. (Indeed, why does he like her? I don't think that's been made clear.)

0

I've noticed that if I see a new word and it is romanized, the first pronunciation that comes to mind is how this American might say an English word. However, if I see the Hangul, I am more likely to have a Korean pronunciation come to mind. Yet another reason why learning Hangul early is best.

I discovered the back of the mouth can be used to make sounds, when I had always talked from the front of my teeth, when I started learning Korean. Amazes me how loud and discordant I sound in English vs the softer, rounder tones of saying Korean.

I agree....

English sounds flatter--especially most American English to me. Korean tends to curve a lot and use more of the mouth, front, back, middle, up, vertical, middle and down.

English as I've heard it is mostly front of the mouth. (Korean American Korean also sounds flatter to me... ^^;;)

Also the inflection in English tends to be flat, but I find the inflections in Korean kinda cathartic since they go by emotional curve more than English.

Japanese is even flatter and softer than either of them, also higher in pitch--you can hear Japanese modulate their pitch when talking in english, their voice drops a few octaves. Middle of the mouth to the front... not so much harsh back sounds.

Just my opinion...

Hi!
AoF – Winnie Puhh Meiecundimees Yx Korsakov Läks Eile Lätti...
Oh, and Icelands´Eurovision song is.... totally Rooftop Prince, cause tracksuits! Except why are they missing green?
Masters´ Sun - "The Ghosts That Haunt Me" by Crash Test Dummies, an oldie, but....
”'Cause you're so kind, I know you would not mind, You'd send away the ghosts that haunt me now; And the things I fear , Just wouldn't seem so near, And when I stroll out late at night There would be nothing rattling at my heels...”
Nazo no Tenkousei – I am not exactly sure as of yet what kind of tune it is but it sure seems engaging.
I Hear Your Voice – I Would Do Anything For Love (but I won´t do that) by Meat Loaf
Coffee Prince – a song called „Laughter of the wind” (Virmalised, Naer on youtube) cause some angst and laughter...
Heirs – a mix of Cryin´by Aerosmith & It´s My Life by Dr. Alban
What are yours?

Watching:
My girl – I really don´t remember much anything but the villa and her clothes??? I had no recollection whatsoever of Lee Jun Ki´s character. Too many tears for him. Emo hair, emo behavior. But I am ready to forgive him cause he drove a Jaguar at one point. And many of his moments are so funny and cute. Like falling asleep at the hotel meeting and his mom about to throw a shoe at him.
I am very bothered by Marimekko bed linen. It kind of has the ability to end all magic. Ah and Lee Dong Wook is an ´81er like me (so is Jun Ji Hyun btw). That year of mine is a good year... because of that and until I wait for Viki to sub Man from the star I also started on Mandate of heaven which I haven´t had time for.....why does he remind me of Jack Sparrow there with the eyes and the expressions....
Nezumi – starting to feel like Batman and Catwoman? Haa, it is „Sunako-chan”!!! Let her be a permanent character, please! „It seems I am not that famous!” haha. Funny. For some reason I love this. It doesn´t seem as heavy anymore as it did.
I Need Romance – I kind of just started watching the latest episodes. I know what has happened so far from recaps. And even if I am a totally non-romantic person myself, this really gets to me. Wans´ attitude and selflessness... lovely Sweet Potato. Since I also re-watched My Girl, plus this, I have a strong craving for sweet potatoes. Need to get some. But what to do? Sung Joon, must you look so much like my cousin? It is so weird. I had the same issue with Tim Burtons´ Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, where Willy Wonka totally looked like my mom, from hair to obsessed look in the eyes, which is the craziest thing you can say about Johnny Depp, right? Cross „same issue” and replace with „1000 times worse”....

YFAS – have mercy, all I say. Funny, cute, heartbreaking, tense, I feel like I am ina blender. Or bouncing on some evil trampoline. My favorite pass time now is imagining horrible scenarios for Jae Kyung. the best end for this monster is a la Tim Burtons´Mars Attacks, get a chihuahua head attached to him while wearing a bra. Or being shrinked into a pebble and swallowed by a fish.
Downside: some Viki commenter is really disgustingly horny. She is a bit too much. I could NOT not look cause it just smacks you on the head. I am so nervous I haven´t yet read or watched till the end...
SEVEN?????? Hahaha seven babies. Omg me die. I can´t it is nighttime! Shit! Neighbors! Blast! Oh I can´t WHEN the show DOES make you laugh [and not wail in horror, crumble in despair or howl like a mad person) you pick up your guts from the floor for a week, and then it does it again. Not fair, I have a very expensive woolen carpet you know.
Hwi Kyung-ah! No words! Just a hug! Hey, girls, move away and let me hug the poor guy! Can´t even reach him, all buried under layers and layers of compassionate (and some horny) fangirls.... if he is smart he already escaped.... I wish he´d hook up with either Bok-Ja or some alien girl.
I am also wondering: why is it that in 400 years the rules don´t change? Is there no evolution in the alien world? Logically the world changes and the alienorganism adapts, the original rules from when they arrived should no longer be valid.

Random ramblings:
Wang Li concert Tuesday night! He plays chinese jew´s harp and a few other instruments. I was so happy to see him. He is so sweet. The concert.... something was off. I bet the concert hall was way too big for this very intimate performance. He said: when the last time I played here, I started to miss you, as soon as I got home, now I am going to love you, but it is very difficult to love even one person, all these people will be very difficult. He also said: as soon as you walk out of this concert hall, you will throw my heart and love into the dumpster. NOOOOO! Wang Li, don´t ever say that! I would never! You touched everyones´ heart. We will always miss you and think of you. You have to come back. From summer to yesterday I missed this guy like crazy. My musical crushes are pretty strong. I like many many musicians and bands, but those that I am devoted to, I worship forever. Some more than others. Wang Li is very special.
Ahh... I already miss him. My colleaugue said it right: he is the kind of performer whose presence makes us strive to be better people and neutralizes all the evil around us. The concentration, the sincere gratitude and kindness towards the audience, the open heart... everyone feels warm.

By the way, spring is here, even though there should be 6 ft of snow. What the hell I was planning to go travelling in March now I have to dig in the garden and plant seeds! The birds are back and strawberries are blooming! WHAT THE HELL? Was that one day of cold and snow the whole winter???? I wonder if it snows on Do Min Joons´planet, then I am moving there. Or what kind of climate do they have?
Tidbit: my name would apparently be 바람 in korean. Hmm.

