I think they are 2 different women. First is the mother of Grand Prince (the little boy). Not sure if the Grand Prince is the current king’s half brother or not. Second is the queen, current king’s wife.
Historically little kid Yeongchang was Gwanghae’s half brother – his mother was queen while Gwanghae’s mother was just consort, which made the kid a potential contender for the throne. It did not end well.
In this drama, is Gwanghae the king (father is dead), or is the father still the titular king off somewhere north? If Gwanghae is the king, that makes the Yeongchang’s mother the Dowager Queen?
So far this writer’s version of Gwanghae is different from the historical Gwanghae. He was more capable than his father and older brother, even from a young age. When the Japanese try tried to invade Joseon his father went into hiding in Ming and left the 18 year old Gwanghae in charged of protecting and rebuilding the country. Naturally the people would love Gwanghae more and his father decided to install him as the crown prince over his older brother who fail to protect the border.
Unfortunately, Ming denied the king’s petition for Gwanghae’s installment because by birth right, his incompetent older brother still have a claim to the throne.
Yeongchan was born later to the king’s 2nd queen. By then, the king was dying and his legitimate son was only 2 yrs old so he named Gwanghae as his successor.
Based on this writer’s last sageuk she can bring back the dead like she did to Moonlight’s main character. He died in history but she let him live in the drama and even became the king.
The scene of the first pic – the King referred to the mother as your majesty (in English)…I thought she was the queen? If not, why call her your majesty?
The scene of the second pic – they spoke familiarly, no titles…isn’t that odd? Are we sure she is the Queen, not a consort?
According to Lord Cobol, she was the queen of previous king.
He called her omma mama, which is actually (royal) mother. He definitely called the second one queen.
Me three. I was convinced they are 2 different women based on how the king treated them. He was kinda sweet to the queen, and threatening to the first one.

I’m really puzzled.

Two different ones! He might have two wives. Omamama is what relation I don’t know, but that’s what he called the younger one with child prince.
