Character posters for Lovely Horribly’s top actor, unfortunate writer, and lovestruck PD

This must be one scary drama set. KBS’s upcoming show Lovely Horribly stars Song Ji-hyo (This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair), Park Shi-hoo (My Golden Life), and Lee Ki-kwang (Circle), and posters have been released with our main cast appropriately doused in eerie lighting. I really enjoy a horror-rom-com when done well (see: Master’s Sun, Oh My Ghostess), so here’s to hoping that this show turns out as entertainingly creepy and swoony.

Song Ji-hyo and Park Shi-hoo will play a drama writer and a top star, respectively, who presumably meet while working together on a drama. Born on the same day at the same time, the two are tied by fate, but not in the romantic way you might assume: If one finds happiness, the other becomes equally unhappy. It sounds like the balance has been skewed one way for a long time though, since Park Shi-hoo’s poster reads, “The man who gets everything right.” On the other hand, Song Ji-hyo, looking vaguely distressed and carrying a typewriter in her poster, is accompanied by the caption, “The woman who just can’t seem to get anything right.”

Park Shi-hoo’s character, Yoo Philip, is an actor at the height of his career, considered perfect from head to toe. He is also be a bit of a heodang (i.e., unexpectedly inept), but that just makes his character that much more approachable and lovable. His star power is such that he’s expected to take his career overseas, but he gets caught up in unfortunate events for perhaps the first time in his professional life. Hmm, maybe that means some good luck at last for Song Ji-hyo’s Oh Eul-soon character? Eul-soon has a bit of a dark aura and can be somewhat curt, which isn’t that surprising given her streak of bad luck, but is a warmer person than most once people get to know her.

Eul-soon’s warmth is probably what attracts the attention of Lee Ki-kwang’s drama PD character, Lee Sung-joong. He has a bit of a otherworldly trait as well, and on his poster, he says, “I can see ghosts.” An up-and-coming PD at his station, he only has eyes for writer Eul-soon, and follows her around as a young, innocent suitor. Aww, he sounds adorable, though I can see his character providing most of the thrills in this drama, what with his ability to see ghosts and all.

Lovely Horribly’s supporting cast includes Ham Eun-jung (All Kinds of Daughters-in-Law) and Choi Yeo-jin (On the Way to the Airport), and will premiere in KBS’s Monday-Tuesday slot recently vacated by Are You Human Too on August 13.

How many scummy men are going to get to headline dramas this year?

Why only 2018? They will be in demand in future too.

The production, networks and actors themselves know that if the drama is good, most people will suddenly be ok with the actor (“I like his acting/his character in this drama, I don’t care his personal life) and then they will wonder why male actors like this can rebound in no time.

I feel exactly the same, I'm sick of having to see those men, and sick at the thought that many people will rather believe they were "wrongly accused" instead of facing the reality of trials tackling rape cases that in 99% won't condemn the rapist --'

you can have a career as a convicted rapist as well. TST’s Kyeongha was sentenced to probation for 2014 sexual assault in which he chased down the fleeing victim with a knife and his agency let him debute in 2017.
many of the metoo predators got away with everything after a half-assed apology.

Yes my point exactly ! I agree with you on everything you said. People behind the dramas or movies are rubbing it in our face : "Men can rape you and still get cast" but if ever a woman shows a sexy photo of herself or behave like a diva she can be immediately radiated from drama casts. There are clearly telling us that a man, even a rapist, will always be more valuable than a woman. This is so sad and outraging.

3

I'm not there for sure but regardless if that woman pretended to get drunk/spiked or not, she was being carried by PSH's acquaintance and PSH just let him did that, that says a lot about PSH's personality and his twisted understanding of consent.

3

You do realize the female admitted to fraud right? He was never convicted. We only know they had consensual sex which is not illegal for two adults as far as I am aware. I think trash is flat out calling someone a rapist when they clearly are not.

This is my opinion: I am disgusted by the rude, negative and judgmental opinions of others expressed here concerning this show in regards to actors/actresses and/or production + staff when they have not even seen it yet. To me such comments are just attention seeking and serve no purpose other than to spread hate, immaturity and self validation.

I'm with Tipsymocha in that I enjoy this genre of horror rom com. It seems that I will be one of the few who will be checking this out.

Let me clarify: I am concern with drama and not PSH.

From your comment, I can see that you're quick to judge. That is precisely what you're doing to this drama. And I'm saying that kind of attitude is disgusting. If you dont want to watch because of PSH, saying it once is fine. We get it, you don't want to watch him. Saying it more than once just confirms my belief: "[such] comments are just attention seeking and serve no purpose other than to spread hate, immaturity and self validation".

3
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

You've made three comments now justifying your choice to support this drama and why you're "above us all" for doing so. You sure you're not the one seeking validation? Furthermore, you can't separate PSH from the drama. Supporting the drama is supporting him. Success for his projects enables him to get more work and enables other abusers to continue their careers as well.

8

reply

Required fields are marked *

You need to get your facts straight. 1) I expressed my opinion about attitude's against this drama. 2) I expressed I like this genre 3) I said that the drama does not belong to PSH 4) Whether I like this drama or not, I will need to watch it and find out.