Hi all:

A week of good and bad. Good: The Constant Tower got nominated for one of the best christian speculative fiction of 2013. Am hoping it ends up on the short list. Will see though: sex scenes bug some folks. Good: Got the audio to proof for another novel. Good: Constant Tower now has a narrator ..so another novel made into an audiobook. Bad: a HUGE disappointment and crappy health.

I find myself have a little burn-out with some dramas. One: Boredom and annoyance at the way certain issues in storylines are teased out or are repetitive. Two: Disappointment at the way some dramas end --either because of some wacked ending or wrong pairing.

The first problem is definitely the writer/director/k-drama norm's fault. I was really loving Angel's Revenge and then found myself getting more and more angry at how repetitive the near-misses and "revelations" were. I know stories are about manipulation but k-drama manipulation just gets boring sometimes. So although Angel's Revenge had begun...and Beyond the Clouds was just beginning, and Wang Family was ending... the boredom/annoyance was getting to me. In fact, I found the finale for Wang Family -- skipped ahead without watching 46, 47, 48, 49, watched it raw and got all teared up. reat ending..but I am not gonna wade through 4 episodes of unneeded manipulation to get to it.

The second problem is both my fault and k-dramas. I could see where Prime Minister and I was going, so I got off that train so i wouldn't have to see the wreck. That was the drama's fault. But those issues which are entirely my own...such as second lead syndrome issues..I will have to learn to live with. I actually find myself avoiding Let's Eat...because I think the writer made a mistake there. They have shown us so much of Lawyer Kim's heart that even if he is not part of the fated OTP pair, I will feel something is lacking. It's as if there's a missing scene somewhere.

You From another star: A part of me wishes episode 19 would've been the finale. There was someting sweet, finale -- yet open-ended about it with loose threads hanging. Am hoping the other episodes will be worth the extension.

Inspiring Generation -- feels like a different story held together to the first 10 episodes by a very tiny plot thread: Dad's dead body. I wis I cared more about the gang turf war. I wish hero had a purpose..such as trying to find his lost sister, even if he is floundering in a world he doesn't understand. I wish Gaya would stick to wanting to find out about her mother's and father's murder. But nooo

Loving the variety programs.

The Japanese dramas are really doing it for me this season:

Hours of my life -- I am totally committed to the tears, and loving the younger brother sub-plot.

Lost Days -- wow! So good. And I'm liking Wataru. I don't think he's evil. The Japanese are so good at depicting banal evil and petty cruelty (especially in female characters.)

Waiting for subs on Paper Moon.

Liking -- Divorce lawyer. It has that j-drama quality of teaching the viewers whilel entertaining them.

That's it. Have a great weekend, all.

It's that old saying: "All's well that ends well." And sometimes the ending just sucks away the glory that a drama has been building up. It really irks when the sucking away starts around a quarter way before the ending. Because then you're already so committed that it's hard to break away.

Once i realized you could simply decide to leave midway in a drama that has proved unfaithful to your expectations..it was as if i had a new idea of how free I really am. Yes, I can leave; I don't have to commit to this drama all the way to the end. Drama, you and I are not married for life.

Hi Carole! Best of luck with the nomination, it's a good book!

I get what you mean with drama's. I get it in periods, which is why I often fall back on rewwatching previous dramas because at least there I know the story and which bits to skip. And it also doesn't mean I have to get invested into a new drama. Though for me it comes and goes, I still get feed up sometimes of recurring plot lines all over. Sometimes you just wish for something new (or old).

Hours of my life: still need to pick this one up..

Last Days: I am really liking this. Only seen the first 2 or 3 episodes so have to catch up a little. It has a bit of the "White Christmas" feel and vibe, hope it will continue along the lines it has started with.

I really like the short stories collection though. Just starting ""The substance of things hoped for" (I'm getting close to the end *sad*)

I've got to say though that right now one of the ones I liked the best was "housewarming". Really liked the "stream of consciousness" style and how it's her thoughts you follow more than a description of the surroundings. So similar to they way we all go through life with thoughts and impressions and things we don't say out loud.

Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all doing well.

Watching this week:

A Warm Word - Continues to be so very good, even if at times you want to have words with some of the characters in the hope that they'd get their act together. ...... I'm a little past the half-way point and I don't think I'm off the mark when I say that Min-soo and Eun-young are in for a world of hurt for the remaining episodes.

YFAS - Half-way through this one and loving every minute of it! ...... I know many of you have seen it, but Song-yi trapped in the sleeping bag and then doing the bow was a scene to be remembered ...... for the awkward moment it was meant to be, the hilarity, the way it was filmed, the actress's commitment to the scene ...... so good.

Prime M & I - Half-way through and still so fun.

Biscuit Teacher Star Candy / Hello My Teacher - So much fun and so much heart.

Appa Oediga - Still Season 1 stuff, and still the last couple of episodes.

Off-topic, but um, the Olympics figure skating? ..... What was that about?? *shaking head*

Ok, that's about it for now. Take care everyone and have a great Friday!

I'm so behind on all the current dramas, it's ridiculous - I only caught up on Miss Korea enough to the point where I want to drop Yoon off a very steep, high cliff and then send hyenas to finish off the remains, slowly. And thank god Ji-young is so not into him, and makes that so clear! I have to catch up on YFAS, but a week of no internet really did a number on everything, ha.

I also rewatched The Moon That Embraces The Sun a few days ago, and it was gorgeous and perfect and epic......and then I made the mistake of continuing into the part with the adults. Specifically, adult Yeon-woo. I'd forgotten just how bad Han Ga-in was, especially in contrast to Kim Yoo-jung. Never again.

Also watched a few eps of (jdrama) Rich Man, Poor Woman because I love Oguri Shun and have heard so many good things about Ishihara Satomi, and she is good. It also tickled me a little to see that she has a slight resemblance to Ha Yeon-soo from some angles, especially around the mouth.

I think the childhood portion should just be its own drama, all of them were just SO GOOD in their roles. I don't remember how I got through the adults last time, other than by imagining Yeo Jin-gu and Kim Yoo-jung as slightly older Hwon and Yeon-woo.

I agree, also it seems like the book is better than the drama (I should say books, since she made it into a long epic--fricking 2 books--the original was shorter) 480 in one and 464 pages... 944 pages!

I'm looking forward to reading the completely translated book, though I get most of the language in spots.

