2008 KBS Drama Awards

All right, we’ve seen MBC’s Acting Awards (met with much criticism) and SBS’s awards, so now we close out the broadcast station awards with the 2008 KBS Acting Awards.

No real surprise (or controversy) for KBS’s Daesang, awarded to veteran actress Kim Hye-ja for her role in the popular series Mom’s Dead Upset. Personally, I don’t know that Kim was outstanding in that drama specifically, but there’s no doubt she’s built up an impressive, long-running career and therefore this was probably more of an opportunity to give her a lifetime-achievement-ish Daesang.

Choi Su-jong presents with and Han Ji-min:

Song Il-kook (Kingdom of the Wind) wins a Top Excellence award:

I really don’t get this dress-changing habit that some actresses have gotten into (and this is mid-ceremony, not red carpet to awards show). But no doubt Choi Jung-won (Kingdom of the Wind) looks lovely in both of her choices:

Because the acting awards were not handed out to everyone nominated, some of my personal faves like Kang Ji-hwan (Hong Gil Dong) were shut out of acting honors and relegated to categories like Netizen and Best Couple. (But he’ll surely have a long career, so that’s not too much of a disappointment.) He accepts here with Yoon-ah and Hong Gil Dong co-star Sung Yuri, who looks wonderful.

Oh, Jang Geun-seok (Hong Gil Dong), you were SO CLOSE! After that atrocity on the MBC awards carpet, you came in a sharp (men’s) suit and so very nearly pulled it together. But what. is. with. the. hair. (I think it’s cute he’s hugging Kang Ji-hwan, though.)

Okay, here’s the thing. Sung Yuri (Hong Gil Dong) is stunning, and she’s got fantastic makeup and hair (meh on the dress, but the overall look is lovely). HOWEVER…

…she looks almost exactly like Park Min-young! The Hometown of Legends star came wearing almost the exact same silhouette and rocked the same hair and makeup styling.

I didn’t catch much of Mom’s Dead Upset, but I do think Jang Mi-hee was hilarious and fully deserving of the acting nod.

Eom Ki-joon and Bae Jong-ok won for The World They Live In, which did not take many honors but a least acknowledged its two stronger actors:

At first I was a little confused seeing East of Eden pair Han Ji-hye and Park Hae-jin together, but then remembered that they both had roles in KBS daily dramas: Han in Likable or Not, Park in As Much as Heaven and Earth:

This makes two straight nights of looking fabulous and happy for Lee Yoon-ji (Great King Sejong):

Kim Ji-soo‘s (Women in the Sun) chocolate-brown gown looks great against her skin tone:

The dress is marginally better than the black one she chose for MBC’s yesterday, but that’s not the big concern: If Choi Kang-hee looked like she was flying high at SBS’s awards, Lee Hana (Women in the Sung) looks like she’s been dosed with horse tranquillizers. Eyes unfocused, dull expression — what is going on here?

Yoon-ah cries as she accepts for her role in You Are My Destiny:

Kim Jung-nan (You’re My Destiny); Kim Yong-gun with Mom’s Dead Upset co-star Jang Mi-hee:

Child actor winners Lee Hyun-woo (Great King Sejong) and Shim Eun-kyung (Women in the Sun). I think Shim is a cute up-and-comer, but she’s shown a tendency to dress a lot younger than befits her, contrary to most young starlets trying to dress too old. She doesn’t look bad, but it’s odd seeing a 14-year-old in a little-girl dress and Mary Janes.

Yoon Hee-seok, winner for special one-act drama:

Lee Pil-mo (You’re My Destiny); Lee Won-jong (Great King Sejong); Yoo Chul-joo, lifetime achievement winner:
