News bites: January 14, 2017

Seo Kang-joon

  • A drama adaptation of the popular Daum webtoon From A Distance, A Green Spring has been confirmed, and Seo Kang-joon (Entourage) is considering the lead part. The source material is about twenty-year-olds who are in between youth and adulthood, and Seo’s protagonist is a college junior. He’s a good-looking guy from a first-class family who appears perfect on the outside, but who’s hiding pain on the inside. The drama hasn’t been picked up by a broadcaster yet, but producers are angling for a spot in May. [Osen, Sports Today]
  • Yay for Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim! The show recently hit a high of 26.7% in viewership ratings and a reward vacation has been confirmed for the cast. Although stars Han Seok-kyu and Seo Hyun-jin will not be able to attend due to their schedules, the rest of the group will depart for a trip spanning four nights and five days in Cebu, Philippines on January 20. The show wraps next week with a special cameo appearance by Kim Hye-soo. [Sports Chosun]

  • Junsu, Three Colors of Fantasies

  • Speaking of cameos, Junsu (Scent of a Woman) filmed his guest appearance for the premiere episode of Introverted Boss last week. In the show starring Yeon Woo-jin (Divorce Lawyer in Love) as a shy corporate leader and Park Hye-soo (Age of Youth) as a rookie employee who stirs things up within the company, Junsu will play a top star (named Junsu). Introverted Boss debuts on tvN on January 16. [DongA]
  • There’s finally a schedule in place for Three Colors of Fantasies, the experimental trilogy of mini dramas that was a joint project between MBC and Naver. Each mini drama, grouped by color, will contain three episodes. The first, Star of the Universe, is a “white” and pure romance between a reaper named Byul (played by Suho) and a top star named Woo-joo (played by Ji-woo) which airs January 26. Romance Full of Life, a “green” romance set in the Noryangjin academy district, follows, and Yoon Shi-yoon (Mirror of the Witch) and Jo Soo-hyang (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju) are coupled up beginning February 16. Finally, Queen of the Ring, a “gold” fantasy starring Kim Seul-gi as the possessor of a mysterious ring and Ahn Hyo-seob as a guy who falls for her, will begin March 9. Each episode will also be available on Naver after its broadcast. [Xports News]

  • Rain, Lee Beom-soo, Ohn Joo-wan

  • Lee Beom-soo (Last) will produce and act in the upcoming film Uhm Bok-dong. It’ll be the first film produced by his agency, and the movie will highlight the life of the titular cyclist. Uhm was known for his cycling prowess and his fearlessness during the days of Japanese occupation—he would often compete and win against Japanese racers. Lee will take on the role of Uhm’s coach, while Rain (Come Back, Ajusshi) is considering the role of Uhm. Filming will begin in the next few months and producers are targeting a release before the end of the year. [DongA]
  • He received rave reviews for his performance in last year’s Newsies, and Ohn Joo-wan (Beautiful Gong Shim) is set to return to the stage for a second time. He’s been cast as the famous occupation-era Yoon Dong-ju (Kang Haneul played him in a feature film last year) in the play Yoon Dong-ju, Shoot the Moon, which has been a popular theatrical production since its debut in 2012. Every seat sold out during last year’s run, and with this year being the 100th anniversary of the poet’s birth, seats are expected to fill fast. Joining Ohn in the play is Park Young-soo, who has played Dong-ju in prior productions. Yoon Dong-ju, Shoot the Moon hits the stage between March 21 and April 2 at Seoul Arts Center’s CJ Towol Theater. [Osen]
  • The weekend drama Blow Breeze has been extended by three episodes, which will bring the total episode count to 53. The show starring Im Ji-yeon and Sohn Ho-joon has recently garnered ratings as high as 18% and will now air its finale on February 26. [Xports News]