For example, the original book starts with her in a foggy scene, rather than from childhood, where she runs into the King in the log cabin. Personally, I find that more poetic in a way since the fog and such feels like memories and you aren't anchored or sure where you are. The scene then plays out as the King trying to remember who she is and how he remembers her. And the fog shifts in the scene (from what I get) as he tries to remember... then the next chapter goes from her memories. It feels a lot more gentle than the drama did.

I also read that the author chose more poetic names for the characters as well, as kind of placeholder names in between their actual names.

Plus you don't have a bad actress in the book weighing you down. Emote, damn you, emote. A board did not just smack your face and stun you, have some emotion.

I believe the book also did not have Hwon and Yeon-woo meeting as children, but only exchanging letters? I loved the childhood portion but if there's a book in translation, I'd much rather read it and imagine the kid actors, older of course, as the protagonists.

I even found some fanfiction for the show once, but my disappointment with HGI was so strong that I never read to see whether it was good (got a small list of fanfic for other shows in my comment below, but that seems to be stuck in moderation thanks to links)

Having read the recap, I think this particular turn of events (heroine's bff going after her guy) seems to be a common thread in this writer's dramas, though at least in Can We Get Married it wasn't as infuriating and didn't serve to reduce the friend to a friend-betraying boy-crazy she-beast ruled by her hormones.

In other news: I may not have caught up on airing dramas, but I did find some pretty good kdrama fanfic last week. I know K-ent fandoms tend to be all about real-person shipping of idols, but these are all drama stories, here's the best of the lot imo (hope this doesn't get caught in the spam filter for links:

1. Frozen Courtships and Fiery Affairs (Heirs, Rachel/Young-do, NSFW): http://archiveofourown.org/works/1197276
It's the third in an excellent series, you can get to them by clicking the author's name on the page. I've already recced the previous two fics in past OTs, but this author does really well at capturing Rachel in all her spiky hostility and vulnerability (and also Young-do's tendency to push the envelope). Basically, Rachel breaks her engagement and ends up in Young-do's hotel room. This is the continuing aftermath.

2. Blue Hour (Flower Boy Next Door, Dok-mi/Que-geum).
http://archiveofourown.org/works/906236/chapters/1753590
This one is just pure adorable and sweet. Again, author has a good handle on the characters, especially Enrique.

3. Two for the Price of One (Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Yong-ha/Original Female Character) http://archiveofourown.org/works/666536/chapters/1217318
Usually, OFCs put me off a fic instantly, but I really like this one, even if the premise (flrting lessons? In Joseon Korea?) is a bit far-fetched. I guess if you make your heroine a painter of NSFW paintings, I'm bound to like her.

4. A Little Dust Under Our Feet (Shut Up Flower Boy Band, no real ships, from Su-ah's perspective) http://archiveofourown.org/works/1096085
Basically, this is Su-ah trying to get comfortable with Ji-hyuk's friend circle. Really sweet, and well written too.

5. Of Helmets, Hair and Hope (Vampire Idol, Jonghyun/Minah) - http://written-notes.livejournal.com/32697.html

Basically this is a retelling of an episode, but I think this author gets Jong-hyun's robotness and the odd sneaking of feeling behind that, really well.

Moon that embraces the sun.. Ah such a pretty looking drama in many ways. Such a shame that the plot got a little stuck and that we could not follow the children forever.. The adult part is in many ways the weakness of that drama indeed. Still loved it though.

I know, it was weirdly watchable even if the OTP were underwhelming as adults - and the adult cast did have some very good performances among them (Kim Min-seo especially).

But it was really jarring to go from Kim Yoo-jung playing a recently-memorywiped Yeon-woo, with the sense of something just being missing conveyed so perfectly on her young face, to Han Ga-in (to whom portrayal of an amnesiac crown princess meant only two things: widen your blank eyes a lot and use borderline ajumma body language - this may be a sageuk, but the character is supposed to be young!)

Required fields are marked *

Yeah the two of them didn't feel much like the same person at times. Which is a shame since Kim Yoo-Jung and the rest of the child cast layed such a good foundation for what was to come.

I also felt like the plot point of the king never having laied with the queen (or even a concubine or someone since he didn't like the dowager queens manipulation) just because of the main female lead was weak and a bit unrealistic. I mean holding onto the lost love is one thing, but for all he knew she was in fact dead. Not a good action of a king to throw his kingdom into chaos because he refuses to have an hair.

I am loving the latest episodes of Miss Korea. It just feels so gratifying to finally see the hard work of Ji Young and the Vivi cosmetics team pay off. Not gonna lie, when Ji Young finally confronted her jerk manager, I was screaming and cheering her on. I also did the same when people were rushing to buy Vivi's lipgloss. Now that everything seems to be going well, I'm a little scared about what obstacles still remain for them but hopefully everything just goes happily and smoothly until the ending ^_^ (although I am devastated that they only aired one ep this week and last).

If all the grit and dark of earlier episodes bothers you, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Seeing Lee Seon-Kyun and Lee Yeon Hee love each other every week is such a treat. LSK seriously gets better and better with each role he plays and his chemistry with LYH here is as good as any pairing I've seen.

And Lee Sung Min and Song Seong Min, those two are some of the most interesting second leads ever.

Anyone see Ghost Seeing Detective Cheo Yong? I only found 1 episode with subtitles, liked it. want more.

Also found one episode of Lady, which is maybe a new Korean series, haven't heard of it anywhere. Seems to have potential.

Still watching Let's Eat, You From Another Star, Thai Full House, Can We Love, I Need Romance 3. Looking forward to Three Weeks.

Biggest news this week is I am seeking a Korean pen pal for language exchange at Interpals website. I'm nervous. The internet is a place where weirdos, scammers, and freaks lurk. Then again, the world has lots of nice folk too. I'm afraid I am one of those freaks, seeking some nice Korean ajumma who would be willing to chat about KDramas.

I guess I just feel like to keep improving my language skills, I have to get to the point where I start writing korean words and have reason to put to use what I am learning. I am terribly inefficient in how I study, and quite frankly listening to Pimsleur tapes and doing flash cards is BORING.

Why would some one from Korea really take the time to chat with me in English? I feel all blushing school girl wondering if someone will ask me to dance. So far, I've exchanged a few messages with a rice farmer chatting about how to install a Korean keyboard and a black belt in Tae Kwon Do who is reading "Of human bondage" by W. Somerset Maugham.

So far, I haven't found me any Korean ajummas, just ajusshis. I can't imagine the men will want to talk KDramas. Wish me luck.

