@327 cingdoc -

The idea of purchasing a region free DVD player entices me…which lead me to the next question…for those of us who do not understand Korean and must have subtitles, do the other region’s DVD set have English substitles?…otherwise , it would be wakarimasan for me ( cannot understand anything in the drama)

I think we should be clear about the different kinds of DVD sets that are out there.

1. Official (authentic) DVD box sets generally are of high quality, and the subs are as good (or nearly as good) as you will find from fansubbing like from WITHS2. Korea is part of Region Code 3. Almost all korean dramas' official (authentic) DVD boxsets come with English subtitles.

If you give me names of dramas that you would want to see if the official boxset comes with English subs, I'll let you know.

2. Dubious quality, pretty much homemade bootleg copies that are mass produced and sold eBay and in Chinatowns/k-towns across the US (and other places too).

The reason the HGD english subtitles (in particular) have been so bad is likely because we aren't talking about the official DVD boxset, but these bootlegs. HGD is a KBS drama series, produced by KBS Media. The official DVD set is actually called the "Limited Edition" and there are two versions - the Korean version is for Regions 3,4,5 and 6. And there is a Japanese version, for Region 2. The Korean version is in Korean, and has the option of English subtitles. The Japanese version is in Korean, and has the option of Japanese subtitles. The version that most ppl will be looking into is the Korean version with the optional English subtitles. This version costs between $100-$150.

Now, the authentic boxset is not the same as the smaller red or grey version that has optional Mandarin audio dubbing and both English and simplified Chinese subtitles. The sellers often write, "English Subtitles might contain grammatical and/or typos." These bootleg versions are really crap. These are the versions you see everywhere on eBay, being sold for $15-$20 or so, also on street corners in Chinatown and k-town. These versions are Region Free or Region 0 (all regions). The reason is because they are basically just downloads burned onto a bunch of DVDs and slapped together with plastic.

For these bootlegs, you wouldn't need a region-free DVD player, because the whole point is that the bootleg DVDs are burned by personal computers with software that allows for all DVD players to read them.

The reason to buy a region-free DVD player is so that you could actually purchase the authentic DVD boxsets, like the Limited Edition Hong Gil Dong boxset (with English subtitles), or the Director's Cut City Hall boxset (to be released at the end of the December 2009, with English subtitles), or even You're Beautiful Director's Cut DVD boxset (still in development, with pre-orders being taken through first week of January 2010, almost for certain to have English subtitles).

@Samsooki
I'm all for buying the authentic version. My only concern is that they need to have English subtitles ( and not the kind that @ockoala mentioned!). I don't mind spending the money for quality drama ( what college tuition savings for the kids???) as long it is, as you stated, legit and complete. Before I joined OT and found AZVN and dramafever, I usually just followed the actors/actresses ( like Gong Yoo and Kim Sun Ah) from one of their drama's to their next one. I started a small collection and only purchased the authentic DVD's; that is the reason I get very frustrated when I finally see an (older) drama and then find out it's impossible to find ( HGD, Hwang Jin Yi, Pure 19,ROI, Painter of the Wind...CH, YB) Please advise and further explain....Thanks ;)

@316 celestialorigin
Ah... Still haven't seen it. I have to wait for subs. They should be out by Friday. That's what I get for marathon'n but who can resist Oguri Shun in a suit being aloof and emotionless? And I'm bubbling along in Meichan. I really like it. Again Hiro is really good here. I haven't seen him in many things but I like this type of role. I'm usually drawn to these types of guys/characters so its great to be able to really like him in a role, not as a secondary lead or character.

@Binnie in Friend
I haven't seen it either but my drama-buddy really liked it and thought that he was wonderful. She's huge HB fan but thought this role was really stand out for him. She also agreed with samsooki that ep 19 was the best ep.

@339 isabelh
Thank you. I did notice that and it is still an option. I have it dl so it might be her best bet this holiday season. She doesn't really like being at her comp all the time but I think that she might be investing in that "thing" that connects your comp. to the TV... Either way she will have HGD in her possession (fist in the sky)!

