First script read for youth historical drama Ruler–Master of the Mask

I can’t get over this amazing pairing: Yoo Seung-ho (Remember–Son’s War) and Kim So-hyun (The Lonely Shining Goblin, Bring It On, Ghost) are starring in MBC’s upcoming sageuk Ruler–Master of the Mask. Recently, the show held its first script read with the main cast members including L (The Time I’ve Loved You) and Yoon So-hee (Memory).

The main premise of this drama is the political conflict between the corrupt nobles who want to privatize the water supply and Crown Prince Yi Sun, played by Yoo Seung-ho, who wants to keep it free for his citizens. I wonder if the actor ever had a meta LOL moment because his last film, Kim Seon-dal, was about this exact issue, except he was the one claiming (fake) ownership of the river then.

Kim So-hyun initially starts out with a strong hatred toward the young prince and a desire to avenge her father’s death, but eventually falls in love with him instead. Yoon So-hee plays the other woman who loves him, but there’s a similar Romeo-Juliet dynamic in their relationship because her grandfather, played by Heo Joon-ho (Beautiful Mind), is the leader of the corrupt organization and the crown prince’s main enemy.

Reportedly, the ever funny character actor Park Chul-min (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds), who plays the prince’s mentor, was also at the script reading cracking hilarious jokes and ad-libbing from day one. I don’t really know how L is going to fit into this water business; his character is the commoner counterpart to the prince with the same name, who masquerades as him sometimes.

But I almost don’t care because I’m so excited about the main pairing between Yoo Seung-ho and Kim So-hyun. Since they’re both long-time child actors burgeoning into adult roles, I keep thinking that they must have worked together before. However, it looks like the single drama with their names listed together is I Miss You, and even then, they didn’t really have screen time together because she was only in the youth scenes. So I’m looking forward to their chemistry in Ruler–Master of the Mask.

Ruler–Master of the Mask will be broadcast on Wednesday-Thursday in May on MBC.

Sometimes I find KSH is super pretty, when she dress up and in magazines. But sometimes in candid picture, she doesnt look as pretty as in magazine, maybe its her smile? I mean her beauty changes from time to time, I cant really put finger on it. (to be clear like song hye kyo, she looks beautiful no matter what, when, where, ksh is pretty depends on camera, the make up really look good on her)

YSH has such dreamy eyes.

I agree... she looked sooo pretty as the queen in Goblin, it took me a few seconds to recognize her in the first pic here.

Or maybe her beauty is presented differently in modern and sageuk looks.

Hmmm... she has pretty candid pictures too. But I think her charm is actually in motion. I am a huge fan of her, but I admit that sometimes she looks stiff in pictures. I also agree that she looks different here. Maybe because she started to show her forehead more? And also, she got her wisdom tooth extracted. So it kind of subtly changed the way she smiles.

But in motion, she looks gorgeous no matter what, when and where. That's what drew me in to her.

I was watching running man KSH episode, I dont find her super pretty in that episode like she is in instalgram picture. I was a bit suprised at the close up.

Sometimes people in drama is different from real life, because they know how to play with camera angle. As people compare ksh to son ye jin - who is top beauty in korea so i was curious

Then it's just a matter of perspectives then. I find her pretty in that episode, even with her swollen cheek.

KSH has a super pretty image in magazine/instalgram/award show... so in the show she is pretty but isnt super pretty as her image.

It kinda sometimes some actors has a really manly image in the drama but in real life they are quite feminine.

being an actor, how the character is more important. I just say seeing her in candid she is pretty but isnt super pretty as I thought she was. But she has a type of face look really good with make up, her look can change a lot with make up.

KSH is very active on instagram. When I first know about her I was like wow wow wow every picture look perfect. So I research more about her.

KSH has her wisdom teeth taken out before filming running man. I don't think it's hair to judge her looks when she had swollen cheecks from getting her teeth pulled out.

hmm, can you show me the article that says "she had her wisdom teeth taken", cause what I know was that Kim Yoo Jung had her wisdom teeth taken when she had her BILY promotion "non-stop" ultimately led her to get sicker, and targeted by "anti's". I love both of them, but pls get your facts straight, just to justified the image of an actor/actress.

0

@carl ming Fun fact: Kim Sohyun got her wisdom tooth taken way before Yoojung. During her Allet's Let's Share a Heart Campaign video, her cheek was already swollen. It was on the third week of November. When did Yoojung get her wisdom tooth taken? If I remember correctly, it was December. There weren't articles about it, but her Korean fans know. It wasn't in the headlines and it doesn't matter.

I honestly don't know why you had to bring Yoojung up when she isn't mentioned in this specific thread. If you're gonna argue about beauty justification, please don't bring other people up.

She's the type who's beautiful in motion. she looked like a goddess in Goblin. even son ye jin, her look alike looks weird in photos sometimes. And with KSH I also think it has a lot to do with the weird make up they put on her. she looks best in natural makeup because her features are already strong. So sometimes they put on heavy makeup on her that doesn't suit her.

i think she looks prettier in candids tho. for example in the first pic of this article she looks the prettiest she's ever looked to me.

Is she 18 yet? Like 17.

IDK. I won't dwell on it too much. ;)

This plot sounds a bit too convoluted to me. I don't know what to think

Why aren't people here kicking up a fuss about the age gap like for Park Bo Gum and Kim Yoo Jung in Moonlight? YSH and KSH have the same age gap and she is also underaged. I'm assuming they won't kiss in this after the fuss caused by PBG and KYJ's kisses.

