Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #2

girlfriday: And the birthday bash continues!

javabeans: As promised, we’re kicking off a new round of prizes, so if you didn’t win this time, you’ve got a brand new chance to try. Just please don’t break our site.

girlfriday: Yeah, who knew free stuff would bring this many people out of the woodwork?

javabeans: I know everyone likes free gifts, but it was surprising to see how much delurking resulted. Hello, lurkers! Say more stuff!

girlfriday: It’s a good thing we’re only doing this for one month, because if the prizes get bigger and bigger each time, we’d be giving away cars and spaceships, and before we know it, we’d have to close up shop.

javabeans: Wait, you’ll give them ideas! To clarify: We are NOT giving away cars. Or spaceships. Those are exclusively for personal use.

girlfriday: Spaceships are a pain to get licensed for anyway. Thanks to everyone for your birthday wishes and anniversary cheer! Without further ado, drumroll please…

Congratulations to the winners of our Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #1! The lucky three are:

Watching kdramas has enabled me to learn more about the Korean culture--I often feel I know more about Kpop idols than my actual Korean friends, which they are both annoyed and fascinated by!

I've made my friends fellow K-drama watchers and now they are just as engrossed as i am. Started eating and trying more Korean food. Pulled all nighters when watching last episodes or whole series. Increased my dvd collection with the purchasing of my favorite dramas. Searched and watched on multiple websites for dramas not streamed on main sites. Given up all hope of ever watching another American show again (just can't compete). Wrote down ideas for my own k-drama and try to figure out a way to break in to the biz. Become obbessed with your website...visit it atleast 3 times a day..no lie..you can check my web history on my computer.

Every time I see a korean restaurant, I get the urge to eat there. And I'm always recommending friends to try samgyupsal especially to those who haven't tried korean cuisine yet. Also, I can't go a week now without reading k-drama recaps or k-drama newsbits. It's like my day's not right/incomplete if I don't get my fill. And when I get hooked on a drama? It's madness I tell you! The long wait for the next episode is infuriating and frustrating, especially when the previous one ended with a killer cliffhanger. Alas, excellent k-dramas have a way turning even the most poised and intelligent of women into blubbering/giggling/squealing fangirls. And yet I wouldn't want it any other way. ^^

One of my favorite dramas is The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry. I loved it so much that i went out and bought some Makegoli, after of course first googling it! So now I bother the ajumma at my local Korean restaurant for soju and makegoli at least once a week and I LOVE kukktobi! My favorite. Yu-jin and Dong-Wook also started a Kimbap snacking habit! I buy all the ingredients and after Much trial and error I finally have it down. I even had to pick up my korean skills so the video store ajumma didnt look at me crazy every time i tried to tell her the name of a drama I wanted to find!.

Every since that fateful day when i stumbled upon You're Beautiful Korean Drama's have begun to consume my life! I even have a trip to korea planned for this summer!!!

Aaaahhhhh! <~ I'm excited hehe

I made kimchi! And many other Korean dishes.
I'm 17 & I'm not a fan of cooking, but I had to get some idea about the taste of Korean food.
Kdramas were also the gateway to my Kpop obsession, and my love for the Korean language.

1. Visiting Dramabeans way too many times a day.
2. Making Korean friends who went to my college.
3. Visiting Korean restaurant EVERYTIME I get the chance.
4. Stalking many many korean blogs and sites to read about celebrity news.
5. Checking out korean celebrities' profiles and their skin care tips, etc. *embarrassed - hangs head down in shame*
6. Learn a lot about converting, downloading, etc. which I would not have cared a teeny tiny bit if not for korean dramas.
7. Downloading dramas (which occasionally come with their fair share of viruses) and pictures of celebrities (esp. Yoon Eun Hye - it's almost embarrassing how many pictures I own).
8. Using korean celebrities' pictures as avatars, wallpaper, etc. for my fb account, laptop, phone...you name it!
9. Begging people from youtube to provide english subs for interviews, behind the scenes stuff, etc.
10. Using words like omo, oppa, kamsahamnida, annyeonghaseyo, etc.
11. Try to convert my close friends to watch korean dramas, who on the other hand are tempted to call intervention on my behalf.

Dramas quickly went from being a hobby to a part of my life. Like many other obsessed fans who've replied I started learning Korean bit by bit. I also tried making kimchi which as you might have guessed didn't turn out so well ^^ I also went to my first, and the state's only, kpop concert when the WonderGirls were touring, even though it meant getting a drink spilled on me from the upper level, and even though I'm not even a JYP fan it was awesome!