@cingdoc JGS
I think that he has definitely improved. HTK was by far the best and I think that will see even better from him, though I will hold all up to YB's HTK and say..."EH."

As for HGD, I rather liked the drama all around. The hardest role for me to stomach (in dramas) was Beethoven's Virus. He just never sold me. I'm not sure what it was really. The acting, the story, his co-star. Idk but I really hated it. Gil Dong was fine to me. I felt for the prince. I loved his thoughtful manner. I can see by playing older characters he seems over his head and that could've been the case there but maybe I was so entranced by his voice and the wig, I let all that slide.

@ Millionaire's First Love- Everyone
Speaking of films, just curious but what would you say is the best Korean film you've seen?
For me, I haven't seen many that I liked, let alone loved. I find that at times the cultural gap is a little wide in the film dept. But one of the first I ever saw was "Addicted" with Lee Byung Heon and Lee Mi-Yeon. Something about that film said something to me. Maybe I'm a glutton for the odd and obsessive but I really loved it. It lingered with me for days after I finished. I don't know about anyone else but when that happens I know I enjoyed it. When a story lives with you for awhile.

Just finished meichan no shituji, now and saw your post. I find myself deliciously entranced by Hiro's voice which transcended my reality.Suddenly I was in an alternate universe where nothing made sense anyways and that was perfectly fine. All I needed was Hiro softly whispering those sweet words into my ear... Ah, he's divine... And Oguri kun in TD, now, he looks like a grown man, not a boy any longer and I quite like it.

I haven't seen that many... But the ones I remember... "3 iron" and "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter"by Kim Ki-Duk, guess he's categorized as an Indi film director. Oh, and "Musa the warrior"? I loved that one as well. And Chan-wook Park's works. I don't usually like those kind of movies, somehow they were compelling enough for me to see.

If anyone has more recommendations, please let ma know as well. Thank you.

Wow...what to say about Thirst? It wasn't at all what I was expecting, which was something along the lines of a Korean "Let the Right One In".

Not even close. It was almost like watching two entirely different movies. The first hour is straight up horror in which our hero Song Kang-ho begins a slow descent into madness, abandoning morality and humanity, and his priest's collar, for bloodlust (a LOT of blood and a LOT of lust). But the second half is pure absurdity, almost to the point of being slapstick. It's National Lampoon meets the Shining!

Which sounds as if it's a bad thing, but oddly enough, it's not. It went on for too long (in fact, I nodded off once), but for the most part I was fascinated. The first half is hushed and whispered, filmed in muted blacks and greys, and the second half is literally screaming with noise and color.

It's wild.

Oh, that's the new one by Chan-wook Park, right? I just put that on my que on Netflix this afternoon. It sounds promising. Argh, my work is going so slow, very tedious, using rather expensive stones... and I'm redoing things forever. it has to feel and look right. Is it past 1am for you?

@ 352 cingdoc

I read the recap for Ep 21 on Soompi but have not watched the raw yet. Seems like our couple was on the backburner for most of the ep anyway, or at least there wasn't much forward movement, so I haven't been in that big a hurry. But since you have watched it, do you think HS was swayed at all by JK's question? It didn't sound like he was from the recap...but I worry. We've still got a long way to go and I'm sure the road is about to get bumpy. I really hope Viikii can sort out the problems they're having. :-(

@ 355 nea:notoriousnoona

Here are a few movies that I liked:

1) The Good, The Bad, The Weird (my favorite, loved it!)

2) A Moment to Remember

3) Rough Cut

4) An Affair

5) Il Mare

6) Frozen Flower

7) Friend (although I preferred the drama)

@ 359 celestialorigin

Yep, it's the newest and the first of his films that I've seen so far. And it is almost 1:00 a.m. here! :-)

My first ever Korean movie I watched should have been My Sassy Girl (I mean, great segue into k-dramas, right?)

But I think it was during my post-breakup nihilistic punk stage that I first decided to watch a k-movie, and it was......Old Boy.

