Dramabeans 5-Year Anniversary Giveaway #2

girlfriday: And the birthday bash continues!

javabeans: As promised, we’re kicking off a new round of prizes, so if you didn’t win this time, you’ve got a brand new chance to try. Just please don’t break our site.

girlfriday: Yeah, who knew free stuff would bring this many people out of the woodwork?

javabeans: I know everyone likes free gifts, but it was surprising to see how much delurking resulted. Hello, lurkers! Say more stuff!

girlfriday: It’s a good thing we’re only doing this for one month, because if the prizes get bigger and bigger each time, we’d be giving away cars and spaceships, and before we know it, we’d have to close up shop.

javabeans: Wait, you’ll give them ideas! To clarify: We are NOT giving away cars. Or spaceships. Those are exclusively for personal use.

girlfriday: Spaceships are a pain to get licensed for anyway. Thanks to everyone for your birthday wishes and anniversary cheer! Without further ado, drumroll please…

Well, I sure do eat a whole lot more ramyun than I used to. And I once attempted making those korean onion pancake things, but uh... that was unsuccessful.

I've also started dabbling in a little bit of kpop, but not enough to actually be knowledgeable about any of it. Just, you know, I like the kickass outfits and hairstyles that 2NE1 get to sport.

I find myself imagining all of my favorite American shows as k-dramas. The British shows, too. I watch too much TV.

Also, my computer moves a lot slower because the hard drive is filled to the brim with k-dramas that I don't have the heart to delete yet. Honestly, do I really need to keep The Vineyard Man? Seriously? Damn you, Oh Man Suk!

As I became a everyday kdrama watcher, and realized kdrama was not just a fad of my life, I realized this thing called ramyun kept popping up in every drama. One fine day, I check out the noodle section in the grocery store snd see that the store sells ramyun. Eating it makes me feel somehow closer to kdrama land and it has sort of become a ritual for me to eat a bowl of ramyun along with my current kdrama! :-)

I am obsessed like most people with Korean things and I have picked up the language for one; but to answer your question, recently I tried makkgoli. I almost NEVER drink - have never liked too but I HAD to drink this. I had tried Korean food before - my favorite being kimchi pancakes and fish cakes; but makkgoli was a whole new experience for me. I loved it! I think I might get another bottle for myself and maybe I can join yall in a drinking game! =P
*Here's to building a tolerance so I can graduate to soju and start drinking like a heart broken male lead* Gambai!

Watching kdramas had me starting eating more kimichi! The food always appear so appetizing in the drama I just want to have some. I remember in Coffee Prince when they were having Kimichi Fried Rice.. that fried rice looked so delicious I just wanted to have some. I haven't tried soju but I probably will soon. ahah