I'm talking about other things besides PSH. Again, you're quick to judge. Obviously you want to believe whatever you want and clearly you believe that just because I am interested, I am supporting only PSH. Do you know which other actors are also in this drama? If I watch it, I am also supporting them and not just PSH. Why should PSH prevent me from supporting the other cast? He shouldn't and is not the reason I watch.

Again, the drama isn't about PSH. Let me repeat myself: the drama isn't about PSH.

If he's your reason, again, don't watch. I really do not understand why you had to comment to my opinion in such a sarcastic and demeaning way.

Realistically, do you and I really determine PSH's success? Do you as an international viewer really determine his success? Do you have a say in what kind of projects he does? He lives in Korea. Koreans determine whether they enable abusers or not.
I just see if I like a drama or not.

If you care that much about PSH, learn Korean, write in Korean and go post your comments on the broadcasting's homepage. Do something about it to prevent abusers from continuing their careers. Being bitter and whiny about it here isn't going to help. Again, all it shows is immaturity, hate and a need for validation.

Yikes, seems like the Oppa didn't mean it fans already made their way here. Says a lot about society when women defending a accused men bring up the you weren't there arugment. Sigh. Law kdramas have been touching on this issue lately so maybe they need to watch those instead of this drama with a scummy dude. Sounds like PSH is just playing himself on this drama, because he only made a mistake because he's a totally inept heodang oppa!

Regardless of what the the mob and pitchfork brigade say I will give this drama a try and judge it on writing, characterization and plot logic. Then I will decide to continue or not rather than the personal life of the lead actor The “OMG he’s a “Rapist”! Gross!!1!” Hysteria is nonproductive just means those people miss out on what could be a fun drama.

5

reply

Required fields are marked *

Exactly. I am going to look at it as a drama too.

Plus it is important to note that the drama is a collaborative group effort. PSH is only the face of this show and to boycott him due to personal reasons mean those people are overlooking other the cast and crew's abilities as well. Their limiting belief is how bias and prejudice are created and these are what prevents people from actually seeing others for who they are instead of that they THINK they are.

Also I want to be clear: I am not a fan of PSH. I really could not stand his acting in My Golden Life. Shin Hye Sun's acting kept me watching. However, to assume that I am a PSH because I want to see the show is faulty thinking. I like the genre, it is the reason I am going to watch the show. Whether I end up liking it or not,I will decided once I see it.

I just want to react on the people who are commenting here that those who, with reason, underline that the main lead was accused of rape are a "hysterical mob", they are not : saying that he is "just" the face of the drama is completely obliterating the fact that the people who work on this drama thought "welllll it's true that he potentially is a rapist but who cares ?? he is famous and handsome, let's hire him". Whenever I see a drama with a man accused of rape as a lead, all I can think about is that the producers are saying to my face that rape is not so awful after all. This is the message that is sent. They are many talenful actor who weren't accused of rape, would be nice of the producers to think about them.

Exactly! In your mind simply being Accused is as good enough to convict him in your mind , boycott all his dramas and preach at people who watch a drama just for the sake of the drama.

It's because in 99% of the cases men are indeed guilty, but proving rape is almost impossible and society always sides with men because in a patriarchal society (and we know Korean sure is one) women are believed to be at fault whenever there is a rape. And actually I'm sad because I like the plot of the drama but unlike you I'm not living in a fantastic world : I know that I'm not watching characters, I'm watching actors playing characters, this the real world and those actors are going to be interviewed, are going to be held as role models to be followed and because of this I can't simply watch a drama obliterating the fact that, in my mind, this man did rape a woman who was unconscious. And I wish I lived in a world where producers wouldn't face me with having to not watch a drama.

Indeed. There are so many talented actors, it would have been so easy to cast someone else. Any position of power and wealth has an elite that protects itself so it can act however it likes, and the ease with which PSH is back is evidence of this. He, and others who have behaved like him, are not singular geniuses without whom humanity, or dramaland, would collapse.
Certainly, a drama is more than just the main actor, but that was their choice, and it is our choice to create a backlash. This is one of the only ways we can begin to root out abusive power structures.

To add on - there is nothing wrong if people choose not to support a show if they do not feel comfortable that a man had been formerly accused of a crime.

Yeah, I have no doubt everyone else on the show worked hard on it, but if they made their bed and chose a male lead a lot of female viewers choose NOT to support for obvious reasons - they made their bed, they have to lie on it and suffer the consequences of poor ratings, regardless of how good the show is. And if you want to support the show for everyone else, go ahead but don't villianize every one else for being ugly about Park Shi Hoo.

It's time producers learnt - we're not short in actors in K drama land afterall.

You are making huge assumptions that most people think the same as you and are already giving this program poor ratings. That’s pretty arrogant.

Plus it’s not fair to put down and harangue others who just want to watch the show and the dozens of others who are involved in its production. If you don’t like don’t watch it but please don’t push your opinions on others.

They were not putting down anyone that want to watch this show, @Non said "And if you want to support the show for everyone else, go ahead but don't villianize every one else for being ugly about Park Shi Hoo"
As for me, it's time to stop supporting all these trashes for keep getting a job in this industry while there's a ton of other capable actors with clean image, it's 2018 already for God's sake. In no way I'm minimizing the crews' and other casts' efforts.

But sure, keep it up with your trash-freepass mentality and keep thriving in Oppapologist Cult .