I like the Arang/Magistrate vibe and perhaps shows about guys who see ghosts tend to not fall into cheesiness ...i hope. At least, we arent subjected to extreme corniness or hero being afraid of the ghosts.....so far.

I've made up a list of dramas I want to see, but I can't decide if I want to watch one drama at a time or if I want to watch all of them at the same time, one episode a day.

I've only started getting into Korean dramas recently. It seems that you need to be able to cry believably/beautifully in order to make it as an actor.

There are times when I feel that the crying in Korean dramas is overdone. I think major actors end up being the actors you don't get exasperated at or tired of when watching them cry (like Kim Soo-hyun!).

Oh, I watched The Thieves recently... Wow, the kiss between JJH and KSH was super steamy.

Hope everyone has a great weekend :)

My personal approach is to watch one drama at a time, BUT to throw in an episode from an American/British show once in a while, because sometimes it can be a bit too much to watch so many episodes of the same show one after another.

Agree about the chemistry between JJH and KSH in The Thieves! I'm having school now so I haven't had time to watch YFAS but their chemistry must be sizzling in that show too.

I was in the mood for tears and feelings because ultimately the ending of Prime Minister and I left me feeling cold about the whole thing, so I started to re-watch the Japanese drama 1 Litre of Tears. Aya has always, well since I first learned of her existence, been a hero of mine because she stayed mostly strong and positive throughout and I don't know if I could do the same. I've always wanted to read her diary, does anyone know if there's an English translation somewhere?

Miss Korea- For my money by far the best drama so far this year, with Man From Another Star the closest in a distant second place. If Yoon's not murdered in the most brutal inhumane way possible by the end I'll be upset.

Man From Another Star- Was anyone else heartbroken by Suzy's guest appearance in episode 17? I mean in my head Hye Mi and Sam Dong stayed together despite Sam Dong being the US and eventually either Sam Dong came back to Korea of Hye Mi went to the US and they had 7 daughters each exactly like Hye Mi. When she referred to Sam Dong as her ex I was crushed.

Hours of My Life- I don't know if I can take this and 1 Litre of Tears at the same time, especially since ALS and spinocerebellar degeneration are so similar. I might have to stop one. On the plus side the Japanese usually don't use people with terminal illnesses as melo instead choosing to take a life affirming, heartwarming, bittersweet approach.

Who would have thought when Miss Korea first aired that a drama premised on a beauty pageant would not feature a second female lead in a typical evil way as a challenge to the main female lead? Ji Young's rise to the top is all about trusting her instinct, foregoing a top salon, foregoing surgery, foregoing feelings buried inside from a past love. I guess these fantastic female characters need the bastards around them as a contrast to their awesomeness.

Hi Beanies.

A couple of days ago I returned from the Berlinale and as promised to alua and others, I'm going to talk about the Korean stuff I saw. (All in all I watched 10 shows, all Asian or East-Asian, one has to choose what to watch out of roughly 400 options.)

I saw a documentary called 'Non-fiction diary' about the troubled 90s. The director examined the connection of the Chijon family murders and the corruption in the construction business, which led to the destruction of the Sampoong building and Seongsu bridge. A difficult, but highly interesting feature with a great Q&A.

And I watched 'Night Flight - Ba Gan Bi Haeng' by Lee-Song Hee-Il, who is my favourite Korean director. Night Flight was his third show at a Berlinale, the first being No Regret with Kim Nam Gil and last year's Baek Ya - White Night. This time he told us the story about a gay pupil at high school struggling with his love for a straight friend. The school environment gave us the compressed version of Korean society with all its competition, contempt for minority and mobbing. Highly recommended.

My current dramas are Miss Korea (I am soooo in love with the gangster ahjussi / Doctor pairing), Can We Love, which is just perfect, A Warm Word, INR3, which I can't stop watching although I find almost nothing redeeming in it, Empress Ki (Team Emperor! Fighting!) and YFAS, which I like, but which took a turn to makjang in the last ep.

Have a great weekend!

Non-fiction Diary was one of those that won an award, wasn't it?

The British Film Institute released its programme for the London Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and I'm rather disappointed that Night Flight isn't on it – especially because they screened Lee's Baekya & the two shorts last year.

Still a chance it will pop up at the London Korean Film Festival, but that's so far away. And a bit of a wildcard as the LKFF tends to screen (mostly) crowd pleasers and mainstream stuff.

Yes, Non-fiction diary got the NETPAC award for the promotion of Asian film.

I also happened to see this years winner Black Coal, Thin Ice and the Japanese movie with the winning actress' performance in it, The Little House. And as I always try to watch a children's movie I happened to catch this years winner of Generation Plus, Killa from India. I had the right instinct this year. :)

Keeping my fingers crossed, that you'll have the opportunity to see Night Flight, because it was together with the Indian movie Highway my favourite movie this year.

I have heard mixed things about Little House – the critics seem to be divided (and some seem to be dissing the director just a bit too much).

I will look out for all the others you mention, film recommendations are always welcome!

To be honest I was a little underwhelmed by The Little House and was quite surprised she got an award. Guess it was the year of the Asians this time. ;)

But I highly recommend Highway and Night Flight (just like all other movies by Leesong Hee-il). Non-fiction diary only if you are interested in the younger Korean history and willing to watch some pretty gruesome stuff.

0

Mark Schilling, from the Japan Times, had mixed feelings about Little House. He's one of those film critics whose opinion I trust, we've coincided often.

I have seen several of Leesong Hee-il's films, No Regrets, White Night, and the two shorts Suddenly Last Summer and Going South (reviewed the last three too). That's why I have been so keen on seeing Night Flight, I think Lee's approach is a really sensitive and even addresses taboo issues within taboo issues.

Ah, your blog. I scanned through it a couple of weeks ago and hopefully I'll have time soon to read more and comment. It looks very good! :)

Thanks. Haven't had that much time to update it lately, especially not for reviews (have dozens of unfinished ones... X_X )

Just caught up on a string of dramas last night/this morning...how easily time slips by when you're having fun!

You From Another Star—Such a sweet episode. I agree this might be the episode to come back to if we need to nurse some broken hearts when the ending comes.

