Thwarted kisses and rom-com hijinks in Seven Day Queen

Well this is a 180-degree turn if I’ve ever seen one. The first teaser for KBS’s new Joseon-era romance Seven Day Queen promised tragedy and tears for the royal love triangle, but this newest teaser for the series could not be more different, featuring pratfalls and kissyfaces. Did the show become a rom-com overnight, or are they just trying to lure us in with cuteness? I don’t know, but I can’t say it’s not working.

The drama is about the real-life tragic love story of King Jungjong and Queen Dangyeong, who were torn apart by political enemies, forcing the queen out of the palace after only a week—the shortest reign of any queen in Joseon’s history. Park Min-young (Healer) stars as Dangyeong, and Yeon Woo-jin (Introverted Boss) will play Jungjong. At the start of the story he’ll be a prince who lives a stifled life so as not to threaten his half-brother, tyrant king Yeonsangun, played by Lee Dong-gun (Laurel Tree Tailors). In this story, Yeonsangun will be a powerful king who has everyone under his feet, but will never have the heart of the woman he so ardently loves.

The teaser opens with Park Min-young’s voiceover: “Because I love you, all of the tears in the world came to me along with you.” She sees Yeon Woo-jin smiling at her, arms stretched wide. She breaks into a smile and runs to him in slow motion… and then suddenly trips on a rock and falls flat on her face. The tone goes full-on comedic, as the romantic mood is shattered by her mortifying fall, though Yeon Woo-jin just seems to think it’s adorable.

He takes full advantage of the moment by swooping in for a kiss, only to have Lee Dong-gun literally get in between them like a haughty child. And for added cheekiness, the song in the background goes, “Oppa-ya, I found someone I really like.” Heh. I don’t know that this teaser’s tone is one that we can expect for the drama, since it feels more like a commercial for the show than a preview of what’s to come, but it does make me hope for some happy romantic moments for the couple, because they’re pretty darn cute together.

Seven Day Queen follows Mystery Queen on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning May 31.

Yeon Woo Jin's smile. I'm sold by just the first picture.

Lee Dong Gun really looks regal in that teaser, despite the light tone of the teaser.

Possibly a rom-com in the beginning, and angst later like Love in the Moonlight....

So many sageuks, so many pretty hanboks! *u*
Suspicious Partner is also on W/T... how am I going to keep up with so many dramas on the same days? I need more carbon copies of myself, or a pause button on real life so that I can jump into dramaland.

Thank you for the article, Girlfriday.
I am not seeing lots of people excited about this drama. I know I am, but there are very few followers on Viki channel, for example.
May I suggest that readers who want to see this drama send license request forms to both Viki and DramaFever.

"Unfortunately, it seems those forms are useless, because despite all the popular dramas that fans have requested, Viki seems to lose out on them. The past year really has been terrible on Viki. So many missed opportunities.

At one point it looked like Dramafever was finished, but they managed to get a deal with tvN, which allowed them rights to popular dramas lduring tvN's success period. Then they started getting the big name Chinese dramas, which is surprising, considering Viki's parent company is a major Chinese retailer.

The only thing keeping Viki going were the fansubs, which meant they would release faster than Dramafever and offer more variety, but even that these days is becoming not so true. Viki managed to alienate so many of their subbers, who were working for FREE! And now there are many times that Dramafever releases even ahead of Viki. And now Viki has decided to no longer allow fan channels, and then went further to delete past works, leading to an exodus of subbers who felt their hard work was disrespected - SMH.

If not for the video commenting that sets Viki apart (a truly genius idea), Viki would be in even bigger trouble. They are wasting time and money on projects that haven't been successful. Their self-produced dramas haven't been well received, whereas Dramafever's foray into drama collaboration with Secret Romance, is doing considerably well among international viewers. Viki is now down to re-uploading YouTube style videos, and an overly busy, really confusing homepage that just looks cluttered and not at all visually pleasing.

How they went from being number one across the board, to their current situation, especially when many fans were even boycotting Dramafever at one point, is anyone's guess. Sorry for the rant, just came from searching for Ruler - Master of the Mask on Viki and surprise - they didn't get the license."

Thank goodness! You are speaking my mind right now. I have always hated DramaFever, they have horrible subs and bad business practices (Ugh, remember that squabble they had with dramabeans?) Anyway, I was viki's biggest fan and then they start this nonsense. It seems like they forgot the whole reason why we love them in the first place and concentrated all their attention on this D-rated shows that... Ugh. Let us not go into how much I hated the premise of Dramaworld.
Anyway, I guess it is time to find a new viewing site. Now that viki (and kissasian) are beginning to get on my LAST nerve.