But my biggest obsessed move is probably starting a blog about Asian dramas and now trying to post more and more so I can make it part of my livelihood. I would have never imagined myself even wanting to watch Asian dramas six years back!

Like many here, I've taken up Korean lessons and devoured many a banchan or ssam, explored the world of Korean pop, indie, rock, and alt music, and annoyed the sh#t out of my colleagues (friends, OTOH, understand) trying to explain my fascination with Korean dramas and movies. I don't content myself to obsessing in the US; nope, I've taken it abroad!

A good friend and I traveled to Korea expressly because of our mutual love for K-dramas (and the fine figure of the Korean male as seen in said dramas ) and made it a point to stay in a hanok just so we could fully get the Joseon experience. We traveled to the DMZ and were shepherded around by a cute Korean private who watched us like a hawk and never cracked a smile just so that we could experience (and maybe spot?) the Korean males' military service world. We went all fangirly at the Asia Song Festival and at Lotte World Star Avenue. We made the pilgrimage to the Coffee Prince cafe and trod many a street familiar to drama lovers. But most of all, I talked our way into a private tour of MBC Studios! They don't give tours to this building, but a very kind gentleman (who turned out to be the VP of Documentaries) took pity on us and walked us up and down the many areas of production. We went on set during a filming, into the green room for one drama, into sound editing, stage building and props, watched an infomercial filming, and even went up to the radio studios floor! All the while I peppered the guy with questions which he graciously answered! It was the best. I was further emboldened the following year when I talked my way into an interview of Bobby Kim (who any drama/music lover worth their salt will know for his many lovely OST numbers) after a concert in Wonju City! (I now write drama reviews for Korean Quarterly too.)

But, my best obsessive/Korean fan moment is always yet to come! I look forward to more, new adventures this year.

- I have travelled to Korea and arranged my itinerary around kdrama locations. I surprised my travel companion when in Nami Island, I started singing along to 'Noreul Saranghe' (one of the songs from 'Coffee Prince') which was being played in one of the establishments. :)

- I watch live Korean channel even if they are not yet sub-titled and even if i have a limited understanding of Korean. :)

Someone my age shouldn't be this obsessed with asian drama. I started my own tumblr and twitter dedicated to my obsession. I stalk any/every blog that talks about asian drama or k/jpop. I started watching anime and reading manga!!! WTH? I have teenage daughters who shake their heads at me wondering why I spend all my free time glued to my laptop.

My fav playlist consists of OST from my favorite dramas and artists. My boss walks in and asks me why I am listening to music in another language. I tell him it brings back all the emotions I felt when watching the dramas. He shakes his head and walks out. I moved my monitors on my desk so no one can see me while I am watching my dramas online at work. I may just find myself fired for this!

I love Dramabeans. I check in daily and religiously read the recaps and year end reviews. You are directly responsible for my dependency. Thank you!

Because of Kdramas I started to learn Korean and I also tried some Korean foods (or at the restaurant they said they are Korean foods :D) Also in 49 days I saw Lee Yeo won to eat instant kimchi in cups and I was so happy that even in Hungary I can buy exactly the same instant kimchi. Because of Kdramas I listened some songs from Kpop than I became a fan of it as well. And also, I was very proud of myself when a Korean woman (a tourist) asked for help and I could help her and speak to her in Korean, she was very happy that someone from that far away and not a Korean can also speak her language.
However, my biggest dream that comes from Kdramas is I wish I can travel to South-Korea, or have a Korean good-looking boyfriend. No I just kidding. Only to visit Korea. Okay a boyfriend would be nice as well.
And I'm not American as you asked to write (Best wishes and Happy Anniversary from Hungary: Heidi, 18)

Watching K-dramas has definitely made me crave Korean food.

It has also led to several awkward interactions with a co-worker. I'm a plain vanilla American - 7/8 German/Austrian but all parts have been here for several hundred years. Basically Ms. Whitey Whiterson, and I grew up in Vermont, which was at the time the whitest state in the nation (I think Maine bumped us) so despite our school's earnest attempts to promote multi-culturalism I don't think I actually knew any Koreans until I went to college. One of my roommates was dating a Korean guy and that's how I ended up getting hooked on K-dramas.

