Drama viewership ratings for the week of Feb. 17-23, 2020

Well, I can’t believe it, but we’re already near the end of February. Looking back, it’s been quite a crazy month. The movie Parasite won four Oscars and the drama Crash Landing on You set a new ratings record for tvN. And to think that 2020 has only just begun.

Before we get too excited, February still has a few more dramas to offer. On Friday, legal drama Hyena premiered to 10.3 percent and on Saturday, Hi Bye, Mama! premiered to 5.9%. The latter, which took over Crash Landing on You’s spot, is Kim Tae-hee’s first drama since 2015’s Yong-pal. Since then, she’s become a mama in real life with husband and dreamboat Rain (but I digress).

Getting back to our other shows, those in the Monday-Tuesday lineup had an increase in numbers while those in the Wednesday-Thursday lineup had a decrease. Forest and Money Game actually had their lowest ratings to date with 4.1 percent and 1.4 percent respectively. I don’t know what’s going on with the mid-week slot, but it is not the spot to be in right now, that’s for sure.

I thought paragraph 2 was about ITAEWAN CLASS (congratulations IC for the series highest rating for episode 8!) and messing around with my guy Sae-ro-yi (Park Seo-joon) but with the reference to makeup maybe it is taking a shot at TOUCH. Who knows?
Also I picked up the sly copy/paste reference.

IC has lost its steam a bit as shown in it’s plateauing ratings. Touch is actually a nice light watch and ends with a good feeling, I like it, too bad no rating is shown.

Re TOUCH's ratings. See below.

2

Well ofc the pairing is disturbing

2

@Soshi - Which pairing is disturbing?

1

@candycane @norastifler Soshi All pairings are disturbing. Itaewon Class ought to drop the romance and focus on the revenge only.

4

Too early to drop the romance. Only revenge will be too dry. Can create more pairings given the number of cast who can act. The more the merrier. Why not?

3

Some dramas do not need romance (e.g., Misaeng, Stove League). Itaewon Class is one of those dramas.

The revenge is the climax of the show; it won't be too dry. Since the show is already halfway, dropping the romance won't be too early.

Any other pairings would be too forced especially pairing Hyun-yi up with Seung-kwon or giving the murderer a love interest.

1

No it hasn't. It received its highest ratings this week. IC is a great drama. Da-Mi and Seo-Joon are performing exceptionally well.

1

Furthermore, the suggestion that Itaewon Class should only focus on revenge is ridiculous. Relationships between main cast members is vital. For example, the incredibly touching relationship blossoming between Sae-Ro-Yi and Yi-Seo is intimately linked to Sae-Ro-Yi's future plans, including his quest for justice and revenge. It also acts as a contrast to his relationship with Soo-A who doesn't understand him and therefore isn't walking by his side. Although she likes him her priorities are different. In contrast, Yi-Seo is willing to accept her mistakes, work hard to understand him and is willing to walk with him because of love. Anyway, I am sure there are revenge only plot dramas you can watch.

1

I know it has highest rating at ep 8. But it is plateauing meaning its rate of increase is slowing down. The plot is moving slower in my opinion.

2

Tip. Write in structured paragraphs and don't just throw random words together. Write in complete sentences atleast. Didn't you learn the basic rules? Cause this doesn't make you sound intelligent at all. The deciphering game is becoming lame.

It's still fantasy drama SO I won't expecting it all to be realistic. But there is sincerity IMO. But I Hope I'm right, the problem they arise is intriguing. I actually want them to explore The stepmom character.

The ratings for RDTK 2 are just so high I'm wondering if Han Suk-kyu will win an SBS daesung again this year. Or should they come up with an even more prestigious award? Like Life-time achievement award?

No Second Chances is watchable at 1,5 speed, BLWL is a double skipping rope show. The director promised that it won't be usual weekend drama and that there will be lots of love and not too much poor - rich relationships so l was looking forward to it but it's worse than Bold and Beautiful american soap opera. I usually just watch the saturday episode of NSCH and it has better dynamic then.

Time to close the books. The Nielsen ratings are out for episodes 15 and 16-final for little Channel A’s F/S drama TOUCH:
Episode 15: 0.853%
Episode 16: 0.758%
Source:
https://wiki.d-addicts.com/Touch_(2020)/Episode_Ratings

In comparison with Channel A's 2018 drama TWELVE NIGHTS:
TOUCH's average rating was 0.785%.
TWELVE NIGHTS average rating was 0.353%. That is my calculation and unofficial since I can not find an official source. FYI. Here are TN's ratings by episode:
http://asianwiki.com/12_Nights_(Korean_Drama)

Also I did not watch TOUCH but really enjoyed TWELVE NIGHTS.
I hope we see more dramas from Channel A. Thank you Viki for subbing both.

Thank you so much for the reminder about Eric's new drama. I don't usually tune in to variety shows, but thoroughly enjoyed watching him in THREE MEALS A DAY. Observing him organize his tasks was calm and meditative. I loved his performances in OH HAE-YOUNG AGAIN, DISCOVERY OF LOVE, and QUE SERA SERA.

