Kim Sae-ron becomes high school angel

Okay, time is seriously flying by if Kim Sae-ron (Queen’s Classroom, Ajusshi) is going to play a high-schooler. It doesn’t seem right, but the math says she’s a teenager and the casting stories confirm that she’ll be headlining the new KBS teen drama High School as its leading lady. Though the series is being called a remake of the early-2000s school drama Sharp, High School will actually be a fantasy story about an angel who tries to save a high school boy and gets stuck being human. Man, and as a high-schooler at that. As if getting your wings clipped wasn’t bad enough, you get hormones and homework too?

Kim Sae-ron will play the angel who watches over the district where Infinite’s Nam Woo-hyun lives. In trying to save his life, she becomes human (presumably because angels shouldn’t be intervening in human affairs, if angel TV lore has taught me anything). And so she ends up going to high school with him, and is as pure and naive and totally clueless about the world as you’d expect. At least there’s an actual reason for the heroine to be as pure as the driven snow, instead of just “because she’s a girl,” which, gag. But newly human is suddenly far more interesting.

Woo-hyun’s character is a Casanova-type, and his main rival will be played by Lee Sung-yeol (also of idol group Infinite). They’re both popular with all the girls, but it’ll be Kim Sae-ron’s angel who commands their attention. 4Minute’s Nam Ji-hyun has also been cast in a supporting role. It’s being called a “fantasy coming-of-age drama” and with the new supernatural angle, it could be an interesting departure from the usual high school dramas that we see.

High School will be a 20-episode series beginning in June, and the network is still hashing out details over the timeslot.

...she's a teen by definition I guess but she's 13...and they're like 20 something... I mean she's a great actress and I like Infinite but um ew. If they were going to cast someone who's actually around hs age they should have used Yeo Jin Goo or Park Gun Tae and vice versa with actors playing younger than their age. If it goes perfectly well, I guess we could have another Ma Boy (Kim So hyun was 14 and Sungwoong 22). The premise sounds good and I want it to work but gah cringing

more than sure tehre won't be kisses,i think they don't really show if the girl is still a minor...and imagine the guys, even if they are as profesionals i'm sure they will be a little u know romancing a 14 girl i guess...but hey what is an age gap of 10 years

I have to admit that this 13 year old vs 20 year olds does sound kind of cringe worthy.

yeah casting a 13-14 year old with 20somethings as a love interest is just......wrong. It's mildly more acceptable if her leading man is at least a slightly older teen, but the Infinite boys are like 22?

Kim So-hyun was only 13 when she did Ma Boy but at least that one thankfully involved no kissing, hopefully the producers here will also respect Kim Sae-ron's young age.

Some of us DO care. Putting up a 13 year old against 22-24 year olds is getting pretty close to promoting pedophilia.

Don't try to pull that "age is just a number" stuff here. It's not just that she's underage; it's that she barely pubescent (and looks it, tbh). That's a whole 'nother level of creepy.

Just putting her in a position where she's expected to have romantic chemistry with adult men is wrong. But hopefully we're being misled as to what the show's premise entails.

Whole heartedly agree. Age is just a number only AFTER you pass a certain age. 14 is not that number.

I stopped caring about their real age too, BUT when someone is UNDERAGE it is an issue.

For me, being underage isn't really the issue - I mean, if she was 15, that would be a totally different story.
But 13? Yikes, that's really a bit iffy...

Just what is it with movies and tv shows absolutely not being to able to let people play their actual age...`?

Or, they can cast an older girl than Sae-ron. She looks a bit too young anyway to play a high schooler.

Btw, hi, fellow Mad Mireu fan :)

Still, she's still has like 2 years before she even graduates middle school... She must be playing a freshie then.

Still doesn't sound very right. I still remember her as a talented 9 year old or something. Time is going past too fast.

Korean - and many other Asian countries start the age count at 1 instead of 0 like the West does.

Not many Asian countries do that anymore though. China and Japan certainly don't. I think it's only the Koreans who still consider age like that.

0

Yeah, as far as I know, Korea is now the only one to still do it semi-officially. Japan went to the Western system in the 70's, but some older people still use it.

I'm a big fan of Kim Sae Ron and I believe she is talented and mature enough to pay a high-schooler despite her young age.

That being said this casting feels really wrong. Casting a 13-year-old alongside 22/23/24-year-olds really? This is going to be really awkward, especially if they develop a romance angle.
There should be plenty of idols or young actors like Kwak Dong Yun who are more age-appropriate to costar in this drama.

Yeah, I agree. Obviously there's going to be some sort of love triangle with Woohyun and Sungyeol, and I can't imagine a 20 something year old romancing a 14 year old. I know they won't actually be playing their age, but in this instance I can't really wrap my head around how much older they look than her.

Kim Sae Ron is a wonderful little actress, but the boys are definitely miscast. I agree that Kwak Do Yeon, or perhaps Noh Young Hak would've been a better choice.

I wouldn't have minded if the male lead/s had been someone like Park Gun-tae or any of the now-teenage child actor crowd, or even a younger (16-ish) idol. The Infinite boys are way too old to be paired with Kim Sae-ron, I don't know what genius in the casting department thought it was a good idea.

