Mask: Episode 9

Ji-sook and Min-woo grow ever closer in spite of themselves, and in spite of Seok-hoon’s attempts to control Ji-sook. But she’s less willing to take orders these days, and is ready to take charge of her own life regardless of what Seok-hoon plans for her. Unfortunately, as her family’s situation becomes more desperate, Ji-sook may have to make a difficult choice — her increasingly-loving husband, or her family?

EPISODE 9: “My Own Reflection”

After being stopped for speeding, Ji-sook is taken to the station and asked to submit to fingerprinting. She struggles, and Min-woo arrives to find her surrounded by several cops. He confirms that she’s his wife, and takes her with him. Outside the station, he offers her the keys to the car, only asking that she let him know where she’s going when she feels comfortable doing so.

Meanwhile Ji-hyuk enters Jung-tae’s apartment to find him there unconscious, and approaches him with the syringe that Director Shim gave him. Ji-sook rushes to get there before he can do something he can’t take back, but her car runs out of gas and she’s forced to get out and run. She stops again when she nearly runs right into Director Shim outside the building.

Inside, Ji-hyuk raises the syringe, but his eyes land on photos of Jung-tae with his parents and he has second thoughts, and leaves. Ohthankgoodness. But Ji-sook overhears Shim talking on the phone about disposing of a body, and is horrified to discover they’re talking about Ji-hyuk. It’s not clear who ordered him killed — Shim says he just does what he’s paid to do.

When Ji-hyuk comes outside he’s surprised to see Director Shim there, but he tells Shim that he couldn’t do it. He goes with Shim but before they can get in the car, Ji-sook comes out of hiding to scream at her brother, “You can’t Ji-hyuk! Run away from them! Right now!”

All three men freeze at the shock of seeing her, but thankfully Ji-hyuk recovers first and gives the two thugs a shove, and runs for his life. He and Ji-sook escape together, and Ji-sook can’t hide the fact that she’s alive any longer. Both of them burst into tears, and Ji-sook hugs her little brother and apologizes.

At the Choi house, Min-woo asks his sister if she wants to break up his marriage. He knows she’s against it since it allows him to take over the company with Eun-ha’s family’s support, but Mi-yeon denies that she cares about the company. He asks why she gave him the pen if it wasn’t to break them apart, and she asks if he trusts his wife.

Min-woo says that he can tell she’s trustworthy when he looks in her eyes, and his sister laughs at his naivete. She says she truly doesn’t care about his marriage — what she cares about is Seo Eun-ha affecting her marriage. She points out that he knows his wife and Seok-hoon are more than in-laws, so why can he trust them?

Instead of answering, Min-woo says that he believes that if you look into a person’s eyes, you can see yourself, but only if they don’t avoid your eyes. He asks if she’s seen her reflection in Seok-hoon’s eyes, and says that he has seen his in Ji-sook’s eyes, and that’s why he trusts her.

Ji-sook gives Ji-hyuk a giant pile of cash and tells him to take it and hide, and that there’s more money coming. Ji-hyuk throws it in the air and demands that she stop playing games and come home. But she can’t, and bends to pick up the money. She yells at him to help pick it up: “This is money! This is what I’ve come this far for.”

At bedtime that night, Mi-yeon tries to see herself in Seok-hoon’s eyes. He avoids her gaze and gives her a halfhearted “I love you,” and goes to bed alone.

Ji-sook goes to Eun-ha’s old apartment, remembering the words written in her high school yearbook: “If you wear a mask, you can’t ever be happy.” Words that once gave her so much hope. Now she sees the spectre of Eun-ha glaring at her, and hears different words: “If you don’t wear a mask, you can never survive.”

Min-woo is waiting up when she gets home, and asks if she handled everything. He notices scratches on her arm and she insists she’s fine, but she stumbles and he catches her. He reminds her that she was the one who said they should help each other, but now Ji-sook’s voice sounds dead as she says that he can’t help her.

The next day, Ji-sook confronts Seok-hoon about whether he knew of her mother’s illness, and he admits that he also knows everything that’s going on with Ji-hyuk. He says that she’s in quicksand and needs to call for help, but makes a point to say she could ask him, not Min-woo.

Ji-sook just retorts that nothing had better happen to her brother, though Seok-hoon says that’s up to her. She asks what he wants and is surprised when he says that he wants Min-woo destroyed. Help him do that, and he’ll guarantee her brother’s safety.

Ji-sook only asks what’s in it for her, and says that she wants to live her life as Seo Eun-ha, including requesting that he reactivate Eun-ha’s bank account. Seok-hoon gets this evil grin, knowing he’s finally getting what he wants, and laughs in her face to take off the mask.

Min-woo isn’t even trying to pay attention at work the next day, too preoccupied with his thoughts of Ji-sook. Ji-sook herself isn’t any more focused, and actually gets lectured by her coworker to stop daydreaming and flirting with her married boss. HA.

Mi-yeon thinks this is hilarious, and pipes up that the boss’s wife is no joke, and very experienced with men. But Min-woo calls Ji-sook out to talk, which rescues her for the moment but reinforces her coworkers’ idea that there’s something going on between them.

Min-woo takes her to lunch to ask what’s wrong with her lately, admitting that he can’t stop thinking about it. Aww, he takes her for her favorite soup, though he calls her self-centered when she points it out. They go for a walk, and Min-woo waxes a little poetic about the beautiful surroundings, and says he wonders sometimes if he’s happy and lucky to be born a chaebol, or miserable that he has to fight for his position in his family.