  • Yoon Yeo-jung, Jung Yumi, Ahn Jae-hong

  • Love this cast and am already looking forward to this: Yoon Yeo-jung (Dear My Friends), Jung Yumi (Train to Busan, Discovery of Romance) and Ahn Jae-hong (Answer Me 1988) quietly wrapped filming on Wild Greens Maiden late last year. A source close to the fantasy film described the movie as being similar to a fairy tale, and as a short, but meaningful and joyful project. Yoon stars as spinster who travels from an unknown faraway forest to land on Earth in search of a partner. Jung co-stars as a woman who lives in a remote mountain village tending to wild greens, believing “a man will appear” without effort on her part. Ahn will come to the mountains to bathe and will fall for Jung’s character, so it seems she was right. Wild Greens Maiden is expected to make the rounds at film festivals beginning in September. [Joongang]
  • The cast and crew of Perfect Wife gathered together for their first script read, and stars Go So-young (in her first role in ten years), Yoon Sang-hyun (Shopping King Louis), Jo Yeo-jung (Babysiter), Sung Joon (Madame Antoine), Im Se-mi (Shopping King Louis) and more exchanged new year’s greetings and wrote aegyo-filled notes to viewers. Go is the go-getting housewife, Yoon plays her shrinking husband (who shrinks even more in front of his boss), and the ajumma-mystery-comic (literally how it is described in the press) airs after Hwarang on February 26 on KBS. [Osen]

i really don't understand why this boring guy keeps on landing lead roles. He was the black hole in Entourage. Him and Jin Se Yeon always puzzled me whenever I see their names on headlines. People criticised their acting left and right, but how, how in the world they keep on getting casted? Anyway, Seo Kang Joon, good luck.

You're probably thinking of Sung Joon...

Anyway SKJ has actually become a pretty good actor, he's just in the same boat as Kim Go Eun where some ppl hate them unfairly because they think they did wrong to their precious PHJ. Who was probably the actual cause of all the drama back then, but whatever... #unpopularopinion cause ppl here seem to worship him for some reason.

Required fields are marked *

Mate, PHJ was in no way responsible for the CITT debacle... and neither were any of the other actors, SKJ included. It was the fault of the higher ups and those in control of the drama, not those involved in bringing it together. I'm not saying that PHJ didn't somewhat take advantage of the situation, but considering the fact that he was so screwed over by the drama, he made lemonade out of lemons, and that's not something to criticise

Required fields are marked *

WHAT?!?!??? 'This is honestly the most ridiculous comment here. Yes, it's #unpopularopinion because it's 100% wrong. To compare Seo Kang Joon as being on the same boat as Kim Go Eun?!?!? Lolololololol

Let's see, one is currently in the most popular show, killing it with her acting skills while the other.....killed another show.

I was obsessed with Cheese (still love that hateful show) and it did not go down like that at all!

Wow. Seo Kang Joon same as Kim Go Eun?? thanks for the laughs lol

Required fields are marked *

Kim Go Eun gets needless hate perhaps even more than Seo Kang Joon, since those vile netizens actually nag her on her looks and all. I also personally think, her fan cafe made it worse for her instead of helping her during CITT debacle. Still kindly, don't put her on the same boat as Seo Kang Joon, he killed a show recently while the other is killing it in a show like JIGS accurately pointed out. She is a great actress and the whole fiasco wasn't her fault, nor was it Kang Joon's fault. As for PHJ, he got majorly screwed over and he was vocal about it. Did he gain something from it, of course he did. I don't blame him for that as he didn't choose to be sidelined in his own project from male protagonist to a second lead character half way through a drama. He didn't sign up for it so why should he bear it.

Required fields are marked *

Your assessment of what happened is a complete miss. Pretty sure most people who were upset about the CITT fiasco were not angry only because of the screen time issue (although that is part of it because of how it changes the narrative when you kick out the driving part of the show). People were upset because of how the drama was morphed into a mopey, unoriginal. shallow melodrama/makjang.

Not everyone who watches dramas watch due to the actor. Most of us are not die-hard PHJ fans. However, when there is obvious shady business going on, we will call it out. People are free to have the opinion that he should not have spoken out, which I disagree with. But the problem started way before PHJ said anything, so to say that he was the cause of the problem is a lie.

Yes. We were all WTF is happening since episode 8. I think even before the recapper choose to address/pick up on it. It was a weird turn (faults I lay only at the show's decision makers feet). But that said, the rise of this clearly mediocre actor to leading man status can only be attributed to his looks and personally for me, that's enough point for people to note him underserving.

