City Hunter confirms casting Park Min-young

The news was hinted recently, and now it’s confirmed: Park Min-young will play the lead in the City Hunter adaptation starring Lee Min-ho.

Ehh, I wasn’t enthusiastic about the prospect of Park in the Kaori role before, but it seems the new adaptation will have a number of differences with the original, so there’s probably no point in hoping for faithfulness to the original. Park’s character is named Kim Nana, and is a Blue House (presidential residence) bodyguard.

After Nana loses her parents in a car accident, she supports herself through a number of diverse odd jobs, which includes a background in judo. After struggling, she ends up at the Blue House, where she meets a member of the international communications network team (and MIT grad), Lee Yoon-sung (Lee Min-ho), and they begin a bickering-filled courtship.

Well, they sure have cleaned up and gentrified the setting, haven’t they? What happened to Ryo being a lascivious womanizer? That was practically the heart of the franchise, along with the PI angle. It sounds a lot less like the original material and a lot more like Rivals (Strong Opponents) redux. Can they even call it City Hunter with that premise?

Oh well. I would’ve loved to see Im Joo-eun or Seo Hyo-rim in the Kaori-inspired role, but it doesn’t really matter anymore. City Hunter premieres on SBS on May 25.

I'm totally in. I don't know if there will be any chemistry in the pairing but I love PMY in SKK and of course LMH in all of his dramas. I'm definitely giving this a chance!

I am totally in. Min Young was my fav in SKKS. So would love to watch her again. Lee Min Ho n Min Young did look good together in their scenes together in 'I am Sam'. Min Ho was funny as the flirt there. Let's see how they do more grown up selves. However I hope the characters r well drawn despite the changes. Hate nothing more than a weak female character! Min Young, fighting!!!

hmm... while this information doesn't seem to fit what I know/ have heard of the original City Hunter, it could just be the setup. They could take it from the Blue House to the underworld via corrupt politicians, taking down crime lords threatening the presidency, that sort of thing. And, Lee Minho could still be a womanizer (drama gods, please?), and "Kaori" could still be a tough girl. Like JB's original theory, it could be a City Hunter Origins type thing. I think I'll try the first couple of episodes and see what's up.

I'm not gravely opposed to Park Min-Young's casting - I think she's a decent actress - but, if she is going to be a tough girl, I would suggest a new hairstyle - something short, layered and badass like Kim Soyeon's for IRIS/Athena or Shin Se Kyung's for Blue Salt (when is that coming out by the way?).

thank you jb.

The same expressions in tmwcgm and also in her last

daily drama, the voice not powerful, has no high or low pitch sound, always mono.

She is beautiful but it doesn't help in the other depts.

As for Seo Woo, she always surprises us.

Hrrmmm..... Well of Course I am going watch this Drama! Lee Min Ho is the only reason I actually even watch Korean Dramas!!!
I wasn't a fan at all of Park Min Young being the love interest, but now that I know her character is going to be a bodyguard in the blue house, well thats just pretty badass! Lol.
I have been dreading Min Ho playing a womanizer, now that I know the plot of the Drama a little more, I'm kinda looking forward to it, maybe he still will be a womanizer, just not as hardcore as the Manga character was. So, I'm pretty relieved....

Aw, I wish Moon Geun Young could've gotten the role. Now how awesome would that be.

For some reason, Park Min Young never did it for me. There was something about her that just made me annoyed. Maybe just because I'm prejudice about her.

I'll watch one episode because of Lee Min Ho and see if it catches my attention.

I always enjoy how people debate tru their own comments here. And why do I love this blog so much?
Because every JB's opinion is always same with mine.
Ugh. PMY. And the story just make me disappointed. Meh. I'm out.
Trying to wait other upcoming dramas.

I'm not only upset with Park Min Young being cast but also because they probably changed the character of Kaori just to fit for PMY?? UGH.

This is just horrible casting and the story doesn't even sound like City Hunter anymore. Maybe I should hope that a japanese version more loyal to the original work would be made.
And because the project doesn't even sound like City Hunter they should just say loosely based on the japanese manga City Hunter.

I like her, she pretty, cute and was good in SKKS.

But what fans don't get is that the original character didn't fit her, that is why we are complaining about her being cast, it is not because we hate her.

Plus this drama likely casted her just to be another-same-thing-again idol drama.

Yes some of you are pretty shallow and like the fact of her being casted because she is 'cute' because she is 'beautiful' so that is pretty sad that as long the main actress is 'pretty' or 'cute' you would all be glad.

