News bites: April 18, 2015

Suzy

  • Bae Suzy (Gu Family Book) is considering an offer to co-star with Zhang Han (Chinese version of Boys Over Flowers) in a historical Chinese drama called Silk Night (the literal translation is “silk garments night travel,” a phrase used to describe a situation in which one succeeds, but no one recognizes the achievement). The show will be a dramatization based on an eponymous novel, and Zhang will play a man who travels back in time to become a protector of the imperial family. [Dong A]
  • So Ji-sub has personally invested in the feature film Vampire Girl Who Walks the Night (really? That title?), which was written and helmed by rookie Iranian-American director Ana Lily Amirpour. The movie is about a vampire girl who lives in a fictional Iranian town called Bad City, and as she haunts the townspeople, she’ll meet a lonely human boy and fall in love. While So has invested in films jointly with a production company in the past, this was his first solo investment, and he is said to be listed in the credits. The film traveled the festival circuit last year and became available on iTunes on March 20. [Sports Kyunghyang]

  • Minho, Onew

  • In more SHINee news, bandmember Min-ho (Medical Top Team, To the Beautiful You) will make his big screen debut in Grandma Gye-choon, in which he’ll play boyfriend to high school student Kim Go-eun (Eungyo). (The Korean title of the movie is Gye-choon Halmang; halmang means grandma in Jeju dialect, and Gye-choon is the grandmother’s name.) Kim’s character goes missing after an accident, and the film will be about her dramatic reunion with her grandparent ten years later. Yoon Yeo-jung (Yeo-jung noona!) will play the vivacious and strong Gye-choon who’s been a diver on Jeju Island her whole life. The warm family movie is sure to wring tears and emotions when it hits theaters in the fall. [Dong A]
  • Onew (of SHINee) is considering a supporting role in Descended From the Sun, the upcoming melodrama penned by Kim Eun-sook (Heirs) and starring Song Hye-gyo as an army surgeon who falls in love with special forces soldier Song Joong-ki as they work together in foreign disaster areas. Onew is up for the part of Song Gye-gyo’s hoobae doctor in what would be his drama debut (he had previously been in the sitcom Royal Villa and a web drama). The show will air on KBS during the latter half of the year. [MBN]

  • Woo Hee-jin

  • Woo Hee-jin (Healer) is finalizing negotiations to appear in the daily drama A Daughter Just Like You. The show will be about three households who become an extended family; one house is headed by the TV hostess of a home shopping channel, who’s raised her three daughters as strong alpha women. Woo is the eldest daughter, a psychology professor, and Lee Soo-kyung (Let’s Eat) is also in negotiations to play the middle daughter. The new daily airs on MBC after Apgujeong Midnight Sun concludes in mid-May. [Xports News]
  • We might have to change this post’s title to Idol news bites: First Exo’s D.O. kept getting offered acting gigs, then bandmate Chan-yeol appeared in Jang-soo Company, and now member Su-ho has landed his own spot in an upcoming indie film called Glory Day. About four 19-year-old friends and the night that changes all of their fates, the film is expected to put a unique spin on the typical coming-of-age story. Glory Day will be helmed by Choi Jung-yeol, who’s won several short film awards, and filming will begin in May. [TV Report]
  • Rude Miss Young-ae is back for season 14; the mockumentary has been added to tvN’s lineup for the beginning of August. It will air on Mondays and Tuesdays and obviously brings back the titular heroine (Kim Hyun-sook), but the rest of the cast hasn’t been finalized yet. Congratulations to Kim, who got married and had a child after wrapping the 13th season last July. [My Daily]
  • Adorable luggage couple (and co-stars of Grandpas Over Flowers in Greece) Choi Ji-woo and Lee Seo-jin have shot a CF together, and… can’t they just get together already?! [Osen]

LOL that rumour is just ridiculous.

0

The rumors is just ridiculous..obviously it is someone else but anti fans speculate it is her

0

Wealth and status? Choi Ji Woo is a wealthy woman in her own right, you know that?

0

I doubt CJW is focusing on wealth when it comes to love. She dated Lee Jin Wook in 2009 when he was a new actor who barely made a name for himself. I am sure he didnt make as much money as now.

0

Huh. Sounds like a line quoted from a Kdrama. But I understand that CJW is a wealthy Hallyu star and has international celebrity status. And is about 40 years old. I really doubt she is gold-digging anywhere.

0

She dated Lee Jin Wook???!!!! (Envious pangs invading my heart..)

0

"i heard some rumor that CJW is materialistic woman who prefer wealth and status"
kind of nasty comment here *sad*
lets not bring rumors into conversations, especially if its baseless claims.

I don't know exactly the relation with GHJ's ex husband - but LJJ's GF is ex wife of (one of) Samsung's heir.