0

I still wince when I think of CITT. I think the whole situation was entirely unfortunate for all the actors and don't specifically blame this young man. I also credit PHJ for speaking out. Often there is a "what happens on the set, stays on the set" mentality, but I think he was within his rights to say something specifically because the writer who convinced him to take the role was apparently quite upset.

0

I've never watched Cheese In The Trap, nor do I care about it.

I have seen Entourage and Cunning Single Lady however. I can comfortably say Seo Kang-joon is a mediocre, if not outright poor, actor with limited range. Comparing him to Kim Go Eun is actually insulting since she's leagues beyond him.

I could just as easily say that the only reason people try to "rate" his acting as anything above mediocre is because they like the way he looks, and want to get in his pants.

I agree with this assessment.

And Kim Go-eun and SKJ are not even remotely comparable in terms of acting skill, she actually got her initial career boost off her acting, while he got it for his looks+a very limited acting range (and an aggressive agency push).

0

Yeah good luck to Seo Kang Joon! He's handsome, seems nice and still young and fresh...
Though he's still green and I actually wants him to gain experience first, by playing 2nd lead roles for example. In Hwajung & Entourage his inexperience exposed. I feel bad for him that he's given the most boring, unrelatable male lead character in the history of kdrama that is Young Bin. I seriously cannot feel anything for him other than to slap him some sense.
While in CITT & SKL since he's only given 2nd lead role, he could act better and more confident. That's why I think it'd better for him to try 2nd lead roles first.

"Popular Daum web drama From A Distance, A Green Spring" should be "popular Daum WEBTOON From A Distance, A Green Spring". It's a webtoon, not a web drama.

The webtoon is decent. There is no romance. It's more about friendship and searching your own identity. It's more of self search journey but with friends. There is alot of bromance in the webtoon though.

Seo Kang-joon is a classic example, of when over promotion back fires. He has good looks, and his early projects gave him good buzz and made him likeable.

He went on the Roommate variety show and he portrayed himself as not so smart - couldn't spell, didn't know things, but he was still likeable, the male equivalent of the ditzy blond trope, so it still worked for him.

He then went on Cheese in the Trap, and finally convinced people that there is some promising talent there. However, someone got the, now, not so genius, idea to turn that vehicle into a starring role for him and it all backfired. Earning him backlash, rumors, and tawdry gossip about his sudden rise.

This was followed by a headlining project - Entourage, that bombed hugely, and though not entirely his fault (poor writing, poor casting, choosing to mimic Hollywood, rather than the SK entertainment industry, etc.), as the lead of the show, the failure did ding him a bit, further heightening the netizen bashing that had been building around him.

He obviously has a good connection with tVn, so if he can get another good project, he can turn it around. This sly image that is attached to him, might not even be his fault, so hopefully his management do a better job of representing him correctly.

That's what I think too.

I read a little of the drama behind the drama before I decided it's not worth my time. I was in neither's camp. My impression was that this guy got caught in the mess without knowing how to deal with it properly or maybe there was just that much he could do.

He had better choose his next project carefully or it'll be even more difficult for him to turn things around.

I am pretty much agreed with most of the comments here. I have seen SKJ in WHITF, Hwajeong and Entourage and from what I have seen; he is not ready for lead actor material yet. Somehow, well this is my personal opinion; he need to build up acting skills more because he is indeed lacks charisma and screen presence to me. He was indeed pretty, but he was pretty darn boring to me. In Entourage, I can barely hold it just because of Eun Gab and Ho Jin alone, despite SKJ being the lead actor because practically he was boring. I hoped his management does know how to pick his future project well, because there are tons of new talents booming in SK nowadays, like Park Bo Gum for example. Peace.

I have seen him in few projects, and only in CITT he did OK, but i do think he was comfortable with his role and knew how to portray it. Most of characters he has played, Hwajeong was the worst.

It's really more important to select likable characters even if they are only 2nd leads.

0

Baek In Ho was not someone who is likeable in my eyes, but for an actor who is limited, choose a lively character probably better, at least can cover some of his weaknessess.

0

I agreed that his acting skills are still limited, therefore he should choose project which can honed his skills first; for example 2nd lead heroes whereby he can learn how to project a lead actor charisma and charms. There is no need for him to rush into lead actor material yet; he is still young and if he do got the talents, people would prefer him even more. Hey even SIG chose an unpopular role after his Yoon Jae famed drama to learn from his sunbaes and look how versatile he has been up until now. Just saying my two cents opinion. Peace.