This I call Thick-headed people or crazy fangirl.

Maybe she will do a good job now, but not because she fits the character and we was wrong about her, it is because they changed the original role just to fit her, so of course they won't do something she can't pull off.

I'm upset because they do this. Idol drama are really shallow. Just DH that has changing my mind lately. It has idols, but has a good writing, so this make up for the lack of acting it has.

You who don't get why we are so disappointed is because you just care for the actors, and probaly doesn't even know how 'city hunter' story is. So of course when your cute and pretty actress is casted you would be happy, but us that care about writing, about the story doesn't. Because some of us were going to watch city hunter because of it's original story not because of the cast. But now they changed a lot the story and that disappointed us, why can't we complain? Why can't we be disappointed?

Want a good example about what I just said?

Who of you who watch idol drama know the great drama 'Sign' that is airing? This I should say it's a AMAZING drama and is a pity isn't very well popular here. (In korea it is because it has concrete ratings.) This is a example of a good drama, with great acting and great plot, but of course most of you don't watch it, because the actors aren't what you call pretty and aren't young also no idol. So of course you miss it to watch some crappy of idol drama.

Well said, Liz. Very well said. Now don't get me wrong, I like PMY in SKKS. And OK this drama might turn out great after all, but still, it won't be City Hunter anymore. Better they change the title and said it's just loosely based rather than makes lots of manga fans sad. I'm one of City Hunter manga fan. That manga was an important part of my school days. Reading the much-changing plot here makes me very sad.

People watch dramas for different reasons and thus they choose different dramas. We'll also have differing opinions on whether a drama deserves the high or low ratings that it gets. Sign is getting pretty good ratings in Korea so there are people watching. And I also think that some dramas that are labeled "idol dramas" don't always fit into that category. They're not always "crappy" either.

It took me a few days to get used to this casting. I was neutral about PMY in SKKS and felt she was overpowered by the guys in acting skills, looks, and charisma. Although this may happen again, I'll still give this a try. As for staying true to the original manhwa, does this happen much? They should just start saying "loosely based on XXX" instead and save everyone the disappointment .

I thought PMY did well in SKKS and I quite enjoyed her portrayal anyway.

The casting could've been much much worse and remember what happened the last time EVERYONE seemed to have unanimous glee about a drama's casting *coughMSOANcough*???

Anyone who's declared they're not watching coz she's in it, well too bad, this drama might, and i repeat, might be very good after all(who knows?) and you bailed out because of her, which is not so bad to begin with?? Well, prejudice much is all im sayin'

Still... I guess now anyone who defends PMY is gonna be public enemy here huh??

Gee..I thought LMH was going to be edgy in his role as a PI with womanizer tendencies and show some of his acting chops. It sounded interesting and imaginative, but I guess it's not the case. MEH..MEH..MEH.. How I hate this.

Such a shift of LMH's character as well as RYO's character.
I thought we would get a stronger actress who would kick ass. PMY doing judo? They have changed it entirely. Can they call it City Hunter? They have watered it down so much.

Never was impressed with PMY acting ability in SKKS.
I will watch City Hunter because I love LMH, but it sounds like a BIG BORE.......Phooey...

Actually, the casting of the two main actors seems nice and the plotline seems servicable too. I, of course, will watch this (LMH... romcom... what else needs to be said).

If only they didn't state it as being 'cityhunter'....

Under any other name, alot of us would be estatic for another romcom with LMH for us to watch. It was a mistake to raise hopes of a korean version of the cityhunter manga/anime if they were not going to be remotely faithful to the characters/ story.

If instead of Pmy it were Psh i would be happy....i like their chemestry in all those make up commercials XD....i know it's mainly fangirling, but i can't help it. Besides, i feel that she's not doing anything important...i mean Hayate is not going to help her improve her acting or her popularity, so this might have been a good opportunity causei know she has the ability to portray this kind of character.

Well, Lee Min Ho will be my reason for watching and Pmy could become one later...

Yehey! Park Min Young in another kdrama...and with Lee Minho, too! :-) Good for them.

I love her work in SKKS and feel she should be given more projects where she can shine and further improve her craft.

Im not exactly enthralled with LMH (I know! Im a very very few and lonely minority) but I see that his acting keeps on improving each time based on the few scenes I was able to see from PT, and he looks like a good kid who can deliver more if given the chance.

However, I read some of the comments here and apparently many feel that she is not a perfect-fit for the role in City Hunter.