due to lack of worthwhile jdrama, i’ve switched to kdrama last year and, boy, what a rollercoaster ride my life has become…i’m a doctor but still i make the extra time to watch the latest kdrama (per DRAMABEANS recommendations, i must say. honestly. no crossed-fingers there). I only miss watching kdrama when I am 24-hour duty in the hospital. But i catch up real good the following day, even with lack of sleep. There is Dramabeans to help me with the chore…despite being a “newbie”, my fellow residents call me an “addict”… i have become a kdrama guru to them. i recommend dramas based on my critique as well as Dramabeans’. my parents are aghast on my new-found love. They can’t understand how i laugh, cry, curse, cheer while watching K drama… Try watching it yourself then….Kdrama has made me love korea… I began to teach myself Korean by downloading “talk to me in Korean” podcasts from iTunes. I am also learning how to write Hangul. TTMIK has a video on how to write the “letters”. Kdrama has also made me love KPOP because the OSTs are just awesome. Even if I don’t really understand what the song is about but the music and “feel” is simply just right for the selected scene… (sigh!) It made me love korean groups like Super Junior, Big Bang, 2ne1 to name a few. I must admit that I can sing to a number of their songs — and then some…I have to download the lyrics in romanized hangul for me to read it and sing it. It made me dine in a Korean Restaurant for the first time which has been in our city for at least 5 years. It made me start to eat “ramyun” (even if it is in a packet). It has made me want to wear a hanbok. The best thing is, I have filled up my 1T hard drive (which I bought early last year) with kdrama (downloaded althrougout 2011) — and more so that I have kdrama in my laptop (~300G). my ipod Touch (64G) is now filled with at least 30G of kdrama (without subtites though) and kpop. my playlists include K OST, KPOP, SUPER JUNIOR. In my Top 25 Most Played Songs, you can find Jejoong’s “I’ll Protect You”, JYJ’s “Found You”, Park Sang Woo’s “Saranghango, Saranghamnida”, Sung Si Kyung’s “You are My Spring”, Jo Hyun Jae’s “If I live for one more day”, Heo Gak’s “Don’t forget me”, Hyun Bin’s “that man”…These are my lullabies at night…(sigh) so much has happend because of Kdrama but I have no regrets. It is my oasis, my refuge, my R&R after long hours of work in the hospital. The funny thing is, I have yet to watch medical dramas. I prefer to watch non-medical kdramas to keep my mind off anything work-related to keep my sanity rooted, while my imagination runs away with the likes of Cha Seung Won, Hyun Bin, Jo Hyun Jae, etc, etc, etc…(blush! blush! — at my age, I’m actually blushing like a teenager again) (nyahahahaha!). Lastly, my love for kdrama led me to DRAMABEANS, which is, by far, my official “guidebook” (or “guideblog”) for anything related to korean entertainment. Everyday, next to facebook, I would open Dramabeans page in my second tab and read the latest entries. I love read the witty prattle, the honest-to-goodness critique, the informative banter in the recaps, the tactful and, yes, even tactless verdicts of most (if not all) kdrama’s on-air at the moment. (seriously!~) all in all, there is no room for regrets for this “addiction”. this Kdrama fever. I would, could and must wallow in this for years and years to come. I LOVE KDRAMA!\

Because of dramas, I started trying Korean food, and now I can't Imagine living without it!
My family hates the smell of kimchi, but I'd even use the smell as an air freshner! It's so tangy and full of aroma!
And I LOVE naengmyeon (did I spell it right?)!!! I serious get cravings for it. It's like my chocolate!
Korean bbq is BOMB. I save up and then go with my friends, and I eat and eat and eat all the way up to the 4th level of fullness!!
I come to my local Korean restaurant grinning super wide and l looking like I've just eaten some magical mushrooms, but I'm honestly just so happy to eat the delicious food of this culture!!

Quite a bit! I took Korean, and just recently took a trip to korea! I tried korean food, checked out (and got hooked on) kpop, and became fond of eating on the floor :D.

Honestly, because I became interested, I learned a lot about Korean linguistics, history and culture...I'm very happy for the accident that introduced me to kdramas! :)

Watching Korean dramas has led me to learn Korean, want to study abroad in Korea even though I am studying Chinese in college, and also appreciate the culture and food so much more!! I have a few Korean friends, and I now can understand them a bit better (language, culture, media. I very often now beg them to take me to Korean restaurants and malls that are around my area and even bother them about questions about the Korean language or culture. Some car rides back from a Korean restaurant I will just ask my friend to Korean names of everything around me, like tree, car, sky, etc. I'm sure that I have become quite an annoyance, however we have been friends since middle school so I think that she has accepted my eccentricities by now. Anyway Korean dramas have change my life to such an extent that I did not even realize it until I wrote this post!!
Thank you dramabeans, I honestly love you guys!!

Dear @javabeans & @girlfriday,
Hmmm," What new thing have you done in the name of K-drama?....Tell us about some way in which watching dramas has changed your everyday life."
Well, let's start with the easy stuff: I actually understand some Koreans now after the 30th drama's I've managed to see(hehe); I'm actually craving & making my own banchans(that was due to all those yummy food from Gourmet),but I think the most important change in my life is that due to my love of kdrama,I got a new "family".