0

Honestly he's still young, ppl are a bit harsh on him. He's not that bad, in my opinion, I've seen worse.
His management really failed though. I hope he'll get better luck this year and at least learn how to manage his own career. It seems he's just following orders. They obviously want him to become some kind of phenomenon at all cost I guess. This is a pure fail, he will not be truly popular right now. Maybe in 5 years when he builds good experience.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Honestly, the 'he's young' thing doesn't hold much water, especially comparing him to other actors at the same age, and especially other actors in his age group now. I mean, look at Lee Jong-seok, Kim Woo-bin, Kang Ha-neul, Yoo Ah-in, Song Joong-ki, Kim Soo-hyun, Park Bo-gum, Lee Jun-ki, even Ji-soo at the same age..... it's pretty telling.

tbqh it's only because of his agency that he's even got this far, because male actors aren't as likely to get away with being limited-range pretty faces as female ones, and the field is competitive. He's pretty, but as the reactions to his increased screen time/central focus in Cheese/Entourage showed, he just doesn't have what it takes to carry a show.

I haven't read much of the webtoon 'From A Distance, A Green Spring' but generally, it seemed like a good youth story. The characters are well written (especially the older brother of Seo Kang-joon's character) and I think the relationship between Seo Kang-joon's character and his sunbae is one of the best depictions of friendship between guys without edging towards fan service.
I hope Lee Soo-hyuk gets cast as the sunbae character in the drama adaptation of "From A Distance, A Green Spring". He looks so similar to that guy. I wonder who's going to play the older brother to Seo Kang-joon's character. Personally, Lee Ji-hoon from "The Legend of the Blue Sea" seems to be a good fit.

I think not because DB purposely left out the celebs you mentioned, but really there's no news-worthy item about them. And this site is drama-related site, not kpop news site you can go to other sites to read about idols' activities and gossip.
1. Suju members, if there's no news about them cast in drama or movie, why would DB post their news? You may not know but DB also post other idols' news if it's relevant to drama&movie info. Same goes for Jung Yonghwa & 2AM members.
2. Any actor/actress will get same treatment from DB, if and if only there's news-worthy material about them. Yoon Eun Hye has been on hiatus, believe me she has many fans here, but there's no news about her comeback nor potential project. Park Min Young is busy in China I think.
3. Military info.. well.. sometimes DB also post info about actors who enlist/return from enlistment. But that's just about it.

and isnt abt kpop, but they r kpop who runs down to acting too rite? I just a bit left out, since I know espceially SM likes to shove down their artist into our face, (not they not talented! nothing to do with them) ex: Siwon, cyrstal, TVXQ, Seohyun SNSD,etc

but nowadays (okay bside onew in DOTS) i rarely since their face, mostly kpop from other companies runs a lot in my face, AOA, BTS, okay i dont even know their names anymore.

I actually like him, of course purely for his is looks, and then tried to follow his career. I made note to watch Running Man for him when his group was on and I forgot he was here. In Roommatea, he so lack personality that even the funniest gag comedienne couldn't make him look...alive.

Man, what a dud.

Seo Kang-joon isn't terrible, but he is mediocre- it only works out for him when he has a much more skilled costar to cover for his flaws (e.g. Nam Ji-hyun in What's With This Family, or Kim Go-eun in Cheese).

And even then, it's not hard to see why the actual male leads of those dramas were other actors - Park Hyung-shik in WWTF, Park Hae-jin in Cheese.