Let's Eat—So glad Soo Kyung is giving Lawyer Kim those extremely uncomfortable side glances. It would be hard to believe a sudden interest in one's previous tormentor, no matter how long he had been secretly crushing on you or how cute he looked doing so in previous episodes (from the viewer's angle). The jealousy of Soo Kyung and Dae-Young is a little late in the plotting, but I suppose it's understandable—one day that person is just one of many, then whammo!, a crush hits, and you can't get them out of your mind. I'm not convinced Dae-Young is for her (other than the food blog, I don't feel like we've been shown why they crush on each other...their age difference has been shown to be off-putting...maybe Soo Kyung's mother's loss at the game--losing her daughter to Dae Young--opened Dae Young's eyes to Soo Kyung's appeal? I'd like to see more episodes showing how their relationship is real rather than a shallow crush before I'd ship them, but with time, there could be potential. I guess the pay-off is that the divorcee, who values herself so little, wins out against all her potential rivals by winning the hearts of the single eligible men around her. I like that victory, I just want her with someone who fits her well, especially after all she's suffered in the past.

Potato Star—I marathoned it over the past two weeks. Episode 66 tore my heart out with No Min Hyuk. So that's why he's been acting cold to Jin-Ah! Poor dear. Her heart is already given, but this poor boy is going to need some healing...no admirers in the background so far for him...Loved episode 9, the scene where the asteroid looks like it's going to hit earth. One of the more realistic scifi-ish scenes in Korean drama, last man and woman on earth set-up (or at least impending doom)...

In A Good Way—Caught up to last week's episode. The light is gone from Liu Shan's eyes when he meets Jia En at the gate. Yes he saved her, but at what cost! Without his integrity, he's broken on the shoals of his father's ethics. I find myself caring less about Liu Shan and Jia En as love interests, and more in Liu Shan being able to respect himself again. But I have hope in this drama. It doesn't seem to take shortcuts for fan service in place of real life ethics and relationships. In this it's the best of the Taiwanese dramas I've seen (they tend to be slower, but that's okay with this one, and they tend to have people making less moral choices—more lying to other characters or selfishness—and more inane fan service—but this one rings true in character growth, the messiness of love interests, as well as making the characters not perfect, but still admirable.

Ah drama land...not sure if I should curse or bless the day I met thee. Sleep is becoming second-lead to you, and I may be developing a bit of second-lead syndrome...zzz.

I think with Let's Eat, there are still twists to Dae Young's character we haven't seen which is preventing the romance part a lot more because they are saving twists to his character (and the delivery guy) as plot points down the line, but being able to see the inside of a character is a requirement for building a romance. Mostly I love the food torture--I have to admit. The Okonomiyaki... OMG, flashbacks of Japan. Kansai style, etc. Anyway, I'm sure they are holding back on Dae Young... there are still things we don't know about him. Things move around him, but we don't see into him.

We're seeing the inside of Lawyer Kim's world because he has no plot twits to him, he's pretty straight forward and a bit childish, I think.

I'm oddly satisfied with Let's Eat. Maybe because I began to flirt with the idea that there wouldn't be an OTP at all and found myself rather okay with it. I never thought Lawyer Kim and Soo Kyung would work as a couple, and even though there were scenes between Dae Young and Soo Kyung that displayed their chemistry together (at least imo there were) they didn't seem to like each other so I was fine with it ending with them all being single. As a result, when the romance between Dae Young and Soo Kyung started kicking in, I had already done away with the idea that this would have some soulmate/star-crossed romance between the leads, you know, one where they HAD to be together at all costs. Instead, we're getting something different. Maybe they won't stay together forever, but, for now, I think it's cute that they're beginning to have crushes on each other and I just really enjoy their interactions for some reason. Perhaps it could have been nicer if they had all this build-up and such, but somehow the way they came to grow fond of each other seemed natural to me. Perhaps right now they're relationship doesn't run that deep, but sometimes it's as simple as who do I enjoy spending time with and I think the writers are beginning to portray this well. Sure, it's not perfect and perhaps I would have liked if they had moved a little faster, but I'm actually quite happy with the way things are turning out.

First of, sorry to hear about the thief situation, Kakashi! Also, congrats Carole about your book!

On to drama…

Specials! Specials! I went on a drama specials spree this week. *spoilers possibility ahead*

I missed Jung So Min out of no where, googled her, and found Came to Me and Became A Star. Stupid me, I never thought the title would be literal, but it was. Result: depressed.

So I went on (I watched it on kbsworld youtube) to Can you do Tae Kwon Do. HILARIOUS!! Oh I loved it! As an added bonus, got to see Choi Min Soo being warm and loving as a dad.

Still couldn't sleep…so my next stop was, PUBERTY MEDLEY. For those who love high school dramas, growing up and finding yourself kind of thing…this has got to be IT. It was poignant, funny, full of heart, and the shots were soooo beautiful. I highly, highly recommend it. The hero is the young version in Age of Feelings. He was good!

Anyways my fellow beanies, happy watching!!

The correct way of spelling TKD is 태권도 . I suppose the right way to spell it romanized would be taekwondo. My friends just call it TKD (long before I even considered learning Korean) so that is why I made the mistake of writing it as Tae Kwon Do.

Real life drama has been eating away at my drama viewing time and enthusiasm.

Looking forward to a new ep of In a Good Way in a few hours!

Still loving Miss Korea, and the fact that the OTP really doesn't have a lot of drama between them.

Also watching Can We Eat, Emergency Couple, INR3, Can We Love, The Woman who Married Three Times, and occasionally catching up with Golden Rainbow.

Ate at a Bon Chon restaurant for the first time the other day. I had Bibimbob and the pickled radishes on the side (finally, a Korean side dish I love!). They gave me a sample of the fried chicken, and I have to say, it was pretty awesome. Finished it off with Mochi (Red Velvet, Dark Chocolate Strawberry, and Chocolate). Texted my daughter with a picture while she was at her part time job, and let her know that kpop was streaming on the sound system. She was envious :)

I have been meaning to ask a few questions in OT since..idk..a long time ago, and I'm not sure if they're been discussed before, but here it goes...
1. Is it like the law of kdramas (or maybe dramas in general) to have 4 main actors-actresses as the 1st lead actor-actress & 2nd lead actor-actress? Imo, it kind of ruins the element of surprise, since the hero almost always (or always?) gets the heroine. Why can't it be one 1st lead actor & two 2nd lead actresses, or two 1st lead actresses & one 2nd lead actor, or..well, you all know what I mean, I hope... :D
2. Are there any kdramas that are serials, you know, with season 1, 2, etc like US serials? If not, why?
3. I was pretty sure I had more, but I totally went blank...