(at least let there be no love line, maybe?)

Since the boys were casted first I think it would have made more sense to cast stars like Park Bo Young, Lee Se Young, Park Se Young or Ha Yeon Soo. And if they were to cast idols I think AOA's Mina or Seolhyun (literally they're ace of angels). They all make believe-able high schoolers and I think they have the acting skills too.

why can't they cast real teen actors to play highschoolers? I mean 17-18 year old teenagers... they cast Lee Min Ho in Heirs (I know...), and now a girl who's only 14?

Is it really so difficult to cast people of an appropriate age? Someone might think that there are only elementary school kids and people old enough to go to the army with nobody in between.

Having taught at a school which had both middle- and highschool classes I know that as little as 3 years of difference makes the students almost different species: physically, intellectually, emotionally. So in real life students with such an age gap wouldn't even interact, maybe beside the younger crowd being chased away from the seniors' favourite spots ("because they are dumb and noisy!").
I haven't seen anything with KSR yet, and by no means do I want to criticize her, but really, either she's too young or the rest of the cast too old. Not to mention the fact that idols tend to be well grown, fine young men - the age difference will even more jarring, I guess.

Or: KSR's character will be a geeeeenius who goes to school with people several years older than herself...

Just doing a very cursory check on IMDB listed over 15 Korean actors and actresses in the 14 to 17 year old range.

So I think it is the Idol Factor at work more than what makes sense.

Yeah, because colleges and universities don't exist in the dramaverse.
I don't mind dramas about children and adolescents, I don't care about idols in dramas (because I hardly watch such dramas ;P) but why do those two go together? Marketing purposes? I don't know...

I think it is pretty much all marketing. I have no objection to idols as actors if they can actually act. But this appears to be yet another case of putting idols in totally for the hype and publicity factor.

But apparently we are in the minority, because such idol-ridden shows do often attract more viewers.

Exactly what I was going to say!! There's a huge difference in casting ADULTS with big age gaps (like LBS -Yoona) than one where the gap might not be as large, but involves a grown man romancing a child.

I like the YA fantasy novel-ish premise of the drama, but I don't think I stomach any supposed romance, no matter how good of an actress she is. I already have a hard time buying into YJG as a office-boyfriend in Potato Star even with his deep manly man voice.

Sure, she is young (15 - Korean age) but it will be the same as Ma Boy! They will have a pure romance with a hug near the end and like hope for the future. I think it will be great. Also they probably cast someone younger so they could focus on the pure and angel aspect and also for the boy's images. Now they have an excuse for the dramas lack of skinship

Saying that she is 15 by Korean standards does not make her any older. If you counted fingers like that, you would have 11 of them.

Grr.. posted before I finished typing.

.. hmm or not. Come to think of it if you counted fingers like you do Western age, you would only have 9 fingers.

Or is zero a number? Or is 1 the first number... I'm so confused :(

I don't know how true it is, but read someplace that the reason that most countries in that region start the age count at one is because there was no way to write "age = 0" on the birth records. That theory sounds a bit shaky to me though.

0

Required fields are marked *

Well, no matter whether the counting system starts at 1 or 0, at the end of the day, the age difference between Sae-ron and the guys is still the same. Like you said above, this is bordering on pedophilia.

The age does bother me because I'm guessing there's some romance in it..? I am all for age-gap romance but she is 13/14 (!), too young to be romancing 23/24 yr olds. Either they needed younger guys or an older female lead.

The problem is that this is a kdrama and romances are rarely pure (not prudish, pure).

What I mean is, Kawaguchi is 16 in the live-action Ouran while Yamamoto was 23-24, but that was not in any way compromising the teenage actress, since the romance was very PG-13 and cartoonish and what was mostly explored was their friendship and how they care for each other as people and buddies within a group.

They were mindful of the fact that the actress is a minor, but beyond that, the characters were the same age, so having a romantic angle was not creepy.

Korean dramas just don't have that slice of life quality about them. They inject makjang and "passion" and such, which would definitely take this into creepy territory. I don't think I trust a kdrama to be sweet and pure enough to make such a crush type of romance work without the actress being in some way or other put in very age inappropriate conditions.

I read the first line and then stop for a moment to do the math. SHE'S ONLY THIRTEEN.
Seriously, the story's really interesting, but casting a thirteen year old against twenty-two and twenty-three year old male leads is too much. There are so many other age appropriate actresses who can act quite well, why can't they cast anyone from among them? I DO NOT like this.

Since the Infinite boys were casted first, then I think that Saeron should be replaced with an older actress. Not hating against her, but she is young, and you can't change that. She WOULD fit a role like this, but she can't be in a love triangle with college-age guys. IT'S JUST WRONG. Plus, in some comments, ppl say that idols should be replaced with actors. Well, both Woohyun and Sungyeol ARE actors, and they have experience. Not as much as the main lead, but they still have talent nevertheless. Besides, what's wrong with using idols to get more views? It's working, isn't it?
