There is some evidence that the industry lockdowns and pandemic loneliness contributed to the surge of celebrity marriages.

I came across an article on film and drama actors who started out as musical actors and actresses and clicked. I've been curious about three actors already - Uhm Ki-joon, Jeon Mi-do and Jo Seung-woo.
Uhm Ki-joon really sings wonderfully well. His singing voice is melodious. He being a musical actor even leaks through during his lines in dramas. That print is there.
Another is Jeon Mi-do's. Now I see why a good number of beanies made tonnes of comments episode in and out about how hard it would be for her to play tone deaf Chae Song-hwa during Hospital Playlist's music sessions. She's good.
I didn't see Jo Seung-woo's listed in the link but I'll listen to his musical theatre sometime.

Yeah, and the drummer too. He played in Hedwig And The Angry Inch several times.

There are many actors from musical world like Ji Chang-Wook, Kang Ha-Neul, etc. The PD for Prison Playbook chose actors from musical world like Park Hae Soo, Lee Kyu Hyung, Kim Sung Cheol.

What is up with first loves? I feel confident that this is a cultural thing that I am missing, and I’m hoping someone can shed some light on this for me. Is this a thing that only exists in dramas, or is it part of the wider culture in Korea?

What counts as a first love? For a while I thought of them as high-school sweethearts, but now I’ve seen repeatedly that an unrequited crush when you’re 8 years old will also do the trick. Do different people have different definitions?

Is there a discrepancy in gender when it comes to how important a first love is to someone? Men in dramas seem a little more concerned with them, but not always.

I know I’m seeing this through a western lens, but I am SO glad I didn’t end up with my first boyfriend hahaha, and I don’t even remember the inconsequential crushes I had on people in middle school, so I’m just really interested in this concept. Anyone got any insight for me?

Required fields are marked *

I’ve wondered about the obsession over first loves as well. I’ve come to look at it as similar to what is perhaps more common in the west - the concept of “the one who got away”.

This is me playing armchair psychologist here,😅 but I think when people have regrets, or if they’re having a hard time (but perhaps more generally because their present reality doesn’t match up with how they think it should be), they imagine “what could have been”, almost as a form of escapism and as a coping mechanism. When we have some imagined alternate reality to hang onto, I think it gives us hope. So the definition of who qualifies as a first love is probably vague and varied because it allows us to place whomever we like on that special pedestal, and we get to play the “if only…” game.

I don’t think I’ve actually answered your questions, and I certainly can’t speak about Korean culture, but this is how I’ve come to make sense of the whole first loves thing since it doesn’t connect for me either!

This makes a lot of sense to me, and your reasoning provides a justification for why we see first loves so often in dramas. If people were totally satisfied with their lives they wouldn't be in a drama! Maybe it is a conveniently concrete way of communicating a character's "what could have been" scenario. Thanks for weighing in!

I think it's just the romanticization of couplehood generally? South Korea strikes me as a very couple-oriented culture, and I suspect that a lot of people don't date much until they're adults, so there are plenty of people ending up with their "first love" permanently.

I think some kdramas are a little bit unrealistic about first love, however. There's way too much focus on fate and destiny and forever when the couples in question have known each other for all of three weeks, lol.

I think there is definitely some romanticizing of couples going on, for sure. That probably happens to some extent in most cultures.

I like this question, I'm also curious about what modern young Koreans would say about it. I suspect they care a lot less about this mythical first love concept which so popular on any kdrama.
There is a theory that one of the reasons they sell romance so much is because people have so little choice in the other areas of their life. They have to study and work too much, follow so many strict rules and yet have so little chance to achieve the status their capitalism system values so much. What is left? The idea that somebody's main purpose is love and family life. Romance as something fated.

Even dramas that have adult leads usually have them still dealing with these first loves, either they have no past experience or they have never felt real love for any of their previous partners.
Those that have children in a romantic setting are too disturbing to deserve comment.
Those that portray an romantic interest as real love may also turn out creepy as they sometimes seem to mistake stalking for real love.

That's a great (and sad) point about life choices narrowing down to romance. I'm also really curious - and specifically about whether "first love" is a phrase anyone in Korea even uses outside kdramas, or if it's something that was invented within dramaworld, like accidental kisses and sageuk cross-dressing. I always wonder how distorted my view of Korean society and culture is because it comes almost entirely from kdramas and other pop culture.

I have absolutely no idea who my first love was. I can't even remember my first date or my first kiss.

I know! There are so many drama things that I KNOW are only drama things, but sometimes a concept is right on the line, and I legit don't have any idea if real people ever talk/think about this concept.

I've always just assumed it was a way to develop romanticism within a character, to have them obsess over their "first love" or pine over them for years and years... none of which is realistic to me. I know that the Korean people I know personally have no overwhelming desire to hook up with their "first loves" in later life. Most of them would be hard pressed to even remember that person with any detail, never mind be quietly yearning for them over many years.