As for Go Won-hee, I'm currently watching her play King Injo's saintly Queen Jangryeol Jo in CRUEL PALACE: WAR OF THE FLOWERS. Her character in FLOWER CREW: JOSEON MARRIAGE AGENCY made me see red, so she did a good job as the Evil Second Lead Female who would be queen.

Thanks @edgarpordwed for the heads up. I loved Go Won-hee in STRONGEST DELIVERYMAN. What comic acting chops she showed! I checked out the synopsis at AsianWiki (under the title: YOOBYEOINA! I don't know if this is the normal case with trot shows. Maybe not.
Anyway, ratings for Mr. Trot hit 30% last week, and it's cable. South Korea is all about trot right now.

30% on cable is not normal for anything. K-dramas have to be at that level of utterly boring for a trot show to get those numbers.

@ally-le,
Sorry to hear that real life has been impinging on your sojourn in Kdramaland. I hope the medical stuff is all at work, and that your kin are all well. <3

I hear you about Dr. Cha. There's something about her tone of voice -- and mannerisms that remind me of Miss Piggy doing one of her signature hair-flips -- that puts me off. She seems to be so clueless, especially when she starts her stream-of-consciousness blathering and no one can get a word in edgewise. Her obliviousness leaves me feeling that she does not deserve Dr. Seo's quiet devotion. -- On the other hand, when I rewatched season 1, Dr. Kang was pretty insufferable for nearly the whole 24 episodes, too. And it took forever for In-bum to thaw out.

Speaking of In-bum, he's got a much better haircut this time around. And... he smiles! Quite a bit. He even shares a hug with Kim Sabu (which had Dr. Seo adorably turning a little green with envy). I nearly keeled over. He's come a long way. I'm so happy to see that.

It feels as if there's too much going on for the Doldam saga to end tomorrow. Is season 3 in the works? I've read that YSJ is heading off to military service this year (ditto for Woo Do-hwan)... so it'll have to wait until he returns if they intend to get the sunbaes back to team up with the rookies. Unless there's a time-jump and cameos by Crazy Whale and Dr. Kang in the final episode... but they've both been busy with their own dramas. Hmmm. I don't want it to end, but the possibilities are driving me bonkers. In a good way. ;-)

Hi @pakalanapikake and @ally. I am glad I bumped into the both of you.
I wanted to watch the original RD, TK before starting
No. 2 which I did. It was great. However that overlapped the airing of No. 2 and then I took a little breather before starting No. 2. All that means I am currently on catch up at episode 6 of No. 2 which I am also enjoying.
A couple random thoughts:
1. @ally I didn't believe what I was seeing when your adopted son Chan made his appearance as Dr. Woo Seo-jin. I guess all that rowing on the Han River paid off. Seriously Ahn Hyo-seop is giving a fine performance;
2. @pakalanapikake. I know Yang Se-jong is a favorite of both of us. I will be looking forward for his cameo. I wonder how he will be able to separate himself from evil dad's influence; and
3. I figure I can catch up with Dr. Kang Dong-joo (Yoo Yoon-seok) over at WISE DOCTOR LIFE/HOSPITAL PLAYLIST. His time on the islands must be over.
O/T and speaking of HOSPITAL PLAYLIST. Thank you Netflix for picking it up. I don't know if you noticed but to me my guy Jung Kyung-ho (as Dr. Joon Wan) looks really skinny in scrubs. Send a coffee truck to the set, please.
Oh final thought. I am also looking forward to SKJ's NICE WEATHER.

@marcusnyc20 bong-soo, cc: @ally-le,
Aw, it's so nice to cross paths with you, too. It's been a while. ;-)

1. If uri Chan blew your mind when he showed up as a general surgeon in RDTK2, wait until you catch up to ep. 15 for his reunion with Mr. Gong. It floated my boat -- no rowing required. ;-)

2. You've got that right, pardner. But not to worry. In-bum pulled the plug on Evil Dad Dr. D'oh at the end of season 1. After picking up the scattered printouts of falsified surgery records that Kim Sabu had handed to D'oh at the reception following the successful artificial heart replacement operation, In-bum bandaged his picayune injuries and declared his independence of his father by heading back to exile in Doldam. I've suspected that his return to the main hospital was all part of Kim Sabu's long-term game plan.

3. I'll be tuning in for Yoo Yeon-seok in HOSPITAL PLAYLIST. It will be fun to see how he portrays a different doc from uri Kang Dong-joo. Must be his doppelgaenger. ;-)

I agree with you that someone better feed Jung Kyung-ho stat. ;-)

Trivia: Kim Dae-myung was in THE FATAL ENCOUNTER with assassin Jo Jung-seok -- and Hyun Bin as King Jeongjo.

At the end last year I finally watched the wonderful MISAENG.
It will be good to see KDM again. HP has such a great cast. Besides JJS scanning the cast I see Joon Moon-sung who was terrific in HAECHI and the list goes on. One thing I like is that HP will be 12 episodes with one episode per week.

But it's true that Teo Yoo is killing it in this role. He's so different from his role in Chocolate!