However, in watching K-dramas sometimes questions come up about cultural references or things happen and I want/need to know if that's normal for Korea as a country or normal in K-drama-la-la-land. So, since I work with a Korean graduate student, I decided to ask him. Alas, the stereotype of science PhD students being socially awkward and not that into pop culture/fashion was a bit overly spot-on in this case (and he's been living here since he went to undergrad), so my questions about the zaniness of some of the fashions didn't go over so well. Luckily, a new Korean lab tech got hired by the lab next to mine and she is an actual K-drama fan! (Albeit one with no time to watch due to studying for the MCATs, so I actually end up getting her mother's impressions of shows instead) So now I can discuss cultural references and other things with her and the grad student has been let of the hook.

Lastly, I got one of my other co-workers to watch BOF and she thought that a friend of hers from college would like it so she got her friend to watch it. The friend watched it and liked it and got her sister to watch it - so now the three of us (co-worker's friend, co-worker's friend's sister and me) have loooong email conversations about what we're watching, what we think, what we want to watch next, etc. despite me having never met the two of them. But at least I found two fellow K-drama fans!

I've not only started to learn Korean, I'm actual going to pick up an move there. Watching dramas and movies, in particular Please Teach Me English, opened my eyes to the country and culture and I actually applied, and was accepted, as an English teacher in the public school system there. I shall be moving there in the next couple of months.

So for now I am a US resident, but that could change shortly.

i would have to say that kdramas have affected me on both an emotional and a physical level. yes, kdramas have introduced me to the korean culture. i catch myself slipping the occasional aigoo and omo. actually it's more than occasional. i also call my mom umma and my dad appa. they respond. haha. i find myself driving 20 minutes away to the nearest korean grocery store in new jersey to buy kimchi, kimbap, dukbokki, soju, etc. and kpop is a necessity to my music library. but on a more emotional level, kdramas got me to be open-minded about relationships because the person you find yourself hating the most when you initially meet can be the one you fall in love with. kdramas have also taught me to go for what i want. it hurts more knowing that something you wanted was right in front of you and you didn't try to get it than trying hard to get what you want and failing in the end. at least in the end, you can say you tried.

My friends and I created a new game of "Go Fish" with cards that have Korean actors and singers on them instead of numbers/shapes/colors. We play all the time, and every game ends up being a vicious battle in claiming our favorite stars. In addition, for the last two years I have held "Kdrama" nights with my friends where I cook TONS of Korean food and then we all sit around my large tea table in my basement to eat, drink tea, play "Go Fish," and watch Kdramas!

I started to adopt the “little” language things typically Korean: Michyeoganda, Chincha, Aish, Jeongmal (or the three at the same time!) I’m really trying to swear less in French (I live in Belgium) so instead I’m doing it in Korean: Nappeunnom, Nappeunnyeon, Michinnom, Kkojora. And at home we are like mianhae, gomawo, jeh-bahl, jalja. Every time that it’s possible for us to place a Korean word we do it! So sometimes when we used those words we seem like aliens among others…and we like it actually! Thanks dramaland!

I started trying Korean food (coz the food in Kdramas always look so yummylicious...) and fell in love with it. Now I'm a fan of kimchi and dakgalbi and ddukbokki and doenjang jjigae and.....

I started taking an interest to Kpop. And the rest was history. IU! K.Will! 2NE1!

I started watching Korean variety. 1N2D FTW! Seung Gi oppa! ;)

I travelled to Korea twice in 3 years. (And caught Lee Seung Gi's Hope Concert 2011! Yay!)

I started taking Korean lessons. And am currently at Elementary Level III. Keke. Enough to travel free & easy in Korea, but not enough to sustain a conversation with a native Korean.

I started checking Dramabeans 5 times a day. Love you, Dramabeans! Thank you Javabeans and girlfriday! :D

Since watching K-dramas, I've been trying to learn Korean! I've also made a lot of Korean friends which is great because we spazz over K-pop and dramas together. It's always interesting to discover another culture, and the Korean culture is so unique that it's been quite an adventure!

Things Kdrama have made me do (or okay, lead me to) :

- Listen to KPop
- Tune into K-variety shows
- Eat Korean food (to which all my family members go, "What the hell ARE you eating?!" because Korean food don't look anything like the stuff I grew up eating)
- Speak random Korean phrases haha

OMGGG I really hope I win the Dramafever oneeeeee!

Watching dramas, specifically, Cinderella's Sister and The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry, got me into drinking makgoelli. I had to try it--shaken and unshaken (like Da-jung in WWSWTM). Also, my computer desktop background features all the hot men of kdramas. The more dramas I watch, the new dudes I discover. Win-win.