Im not a manga/manhwa follower so Im not in a position to comment on this. But I understand that if its a literary work that I really love, I hope that when it is translated to another medium it will retain its integrity to the original form/intention.

I think this is a sad commentary on the industry if the kdrama version will just be loosely based on the original work. H/ever we must understand that this cannot be done without the clear permission from the author. It would seem that since we see the news of this project coming through with the story changes and castings, it would appear that the author consented/permitted the changes and said actors to be cast. If the author him/herself did not see a problem with it then let's all hope the show will come out better than we expected, this is for the fans who want to keep to the original story/for better fit actors to be casted.

I think that if we give it a chance and they make a good show eventually it will also help the author whom we love for his/her original work.

My suggestion to the producers: change the title of this show and just state "partly based on City Hunter" or "inspired by the story City Hunter" or such wordings to give its new show more credibility and to remove the stigma and bad vibes because of the indignant reaction and violent outrage from well-meaning fans. :-) How about "Urban Hunter"? :-)

For me, it is not personal. My reasons are I am disappointed that they change the story to suit her after teasing us for months that the drama is based on the manga "City Hunter", and from SKKS , she is not that good of an actress--the boys outacted her. I just feel LMH acting chops is on a different level from her.

I am also not exactly enthralled with LMH. I hated his character in BOF but liked his acting n liked his character in PT but felt he was a bit wooden, esp. in d last few episodes.

So, I will be watching this for Min Young. Of course everybody has a view on how actors perform n all that. But I absolutely loved the way Min Young played Kim Yoon Hee in SKKS. I feel that part of the reason why people tend to dismiss her acting in SKKS is also bcoz the character was a good girl type (some might say, boring!). Joong Ki n Ah In's 'characters' were especially striking when compared to hers n so their acting also gets better appreciated bcoz of this. But I felt she was the soul of the drama. There was not even one moment when I felt she was out of character. In 'I am Sam', I did not find any trace of Yoon Hee. She is a better actress than most people give her credit for.

However, I hope she gets to do a different kind of role, something that requires some overstatement. At the end of the day, however good an actress, unless the character is well drawn, it becomes an impossible job to convince the viewer. Saw it with Moon Geun Young in 'Marry Me, Mary' n even Yoon Eun Hye was not her best in 'My Fair Lady'. So hope Min Young's character in 'City Hunter' does not disappoint me. The same goes for LMH.

City Hunter may or may not work as a drama. But it won't be because of the actress alone. Anyway, I think it too simplistic to believe that the City Hunter team would change the whole script of a popular manga and face the ire of so many die-hard fans coz they wanted PMY as the actress.

First off.......

I didn't know anything about "City Hunter."
OK, now I know that it's based on a famous,
very well-loved Japanese comic book series.
Obviously, these characters are carved in
stone......age, personal qualities, looks, storyline.

#1. Lee Min-ho agrees to play the lead, although
everyone goes ballistic because he's ten years
too young for the role, as originally written.

#2. The Japanese author approves of LMH's
being cast, possibly forgetting what he originally
wrote about the lead actor's age.

#3. The producers announce, with LMH as the
only confirmed actor, that this series will begin
airing in May, with the usual, frantic race to film
episodes in time for broadcasting, beginning in
March.

#4.THEN....A WELL-KNOWN SCRIPT WRITER IS HIRED.

#5. According to people who know the storyline,
the choice of the leading lady doesn't "fit" the
written charactor any more than LMH does, so it
can't/shouldn't be called "City Hunter" anymore.

#6. People are divided on not watching this series
because it isn't CH, watching it only because of
Lee Min Ho, or hoping against hope that it won't
end up being as terrible as they fear it will be.

Are the inmates running the asylum, or is Korean
TV adaptions of stories from other countries always
so cockeyed? (I'm much too dignified and refined
to say that the above numbered sequence of
events is totally @$$ backwards.)

Somebody wanna' 'splain to me, what's going
on here? :(

hi there..birdie but for me its not the big deal though, for me PMY is a versatile actress,.she can act better than anyone else and in the story sometimes, if the story came from adaptation not all the storyline are thesame, they have diff. way of delivering the story, but they have something in common or the outcome is the same, because first they have diff. country diff.language diff.actors and actress and for me im not satisfied if the story is the same as the original, even in my country a lot of drama here are adaptation from korea but,not as the same but the story are looklike. anyway for me i cant wait to long for this drama.i love this 2 people.and they have chemistry they both hansome and beautiful.