I then watched, in succession, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and then Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (when it was released - what a way to meet Lee Young-ae, let me tell you that, instead of through Da Jeun Geum).

I'm now in my happy roses land, and have no desire to re-visit those awe-inspiring works, but am glad to have watched them.

I especially recommend Old Boy, it's truly a masterful film. Don't quote me on the subject matter, I'm trying a bit hard to suppress that memory.

I second langdon's top 5 (except for Rough Cut, which I have not seen). I also want to add Lee Byung-hun's A Bittersweet Life.

And for the sheer bat out of hell hilarity of it all - check out my "I lub you" in The Restless. You'll rest easy afterwards. :-P

And for my alltime most fun I've ever had watching a k-movie - check out The Host.

From what I've seen and read, what HS feels about JK is more like pity. At least for now, his feeling toward JI is stronger than anything else. For me, the secondary (love)developement between the brother and JS is sweet ( She actually softens up ; they are very cute couple). I did tell you that the local LA's channel is showing the drama, right? Last Sun nite was episode 1...we'll see

Psst, my E. Wagner book arrived today. Time to compare a Harvard man to a Yale guy. :-) Hee hee, just kidding. I'm actually beyond excited to read it, I love history, I especially love Asian history, and right now, I'm completely addicted to Korean history courtesy of a few sagueks I've watched.

"That Shilla pig must die! I will carve out your intestines and eat it" so says Bora.

And something about This Mishil becoming a Korean goddess in the Heavens?

I simply must understanding what liberties the writers of MBC, SBS and KBS are taking with centuries of Korean history.

Those j-dramas and TW-dramas/TVB dramas can't fool me when they doctor Chinese and Japanese history. But Korean history, pretty much zilch, so I would in fact believe that SYR was a Baekje princess and SJS her errant knight in pokey-haired armor. I need lessons, stat, before I can even consider watching Conspiracy in the Court and 8 Days (this is an answer to your earlier query, hjkomo, I have not watched but intend to).

You don't want to know. :D For example, Yushin is supposed to be about the same age as Chunchu. Deokman might have had 3 husbands. Mishil was probably dead before Deokman came along. A star did not split because the queen had twins. And btw, they weren't twins either LOL.

And no ... the grandson of Jumong didn't look exactly like Jumong. Just saying. :D

"Oh! No! Another death threat! from normally totally rational Samsooki"

LOL!!!!! Wha???
I had to do a double-double-take on that last part. :P

@ #332, cingdoc

It snowed in the Berkeley and Oakland hills yesterday. This morning, hubby de-iced my windshills (he's a pro, being from the midwest), and defrosted & warmed up my car for me...all done voluntarily because he knows I hate the cold. What a sweetie. :D

I hope you get to watch ROI with great subs because it really does deserve that much. Even the MBC America subs didn't do it justice...they were certainly sufficient but "lacking" nonetheless. ;)

@ mookie - "I cant agree on him improving with each drama, he’s so unnec lost and confused in HGD."
& belleza - "Yeah, I’m with Mookie on that one. I thought he was way-in-over-his-head in HGD, and just serviceable in Beethoven Virus. While his performance in Hwang Ji-ni set him on the fast path, I felt he wasn’t ready for those roles."

I'm with both of you on this one. While YB was an improvement over HGD & BV for JGS, I still prefer the talent he showed in his younger work.

@ langdon813

Wasn't Kim Hae Sook (the mother-in-law) fantastic in Thirst?
I dragged hubby to watch it in the theatre, and it was a little too weird for his tastes, but he appreciated its artistry.

Maybe, you can someday take your husband to a Korean BBQ buffet, and he'll learn to appreciate some of what Korea has to offer. Mine drove 50 miles for it on Sunday (his idea!) and will occasionally watch a Kmovie with me...although, dramas are another story (you already heard his take on IRIS).

So, I watched Red Cliff (the abridged version) in the theatre today with a friend.
Overall, quite enjoyable. Tony Leung's still looking good. Takeshi Kaneshiro is hawt (this is the first I've seen him in anything), and all he had to do was stand there looking pretty.

