Drama viewership ratings for the week of June 1-7, 2020

Let’s jump right into things, shall we? The Monday-Tuesday slot is looking extra full this week, with yet another drama joining in. The drama, My Unfamiliar Family, premiered on tvN to 3.1 percent and jumped to 3.9 percent the following day. The other shows in this time slot have seen their numbers gradually fall, so I’m interested to see how this one will fare.

In the Wednesday-Thursday slot, Soul Repairer has made itself comfortable around 2 percent and Old School Intern around 4 to 7 percent. Here, I also noticed that Mystic Pop-up Bar performed a little better with its Thursday episode — perhaps because the popular Hospital Playlist was no longer in competition. Whatever the case may be, good for Mystic!

Then, on the weekend, The King returned with two episodes, after leaving us with only one last week. The show made up some numbers, rising up to 8 percent again. Now, it hasn’t been in the double digits since its third week, but maybe next week’s finale will change that. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

The numbers are a ratings grave yard. Staying at home does not mean more people watch TV.

Did S.Korea even have stay at home orders? I don’t think people have been cooped up at home for awhile, I think the lower numbers are also due to people being out enjoying summer.

The #StayAtHome challenge by BTS and other celebrities must be a figment of my imagination then. People were told to stay at home even if there wasn't an official lockdown all schools and colleges have been shut for months.

Wait for Kim soo hyun's drama, the only one I'm waiting for this season. It will shake up the ratings for sure

Not looking good for dramas these days. Started the year strong but now it looks bad. King's ratings are so humiliating and the budget for that drama was HUGE, what a disaster for SBS, the writer AND Lee Min ho.

The King, so far, has average rating of 7%. I think. It is doing very subpar for big budget show like this.

Then again, SBS had the experience of Vagabond who has similar rating and big budget like The King.

I don't think its all loss for The King. In South Korea, ratings may be low but internationally it is doing quite well, #1 in many countries.

The keyword is SBS. SBS is taking a huge loss on The King. Though production company is break even by selling broadcast rights to Netflix, LMH and KES's reputations among K-ent are definitely hurt by this.

Yeah international popularity means nothing for SBS. You’d think they’d have learned from Vagabond that big budget and big stars does not mean ratings, but I guess they thought KES meant a sure hit.

LMH and KES will be ok. Every big name in entertainment will have a couple of big flops, as long as they don’t have a string of flops especially with scandals as a cherry on top, I’m quite sure their careers will be ok.

This needs to be a wake up call for networks and for the big names involved though, korean audiences (their main target audience) don’t just fall for big names and big productions anymore.

Nah. I think KES already reached the end of writing career, unless she starts to pick up on trends with drama script writing. Her plotting style is outdated. The trends now are the likes of TWOTM, sky castle. Cast the oldies and give it a realistic but exciting spin. She can't go for the style of YWCFTS or CLOY because she's not funny.

Last season I had tons of dramas to binge on. The current one.. not so much. I have already dropped some shows, and struggle to watch some others. Only have 2 or 3 that I will probably finish at this time. At least from what I read, the upcoming season should be much better if the hyped shows actually deliver on what they promise.

I am soooo sorry for Lee Minho... the lead girl casted badly... i know from the very start this will happen and I was not mistaken.

I don't agree - I don't think the actors are the problem with that show. It is bad editing, poor writing, plot holes, and the like.

Everything about the show was horrible and LMH's acting was not good and the media and fans (excluding biased hardcore fangirls) agreed in my research. Many complained also of no chemistry between the leads and I agree with that and also very little brotherly chemistry either. Let's just call a table a table - everything about the drama was bad. I did read and agree that Woo DoHwan gave a very good performance.

Poor Netflix financed this failed drama. 6.7 on a Friday night with no competition is terrible, and 8.1 for their higher rating is bad too. And it's not just S Korean. The US audience on Netflix dropped to 6.8 after it's first episode. The drama is just bad and LMH's performance was not good and just his popularity could not save the drama, also noted by viewers that are not just hard core fans girls that are biased but will never admit it. The only person that stood out as doing a great job was Woo DoHwan which did a good job in the duel role. Well, not every drama can be a hit.

I don't have time to watch it yet but I'm rooting for "My Unfamiliar Family."
No big fanfare and a shorter family drama.

Despite the obvious faults I was kind of enjoying the king and then this week happened and all I'm thinking is that who approved this nonsensical week.

Mystic bar deserves higher numbers. I was really reluctant to touch it bec of hje but its just perfect. Such a warm light hearted show. And she is pitch perfect here.

I'm honestly surprised that OMB is doing badly like this. Maybe people really are tired of rom-com.

As for My Unfamiliar Family, the rating is good and decent. I hope it continues to increase.

I love the lead girl but the theme is so contrived for an older woman like her

Me, too. I didn't expect OMB to be a big hit, but it's doing worse than I thought. I mean...Its predecessor, Memorist, got better ratings when it had to battle super popular variety shows in the same slot. Besides ratings, OMB is not getting talked about much either, although those who watch it do seem to love it.

I love it but I’m not surprised by the ratings or the fact that it’s not being talked about much in Korea. I think it’s probably the kind of show with a rather niche audience. I think for the most part it’s going to appeal to certain women in their mid to late 30’s and early 40’s. Younger viewers that generate the most chatter aren’t going to watch it for the most part IMO.

Others may have different reasons, but I ended up dropping OMB mainly because I just got tired of the total obsession. I can't say it's really bad, but I did not find it interesting enough to continue.

I expect ratings to be pretty dismal until fall. Ratings are pretty dismal for the most part anyway but especially so in the summer. I am curious about how KSH’s drama will do. Will he continue the recent streak of male stars post military projects not doing so hot? He didn’t choose a big budget project at least.

Kang Ha Neul did well with Camelia. The rating was good and he won best drama actor in recent Baeksang award.

Truly a lighting struck with gold moment. The timing, luck, and sheer will resulted in Kang to rise his profile and introduce himself to a larger audience that he is here to stay. The writer gave him a role of a lifetime. Him winning the Baeksang award was also a nice surprise (I was rooting for him b/c he owned the role), because it displays to the producers that he's one to watch going forward.

I’m curious about how they calculate ratings? Basically no one I know apart from some older people (60s+) actually watches broadcast tv live any more, unless it’s a special event it’s always on demand. I can’t imagine that would be that different anywhere with high speed Internet these days.

Who do you think was watching World of the Married then? That 30% audience was definitely not 60 year olds. Same with Crash Landing and Itaewon Class. Don't blame the bad ratings on the audience. The dramas are sub-par thats why they don't have ratings.

I’m asking because I’m legitimately curious about how it’s done - I’m assuming they include streams in some way. I know about The World of the Married etc (pretty hard to miss) - I’m not trying to defend anyone’s ratings.

If you're legitimately curious than I'll tell you everyone 30+ still watches actual TV. The current crop of dramas is poor material hence their ratings.

If you could add Wind and Cloud and Rain/King Maker the Change of Destiny (TV Chosun Sat-Sun drama) to the weekly ratings, that would be great...