Ji-sook asks what kind of person he thinks he is, and Min-woo admits that he just wants to live a normal life with the woman he loves. He asks her the same question, and in answer she reaches up to flick a leaf off his lapel, and leaves her hand curled over his heart. She says that someday she’ll tell him, and if he still feels the same way then, maybe they can be together happily.

They get back to their car to find Director Shim and his minion waiting, having scratched the paint while parking. Min-woo tells him he doesn’t need to pay for the damage, but Shim pointedly says that he ALWAYS pays his debts. He leaves his card with Min-woo, and makes a big deal over how much Ji-sook looks like a dead woman he knows.

Ji-sook goes to a restroom to call Shim, and he pops up right behind her. Ugh, he’s so slimy, reminding her that he wants his money right away, and she promises to pay it by the end of the month. It’s not good enough, and Shim demands three hundred million won (about $270,000) by midnight, in cash, in return for Ji-hyuk’s life.

Ji-sook goes straight to the bank, but her account has been closed for withdrawals. She tries selling all of Eun-ha’s designer bags, but it’s nowhere near enough money. She almost calls Seok-hoon, but instead she goes to Min-woo for the money, claiming the share she was supposed to get in the marriage. Even though she can’t tell him what it’s for, Min-woo agrees to give her the money. She thanks him for trusting her, and promises to pay him back one day.

But even Min-woo has trouble getting his hands on that much cash, and asks poor Chang-soo if he’s got any money. Chang-soo pouts, but agrees to empty his savings for his boss. I love these two guys together, so cute.

They meet Ji-sook to hand off the money and find her getting the third degree from her chatty coworker, but before anyone can say anything, Min-woo is detained by the district prosecutor who’s investigating Jung-tae’s death. Aw damn, someone either got to Jung-tae after Ji-hyuk left, or he was already dead. They see the bag of money Min-woo’s carrying, which just looks bad, but Ji-sook offers to testify that the money was for a loan to her.

The cops think the cash was bribe money from Jung-tae, though at this point it’s assumed that he killed himself. Min-woo starts to act strangely while he’s being questioned, zoning out and seeming oddly sleepy, until finally Seok-hoon arrives as his lawyer.

Seok-hoon gets Min-woo out of there on a technicality, and he just wants to go home, saying he’ll talk to Ji-sook later. Seok-hoon hands her the bag of money, saying she should have just asked him for help, and offers her a ride to deliver it to Director Shim.

She asks if he killed Jung-tae, but he non-answers that he heard it was a drug overdose. Otherwise, he points out, it could have been that Ji-hyuk murdered him, and he brandishes the syringe with Ji-hyuk’s fingerprints on it. He tells her to decide what he should do with it — throw it away, or hand it over to the police?

Later Seok-hoon tells the family about being questioned regarding Jung-tae’s possible bribes to Min-woo, and Dad orders Min-woo to explain about the cash he was carrying. Ji-sook speaks up that the money was for her, and Min-woo confirms that it was his personal money from his accounts.

Seok-hoon even pipes up to say that Jung-tae’s death is still under investigation and may have been suicide, and for some reason Min-woo doesn’t defend himself when Dad asks if he had anything to do with this. Later Ji-sook asks Seok-hoon if this is how he plans to bring Min-woo down, and Seok-hoon says this is only the start.

According to his plan, Ji-sook will be the one to destroy him. He wants her to plant a certain book in Min-woo’s secret room, saying that it’s a special book that can save her brother. It’s her choice — Min-woo, or Ji-hyuk.

Ji-sook sits in her room that night, thinking over her options, and she notices Min-woo standing by the pool also looking deep in thought. She joins him, and he asks if someone really died because of him. She says that it was her fault, and he asks if she knows something but she doesn’t answer, and he says that usually secrets and pain go together.

He offers her one of his secrets, and says that he doesn’t remember what she said before she fell in the pool and was hospitalized that day. But he does remember trying to strangle her. Ji-sook remembers seeing Eun-ha’s lifeless body but doesn’t speak, and Min-woo asks her to stop staring at him and leave.

We see a flashback to a time soon after Min-woo came to live in the Choi home, and he cries and begs his father not to make him go in the pool. Dad yells that it’s just water, and calls him a loser. Adult Min-woo thinks to himself over and over, “I’m not weak. I’m not weak,” and steps into the pool fully clothed.

He instantly panics, and starts to go under. Back in her room, Ji-sook sees him floating unconscious and jumps in to pull his head out of the water, and he’s still unconscious when the EMTs take him inside.

Min-woo dreams of his childhood with his mother, and of that one happy day he spent with Ji-sook at the market. He sees them waltzing as if all alone, and sleeping unclothed in the car the night they were stranded. Last, he remembers kissing her, and imagines waking to see her smiling face by his bed.

He reaches up to pinch her cheek, and she says that this isn’t a dream. He lets go of her face and she instantly fusses at him for scaring her to death. He asks who changed his clothes, and we see that she did it, though she tells him it was the nurses. Hee.

It’s Ji-sook’s turn to bring Min-woo porridge, and she echoes his exact words from when she was sick, offering to blow on it if it’s too hot, or even feed him. Then she whacks him and tells him never to do that again, because what would she do without him? This is the best thing ever.

HAHAHA, he pretends that her smack made him soooo weak, and he can barely hold the spoon, and takes her up on her offer to feed him. Then he whines that she spit on his food when she blows on it, and they adorably bicker forever over whether or not she spit.