Patient hubby even listened semi-intently for a whole 30 seconds while I tried to explain all the cool infantry maneuvers (with the shields), which were fantastic, btw. I loved the fight sequences and battle strategy in RC. Now I want to watch the full version.

@ nea:notoriousnoona

I liked Addicted as well...and the other movies above.

Am I the only one who didn't like My Sassy Girl?! o_O

ARGHHH... I HATE RC with a vengeance... (nth against your opinion hjkomo)

One mention of RC on me = pouring hot water on gremlins.
I watched the abridged lately (yeah I'm misogynistic), thought it was easier to swallow than the full version solely because I had less time to poke my eyes out repeatedly.

On a much more fanahjumma existence of mine, I can declare I shared MrX's dripping pain exactement watching the TV sagueks of late.

Takeshi's character ZhuGe was the smartest war strategist ever born in China, it's a historical fact, and on top of that he's a philosopher, scholar, inventor, the Da Vinci a millennium ++ prior....his braincells were soo dazzling and sparkling his physical hawtness was almost unnoticed (but yes, he's a handsome dude carrying a fan 24/7). and o he's so not designed to just stand there pretty to provide homoerotic fantasies to Tony's Zhou. In Mr JW's hand, we got a smiling gigilo.

Again, I wont repeatedly rant on RC IF Mr JW didnt set out just to make an entertaining pimped out blockbuster.. nonono, he declared to all citizens of Chinese descent he set his heart out to be true to the historical chronicles. He's poured his soul out for 10 years over this.

So I'll forever bear a grudge, and I'm not the only Chinese to say JW is a disgrace to HK cinema and our race.

On K movies: I met most of the K artists I like first on movies that I liked. and I started late, randomly watching those supplied by my college roomie.

Old boy is a must. I find PCW's subsequent works reiterations. I havent seen Thirst yet.
My first K movie ever was Christmas in August. It's my note to self that I can love a romance with terminal illness. And it has Han Suk-kyu and Shim Eun-ha.
Shiri
I liked JSA, that was my first LBH and LYA experience.
My first with MGY was My Little Bride. Delightful
Im Soo-Jung in Tales of 2 sisters
JDY was Happy End (very 18+)
JDG in Friend
LJJ and LMY in An Affair (again 18+)
JH in 3 Iron
KDW, JHS in Temptation of the Wolves
Cha In-Pyo in Mokpo Harbor
SYJ, JIS in Classic (but I love JIS in Dirty Carnival more)
Jang Jin-Yung (RIP) in Blue Swallow.

that's all my fond ones I can come up with top of my head...

It was totally a pimped-out blockbuster. That's why I enjoyed it. Eye candy and cool fight scenes. I went in with completely no expectations of historical accuracy (not that it would've made much difference, since I know virtually nothing of Chinese history) or epic story.
If This Belleza can enjoy Snoredeok and chicken-loving Bidam, then I can enjoy miserably failing at trying to demonstrate The Tortoise formation and its tactics. ;)

Ah...how could I have left out The Classic? I loved it for SYJ and Jo Seung Woo.
I need to watch Blue Swallow.

I know hjkomo has most likely seen this already, but I need to discuss a few aspects of the Chuno photoshoot (great use of background song, BTW):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64uU6QleQi4

1. The producers know how utterly ripped some of the main male leads are, and are completely shameless in promoting that. I counted numerous closeups of only the abdominal regions of various men. I applaud such open honesty - Chunojammas for more abs!

2. When JH and OJI cross-swords and stare at each other intensely - who else gets a total homoerotic vibe from them. I sense LDH becomes the third wheel.

3. It always cracks me up with actors are in sageuk character and then grant an interview on set.

My three Chuno-related thoughts for the day, or until I get the urge to think some more.

There's another BTS clip, where JH says the director told them to become 300 (as in the movie - in training, get those Spartan abs). I guess its good to listen to the director. ;)

Chunojummas for more abs! :D

Anyone find out what that song is yet?

@ hjkomo

I have been confused since the beginning of the Chuno-mania - why are JH and his bunch of merry 300 men half naked ALL the time (once they become slave hunters, of course)?