Ten and Ten 2 is another one, but they are rare and tend to be on cable networks. They make up for it by having hundreds of episodes of variety shows.

Japanese dramas are more apt to have at least two seasons if it's popular, and one or two specials.

I see. I haven't considered variety shows as serials, but now that you mentioned it... I guess each country has their own preference in TV shows. I just wished that Korean TV producers would consider making drama serials, you know, sometimes when I finish a certain fave kdrama, I just wanted to shout MOAARRR, but then I just had to live with the fact that's its really over. Thanks Shukmeister & Jane the BB :)

#1 - Second Lead Syndrome - when we, the viewers, are cheering for the 2nd lead to get the girl (or guy).

One Korean actor Park Shi-hoo has done this in 2 shows. He was cast as the second male lead but fans liked him so much that the writers let him end with the girl/take over more the storyline a few episodes in. The dramas were "How to Meet a Perfect Neighbor" and "Prosecutor Princess"

0

Required fields are marked *

In Prosecutor Princess, Park Shi-Hoo was always supposed to be the first male lead. Even the posters for it before it aired have him and Kim So-Yeon posing together. Given how the story is laid out though, it's understandable how someone could think that he was supposed to be the second lead. There is, however, another drama, Queen of Reversals, that has him ending up with the lead girl even though he was originally the second lead.

My daughter and I have been watching You From The Stars but she was out of sorts this week so we have postponed watching.

I am keeping my head down so I do not read any spoilers.

I have not watched this weeks Let's Eat either.

I overslept this morning and missed the broadcast of Emergency Man and Woman.

Clearly I am hitting it out of the park with this weeks drama viewing.

I did however watch Last Cinderella, became a fan of Naohito Fujiki (not as conversant with Japanese name order as I am with Korean name order)

And then watched Hotaru no Hidari followed by Hotaru no Kikari 2. These two dramas were pretty darn cute. complete with visiting cats that like to crap. I laughed and laughed about the cat that went on vacation and brought back friends. I have been resistant to JDramas because...well just because, I will not be so resistant to Jdramas in the future.

Happy OT and have a warm and sunny weekend!

YFAS: Is cotton candy goodness, I've got my fingers crossed the finale next week delivers. It seems on track but after the disappointment of MC and PM&I I find myself apprehensive.

The proposal was sweet but that ring resembles Murderous Bro's too much for me to like it.

Miss Korea: Remains lovely, all the characters are so fleshed out I can imagine them going about their every day lives with the usual ups and downs for the next 20/40 years. I don't need a finale for this one it's perfect as is.

Thai Full House: I hate the swindling cousin as expected but I'm shocked at the intensity of my desire to slap Min silly. It's good that the role of second female lead has evolved somewhat but having one that I can unreservedly hate again is kinda nice.

I've been googling for the manhwa Scholar Who Walks the Night, I'm curious about the upcoming drama, but having no luck finding even a mention of it. Can anyone help me out?

Happy Friday!

After seeing it was subbed on KBS World, I finally watched Sirius. Somehow it wasn't quite the thriller I expected, but still it was really good. Estranged brothers will get me every time, and the actors portraying each set of twins were fantastic. Now, I need to stop watching shows that are already out until the end of the semester, or I'll never get stuff done...

I Need Romance 3: Let me just repeat what I say every week -- Wan is wonderful.

Age of Feeling/Inspiring Generation: feels suddenly smaller, but episode 12 was better than 11, and I'm still hanging onto hope for it as a whole. And OMG Shinichi's alive! I was starting to wonder.

Cool Kiz: such a great last game! (And it was great to see Yunho!) I'm interested to see how they keep up suspense/excitement with Tae Kwon Do. Also, I heard that John Park and Jiseok might be staying -- anyone know if that's true?

Running Man: I almost didn't watch it because I haven't seen You Who Came From the Stars yet and figured there would be spoilers, but I think it was worth it. :) Jaesuk and HaHa were especially hilarious, and I loved how the young actress just went with whatever the cast said or did and stuck to her character.

The writer is just that much better w/ regard to character development and staying away from stereotypical characters and moments.

And Lee Yeon-hee is showing that after her brief stint w/ GFB, that she is really turning into an actress.

Her crying/emotional scenes are better done in MK than many other actresses that are more popular/known for their acting (for 2 actresses who have been regularly criticized for their acting, LYH here and KTH in "My Princess" have done a superior job w/ their crying/emotional scenes - maybe not quite up there w/ Gong Hyo-jin but better than so many other actresses I've seen over the past 4-5 years).

Hoot hoot! I missed one evening of drama watching last night and feel sooooo behind. How is that possible? I almost feel pressured by the amount of catching up I have to do over the weekend for just a Thursday night loss of drama watching time, is that good? When I first met kdramas, I combined a lot of marathoning with real time watching. Now the real time stuff I watch pretty much consumes my free time because I've added (and am still adding) new stuff. To the usual list of kdramas and shows I added Screening Humanity:The Children the Sori Couple Love, Yu Huiyeol's Sketchbook, and The Music Show just this week. I'm kind of on a YuHuiyeol kick, he is so funny and passionate (he is also a Kpop Star 3 judge this round with JYP and Yang Hyun suk). Anyhoot, at 5 pm sharp I plan on a mega bring-myself-up-to-date night. I hate the feeling of being an episode behind. Addicted!!

Happy Ot!
I'm glad to see that things are finally looking up in the dramas I am watching. I couldn't watch Can we Love or Miss Korea last week because I think I would have broken my computer with all the angst!

Miss Korea: I have hope again, finally the Vivi team are getting a break. Why can't that Bada president leave them alone already? Just concentrate on your business! I'm a little confused about the actual business. Does Bada own Vivi cosmetics? Does that mean the profit from the lip glosses go to Bada? Or does Bada only own the BB Cream not the company?

I adore Choon Jay, she is so funny. It is very sweet to see the relationship between her and Queen Ma ri. They pretend to dislike each other but you can tell they care for each other deep down. Cute.

Can we love - I can't believe episode 14 ended like that... I can't wait for next week, I have to know what happens next! I'm feeling more and more worried for ji-hyun, I hope she can get her children out of that environment, and I'm glad she and Se-ra understood each other more.. I have no sympathy for Sun-mi because I don't understand why you would do that. Especially to someone who is a dear friend to you, it makes no sense. I hope she puts in a lot of groundwork to make it up to her friend.