I always assumed the drama world is treating this as a way to make a character seem romantic, he/she is sweetly sitting in the background with an unconfessed silent and pure love for the other person, kind of makes you want to encourage this character and see him/her get what he/she truly wants - a key fantasy to add to the emotion in a romance-based television series.

I suppose there is an element of it in teasing among friends - I have witnessed people being teased years later about their "first love" from college or whatever. But it's not that they are harboring long-held unrequited love for that person, more like they are being teased for being obsessed with that person back in the day, especially if a reunion has occurred in more recent times. Not that they've never moved on in their own life.

Armchair psychology note - it would be kind of obsessive to hold a true love for someone for many years, out of adolescence and into adulthood or otherwise. Especially if that person was not a part of your everyday life, that would just be weird and more than a little creepy. Why would anyone spend that energy keeping that fantasy alive? Doesn't seem healthy to me.

4

reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't find it especially realistic either, but that's what made me ask the question - I wanted to try to make sure that this is mostly a drama-centric concept before I do too much rolling my eyes at it, haha!

The teasing among friends about potentially embarrassing "first love" or at least the way a person acted at the time seems like a much more familiar and realistic way of thinking about them.

Totally agree that outside of dramaland (and sometimes inside it) the idea of pining for someone forever seems a tad creepy. I think I like the instances better when someone sort of has forgotten about the other person until they (through a famous dramaland coincidence) encounter their first love again later.

I had a crush on someone before I clocked 10. But I wouldn't call that first love. It was a feeling based on something that bonded us together. I even thought of marrying the said person and crush. As I grew, perspectives changed. I likewise forgot about the crush.
I still remember my first crush, and my first romantic interest. I can't really call them my first love but they definitely count as a first love situation.

The way first loves are portrayed in Kdramas is true for almost all times. What happens when you meet someone better along the way? You still return to the first love. That is definitely true and real. In a good number of cases I find that to be the end of the love triangle that occurs.

A woman's first love's hold is really strong it takes a lot of strength to override it, especially if he was a very good man, or even an abusive, jealous lover who showered her with love and care and attention. So I see why men are concerned about it more so when it seems like she doesn't want to let go.
And it's same with a man's first love. A lot of tension will arise if the first love comes back into the picture, whether or not he is married, or in a serious relationship, or is single.

Shopping season is about to stat too - let's see what's up this time around. Would be more fun if inflation does a steep up move. It will show how much strength everyone has.

Its time for XI - most easiest way is always - double down. That's what XI is doing right now. XI used the wave for his gains beautifully and that showed his nature but much part of that nature actually turns in big risk factor, which for most part, a leader furiously not accept. This is very common. Then comes the

HOW DARE YOU - you can feel every inch of character from this line alone.

XI truly is a politician who can win any election. More adaptive politician of any democratic country. Elections take place in China too, competition is always there - one goes another one takes place - people do have some voice. It's just that everything happens under the banner of CCP. lack of variety of people.
As long as money keeps pouring in and people can happily live their day to day life no one shows much concern about what happens in palaces.
This is where XI in a pinch comes from - XI bigger than CCP and people not so good financial position.

XI has kept every opposition in CCP silent for some time but if other sides get some boost from people they can make XI calm a bit.
Double Down - power boost this week VS. Opposition relying on people. fun

Cold Season the most entertaining season.

Hello my fellow beanies

I wanted to write something to say thank you – I have so little time to come on here and get involved, but am forever indebted to you all 😊

Almost exactly 4 years ago today, as reminded by my Google timeline showing me a saved picture of Go Ah Ra, I saw my first ever K-drama by complete accident and immediately fell down the crazy beautiful rabbit hole of K-drama. Black was the first K-drama I ever saw and left a big impression, and I dug out Dramabeans back in October 2018 to try and make sense of it all. And get some recommendations on what to watch next.

Thanks to Dramamad, DelSatu, Becky, Korfan, Ally, bong-soo, mugyuljoie is preciousss, coolgirl, Omo omo omo, tsutsuloo and lots of others for replying to my early comments and getting the ball rolling on what to watch. I watched all of your recs and plenty more besides.

I can safely say my life has changed these past 4 years. I have watched something around 200 dramas now (tracked of course on the indispensable MDL), have been on trip of a lifetime to Seoul and the amazing Nami Island (Winter Sonata), learnt (or at least learning) a new language, and have been taken to emotional places that I never thought television was previously capable of. Small moments live in my mind forever – the joy of Park Min Young’s dancing scene in Healer, the “shoe scene” in Misaeng, the epilogue of Melancholia, the gut-wrench ending of Smile Has Left Your Eyes… And OMG when the chemistry fizzes off the screen, like in Something in the Rain, Secret Garden, Fated to Love You, it is surely heaven sent.

Some of my 10/10 scores on MDL for : My Mister, Misaeng, Live, Healer, Dear My Friends, Age of Youth (first series is best), Goblin (the only drama I’ve watched 3 times through). I’ll give a particularly special mention to “The Light in Your Eyes”, which has quite the most incredible, audacious surprise reveal I have ever seen in my life – that turns the entire show on its head and made me think of certain things in a new light.