Can they not afford proper attire? Is it the official attire of a slave hunter, a la the official attire of a Spartan warrior is underwear and cape? What about when it gets cold, do they whip out the winter wear that has only some torn holes instead of more holes than shirt? Is it a better way to catch slaves, i.e. stun them with their magnificent abs and capture them?

Is this historically accurate (feverishly paging through my new Korean history book for section on scantily-clad slave hunters of the Chosun era)?

Eh, I give up, dress like the Korean version of 300 for all I care. Just bring the pathos come Jan 6. Who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth.

The song is from will.i.am called A New Day (which I like better than anything from the Black-Eyed Peas).

@langdon813
Friend: I am debating whether to watch the movie or drama first. I thought that it would be appropriate to pay homage and watch the movie but many people seem to really enjoy the drama so...
And the other movies I've heard of. JB wrote a review/synopsis of Frozen Flower, correct? I read that. So that is definitely on the list. As for GBW, I'm pretty sure I've read the raves from you and others so I am missing something pretty great by passing that up. Rough Cut I've been meaning to get around to but I watched My GF's a Secret Agent and Cain and Abel instead :) Old Boy: The YB reference actually made me want to see this movie. I heard alot of talk about it. What is the synopsis?

@ockoala
"I also want to add Lee Byung-hun’s A Bittersweet Life."
Hmm. Ok. I'll check on that immediately. When I watched Addicted, I had no idea who he was. Now, I'll be watching his works with knowledgeable (albeit fangirl) eyes.

@hjkomo
Addicted: I'm glad someone else liked it.
My Sassy Girl: No you are not. I watched the movie because it seemed insanely popular but nope...didn't like it at all actually. It was predictable and not that enjoyable to me. The one benefit is the references that I get in dramas being that I've seen it.

Re: region free player
Does that mean that if I purchase the Limited Edition( Region 3 Korean) of certain drama from yesAsia, then it will play with (legit) Eng subtitles for me to enjoy?

Yes.

Here's the process for you, broken down:

1. Buy a region-free DVD player. It will allow the playing of DVDs, no matter where they were produced. This includes the playing of Korean DVDs from boxsets that were only produced for the Korean audience in Korea, which are encoded for Region 3.

2. Look to see if a certain authentic drama boxset even exists for purchase. Check all the usual sites, including, but not limited to:

dvdasian.com, dvdpacific.com, hanbooks.com, music-plaza.com, seoulselection.com, scarecrow.com, yesasia.com

3. Find the drama you are looking for.

4. See if the drama has English subtitles.

***

So, assuming you have a region-free DVD player, let's see it in action:

1. HGD. Look for HGD in the usual sites.... not in this store, not in that store, hmm, ok, i found it, in hanbooks.com. Price $107.79 + $5.99 S/H. Does it have English subtitles? Yes. Great! All set.

2. ROI (return of iljimae). Look for ROI in the usual sites... bleh, not here, not there, not here...wow...this one is a toughie.... okay, i found it. in aladdinus.com (korean website http://dvd.aladdin.co.kr/shop/wproduct.aspx?ISBN=9263816654). Price $104.21 + S/H. Does it have English subtitles? Bleh..... No... dubbing is in Korean only. Boooooo! (더빙 - 한국어)

3. Painter of the Wind. Look for PotW in the usual sites... bam, found it on the first try at seoulselection.com. Price $78.16 + S/H. Does it have English subs? Yes.

etc.

Happy to hear. Hiro has another one Zettai Kareshi/Absolute boyfriend. He's gorgeous in it. Another submissive male role.

Old boy( instead of Langdon, here, we haven't seen her yet):
With no clue how he came to be imprisoned, drugged and tortured for 15 years -- and no one to hold accountable for his suffering -- a desperate businessman seeks revenge on his captors, relying on assistance from a friendly waitress. Korean director Chan Wook Park -- a former philosophy student and Hitchcock devotee -- uses his influences to create a mesmerizing psychological drama with a resolution that will leave you speechless.