Unfortunately Seok-hoon intrudes on this mutual explosion of cuteness, and tells Ji-sook to go to work. Min-woo tries to let her off the hook but she agrees that she should go, and Seok-hoon gives her an envelope that supposedly contains concert tickets and tells her to take her “nanny.” She opens it outside the room to find a check for one hundred million won.

Once alone, Seok-hoon tells Min-woo that the family thinks he slipped and fell into the pool. He says that he thinks Min-woo was responsible when Eun-ha “fell” in the pool, which is why he’s worried now. He’s afraid other family members could be in danger, and urges Min-woo to get treatment. Min-woo laughs dryly that Seok-hoon just wants him committed.

The rumors are flying at the office, since Gossip Girl saw Min-woo taken away with a bag of money, and Mi-yeon actually takes Min-woo’s side — why would he need bribes when he’s already so rich? Another employee snickers that she just doesn’t understand rich people.

Ji-sook stands to say that their boss isn’t like that, and storms out of the room. The other employees cluck over her obvious crush on him, and Mi-yeon watches her curiously. Aside from the fact that they don’t know Ji-sook is already married to him, I’d say they’re not far off about her feelings.

It turns out that Seok-hoon had planted a seed in Ji-sook’s head earlier, that Min-woo belongs in a mental hospital, attempting to convince her that “bringing him down” would actually be helping him. She thinks about her mother’s illness, and takes the check from Seok-hoon to Ji-hyuk.

He gives the money to his parents, and Mom is furious that he won’t say where the money is from. Dad just asks her to get the treatment and worry about the source of the money later, and Ji-hyuk swears he didn’t get it as a loan or steal it. Stuck, he promises to tell them where the money is from if Mom will use it to get treatment. Mom agrees, and he drops the bomb that it came from Ji-sook.

Ji-sook stays late at the office and when she’s alone, she opens the safe in Min-woo’s office to find a wedding photo of the two of them, and a key to Min-woo’s secret room. Ji-sook goes home and climbs the stairs nervously, remembering Seok-hoon telling her that this is for the best, since Min-woo belongs in a hospital before he kills someone else and maybe even himself.

Seok-hoon goes to visit Min-woo in the hospital to make sure he doesn’t catch Ji-sook planting the book, but Min-woo isn’t there. Inside the secret room, Ji-sook is faced with what probably looks like the inside of Min-woo’s mind — newspaper clippings, handwritten notes, and photos of his mother everywhere. There’s even a board with a “list of suspects”, with his father and stepmother right at the top.

She stops to look through the book she’s supposed to plant, and finds an envelope between the pages. Inside is a contract hiring Jung-tae’s construction company, and a big fat check. Well, that could look bad.

Ji-sook hears someone coming into the room downstairs, and quickly shoves the envelope contents into her pocket and runs out of the secret room. She sees Min-woo standing in the doorway downstairs, having seen her just come out of the room he told her never to enter. “What were you doing in there?” he asks, looking up at her guilty face. “Answer me. What were you doing in there?!

COMMENTS

I’m glad to see Ji-sook finally waking up from her funk, and taking charge of her life. It was good to see her standing up to Seok-hoon again, and telling him what she wants out of this whole fiasco (and I also notice that she didn’t actually agree to help take down Min-woo, she just let him think she agreed to it). I understand why her response to everything was to shut down for a while, because she was dealing with a lot of emotional upheaval – in her life, in her family’s life, and it seems like she can’t cut a break. It must have felt easier to just bow her head and try not to make waves. But now it feels like she’s realizing that if she wants to come out of this alive and intact, not to mention help her family pay their debt and get Mom the treatment she needs, she’s going to have to be more proactive. And that includes standing up to Seok-hoon, and opening up to Min-woo.

I think it was telling that, when Ji-sook needed money right away (and not a full day after Seok-hoon warned her NOT to go to her husband for help), the first person she asked to help her was Min-woo. That was a risk, because he’s her best chance for a supportive partner in this crazy family, and it could so easily have backfired on her. But instead Min-woo chose to trust her, and that says a lot about how he feels about her now. I think, on some level, he knows this isn’t the Eun-ha he used to know – though he doesn’t know how very literal that will turn out to be – and he knows she’s worthy of his trust. The fact that he gives it before she’s earned it, is his way of telling her that he’s trustworthy, too.

And Ji-sook’s attitude towards Min-woo is changing too, to his face and behind his back. She seems on the verge of truly opening up to him, and we’re finally seeing that glimmer that she cares for him that I’ve been wanting to see. I melted when she put her hand over his heart and said that maybe someday they can be happy together. And when she stood up for him in front of his employees, I wanted to cheer. She’s finally seeing him for the good person he is, even AFTER he told her that he believes he choked her/Eun-ha, and she’s not afraid to defend his honor.

On the other hand, Seok-hoon is sinking deeper into his madness, becoming even more controlling of Ji-sook. I’m still not sure why he’s so intent on destroying Min-woo, because it honestly doesn’t seem personal — he’s never shown Min-woo any hostility on a personal level, and he’s never stated any hatred towards Min-woo himself (other than the fact that he was marrying the woman Seok-hoon loved). I suspect that Min-woo is just another obstacle to Seok-hoon’s achieving his goal of becoming successful and powerful, which he’s convinced himself will be his way to making a better world for the poor and weak. I think it’s pretty batcrap crazy to think that he can help the poor and the weak by becoming a murderer who crushes anyone who gets in his way. Especially since you’d think, if that’s his goal, he’d be already doing things like donating or volunteering, since he already is a powerful lawyer with access to gobs of money. And he already has a wife who would love him if he would just let her, and a family who seems to respect him quite a lot based on some things that Min-woo’s father has said to him. Ironically, if he would just pay attention, Seok-hoon already has the things he so desperately wants.