Thanks to everyone who mentioned the Thai version of Full House on the past Open threads. I'm so glad that I watched it. Such a brilliant remake, there are probably flaws but I like the rest so much that I don't notice it. It is so good, I love the cast, the storyline makes a lot more sense. I've already caught up, and I can't wait for this week's episodes to air! I think I like Mintra more than in the original Kdrama, maybe it is because her fashion is a little better. I still hate her because she has no sense at all and is mean.

King's family - haven't watched the last 4 episodes, sadly the writer has decided to go save all the secrets until the last few episodes. Disappointing. Unless there is a sudden extension? Doubt it.

We got Married: I've been watching the Yonghwa and Seo hyun couple, I haven't finished yet. But I think it is pretty cool how they play guitar together and recorded that song together. Also the C.N. Blue members are really funny. I've listened to more of their songs; Hey You, Lie, I'm a loner, I'm sorry... That sounds like a conversation between two people! Pretty funny.

I also went to see Dallas Buyers Club at the cinema, it was really interesting. Normally I don't watch these types of films, but I was pleasantly surprised. I think they could have focused on the fact that AZT is Toxic in large doses and that in small does AZT has alleviate a lot of people's suffering from Aids. Or how it works. But I suppose it wouldn't be a good film if it went into the nitty gritty of how the medication prevents Aids. Also the character the film was based on wasn't homophobic at all. In fact the man was probably gay or bisexual, so the film isn't that accurate... But it is adapted from a true story - the struggles he faced were probably true.

Miss Korea - Bada owns the BB cream, and took over the employees. Hyung Joon keeps the brand name Vivi, so all profits from the sale of lip gloss is his and his team's. That Bada director is doing all the nasty things to Vivi because of a personal vendetta against his younger brother, who chooses to work for Vivi instead of Bada. I don't think he gave a moment's consideration to the competition at all, he only wants to get back at his younger brother.

From what I understand Bada brought BB cream from Yoon and as part of that deal BB cream had to be made in Vivi's former factory. So Vivi's factory workers didn't loose their jobs when Vivi itself went bankrupt.

The lipgloss is tied to BB cream success because it looks better with the natural look BB Cream achieves but Bada has no financial connection to Vivi and the products i.e. lipgloss it now produces.

In less rambling terms Bada brought a product knowing it will sell well and Vivi as as the ones who actually invented it know more about it and are using that knowledge to stay in business.

Thanks Patch! I think I understand.

Bada doesn't own Vivi cosmetics, just the BB cream which they are producing under Vivi's old factory.

Therefore the Vivi company still belongs to the team but in order for Yoon to obtain the BB cream in the first place he bought out the business notes from the suppliers causing Vivi Cosmetics to be bankrupt.

So that he could take the BB cream as stated in the investor contract the Vivi team signed. Is that right?

You are right. Vivi lost a huge money making potential in handing over BB cream to Bada, thanks to Yoon. I still can't believe the nerve he had when he told Ji Young that too bad BB cream had to be sold under Bada brand instead of Vivi's. Oh well, I guess it's another example of how realistic this drama portrays life; it's many times the big goliath companies that benefit from the brilliant ideas put forth by the davids out there.

About Can We Love: I have no sympathy for Sum-mi either, I just can understand her...How? How could she do that?! What I love about this show is that everything is resolved soon, the situations/problems does not extend in too many episodes, is a different kind of drama, more mature, I think...

Oh, I also have to give a BIG THANK YOU! for everyone who mentioned "Full House Thai". I am completely in love! It's just perfect! Full House was the first Korean drama I ever watched, so it is a big reference for me. In the Korean version, I was in love with the Rain's character, but in the Thai version I just think Aom-am is priceless!

Yes, I was so relieved that the Sun Mi baby drama is over. Normally this sort of thing is stretched out over 5 episodes, so I'm glad that everything was resolved quickly. I like the style of the drama though, I suppose since the characters are older, there is less faffing around and more action.

I'm disappointed on how she became a desperate monstrous character given that in the early episodes ,I was really happy to see a character who was independent and happy and successful.

Are there 16 episodes or 20 episodes in total for Can we love? I can't find anything about it.

Yes! BIG THANKS YOU's to everyone! I didn't realise how great the characters are. I already liked the original but this remake is even better! I like how Om Am is sassier and funnier than in the previous version! Have you seen the video of Mike and Om singing the OST together, its called Oh baby. They both speak english and sing so well!

Ayan, did you see the Full House interview where Mike lifted Aom up with one arm? (swoons at such masculine strength) Link can be found at Problematic of Unproblematic recap 6.

Yes I did! I was very surprised at his strength, definitely swoon material! :)
The cast are very funny, I for one can't wait until that scene with the Chandelier is shown unless they cut that part out. Do you think that Mike likes Aom in real life - romantically? It seemed like he did or he could just be very friendly sending flowers as an apology.

0

My guess is the chandler is the one in Mike's hotel room in Korea in ep 3, so they did cut the shot where Om-Am kicked and broke it. I would love to see that outtake.

0

Yeah, I totally agree with you, Sum-mi is such a disappointment...

I also don´t know how many episodes Can we love will have, I hope is 20, hehe.

And OMG, I haven´t seen this video of Mike and Oam, I am so gonna watch it, thank you!

I know when I am starting to like to much a show, when the couple is the screen saver of my cel, hehehe. Last week was Liu Chuan and Jia En of In a Good Way (I am completely obsessed about this show) and this week is Mike and Aom, such a cutie!

I had to find episode 50 of Wang Family. I could not stand the angst any longer. The last 10 minutes was sooooooo good. It was unsub but wow....got me all teared up. Then again it could be the aging makeup for the 30 year time jump.

30 year time jump?!!! Wow! I can't wait to see the final episode, that gives me hope to go through the angst filled episodes. I have read the recaps up to episode 38 and things seem to be looking up.
I pray things are looking up, they can't get much worse can they?

I wasn't expecting a 30 year time jump! Wow!
Does anyone die? Doesn't that mean we see Dae-bak grown up, is he married to Mi-ho.. I can't resist, I have to take a sneak peak now!

Congratulations Carole, on your book nomination!! :D

Ayan -

I too have big problems with Sun Mi. The depths that she sank to have the "perfect" family just made me gag. I don't wish her in a ditch, but I sure hope she doesn't end up with Puppy. I'm guessing on time skip happiness for her.