I just copy/pasted from Netflix site. The thing is you don't want to know more than this for now.Experience an optional alternate reality watching it.

What I suggest is that you apply for and obtain a credit card that you would use ONLY FOR international (or eBay or online) purchases. Here's the key: I would ask for a strict limit on the credit card of only $250 that cannot be changed without written authorization from you, so that there is no way that ppl could use that credit card number to buy thousands of dollars worth of stuff.

Then, use that credit card for all DVD purchases and online stuff. That way, if your CC information is hacked and stolen, if you need to cancel the card and get a new number, it won't affect your life in other ways, like your automatic monthly pays, etc.

I second and third samsooki's advice on CC #s and international websites.

I've gotten my CC stolen also twice in the last 3 years, and both times are after I've purchased something online from either an international site or a less than reputable domestic site (bam, a few hours later, my CC company calls in a tizzy and asks me if I bought X dollars worth in Shannon, Ireland or whether I just splurged for a wedding dress in Beirut - and I go *&^%$%&^**^&%%$ NOT AGAIN!!!).

My sister also just had the same time happen, and it happened within hours after she bought the Tamra OST from a certain site we mention frequently, and I leave the implication at that.

Instead of using a designated CC, I've instead opted to only buy from sites that accept Paypal (including all vendors on eBay, many of whom do in fact sell official DVDs, and you'll have to read through the fine print to ascertain its authenticity).

Final word: never give out your CC # unless absolutely necessary/life-or-death situation - i.e. I must own a pig-rabbit otherwise my life as I know it will be left with a giant gaping hole.

Unfortunately, using Paypal is no guarantee either. Two weeks ago, my Paypal account was hacked and someone purchased $150 worth of something or other from a virtual gaming world zynga or something like that. Obviously, I closed down my Paypal account, I cancelled the card associated with the Paypal account as well. What is interesting is that my only uses for Paypal within the last year were to make grateful donations to WITHS2 and aja-aja.com.... sigh. (I hope this story doesn't deter people from donating to them though!!!)

Paypal investigated and returned the $150 within a couple of days, but I'm not sure if I will use Paypal again until I get an extremely limited credit card that I would only use for internet / international purchases, and link it to that card.

Really?? OMG. Thanks for sharing what happened to you (my condolences to your poor paypal and CC account).

This is the first time I've heard a firsthand account of a Paypal account being hacked, I guess I put too much stock into the security of the Paypal system. I shall be more careful, and just endeavor not to shop so much online, which I am wont to do. This also is a wake up call to be viligent, nothing is as safe and secure as I hope it to be.

I think I'm going to adopt your suggested method, it sounds like the least stressful option.

[scurrying off to check my Paypal account for suspicious transactions]

AH! All these horror stories had me in a bit of a frenzy. I've actually made a few donations and bought a few things *coughs pig-rabbit* from overseas sites lately with/out Paypal. I just checked and things are fine now but this has definitely lit a caution sign in my brain and pocket regarding online purchases.
Thank you both.

"Am I the only one who didn’t like My Sassy Girl?!"

Nope. I actually hate romance comedy movies like this though I'll qualify and say I liked "My tutor Friend". I hated "Windstruck" and "Daisey" even more though I barely remember them--I've purged them from my brain.

@nea:notoriousnoona
"Old Boy: The YB reference actually made me want to see this movie. I heard alot of talk about it. What is the synopsis?"

one word revenge.
-------
Movies I like. I think mookie and I have similar taste

1. Shiri
2. JSA
3. Old Boy
4. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (my favorite of the revenge series)
5. I'm a cyborg but its ok
6. Tale of 2 sisters
4. Ing... (I've actually cried and they weren't crocodile's tears)
5. Happy End
6. You Are My Sunshine
7. Secret Sunshine
8. Untold Scandal
9. An Affair
10. 3 Iron
11. Family Ties
12. My Family
13. Quiet Family (I think its the funniest korean film I've seen)
14. The host (like Epik High's Wannabe MV and some great all star cast)
15. My Tutor Friend (fluffy and fun. KSW and LHN chemistry is good)
16. My Wife is is a Gangster
17. Hi, Dharma
18. Chunhyang
19. Art Museum by the Zoo
20. Christmas in August