One more unpopular opinion is that I don't see any brilliance in Kim Go Eun , who is the weak link in Goblin and spoils the show to me, idk if it is a case of lookism from my side, idk if it is her appearance , she looks boring to me, nothing in her face that at least draws me, I have lots of biases in kpop groups who are not conventional beauties but I love them for voice or charismatic feel they have ( like Kihyun from Monsta X), but with Eun Tak I heard people praising her acting but when I am watching Goblin I see nothing exveprional just a boring heroine and actress who can't emote properly, even the scene where Goblin turns to ashes and she cries, I only see actress who shouts as if she is in pain but not actually a girl who lost her lover and is in deep grief
On Seo Kang Jun tho, so far I have seen a good actor who actually does well in all his projects, but as he handsome people just love hating on him, I admit he probably is boring as a person, but he is not as an actor, I feel all the emotions from his character and I loved his acting so far

Seo Kang-joon is a classic example of lookism-fuelled mediocrity - he's pretty but even at his prettiest, he's not interesting enough to hold a screen and his acting basically consists of being able to execute one set of expressions (having seen him in What's With This Family and Cheese, I can say that).

@pogo I agreed with you. Even if I didn't follow all his works, but I have seen him enough to say that this young boy really need to train more, not to keep accepting more lead roles which could backfire his career. Of course his looks did him justice, but such pretty looks didn't work for everybody. Me for example; I traded more for acting rather than looks but if the actors/actresses do have it, then its a wholesome bonus. But this guy my friend, he is definitely lacks lead actor charisma, which he can develop if he give himself more time taking on much smaller roles, learning how to build the precisely emotions needed to emits on the screen. Entourage was his worst and absolute proof. See lots of his fans will back up him back if I were to say this, but there were tons of other talents who could definitely pull off the show. Of course his management was partially to blame, but didn't his also responsible for the direction of his acting career? He was the one who gets the offer and received the script, so he alone must know whether he can pull the act or not, and vice versa. Anyways if he do accept the offer, well good luck guys. Haha.

Well, I see more untelanted actors who get leading roles ( including idols ) so if Seo Kang Jun who is a decent actor and improving is using his chance for lead role I don't mind, I watched him in What happens to my family, Entourage and a movie where he plays a younger man fallen in love with older woman and I liked him in all his roles, hate him all you want but you alwaya are lenient on those like Kim Tae Hee who only has looks and Sung Joon is not a brilliant actor to get all the leads, I saw how people were happy to hate Kang Jun in Entourage tho I liked his role there, Entourage itself was a flop no matter who played that role, I really think people just hate on him cause of Cheese ( I never liked PHJ and his sleazy behaviour didn't add to my opinion of him)
And honestly I am not even Seo Kang Jun's fan, I agree he as a person lacks charisma and his beauty lacks a bit of something, I just think be doesn't deserve all the hate he gets

Are you new to kdrama or what? Kim Tae Hee was really criticised a lot for her acting. I mean a lot to the extent she wanted to quit acting. But in her recent project i. e Yong Pal she was praised a lot for her improvement (actually she already did in My Princess). KTH also not even favourite here, so i wonder where the issue of leniency comes from. As for Sung Joon i dont think ppl is lenient either. Whenever news out for his new project, many peoplw actually doubt about him.

Anyway if you are actually his fan, just say it loudly. No one will eat you alive here.

100% agree. I liked Kim Hyun-joong and fully admit that he can be a candidate for the worst actor in Korea.

I didn't need to prove that he's anywhere near good or "improving" to enjoy him. I mean, it's insult to put him next to anyone with 5% acting skills lol

LOL

LOVE your honesty.

It's ok if you wanna watch an idol. No shame in that. There's no need to defend bad acting just because you enjoy the eye candy.

I too am guilty of that.

I wonder why some people can't admit to that. It's ok if the guy/gal you like isn't a great actor, you don't have to pretend or justify that s/he is. Just enjoy. It is entertainment after all.

I am not his fan , I just don't get when Gyu Hyu Sun and Suzy and her likes get lead roles and Seo Kang Jun who at least can act can't

dude, 2, 3, 4, 5 wrongs don't make a right.

i am not sure how bringing in other (argumentative) undeserving people prove your point. unless that is to agree with the assessment that Seo Kang Jun is terrible but because of his looks why shouldn't he get offers, too. in that case, yes, agree. he's terrible and still gets offer hence, another case of looks>talents :)

i agree with you. The intensity of the hate sounds kinda ridiculous. I'm not a fan either.

@Peeps loved the 'gone forever' and i hope it sticks!

I rarely say this about actors, I usually don't get into the moral outrage about their personal, private lives but Kim Hyun Joong is filth to me!!!

I can't believe how much I was crushing over him after BOF.