And I'm glad you are enjoying Full House Thai! It was a surprise delight for me, and I'm happy to be SqueeCapping it! Up to episode 8 right now. :-D

Happy Open Thread (Fridays are open thread post where the discussion is user driven rather than host recap driven). It's such a great way to see what other beanies (dramabeans site visitors) are watching and responding to kdramas and other k shows. There is even real life related stuff from time to time. And can get a bit crazy. Just a bit.
I ♥ the dramabean community! Welcome~

OT is Open Thread but it is also Off Topic. Which is just perfect for me, because while I like discussing Korean dramas, I also toss in some TDrama, JDrama, Korean language learning, visits to Korean restaurants, attempts at cooking, music, weather, interesting websites I've discovered, fangirl squeels, and other topics too.

Full House Thai should get honorary status because
1. It is so good
2. It is a remake of a Korean drama
3. JoAnne and Shuk recap it

Maybe I should feel guilty about gushing in delight about something non-Korean Drama on Dramabeans site, but I am too happy to stop.

just had an idea about YFAS.
there are just too many possibilities for awesome scenes if DMJ does not leave. They can´t let the chance slip away to:
- have him walk in on babysitter Yoon Jae totally losing control over his nieces, MJ freezing time and putting things in order, then pulling a prank on yoon jae
- the telekinesis battle between dad and kids
- Song Yi having to play an alien in a movie and asking MJ for advice
- Hwi Kyung has his own investigation firm and some crazy guy bugs him to investigate min joon all the time
- fellow aliens arriving in black suits, sunglasses and with a dog....wiping everyones memory except Song Yi & family, Lawyer Jang, Hwi Kyung and prosecutor
- just MJ mowing the lawn and taking out garbage and being extremely grumpy about it like all men

GosH, February is such a such month....

Thanks to the recommendation by some beanies, am starting to watch, Let's Eat. Hahaha, the food looks so yummy and give me cravings.

Still watching Empress Ki and it's getting good. I hope things don't get too drama like the episodes of the baby switch.

Went through my Cha Seung Won phrase and watched a bit of his movies. He has such onscreen presence. So far Jail Breakers is my fav movie.

Also really digging Kim Sang Joong. He cracked me up in Life is Beautiful and had me awed in The Chaser. Any fans of his out here? Trying to find the show he hosts, I would like to Know. Is this a hour or half hr show and does it still air?

Happy Friday everyone!

YFAS: The story just keeps getting better. Even the Chinese media (China Daily) ran a piece discussing it titled "TV dramas need creative touch," which claims that "You Who Came From The Star and The Heirs have been subjects of hot online discussions throughout Asia. Besides, the book, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, read by the hero in You Who Came From The Star was a hard-to-get item on Amazon for a while...." The article goes on to argue that 2013 was a kind of renaissance for K-Dramas, and even that China should emulate Korea and ditch the cliches. Hoping writers on both sides of the Yellow Sea take heart.

Late posting today. Worked Boys Before Friends this morning. Episode 6 was pretty funny. I actually laughed a couple of times. I find I am getting used to the characters. I really like Piper and Chloe and the actresses who portray them. They seem like the type of women I would have as friends.

I cried through the last 10 minutes of My Love from the Star, not sobbing. But sad for them. I posted a link to it on Viki on Facebook-- meaning I'm going "piblic" with my K-drama viewing. Two positive comments so far. I think some of my friends would really like K-dramas, and YFAS seems like a good one to start with.

Can't wait until A Little Live Never Hurts this week. Jae Min's expression in the last minute was priceless. As I was translating, I noticed that Ha Kyeong says, "You are precious." to him. I want to see THAT in context.

Miss Korea looks like a good one. Not watching, just translating my sections. I worked on a scene that was all about farting in an elevator. Only in a K-drama....I don't think I've ever watched farts being discussed on US TV.

I'm glad the hoopla with the Olympics is over this weekend. It has messed up my drama viewing.

I haven't watched ALNH as of yet...gonna watch both of this weekend's eps in the next few hours. I caught that too in the preview...will they finally admit that they're right for each other and deserve being together?!? Jeez, I hated the whole noble idiocy thing about sacrificing for boring HR...but likely the waters are gonna be "murky" for them now since JM and MJ will be step-sibs (but not blood-related). I think HK's mom will still accept JM because she wanted him as a son-in-law from the beginning!

MK is good! My mom had watched it with me, despite her dislike of LSK's voice since Pasta...but the whole farting in the elevator scene with that sleazeball was what turned my mom off from continuing, haha. But I love MK for being different of what I expected it to be...and

And same here for the Olympics messing up drama watching...although I went back full heartedly to dramas after the whole fiasco with Kim Yu-na's scores. Ugh, that made me quit watching it altogether. But now it's done and dramas are back ;)

Funny pastmidnite. Hello, beanies. Been attending free writing classes every saturday; yesterday was the last day. Hence, I haven't been present on OT. OT time is awkward for me; convenient time is Saturday AM. Now, I'm writing this at 5 AM, Sunday. Whoever does that?! Congratulations on everyone's good fortune the past week. May we all be favoured with good endings this week. Hmm, haven't decided what new dramas to take up. Caught up in the FH Thai version fun with Shuk and JoAnne. Might catch up on reading...The Luminaries on my bedside. If you hear silence from me, it must be because I've got my head buried in it. Sooo deliciously thick. Ciao ciao.

Hi, I'm a newbie to Kdrama <6 months but i've glommed over an impressive number of shows by now. I've just finished Best love and am looking for another show too feed my growing addiction! any suggestions on what next?Only caveat, they should be completed dramas (waiting for YFAS to finish) and nobody should die in the end.

Thanks!

ps: any korean speakers want to be pen pals with me to improve my language skills? I can trade English (or Hindi)

Hi SR! I'm new to Open Thread, and this week celebrate (?) my 1 year addiction to Kdrama! (I'm not sure I should be celebrating what has turned out to be a full-fledged addiction, to the detriment of my housecleaning and renovation projects.) But I have enjoyed myself!

I have just been picking dramas from the ratings list here on DB. So far, with a few exceptions, I agree with the ratings. I've lost count of how many I've watched so far, but I'll bet it's up to 100. I just finished Biscuit Teacher Star Candy last night, and told myself it was just ok. Then I woke up this am, and realized I'd been dreaming about it all night.Guess I liked it a lot!

I usually watch one old drama, along with some current ones. Right now, that's INR3, YFAS, and Let's Eat. I think Let's Eat has been underrated, but that might be because I love food too! It's cute and fluffy, which sometimes is just what a girl needs.