On my list but still haven't seen
1. Chaser
2. The Good, the Bad, The Weird
3. The king and the clown
4. A Bittersweet Life
5. Spring, Summer, Autumn,..
6. Musa
7. The Isle

Didn't like
1. Frozen Flower (Jo In Sung's acting ahh!!!)
2. doremifasolasido (just saw last night. I wanted to be deaf and blind..the agony)
3. 200 lb. Beauty (singing good, premise kind of interesting, and Jo Jin Moo!! but maybe the message is problematic for me to enjoy as just fluff)
4. A Millionair's First Love (Acting, plot, directing, editing. What didn't go wrong!)
5. Madeline (boring flat acting, corny directing, should be called My Sassy girl 2)
6. April Snow (what a bore. BYJ doesn't the have the range to do this but he always picks his leading ladies well)
7. Love So Divine (who would buy KSW as a priest. Characters have no depth and everything is a plot device.)
8. any movie with Jun Ji Hyun
9. anything with "boyfriend", "cool", "arrogant" or "mr. perfect" in the title

I use paypal as well and used it to donate to Viikki and subbing teams. I've also bought the YB OST recently from *cough* site. Very alarming. Do we live like kdrama hermits and not donate or buy anything or do we put our collective heads and create a side business selling kdrama stuff and of course pig-rabbit.

@nycgrl,

seriously your fav list is 90% identical to mine. With my considerable hate of KSW, I did enjoy Tutor Friend (KHN in anything else *esp ONAIR* bleehh). Nodding with your dislike list as well, but I did like doremifasolasido, was fresh off my grief over YH @ HJI that's y. My list was personal, it's my first memorable 'dates' with these artists, some went on knocking my socks off some more ( JDY in Milyang).
I still can't connect with KRW because my very first movie of him was Peach Blossom (zzzzzz) and I followed suit with LSiH (at his lousiest?! I dunno...)

@nea on whether to watch Friend the movie or drama first.

It's a rare case that I don't think it matters in dulling either experiences AT ALL. PD Kwak was brilliant in giving us 2 companion pieces of identical materials taking full advantage of the medium. We may have our preference, but that doesn't shadow the other. And yeah, even if binnie decides to stick with acting till a wrinkly old age, this performance will be on his best list forever. My suggestion, be a purist and watch the movie first, it's just ~2 hours, the drama was carefully designed along the thread that 100% of the K audience watching it would have indelible scenes and lines branded already. It actually added to my 'enjoyment' (I'm not comfy using that word in association w/ Friend).

@ ockoala
"I have been confused since the beginning of the Chuno-mania – why are JH and his bunch of merry 300 men half naked ALL the time (once they become slave hunters, of course)?
Who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth."

ROFL!!!
One thing that sparks my curiosity is that Oh Ji Ho's abs are noticeably absent from the stills and teasers. Why so, PD Kwak Jung Hwan? Is it merely because he's a runaway slave and not a slave hunter? Isn't he 300 enough to shed some of that too-heavy attire that may be slowing him down while on the run?...at least, one would think so, with all that baseball practice he's been getting. Come on, OJH...this is your chance to step up to the plate. :P

Well, if not, I'm perfectly satisfied with staring at Jang Hyuk and Han Jung Soo's abs. ;)

Oh, about the new teaser...imo, it looks Hye Won (LDH) is going to think Dae Gil is dead, and yet she can't seem to forget him. OTP, FTW! :D
Hurry up and watch Robbers!

@ Samsooki

Han Ga In certainly could've yelled out, "OPPA, MANSE!" like she meant it, but then...
that wouldn't have been Han Ga In, would it? ;)

@ nycgrl

Yeah, My Sassy Girl was annoying.
I haven't watched Winstruck, but I enjoyed Daisy for its action (not a romantic comedy at all) and Jung Woo Sung & Lee Sung Jae's acting.