Go Hyun Jung was married to the Samsung CEO's nephew. She got a divorce but lost custody of her 2 children. She is not even allowed to see them which is so sad. She went back to acting in hope that her children can at least see her on tv.

But her Ex is a chaebol and we all know chaebols have the power to delete you from all forms of media just by ordering their assistant. lol Well, they do it in dramas anyways.

They may have taken her children but they can't take her freedom haha. She is more successful now than she ever was before. Two well deserved Daesang awards. She is the face of Lancome in Korea, endorser of LG Electronics etc etc... They'll never be able to delete her. She is loved by the public and she is not going anywhere.

0

Really? I guess what I see in the dramas are true then - how the rich man's family can take custody rights of the children away from the mother. So insane. Wouldn't happen in the U.S., unless of course she had some serious mental issues, etc.
How can they deny her visitation rights at least? Makes me mad just thinking about it.

Man this #1 is turning out to be like a K drama plot.

yep, it's idol news bites all right. Thankfully the news is all for supporting roles, and I have no objections at all to Suzy (anything as long as she's not stinking up Korean dramas/movies that I might otherwise have an interest in watching, but my sympathies to Chinese viewers). Who knows, she might even learn to act this time.

And Grandpas Over Flowers really is wildly successful, isn't it? I think it's got the highest ratings of any cable show ever, which is impressive considering they're higher than the ratings of even some top-rated public broadcast dramas!

I think you're being too harsh on Suzy. Yeahx sure, her acting in dramas have not been that good, but she was literally 16 whenever she starred in Dream High, and she had no child acting experience to back her up. We'll have to see about her new movie before we judge.

I'd believe that if it wasn't for the fact that 17-year-old IU debuted in the same drama with no previous experience and turned out to be a much better actress.

Honestly, Suzy wasn't THAT horrible an actress in Dream High. She started out unbelievably wooden, but warmed up a lot as the drama progressed. She's been good in some of her more recent roles, such as Architecture 101. Definitely needs a lot more experience under her belt before she should take on any more meaty lead roles, but honestly that applies to 90% of idol actors... and plenty of actor-actors/actresses in drama land too. IU is also very likeable onscreen and she's an decent actress but still very much an idol-actor.

Required fields are marked *

Still think that IU & Suzy should stick with what they do best and that is singing. Leave acting to the actors.

0

Honestly, Suzy started out so bad that I think people just don't expect as much from her and anything she does manage exceeds those low expectations.

She's lucked into working with writers who were skilled enough to accommodate her lack of acting skill but that's it, really. I don't think time will improve her any more than it has Han Ga-in.

0

"Architecture 101" was one of Suzy's earlier projects (was filmed the same year as "Dream High" and released the year after) and that was her best acting job.

Not coincidentally. 101 was also Han Ga-in's best acting job) a good script and a director who knows what he/she is doing can make all the difference.

And yes, while some "actors" improve over time w/ experience, as we have seen with many child actors (such as Yeo Jin-goo in his very 1st role as a 7 yr old in "Sad Movie"), there are those who have the talent/skill from the outset.

I like Suzy, but at the same time, I wish PDs would let talented young actors get the lead roles and let idols wanting to get into acting work on their skills in secondary supporting roles until they show they can take the next step (there are, of course, idols who have more natural talent, much less even idols who started off as kid actors).

0

Lol the Chinese viewers don't need your sympathies, since they have a better mechanism for coping with having poor actresses onscreen.

From your comments, one would think that we have just escaped a plague. It's just a drama, Korean or Chinese, no big deal.

The Iranian film is actually called "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night", and was shot in the US with an Iranian-speaking cast. It is BEAUTIFUL and well-written, and OMG so poignant and stylish. It put me in mind of "Only Lovers Left Alive" (and later I found out that Lily Amirpour is a huge Jim Jarmusch fan, so there you go.) There is gore, just not an enormous amount, and 'Bad City' is not a nice place, even if it has a few good people. So Ji Sub has good taste in cinema.

You can rent it or buy a d/l from Amazon; and it's worth every penny.

Why are people being harsh on Suzy? I admit her acting isn't great but it's not that crap. Give the girl a chance, China does have the scope to accept all the bad acting though. Most of their dramas are copycats or badly written anyway. With her boyfriend's reputation she would get the interest in China. I think she should just get married early to end viewers pain though.

I'm not sure I agree with C-dramas being mostly copycats and badly written.. There are too many out there, and a lot are written well.

My main complaint with C-dramas is that the government regulates the ending.. Most C-dramas end well. It's as if the government thinks that the Chinese audience can't handle bad endings. Or, that unresolved, untidy endings will give people... ideas.

Yes, there are many Chinese channels and each station produces their own series. We haven't included Hong Kong tvb series and Taiwan have their own also. That's why China can absorb all the poor writers, actors and actresses. They seem pay the artists lots of money too. The Chinese government will intervene and make sure it is politically correct (or to their taste). This is dumbing down creativity.