But like I said, I don’t think Seok-hoon is entirely sane any longer. He’s twisted things up in his mind so thoroughly, that actual logic no longer enters into it. I think he’s so focused on the “becoming rich and powerful” part of his plans, that the “helping others” part has become nothing more than the excuse he uses to justify his actions. The money and power have ceased to be the means he thinks will allow him to change the world, and have become his actual goal. And once he’s lost sight of the noble ideals he once had, there’s nothing to stop him from justifying any horrific action in the pursuit of power.

I love how loving and trusting Minwoo has become and wish the mind games would stop so Jisook and him can just get regularly "stranded" in the cold woods at night.

Everyone else can feck off.

Well, maybe Miyeon can divorce her crazy vampire prosecutor hubby and find a man who will love her the normal way she wishes for. And she canbe bffs with Jisook too.

So it really bothers me that at the police station they were going to forcibly fingerprint her (Um, she's standing right there telling you she's Seo EunHa and you're looking at her picture on the computer screen)... especially when they never bothered to fingerprint the dead body and/or use dental records to confirm the death of JiSook - the family's identification of the body is not enough for a death certificate!

Yup, not realistic at all, just a plot device to give her something to argue about with the cops.

How come isn't the family's identification enough? The dental records and/or fingerprints (if soft tissues are preserved) are being used on unidentified bodies especially after severe accidents where there is no other way. If a family can proceed with the identification based on facial features (provided they exist) and other unique characteristics such as tattoos, scars or birth marks there's no need for further coroner's examination. Though, I'm not sure this procedure is identical globally it can't be extremely different between countries since Medical Examination is the same everywhere.

Cause of death is also part of the death certificate and there would need to be an investigation - suicide vs. accident etc. that would constitute an autopsy or other measures to determine the cause of death. It is possible that this varies by country but I highly doubt the families word would be enough.

I agree with @Camille W on that, Jenn. JS had already sent her family the video-file anouncing her suicide - and after having killed the loanshark, according to SH. If the family refuses autopsy for certain reasons I don't think there's a way for any medical examiner to proceed with the case. Especially in this case, in which death by drowning would have been so easy to be determined anyway.

@Jenn I agree with the comments above too. Identification by family members is accepted for corpses. Plus, u have to remember that an investigation into EH's death was already covered up by SH in any event.

All I can say is Ji Sook you had better have a backup plan for following what Seok Hoon says and going into your husband's secret room after he has expressly told you not to! Otherwise I have never seen a character so damned dumb! Excuse my French. Min woo has to be head over heels in love with his wife to let this slide as he has let so many other things slidein the past .

"Ji-sook JUST TELL HIM ALREADY! And figure out a plan to get out of this. The man already loves you and will do anything for you! "Or is she trying to protect her husband by keeping silent?

I like Mi Yeon more and more. She genuinely loves her brother and just wants her marriage to work. I love the way she stuck up for him when the office gossips were having a field day with Min woo. Boy, will they eat their words when they find out what Ji Sook's and Mi Yeon's true identities are!

Loved the scenes where Min woo and Ji-sook were alone! They were so romantic and at ease with each other! They are really selling their romance. I hope to see more of these scenes.

Yesss to Mi Yeon! I really liked her conversation with Minwoo when they discussed trusting their respective partners. I think MW knows MY doesn't really care much about the company, and so she seems a bit harmless to him. More than anything he knows how much she cares about her husband.

Thanks so much LollyPip!

I really enjoyed this episode and your recap.

Might I call this an episode of Seok Hoon vs Min Woo in getting Ji Sook to ask them for help? I was laughing that each offered her help at different times and that Seok Hoon was so determined that ultimately he'd drive her to go to him instead of Min Woo, but that she still chose Min Woo. Such a male-ego thing, I felt LOL!

SH was satisfied only because he had the trump card of being a prosecutor/lawyer who could get Min Woo out of trouble with the police? (that he himself had engineered) just so that he could be the one to hand the money over to Ji Sook and drive her to deliver it.

In SH's plan to destroy Min Woo, the element of getting MW's girl/wife is becoming a big factor. SH himself may not be aware of it, but he's being swayed more and more by jealousy over a woman. I feel it was seeing Ji Sook walk out of the house with Min Woo that got SH to engineer more ways to control her and keep her with him in this episode.

And I have to sigh... Ji Hyuk, how could you leave your prints on the syringe? Surely you wore gloves and should have wiped down that syringe. Now Shim and SH (or rather Shim with SH because I believe SH's behind everything) have additional leverage over poor Ji Sook.

This episode gave us a better glimpse of what SH may have planned by planting his real Eun Ha as wife of his rival. By the previous drugging of MW and the false memories planted by evil doctor, it seems that SH had long planned to have MW declared mentally ill. With the real Eun Ha as well to add credence to this by false testimonies or by ensuring MW remained drugged, SH may have envisioned getting all of MW's control and even shares of the company, while keeping Eun Ha's family as backers and maybe ultimately getting the father-in-law out of the company as well.

There is much to love about this episode, especially our OTP togetherness where despite having to keep secrets and holding back physically, they are still so able to project that they care about each other. There was so much more eye contact this time and so much more trust.

I melted when MW gave JS the keys to the car and only said for her to tell him where she went when she was ready to. I wished that she had been able at that time to thank him warmly instead of just giving him an embarrassed nod and walking off.

And one quick inadvertently funny moment - did anyone notice that Seok Hoon at the hospital peeled the apple quite nicely and was pleased with it and tried to show it off but Min Woo did not even notice? Seok Hoon was a little disappointed as he put the apple aside LOL!

And on apparel, I wanted to say... I love that skirt JS wore in the beginning of the show. Creates a lovely line. So feminine! :D

Yes...yes...I just looooveeeeee this episode. And I agree with your comments and LollyPip. JS (or EH) is main player (or puppet in this case) to achieve HS goal, being powerful and rich. Sure there is flaw in this show but I satisfied with the sweet loveliness between the OTP and don't forget about MW and CS bromance, soooo cute..!

Question about editing: Did I get the subs right or is there something messed up in the editing? Seok Hoon was getting Ji Sook to put the book into Min Woo's room and at that time he said several things including that Min Woo went into the pool etc and it showed he was mentally ill. But at the time of this scene, Min Woo had not yet walked into the pool. Did anyone catch that?

Yess! I thought it was odd because she had a flash back near the end of the episode right? Where SH told her about MW's illness, and then there were scenes of the pool. Maybe time issue made things get sloppy?

Yes, there are plenty of plot holes with this script. Why hasn't Ji Sook wondered who her (or rather Eun Ha's) lover is? The fact that this so-called lover has never contacted her since the switch should have her wondering if brother-in-law was the lover, as he was the only one at that time that knew the real Eun Ha was dead and therefore no longer able to continue the affair.

The writer's formula seems to be = 5 minutes of cute OTP moments followed by another 20 minutes of Evil Suk Hoon works his plan and/or other obstacles along the way.. rinse, repeat...

Anyway, even just 5 minutes, I'll take it because our OTP deserves each other and there's no other person that could break their trust and genuine affection towards each other. Not even Evil Suk Hoon..
(yes I watch this drama for the OTP and JJH only)

I was so desperate to see this episode, I put my phone on mute at work and just read the subs for the whole thing lol

The more I see MW open up to JS I just ached, it's like watching this boy give and give and she's only slowly reciprocating, but all the cuteness later on made up for it. Damn you SH for interrupting that adorable moment between the otp in the hospital!

I love Soo Ae's acting when she does the tearful scenes, really moving especially seeing Ji Hyuk again. I couldn't quite see the love from

Did anyone notice how Minwoo kinda zones out a little whenever he's with Seok Hoon? Like when he was being investigated and SH barged in, I felt like Minwoo just zoned out with this expression of "here we go again", or kinda like he's seen this scene repeat before him again, or is it the look of boredom? I'm not quite sure how to describe the look, but he seemed the same when they were both talking as SH peels the apple. Maybe it's the mention about taking him to the psychiatric hospital that makes him look zoned out?

When MW told himself he wasn't weak before jumping into the pool that really hit the spot with me in recreating a childlike feel. Reminds me of when I get told off, and sometimes I repeat things to myself to make sure they are true.

I hope JS realizes how fragile MW's position in the family is, and if anything they both need to help each other to stay sane in this family.

Thanks for the recap!

Yup, I was wanting to shake her into showing more warmth and affection for that poor man whose so hungry for love. And to do it quick before SH shows up again!!!

"Did anyone notice how Minwoo kinda zones out a little whenever he’s with Seok Hoon? Like when he was being investigated and SH barged in, I felt like Minwoo just zoned out with this expression of “here we go again”, or kinda like he’s seen this scene repeat before him again, or is it the look of boredom? I’m not quite sure how to describe the look, but he seemed the same when they were both talking as SH peels the apple. Maybe it’s the mention about taking him to the psychiatric hospital that makes him look zoned out?"

Hmmm... I was under the impression that the camera work was giving us that 'zone out' effect, meaning that we are meant to notice it. So I was thinking that he might have been drugged already and that it took greater effect on him when he was stressed. It's just that he was not shown to be drugged yet in the Ep 9, but definitely in Ep 10, he was... it might have been a continual thing done to him but did not show up, until something triggered it like fear or stress (my wild guess!).

Glad I'm not the only one who's going hardcore for this show haha

I thought it was weird if it was the side effects of drugs because he hasn't been taking any has he? Hmm none that I could remember, or do you mean by hospital drugs?

The fact about stress I totally agree. His emotional well being is fragile and easily damaged. But I'm hoping the love from JS will make him stronger!

@ Nessie
There's been a bit of disconnect with the drugging in the earlier episodes. He was shown to have gone through the pantry of water bottles to get one from behind so that it would be least likely tampered with. After that, we saw no more times when pills were put into his drinks. Suddenly he gets woozy in Ep 9, and I remembered that he used to be drugged. In Ep 10, we see that it is being done again to his water. So I felt that it could have been that there was always some drugging going on, but it may not have always taken effect or been shown to us.

This begs the question though of why, if he suspected (correctly) that he was being drugged before, he did not get all the water analysed and take measures to only drink water he buys himself. He should also now be familiar with the effect of drugging and stop eating and drinking things from his home.

A plot hole that I guess does not detract from my love for the show, but a plot hole nevertheless. :)

I too is thinking of dropping the drama...I don't get the brother insisting that she come back when her life is not any better and they are all under the loan sharks....I mean I get family wanting to be together...but when you are under the thump of the loan shark and possibly force into killing someone...I think it would make more sense just leave her be for least now and get the act together...before forcing her to choose the family...plus I feel like if you look at from his perspective he does not know she is unhappy... other than missing the family...