They are, but KSH is now a legal adult in Korea (she's 18/19 by the way they do age? I don't know, I'm Korean and I cna't figure it out lmao) so there's not as much upset.

I think it's because KSH has been paired a few times with actors older than her way back, that people won't bother anymore, like with taecyeon which is 11 yrs older than her, a lot of folks reacted to that, but in time was accepted due to their chemistry plus it's aired in a cable channel, while KYJ was a first timer in that particular pairing plus a kissing scene and is broadcast in a national tv. Well of course it's also because KSH is considered 18 this year.

I guess it is unfair but KYJ really did look like PBG's little sister . KSH looks mature and the same age as YSH

pretty sure there were tons of people who didn't kick up a fuss in Moonlight. the ratings were super high and it's a well loved drama on this site, so... not like everyone was criticizing it. i imagine the same people who criticized Moonlight for the underage stuff are also criticizing this one, even if not in comments yet.

Yoo Seung-ho and Kim So-hyun are probably my most favorite child actors from each gender. They are such capable, versatile and amazing actors so I'm beyond excited for this pairing.

I have such high expectations and secretly, I'm hoping they focus on the love story. Revenge turns love is my favorite sageuk trope and I hope it'll be as deep and intense as something like The Princess' Man. The whole revenge angle reminded me of the drama slightly although of course the whole water business is a completely different scenario.

I hope so too, and I wish they don't won't turn it to a cheesy love plot for teens, fingers cross for a moving heartbreaking romance, I'm prepared to cry for angsty scenes delivered by these two.

Hope it is serious plot coz actors are experienced actor. Moonlight wasnt my cup of tea. Too little plot and yoojung wore that green outfit entire the drama.

So am I, Moonlight did'nt leave a mark on me, it's too sweet, what was impactful for me was the goryeo era of goblin, even for short scenes, I feel broken for their tragic love story, which made me love the second love line more.

Me too! I want it to be a heartbreaking love story with plenty of plot twists and directing wise. When it comes to this genre, Yoo Seung Ho ang Kim So Hyun is the best of their age. I cried my eyes out for him and her in that sucking drama Missing You.

I really wish it was a different main actress. I like KSH but idk I really wanted to watch a drama without feeling weird about it. I liked MDBC but sometimes KYJ looked like PBG's little sister. Hopefully it isn't like that in this drama.

A tiny tidbit to share: I watched a BTS of I Miss You, where KSH either finished her scene or came on set for some reason, and YSH was filming his bit.

The director teased KSH saying she should take a picture with YSH so she can show off in front of her classmates. I think she had a crush on him.

YSH happily posed for the picture and after the first one was taken said, "one more, for me." I thought that was so gentlemanly of him, kinda making her feel like she too is important enough to be posing with. (She was still a child star, whereas he had already made a name for himself)

It was actually Yoochun she liked, she'd been open about it for a while by then. Still an adorable anecdote though, and special considering she's spoken about how she was never told she was pretty before I Miss You (because she mainly played negative roles/younger second leads instead of younger leads).

Also it's crazy to think Yoo Seung-ho (19 at the time) was actually closer in age to the child actors on that drama, than to the actual leads, Yoochun and Yoon Eun-hye.

I am very excited for this, and for all the sageuks coming out in 2017. However, I believe Yi Sun was also the name of the famous Prince Sado, I hope they're going a fictional history route and not an actual one, where our hero ends up with a less than happy ending. :(

I think Yi San was Sado's son. So we're not looking at a full scale tragedy here, though Yi San later King Jeongjo did die of mysterious circumstances at 48.

It's Yi Sun not Yi San.

Yi Sun was the given name of Crown Prince Sado and King Sukjong.

I'm confused by the romanization. So is drama's crown prince 이순 (Sukjong) or 이선 (Sado)?

I'm guessing it's Prince Sado based on the plot summary.

0

Required fields are marked *

ok. so then full scale tragedy after all. Unless the writers go the MDBC way and just change history.

I don't know why they'd choose Sado when his story has been done to death and there are so many great crown princes/kings in Korea whose story hasn't been told yet.

It might be a fictionalized Yi Sun too. This is based more on conflicts over control of the water supply. I doubt it's going to focus on their family feud.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

They'll prolly have fake Yi Sun (L) die in the rice chest and have the crown prince run off into the sunset with Kim So-hyun if they're aiming for a happy-ish ending.

The premise isn't my type, but I hope the leads bring warmth and sweetness to this drama. We've had a Sado series and a movie in the last three years. This drama must set itself apart.

You sounds like you know her in real life LOL. And this article is ab the drama not ab KSH's personality :) In my opinion, KSH is well-mannered and mature for her age but if you know more ab her, she's just like other teen girls ^^ She seems like that type of person who is shy and not easily befriend with anyone but when you get to know her, she's warm and sweet too ^^

Manse, manse, manse for Park Chul-min! I loved his performances in GU AM HEO JOON and THE RETURN OF ILJIMAE. Heo Joon-ho was terrific in BEAUTIFUL MIND (and now I really have to watch him in JUMONG). Add sageuk veteran Kim Roe-ha (KING'S DAUGHTER, SU BAEK-HYANG; ILJIMAE; SHINE OR GO CRAZY) to the mix, and I'd be an even happier camper.

Guess they had never watched someone as young carry a show on her youthful shoulders, yes I am talking to you School 2015, you can tell that someone is talented when she can portray two roles in one drama and still know the differences despite having the other one act as the other.