So thank you again. Thanks to you for helping bring all of the above into my life. Thanks to you my 9 year old daughter wears a Kim Bok Joo “SWAG” t-shirt. Thanks to you for my having soju in my fridge. 감사합니다!

Thanks - I will check that one out. I seem to like a lot of dramas that no-one else does - hence my love for About Time, Moment of 18 and Backstreet Rookie. I thought Inspector Koo was hugely underrated also - being what amounts to an unofficial K-remake of Killing Eve. Although, I have tried to rewatch Black and it doesn't hold up well. I guess, thinking back 4 years ago, it was more the onslaught of new TV tropes my poor brain was dealing with, and a plot that throws you in at the deep end. As we know, many K-dramas do that, and you need a few episodes for it to calm down. :)

I was on the road last week but when I returned home I was stunned by the news of artist Kim Jung Gi’s sudden passing in Paris. Kim, 47, was an exceptional artist-teacher-mentor. You can see his live drawing skills in hundreds of YouTube videos. He was a unique artist since he could visualize in his mind his complex 3-D drawing without reference photos or sketches. Professional artists respected him and they were in awe of his art. When I looked up recent articles on his passing, I was surprised to find more overseas publications wrote about his death than South Korean (and a few Korean publications never covered the story). I guess he was more well known or appreciated outside his home land even though he founded a Korean art school.

Because he was in France, there were a lot of French articles and tweets about him.
They did an event in St-Malo to show him their respect for the comics festival. People could draw flowers on the sand.

Required fields are marked *

There was a table at the New York Comic Con with flowers left in his memory. (That is where he was heading to). There is a dividing line often in the art world between what is considered "fine art" and "illustration" (including comic art), with "fine artists" getting much more coverage in the press and more prestige (in the USA). That may explain some lack of coverage if the same is at play in Korea.

Hello Dear Beanies: Been traveling for a spell and could only check in when I had wifi. This was part of my plan to reduce screen time but I must admit I missed all y'all. Looking at the number of comments on all the new dramas, thinking maybe I didn't miss too much?
Read and re-read Heyer Club "The Grand Sophie" while hiking and eating in Italy. Almost made it through " Monkey King" but it was akin to reading a Marvel movie.

Always good to have real life evidence of time well spent 😊
A lot of people have been commenting that they have not been impressed with current K dramas recently so have gone older K drama, C or J or other culture drama route or books/real life. I think we all experienced a pandemic so it’s not surprising that content written/produced before, during and after is going to be interpreted through that lens. Our expectations have been changed as we want/need/value things differently.

True 'dat. I noticed the women in the markets and grocery stores of the little part of Italy we visited (Liguria). We don't do resorts, we are out in the neighborhoods where we can observe parents dropping their kids off at school and doing the recycling. All the women looked so tired - and who can blame them?
Providing the emotional soothing and the normalcy and the food and the washed clothes came from the moms. We gals need a break, eh?
So maybe dramas can acknowledge our complete fatigue and stop with all the legal story lines. When has the legal system ever supported us?
'Sayin.

"Shooting Stars" - I'm one episode away from completing this, and it's not so bad. I know it's likely a glamorized version of what actually goes on behind the scenes, but it's been an eye-opener. I thought the side characters were interesting, even more so than the main couple. The PPL is quite distracting here, though. That said, what is that candy ball that they drop in their drink? Will it work with drinks other than soju?

Happy weekend beanies! I want to comment on several variety/reality shows I’ve recently watched. Sikjahoedam (K-food summit) is 6 episodes where experts in the food industry discuss how to raise awareness and love for Korean food globally. It’s informative, thoughtful, and offers interesting perspectives. The CEO of cupbok made me want to try it (we just got one in town). Also, now I know Bibigo brand is authentic and good quality.
United Fathers is a cute show about foreign dads who married Korean women and p their child raising experiences and sometimes advice or tips.
Dopojarek: story of Homme the K-Wanderer is a group of Korean celebs who travel together. Joo Woo Jae is kind of a glum rain cloud but I like him in spite of his low energy, haha. Off to Denmark in ep 1!
EXO’s Travel the World on a Ladder in Namhae is cute, of course. I’m Xiumin’s fan forever 💕
Add these to Love in Contract, The Law Cafe, Mental Coach Jegal, Seasons of Blossom, Good Job, Cheer Up, and Bad Prosecutor D.O. Exo again), and my Korean drama plate is pretty full! Makes me happy 😃
P.s. Mental Coach Jegal uses such questionable counseling tactics in the name of helping such as tricking adult athletes into getting on a bus to go to a lecture in place of training. My question is : if it was such a good idea, why wasn’t it a legitimately planned session in the first place! The means justifying the end is a cover up for bad practices at best and criminal acts at worst.

I couldn't keep this in anymore. I usually find actors and actresses in K dramas incredibly beautiful, but in a recent one I suspect the main actress had quite a lot of work done, to the extent where I find her almost unwatchable. It is just too distracting. I blame unrealistic beauty standards. I love watching beautiful people, but there must be a line that should not be crossed.