In the previous episode I think and maybe even in this one, there were a couple of times I felt that Ji Sook and Min Woo were strangely wearing outdoor clothes to bed. But I agree Mi Yeon has lovely bed wear (well she wants her husband's attention and attentions). And Seok Hoon has de rigueur pajamas!!!

And I guess there is the PPL for the shoes and clothes because they're appearing and noticeable at times - I'm noticing poor Soo Ae running around in high heels!!! It does hurt after a while! :)

About Min Woo's suits... why is it that he's the only one wearing such limp looking suits? They don't look crisp and sharp like everyone elses' suits.

My guess - I think it's deliberate to make him look less 'efficient', more in need of care, or something like that. And that pink suit was really not the thing. I hope the wardrobe department will give him better looking clothes. We know he'll be able to carry them off well from his ... aahhh... shower scene. :)

0

@Growingbeautifully Well, I really wasn't bothered by his pink suit. But I will say that the designer is taking some bold chances. He's usually in some bright suits. Perhaps he's dressed that way to illustrate his disposition? He wants to be warm and caring.

0

@ Growingbeautifully

Mi Yeon's dress choices are always really nice and fitting of her image for work, like even the red baby top and pants ughhh to die for. I loved how she didn't look childish and really pulled it off.

@Camille W
Totally agree on his suits. Like if we look at SH his suits are always spot on nice and clear cut, whereas MW's seem a bit off sometimes. I also love how they change JS's hair styles several times so it's not always the same teehe.

Oh God SH why do you have to ruin our OTP moment??!!! You should be locked up and not our Minwoo...Gahhh I can't recall being so addicted to a show since Pinocchio. Just loved, loved the hospital scene and I felt that Seok Hoon was quite put out when they were bickering over the 'spit' LOL! He had double reason for interrupting, 1) to give JS a chance to open MW's locked room and 2) to separate the husband and wife.

I wanted to slam the door in Seok Hoon's face and lock him out LOLOL!

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

I really enjoyed the scenes with our OTP, from simple moments like having a meal and taking a walk, to the scenes where MW shows unconditional trust in JS and the hospital bickering. XD I love that they're growing closer and JS is slowly opening up to MW, asking for his help, being concerned about him, standing up for him, etc. And MW's love is really striking my heart. I love that when he recalled his sweet moments with his mom, the memories were intertwined with his sweet moments with JS. I hope to see more sweet and funny scenes from the couple.

SH is just crazy... He's so intent on controlling JS and achieving his goal of money and power. Nothing and no one can get in his way. I hope JS will continue to fight back and stand on her principles as she realizes that only MW can truly be on her side and SH will ultimately not be able to help her because he keeps threatening her with her loved ones.

I don't think SH wants money and power. If he wanted that, he could have had them by now simply by doing the exact opposite of what he has been doing since episode 1.

If we simply go by his actions, all he seems to want is MW and JS to be happy together and watch them having steaming sex through the various hidden cameras in their room. That's the only way to explain his actions so far.

Required fields are marked *

LOL I think all that secret surveillance just comes back to bite him since what he sees tends to anger him. Poor laptop that got destroyed in a previous ep.

As for money and power, that's not what he really wants, but what he needs to be the supposed superhero who changes the world. Because he learned firsthand how helpless it was for his dad, he realized he needed power to carry out his plan. And he's now on this blind mission to put people in their place. It's not the money and power as end goal, but as a means... He's gotta be paying people to do his dirty work such as that shady prosecutor, the doctor, the maid and Scar assistant, and then threatening JS and trying to control her, etc. But really, he's just in his own delusional world and JS will be his Achilles heel. Gotta admit he's quite crafty in his plans so far though. Will comment more about this when ep. 10 recap is up. =)

He's been crafty, but mostly in sabotaging his own plans so far.

Then again, when you don't face any opposition because people keep ignoring your villain speeches and don't take you seriously, what are you going to do? Just succeed? That would be lame. If others are not interfering with your plans, you have to do it yourself.

Haha!! That's true. I think he keeps getting derailed because he can't calculate the JS factor; hence, his plans are always being thrown off. And it's actually surprising that he hasn't realized this yet. He's still stuck in the "I will threaten your family to get you to be my puppet" mode. I guess it'd be no fun if he tastes success to easily and readily. XD

0

LOL! I was just reading that the rule of drama is that if things are too conflict-free then something must be introduced to create conflict, or you lose your audience. Since Ji Sook is not offering much resistance, Seok Hoon has to take it upon himself to rile her up so that she'll do something to retaliate. He needs to have some push-pull with her too or lose his popularity! :D

0

@ Jon.G
LOL!!!!!!!!! *claps* cameras are too much I should say. I just screamed WTF in previous episode, when SH was watching that EH poured his Herbal tea in sink, the camera scrolled down from her face to hand to the glass in a perfect angle. That was supposed to be a cctv footage right???

I think we have to suspend our belief to some extent. =P Just like how the camera is conveniently capturing JS in the closet when tossing those clothes. Speaking of which, why hasn't JS done some snooping around to see if she can spot those cameras and get rid of them? Cuz it's futile and SH will just find a way to install all of them back? I do hope she would tell MW about the hidden cameras and SH's intentions to bring him down. I wanna see the OTP teaming up, and heck, even MY to join them as allies since she does seem to have some concern for her younger bro.

I have zero problem with suspending my disbelief when it comes to the hidden cameramen (sorry: hidden camerapersons).