@hjkomo,

Han Ga In certainly could’ve yelled out, “OPPA, MANSE!” like she meant it, but then… that wouldn’t have been Han Ga In, would it.

Wow.....that's the most perfect response ever. That's revolutionary almost.

You just gave the quantum mechanics answer to korean dramas. By extrapolating what would happen if HGI actually opens her mouth and speaks in a loud enough voice, we can see by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle that she would actually change right before our eyes into... Nam Sang Mi. To keep from changing into NSM, obviously, she must keep her voice meek, her arms close to her body, and her face as non-threatening and as cute as a button.

@nycgrl -

I would move up the list "My Wife Is A Gangster," and also include My Wife Is A Gangster 2, due to the impressive fight scenes along with the cameo appearance of an extremely hot Zhang Ziyi at the end.

Just came back from H*ll, I meant the post office. Ok, God, I was a good girl and mailed my present to Mom on time.
You guys are scaring the jeebies out of me regarding cc online. I just bought something online...should I be worried now? Maybe I will just go to LA Koreantown, again and just buy the region free player and the region 3 DVD's in person. The one that I usually go to is in Galleria ( Choi's Music, etc)...so far the owner was kind and accommodating to me( I was a pain- trying to find OST etc, and didn't have the Korean name of the drama..oops). Anyway, I usually keep the transactions in cash. ( I had an identity theft about 15yr ago- someone tried to withdraw, to the penny, the whole checking account of my clinic. The joke's on the thief since that account's traffic is high( out's faster than in's). I closed that account, but someone else tried to repeat the same stint 3 years later. I got mad at BOA when they called and asked me if I will authorize a withdrawal. I reminded the cust. service gal- THE ACCOUNT HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR 3 YEARS- so NOOOOOOO.

Gee...things that we need to do to satisfy our kdrama addictions....I voted that JB or @Samsooki be our authorized DVD/OST CD dealers. I trust you guys with my credit cards ;)

The PD of Chuno may be purposely saving the best for last, and trust me when I say I do love Jang Hyuk more than Oh Ji-ho, and JH's body is absolutely rock hard, but OJH's musculature is......omo omo, my mouth is dry (the first episode of Fantasy Couple and my jaw dropped to the floor and I said "Who *is* this man?" - he can't act much but he sure can take off his clothes like a consummate professional actor).

That PD is just waiting for that right moment to have OJH rip off his shirt in Chuno and then it's on like donkey kong - at least it's like that in my fantasy. :-P

Sorry to bother you, but I have a question-
I found PoTW in yesAsia - it's "Normal Edition" Region 3 with Eng Sub.- what is "normal" vs "limited"?? You've mentioned that the authentic one is labeled as "Limited Edition". This Normal edition goes for $72.. Please reply with your advise to such matter. Thank you

" Korean director Chan Wook Park — a former philosophy student and Hitchcock devotee — uses his influences to create a mesmerizing psychological drama with a resolution that will leave you speechless."

But the thing is, Oldboy was a Japanese seinen manga. I still feel Chan Wook Park is a better writer than he is a director (I can hear the musos go but-but-but, but most of them haven't seriously watched the true extreme stylists like Takashi Mike) . . . his black, black sense of humor always makes most of his films wonderfully nasty experiences/

@Samsooki
I just finished "shopping" in hanbooks.com...he he ;) 'picked up a lot of DVD" but have not push "check out" because 1) never bought any thing from them and the creepy experience I had mentioned earlier; 2) I think my ever so patient Hubby might have an aneurysm if he saw the total ( I need him to buy a toy first, and then he would ask me out of guilt if I wanted anything...THEN I will process the purchase ;)
I think my biggest concern is that even if I purchase these DVD's with my "special" cc as you have recommended ( an brillant idea, btw), I still have some hesistations to use these sites unless you or someone else have used them successfully ( ie the DVD's are authentic, no poor video etc). So, if you had good experience with the sites( my second choice is seoulselection.com since they have some DVD's that I have been hunting for ) that you have mentioned, please let me know. Thanks .