Hi there! I'd love to know who the best streaming services are. I started watching because of Dramafever, but I have noticed that I miss quite a bit in the subs because when I read the recaps I am always thinking, 'Oh! that's what he meant' etc. I was thinking of adding a Viki subscription, but unsure I want to go that far. Any other services, available in the states, that are better?

If I don't know the premise, I would think this is a teaser for a rom-com too. lol.
Woaahhh boosseeeuuu in hanbok plus bright smile! He looks so tender! My heart is melted. lol. And yas PMY and YWJ looks so cute together in the teaser. Hopefully we get some decent amount of lovely one before the angst is coming.
I think I'd fallen like that few times and it wasn't good at all. But if I fall in front of my soulmate it might be different. Though myself wasn’t sure if I could still smile sweetly. lol.

Aw, this is one of my most anticipated dramas together with Ruler!! It's just sad that I have to see them shed blood for ratings, especially since Ruler seems like it would be a hit given the positive feedback from the premiere! But I hope this show holds on its own too! I support both sageuks and I hope they will be successful!!

Wednesday-Thursday time slot is finally having a bloodbath.

05/10 Ruler vs. SP (JCW, NJH and YSH all worked together before in Warrior Baek Dong-soo)
05/31 7DQ joins the battle (JCW-PMY for Healer and YSH-PMY for Remember - War of the Son)

Woo! Good luck to all three dramas! :)

Yeah, two things I worry about this drama are head to head with Ruler and the writer. I think SP has own audience because of its genre non-sageuk. Ruler and 7DQ have pretty similar genre: saeguk, political, melo and romance. Like Doctors vs BM or ML vs MDBC last year, two similar genre airing simultaneously in the same timeslot. The one has dismal rating while another has good rating. I'm pretty sure Ruler will has double-digit onward after the good review. Hopefully this drama has good review too so can draw attention to those who aren't watching Ruler and SP.

I kind of wished KBS2 used this opportunity to schedule their 2-episode drama specials to lessen the tough weeks it would face against Ruler and SP. They cannot schedule it on Monday-Tuesday as well because then, it would go against My Sassy Girl, another romance sageuk. It was their best possible scheduling with Fight For My Way having the best chances against Lookout and My Sassy Girl.

It's a 180-turn from the previous teaser, but I love it! The costumes, the colors, the pretty!

I love that Yeon Woo-jin falls when Park Min-young trips, just so she can feel better. It speaks of how committed he is to her, and it serves as a bittersweet reminder that he ultimately won't be able to stick by her.

Lol I am so ready for this drama!

I love how it starts with a sad voiceover, but the moment cuts to a comical one. And Yeon Woo-jin is so adorable, dropping to the ground to ease her embarrassment! And best of all, Lee Dong-gun's deadpan face blocking the kiss! HAHAHAHA

I've been excited about this drama since I first heard the synopsis. These teasers completely work their magic on me. I'm in love~!

Haha, I remember thinking Lee Dong-gun looked a tad ridiculous between them in the stills of this I saw. Clearly that was intentional ROFL. Part of the reason why I'm excited for him here is because, other than Sweet 18, I've weirdly always liked him best in 2nd lead roles.

I'd read that we'd be getting some rom-com in the beginning between the leads and looks like that isn't wrong. This definitely seems to be poking a bit of fun at the melodrama of its last teaser, hehe. I definitely don't mind starting out with some sweet romance in the beginning!

These two are cuter than cupcakes! I wish the drama would be like this all throughout, though I guess there is no circumventing real-life tragedies.

Also, Park Min-Young is SO pretty! *_* And Yeon Woo-Jin looks delightfully charming!

I've got whiplash from the cognitive dissonance. And I love it! A low-key twist on Park Bo-gum's "Bombastic" teaser for MOONLIGHT DRAWN BY CLOUDS. Very clever and engaging. YWJ is so gallant in this.

With REBEL and SAIMDANG under my belt, I already know what went down in history with the two kings. Why do I do this to myself?

I always think I don't care much for PMY and then I watch her in motion and realize that, this lady is actually darn adorable! I blame Chae Young Shin. I just started SKKS and I love her character already. She's not that optimistic puppy idiot, cross-dressing Saeguk heroine but quite smart in the way she looks out for her own skin. I mean, be selfish for once! I also find her timidity hilarious.

Yeon Woo Jin, where have you been all my life? You stormed into it through your sexy, shy self in Introverted Boss and then you dare show up looking so unkindly(to my sanity) pretty, just as I was wondering how you'd look in hanbok?!!! *sigh*