There are so many central issues that are so unbelievably contrived I don't waste any effort on them.

I've been thinking and hoping that not only Mi Yeon but Ji Hyuk too should join the team. And let's not forget Chang Soo who now has an empty bank account!!! :)

0

I agree abt the cameras. Shouldn't JS be more concerned abt removing those? But then since SH is so almighty, I doubt that wud be effective anyway. Afterall, JS did try to look for some cameras when she realized he'd been the one responsible for sending the maids to help her pick up her clothes in ep 4/5.

Now im wondering smthg. How did he even get all those cameras into the room w/o raising suspicion anyway?! I mean I knw he's the all-seeing baddie but its a bit farfetched. I'm gonna just suspend disbelief. These things are too small to get me down. Im enjoying the show anyway.

Thank you for the recaps!

I still love Mask..yay!

I think that this week's episodes are the transitionary ones especially because we're halfway through the drama and the next half will be more serious as the battle to bring Seok Hoon down is now starting. And for that to happen, the three (Min Woo, Ji Sook and Mi Yeon) needs to help each other because our villain is a one smart cookie.

I just love this show so much. I did always say that JS cared for hubby MW. Its just that both of them love differently. JS seems like the type who cares for ppl quietly. If she had a crush on someone, she'd probably be very shy abt it, leaving love letters and doing the little things. She's not as intense as MW but it doesn't mean that her emotions don't run deep. JS loves in a very tender and understated way. That probably drew MW to her. She is naturally warm and loving. She has that mother bear vibe to her.

Min Woo on the other hand can't tell the last time someone genuinely loved him and took care of him. And he tried to keep her at a distance in ep 4 and by ep 5 he had fallen more than he knew. (Seriously, go watch ep 4 & 5 again for those who can't get how MW fell so quickly for JS). He is so starved for an emotional connection with someone that when JS comes, she just blasts through his walls unexpectedly. He trusts her bc there's something abt her that feels honest. When she looks at him, he sees her true feeling and he knws he can trust her. She tries to be honest with him as much as possible too. She told him she had secrets. She was always upfront abt hw complicated things were for her. He gets that. And it is MW's unflinching trust in JS that makes her fall for him time and time again. I'd even say that she's baffled by his trust in her. We see her reaction in ep 9 at the beginning and even when she asks him for cash. And that trust will help her to stand up for her hubby. Since the ppl she loves are so important to her, JS is the type who is strengthened by those ppl. especially when she knows they're behind her.

That's why I keep rooting for JS even though I know some people think she's taking so long to get her act together and just own the impersonation of EH. It's JS's heart for her loved ones that will strengthen her and drive her into action. So far it's been her family, but as she spends more and more time with MW, she realizes that he is also worth protecting. I think she's aware of MW's unwavering trust in her and how he truly is concerned about her. And probably somewhere deep inside, she really wants to be completely honest with him and open up her heart. Look at how long it took for JS to finally admit to JH that she's really his noona. I think it won't be long till JS tells MW the truth.

I like what MW said to MY about being able to look into JS's eyes and see his reflection as a gauge for her honesty. And JS definitely has that honest vibe about her. So, MW needs to trust his instincts and not to start doubting JS.

I actually find that part of her ridiculous.

JS gets cosy with MW.
Villain: "Bring down MW or I will kill your parents/put your brother in jail/kill you."
JS: "Oh no, not my family! I will do it!"
JS walks off and again gets cosy with MW.
Villain: "I told you to bring MW down! Now I will (empty threat #32)!"
JS: "Oh no, not my family (again)! I will do it."
JS walks off and gets cosy with MW. Again.
Villain: "Do I have to remind you that I will do horrible things to your family if you don't do something NOW?"
JS: "Yes, you have to remind me because apparently I have the attention span of a drosophila fly."
JS walks off and gets cosy with MW.

If I could give a few thumbs up for your comment @Jon G I would do so. This sums up the exact reason that I find the (projected) crisis in JS's life to be tad stupid. SH never really does anything that truly is threatening!
I fail to understand why SH never carries out any of his threats in the face of JS's defiance/ inaction. So SH being paralyzed with fear does not convince me.

So all in all JS could happily romance MW and tell him everything. Or wait.....she may secretly like some angst in her life.

I don't dislike the drama I would just like more sense to be had behind everyone's action/ inaction.

Hahaha! Your comments always make me LOL. When you break it down that way, it does seem like SH isn't really all that threatening. I don't know if he tolerates what she does because he needs her as a pawn in his plan. And then with his own jealousy mixed in, he doesn't seem to realize he actually hasn't been all that hard on her despite threatening his family. Anyway, no complaints about JS-MW cozy times. XD I like those scenes and then seeing SH seething. XD

Wait, Seok-hoon was supposed to be sane (or even just remotely reasonable) until now?

But you have to give it to him, his plan is as flawless as it is efficient:

Somebody kills Eun-ha (possibly even Seok-hoon himself). He plants a false memory into Min-woo's mind about Min-woo trying to strangle Eun-ha. He simply could expose that Eun-ha is dead and Min-woo murdered her at this point, but he wants more, so he goes out of his way to force Ji-sook into taking over Eun-ha's identity.

Now he has the perfect agent to bring down Min-woo. Except of course that Ji-sook never does what he demands of her, which is not a huge surprise considering he never actually tells her what she is supposed to do in the first place. And that, without Ji-sook being there at all, Min-woo would have been arrested and imprisoned for murder by now.

