Coming-of-age drama Plus Nine Boys completes cast

How adorable. Upcoming tvN drama Plus Nine Boys, about four boys aged 9, 19, 29, and 39, has found its leading foursome, and child actor Choi Ro-woon of Gold Rainbow and Good Doctor has signed on to be the newest and youngest cast member. I guess when you’re this cute and talented at the ripe age of 7, you just go straight to headlining roles. He even gets his own rom-com storyline! He’ll be joined by Oh Jung-se (A New Leaf), Kim Young-kwang (Good Doctor), and idol Yook Sung-jae (Answer Me 1994) in the drama about age, boys, and growing up.

The drama will take an unusual approach in following four boys who each face different struggles at the cusp of a new decade in life. It’ll play up the common belief that the ninth year (or anything plus nine) is always cursed and brings about more hardship than usual. Choi Ro-woon plays the 9-year-old character, a child actor who got his start doing food spots because of his healthy appetite. He becomes a celebrity in his own right, described as highly professional and composed even at his age, and he’s been secretly dating an 8-year-old child actress for two years. Pfffft. Best Love, the pint-sized version?

Yook Sung-jae plays a 19-year-old high school senior and judo athlete. He dreams of going to college for judo, and he’ll be throwing every ounce of his hot-blooded youth and passion into winning a gold medal in his competitive matches and getting into his dream school. Kim Young-kwang plays a carefree 29-year-old tour planner for a large vacation travel company. His character will be fashionable down to his socks and underwear, which strikes me as rather neurotic, but okay. The thing they don’t explicitly tell us is how these boys are connected, but given that their character names are Kang Dong-gu, Kang Min-gu, and Kang Jin-gu, I’m just gonna go out on a limb and guess they’re brothers.

Oh Jung-se is the only one who has a different surname — Gu, for nine, which is fitting since he’s the one who has this horrible ninth-year curse. His character is a variety PD who ends up losing his prime position as the PD of the country’s leading music program when a band he casts ends up flashing the audience on live TV (based on true events at MBC). Since then, he’s struggled to get back on his feet and break his curse. Maybe he can get some pointers from the 9-year-old who’s juggling a star career and a secret celebrity dating scandal.

Plus Nine Boys follows Marriage Not Dating and airs Fridays and Saturdays in August.
