After traumatized by Meteor Garden, I’m always wary with C-drama. But I have hope for Tientsin Mystic. I really really like what I have seen in the first five episodes.

Traumatized how? I’ve seen this drama and I won’t give you spoilers but this is my first c-drama. Scarred me. lol

Dragging, lack of focus and that WTF wedding/ending. I have trust issues with C-drama writing after Meteor Garden 2018.
Yes, Tientsin Mystic has too many cadavers in only five episodes. But I enjoyed everything else so far.

Mystic Nine (the name used on DramaFever (#RIP), is going to go off the rails but after you’re finished tell me what you think. Like I said, Mystic Nine scarred me and gave me trust issues but it also gave me William Chan. So I can almost forgive it…almost. I watched William Chan in Only Side By Side with You. Again, trust issues. I didn’t learn my lesson because I watched Age of Legends until DramaFever shutdown. It wasn’t going well.

For me, c-dramas are horribly edited and the storylines almost always go off the rails, lose their way. Good luck!

If cdramas were 24 episodes instead of 50 or more, they would be fantastic, but they need to strrrrrreeeettttttch with so much filler, they almost always go down disastrous and boring tangents. Politics and/or corporate takeovers are favorite padding.

Meteor Garden…..so many kidnappings, the stupid Caina subplot, and that wedding, all understandably scarring experiences. However all of this was tempered by the charm of the pineapple-headed star.

I don’t even want to talk about how some of them end abruptly. Huh?…wait…is that the end? It can’t be the last episode…can it?

(Heyyyy so there’s one Cdrama that is 24 episodes and has good writing and doesn’t lose it’s way and doesn’t go off the rails and it’s called When We Were Young 2018 and you all should watch it… )

@sicarius You’ve convinced me. I’ve put it in my to watch bookmark folder, and if it holds up as well as A Love So Beautiful does over 23 episodes, I will thank you.

(@jenmole says it’s better than ALSB. I haven’t seen ALSB so I can’t attest to that but I adored WWWY18. I don’t cry in many dramas, and I don’t rewatch much, but I almost cried in it and I would rewatch it so I think that means something.)

Your last paragraph, that’s my issue with C-drama, even with my favorite one, like Nirvana in Fire 2. Meteor Garden is the best example of that issues multiply 100 times. It’s really terrible.

Because its a remake of THE meteor garden (not just simply bbf franchise); the one that started these all asian wave worldwide. They need to make it longer/more detailed so they can put more ads and ppl.
If you are okay with older drama, try the 2001 version.

Note: i know theres other dramas or stars that also started the wave with them, be it korean or chinese/taiwanese or japanese, but at the time its like nobody doens’t know about meteor garden and f4.

I love the 2001 version. It was on our local TV, I watched it took the country by the storm in summer 2002. Even my professor used ‘Ni Yao De Ai’ as his ringtone 😂
Meteor Garden 2001 was also the reason why I didn’t watch Kdrama until 2016 because I didn’t believe there’s other asian drama better than Meteor Garden 😂

I still occasionally think of the sister dancing at the wedding and wonder wtf. Randomly pops into my head at the oddest moments. Maybe it was some sort of subliminal programming and when China flips a switch somewhere, we will all stand up and start dancing too.

I don’t know sic, I feel like Angie Chai treated the audience as if they don’t have brain or if they do have brains, they’re filled with t*rd. I’m still bitter she ruined her own beloved creation.

I mean it’s not her creation. It was a manga. And the manga writer said MG18 was the closest to the original. And I unashamedly and unironically kinda love it anyway. 😂😂😂 As my cover picture will attest to lol.

I mean Meteor Garden 2001, the adaptation is still her creation right? Angie decided the casting (and she’s still very good in this) and changed the setting to college among other things.
Meteor Garden was one of 2018 DB memories that I cherish the most. So it’s not all that bad. But I can hardly trust C-drama after that mess.

The first MG was written by her yes.
But I meant she can’t really ruin something that is the 9th remake of an even crazier and batshit insane manga… 😂
Alas I’ve only seen two CDramas and like one way more than I should and am still getting over the second so I’m hardly the best person to encourage you to keep trying them. But I think MGs flaws were just as much a problem of the original story and the fact that story seems to breed ridiculousness as they are of CDramas in general. I don’t think it’s a heralding example of CDramas overall. That’s like rating all Kdramas by BOF lol.

I’ve seen 7-8 c-dramas before Meteor Garden, most of them from Daylight Entertainment, a prominent drama company, yet they still have issues like thatsp mention above.
I love TV too much to dismiss chinese dramas, but now I lower my expectation, C-drama still has long way to go.

Ahhhh you would know much more than me then! Pfft.
I feel like if CDramas in general are like cmovies then they’re only to be watched when you feel like crazy crack stories lol with the odd gem.

@sicarius with C-drama, when it’s good, it’s really really good, take Nirvana in Fire and Tientsin Mystic for example. C-drama is excellent in building complex world/realm/setting for the story. I don’t know how to explain it…
If I compare MoTA with Tientsin Mystic; In MoTA, Jinwoo is the center of the story and everything else, including the plot, move forward with Jinwoo. It’s like Jinwoo is the decision maker and the writer of MoTA.
In Tientsin Mystic, the writer created the world with the mystery in it to be solved by our heroes. So every moves from the heroes are responses/reactions from plot movement in the story.
I don’t know if it make sense to you 😄