To keep this valuable and perfectly efficient agent, Seok-hoon has to protect the secret of the switching, of course. That means he has to kill people once in a while, but it's worth it, because he can bring down Min-woo as long as he somehow finds a way to make Ji-sook do something useful for him.
He could simply kill Min-woo, of course, very easily and without any hints of suspicion on himself, considering that Min-woo completely relies on him and has yet to react to the huge neon "I'm a campy black-hat villain" sign that hovers above Seok-hoon.
But that would interfere with his plan of, erm, changing the world after he replaces Min-woo. No, actually, that would still work out just as well.

Required fields are marked *

I am more and more convinced that the one who killed Eun-ha is Seok-hoon. Maybe he didn't plan on her dying. But he schemed something and poisoned her drink. He's got those maids on his payroll after all. And he's the only one in that family ballsy enough to pull it off. Mi Yeon doesn’t hate her brother, and she and dad have no motive. Step mom is just waiting for Min-woo to mess up so she can gloat but won't lift a finger to make it happen.

Why Seok hoon doesn't just kill off Min-woo is anybody's guess. He could certainly do so, but we won't have a drama otherwise. And who can expect logic when dealing with the insane?

The ratings aren't 'falling down' in any drastic movement and I don't think being 9-10% is any bad but I still wish the writing can improve so they can score higher ratings. With a stellar cast like this and solid performances, the writing should be on par as well. Lately, the writing is slacking off and the small decrease in ratings is a warning (the way I see it). The writer needs to amp up his/her game.

Soo Ae is such a good actress! I can see the difference between Eun Ha and Ji-sook just by body language alone. That scene where Ji-sook faces a pseudo Eun-ha gives me goosebumps. Eun Ha's posture has all the haughtiness and pride of her upbringing, while Ji-sook's posture is more humble, more servile.

I've read complaints about how Ji-sook doesn’t pretend enough to be Eun-ha especially to avoid people she doesn't want to recognize her, like the dead Kim Jung-tae, those goons or even her brother. But I don't think Ji-sook wants to be anybody but herself, that's why she never saw a reason to pretend to be who she isn't. Being Eun-ha was never her plan, she got thrust into this situation against her will and is being constantly threatened and intimidated by a madman. If she had schemed to be Eun-ha, or if she had even been a willing participant, her actions would certainly be different.

Of all the couples that are currently showing in the present kdramas, I am personally most vested in Ji-sook and Min-woo and that's saying something, as this is not even a rom com! But they have this quality about them, this je ne sais quois , I can't put finger on it, but it is there . Maybe because the glimpses we have of this couple just having fun and being themselves is so charming and fleeting; maybe it's Min-woo’s willingness to love and trust Ji-sook despite all the odds stacked against them and evidence telling him not to, maybe because it's clear to see she's falling for him too.... whatever it is, I'm rooting hard for this couple to make it and stand together with no lies or secrets between them.

From the very start even and now more so than ever since there is the undercurrent of passion in their fleeting interactions. :)

@Adal +1000000000. I agree. They're a really endearing pair. They look so good together. Too bad I can't ship Jun ji Hoon since he's already taken. But boy, wud that be nice. I really like this otp.

I really wouldn't want JS to play EH when I think abt it too. She wouldn't be true to herself. And I think it would put more distance between the otp if she tried to act as someone she isn't. There would be so much that wouldn't happen if she acted more as EH. But on the flip side she'd probably be able to stop some other things if she acted as EH. But im glad she is staying true to herself bc when MW finds out abt her secrets he'll be more able to trust her. He can't say she was totally conning him if she nvr truly tried to pose as Seo Eun Ha.

Likewise, I'm rooting hard for them too. Totally agree that Min-Woo & Ji-Sook are an endearing pair with a je ne sais quoi quality about them.

It just hit me that in Ju Ji-hoon's role in Mask is sort of reverse of what he had in Goong.

I mean in Goong, he was playing the aloof husband, going out with Hyo rin (ballerina girl) while Yoon Eun-hye pined for him at home.

Now Min woo is in love with Ji sook, yet to him it appears she is in interested in all the guys except him.

Just a thought from an addicted fan! :)

I can watch Minwoo & Jisook bicker all day, they are just so cute. Why did SH have to interrupt their hospital scene? Whyyyy??? I still love you Mask!

Thank you LollyPip for the recap. Can't wait for epi 10 recap. ^^

Im going to go back and watch ep 1-3 again. There might be some clues abt EH's death there. Plus I want to see Soo Ae playing badass Eun Ha. I miss her.

When Ji Sook appeared in Min Woo's dream (where his mother is in), I think MW won't be envious with Ji Sook anymore, because, now, he has someone he cares enough about to cry for.

I can't help comparing Secret and Mask - both of which were written by the same PD and scripwriters. Secret is way more melodramatic i must say - in the heartwrenching/ sob buckets way whereas Mask plumbs the depths of human deception in a detached and cool manner. The characters in Secret were more 3 dimensional whereas the usual cardboard characters are used in Mask - the cold Chaebol father, scheming stepmother, unscrupulous money lender (with hilarious wig), unlucky and weak gambler father etc. I like that Secret was done in a tight and steady manner - there were not many characters but each were mostly fleshed out quite thoroughly - something which i have yet to observe in Mask. Even the leads in Mask seem to be sleepwalking through each episode. Whereas those in Mask had very good chemisty - Ji Sung, Hwang Jeung-eum and Bae Soo Bin. sure hope Mask will pick up the pace soon! fighting, Soo Ae and Ju Ji hoon !