It was the result of my new passion that I've made new friends...friends that I'm fortunate to actually meet in person....friends that I tried to keep in touch daily throughout the day,no matter how far they are & what time of the day...& yes, we still discuss abt the latest drama, our ILU's ...Yup,it all began with our love for kdrama

Korean drama make me like korean food. I go to korean church twice and I was so happy to be able to say kamsamnida or annyong haseyo to people that actually understand it.
It make me call my mom omma, my brother oppa, my cousin and my friend unnie.
I ponctuated some of my phrase by a arrata, arrata, I say anyo, or when I'm really upset I'm like " Aïch Aïgo aïgo aïgo".
When I went to LA I spend time at Koreatown, eat Korean pizza and watch the Korean channel on TV.
My familly and friend think I'm weird, but I show some drama to some of them and they become to understand. I'm going to korea next years.
And everytime they heard something related to Korea they're like " hey its your country!".

I started learning Korean on my own. I bought dictionaries and all that stuff that will help me learn. In school, whenever I hear Koreans talking, I can't stop my self from smiling. IDK. Haha. And there was also a time when I got to sit beside Koreans in a bus. Though I can't understand what they are saying, it just makes me happy. =))) It's also my dream to go to Korea once I pass the board exam. :D Also, two years ago, my doctor advised me to stop eating noodles. But I can't help it. I regularly buy ramyun in the supermarket =)) My addiction also lead me to kpop. Korean expressions are already part of my life. When I ask my friend if they knew this show or song, they would always ask, "Is that Korean?" They really know how addicted I am. :))

In the name of the K-drama Universe I have now:

Yes, I eat kimchi now even though I hated it. I changed how I held my chopsticks just cause I saw Jiwon from 1N2D holding it a different way. I bow to everyone as a sign of respect. I say "aigo" like an ajumma. I know more of Korean gossip than my home country. I know MORE Korean celebrities more than I would have thought. I can read Korean now (there will be a day where I can speak Korean fluently!). I SOOOOO want to travel to Korea. I buy my groceries at a Korean store. I say thank you in Korean to everybody. Before, I can't take it that I don't have TV in my own room, but now, as long as I have access to my internet so I could watch my Kdramas and variety shows, I'm set. K-drama has pretty much, taken over my life.

The End.

Truthfully, before realizing kdramas even existing I didn't really take note of koreans. Although, ever since i started i can distinguish when a stranger is talking korean to another and it feels weird to realize it when before I didn't even notice.
I must admit, kdramas have made me fall in love with kimchi and I really want to go visit Korea and learn to speak semi-fluent korean enough to have a conversation. More would be even better (;
Not only that, I seem to be more aware of korean guys

THERE ARE SEVEN THINGS I'VE DONE IN THE NAME OF K-DRAMAS :

1. I started to blog about it.
2. I forced myself to eat kimchi even though I can't stand the smell.
3. I learned to stalk! This one is kinda creepy but yes! I am now a certified online stalker of Korean celebrities, especially those that I love. *cough Lee Seung Gi* :)
4. I started to study Korean language.
5. I always go to our school's library only to research about Korean history and culture.
6. I am more of a silent type. Usually, when people tell something bad about me, I just ignore it. But nowadays, I become outspoken. I bash those people who belittle and cuss out K-dramas.
7. My room turned into a K-drama museum. I used the K-dramas posters I bought as wallpapers. :D

When I watched Kdrama,I'll spend my next 16 hours(for 16 eps drama) on my macbook screen. I always want to try korean food because the way they represent it in the drama is mouth watering. But it was hard to get good korean food in Indonesia. Then 1 years ago I study abroad to United states, and coincidentally my college is next to asian area. There are a lot of korean restaurant. So basically I spend my lunch time trying every korean restaurants on the street. The funny this is sometimes I went for Korean bbq for lunch and then after that I have to go to my class. So I was smelling like korean meat during my anthropology class (and it was hard to keep my eyes open because I was too full and anthro is boring).Kdrama also introduced me to kpop(even though I don't like the dance music,I love their ballad)

K-dramas introduced me to my future. When I first started watching K-dramas I was like they're so good, interesting, funny, cute, and twisted....I LOVE IT! After watching a few dramas I began paying attention more to the Korean language indicating words I recognized and understood. After a while since I have always been a natural language fanatic I started studying Korean in every way possible! I ate Korean food, I drank soju, I freaking love kimchi, and I started speaking more Korean as I kept meeting more. Now I am proud to say I plan on majoring in Korean in college and after college I plan to go to Korea for a couple of years and teach English as well as soak up more of the culture that I have so dearly fell in love with(:

Well there you have it!<3

Oh the things drama has changed in my life!
While I'm not the type to get super super addicted to a drama that I MUST WATCH UNTIL I SEE EVERYTHING type, I'll admit that dramas have influenced my life a lot. I feel like I eat Korean food a lot, and those yellow pickles? I didn't like them much before, but after I watched them eat it in countless Korean dramas with their jajangmyun? That's what I do too. I also developed an indescribable to braid my hair into traditional hairstyles and wear gorgeously vibrant hanboks and dance around like I saw them do in the saeguks (what I long to do the most is to sit down in a hanbok :P and have it pooof out around me :D). Also, I'm the only on in my family that can use the flat Korean style chopsticks that we got in a gift set from a friend; I find their weight comforting. I've also tried measuring out my spices and stuff with a long handled spoon like I saw in Dae Jang Geum.

Upon looking back.. it seems a lot of stuff is food related... LOL :)

Congratullations to the 1st Giveaway Winners!

Bummer about the spaceship prize but hey for a KDrama Fan the Dramabean Dream Team's prizes are right up there!

This is another good question. (BTW it would be interesting to see a graph of how similar our answers are-just kidding!)

Since becoming a KDrama Fan I have
1) started cooking Korean food as the dishes shown always make my mouth water-spicey rice cakes a favorite
2) visited drama film locations on the mainland and Jeju-my 1st was the tree lined avenue featured in Winter Sonata.
3) made certain Korean actors the screen saver on my phone and laptop-my friends ask me who my new boyfriend is every time I change the picture...
4) learnt a lot more Korean.
5) I have been crazy in my defense of a certain idol's acting-not telling who as I might be verbally hit again:)
6) marathoned dramas for the 1t time in my life.
7) become a preacher for KDrama to my girlfriends and have made friends with people simply due to our KDrama love-I have 1 friend coming to visit later this month-yeh:)
8) gone so far as make sure there is a good internet connection where I'll be if I'm staying away from home for more than a night.

Happy Anniversary!

I love this question. Ok, here we go. Ahem. Let me count the ways I (and my family) have been influenced by k-dramas....

1) We changed out our silverware for metal chopsticks and and long-handle spoons
2) Our refrigerator is filled with the plastic korean pitchers used for soju (or water)....it's filled with either coffee soju or yogurt soju.
3) On any given day we have spicy cold noodles, seasoned mung bean, spinach kimchi, cucumber kimchi, or pork bone soup in the fridge.
4) Had we lived in a cooler climate, my sister would be burying kimchi pots in our backyard. Her Christmas wishlist last year included a kimchi refrigerator and earthen pot.
3) We almost named our newest puppy 'Puchai' from city hunter.
4) Our other dog (we call her 'Nana' for short) is now referred to as Kim Nana.
5) I am determined to learn Korean so that I can watch dramas without subtitles and be able to read the directions on skin care bottles.
6) Most of our family conversations are spent talking about dramas - catching each other up on recent episodes someone may have missed, new recaps for dramas, or which dramas we should watch next.
7) The ringtones on our cellphones are soundtracks from Korean themes (I still have Secret Garden's cute text alert, my mom and sis have songs from Lie to Me). My workout music mix now includes tracks from 2NE1, Nu Abo, and DBSK.

I took Korean classes and I hope to be fluent enough to have a full on conversation with my best friend's Mom (cross your fingers Eunhee :D!!) without sounding spectacularly clueless.

I now love Korean Food with all my heart. It's a serious obsession of mine but i'm sad that there is only one Korean restaurant in the whole of Nairobi City that has variety.

My Drama Obsession has reached worrying heights. I literally dont sleep, eat or move till my pile of DVD's is done with. The hangover on the next day is a killer but Must.Know.What.Happens.Next.

Everyone i know is worried that I've finally gone nutters except my best friend who thinks i'm completely hysterical.

I have been to Korea and spent six glorious months in Busan and Itaewon. Sigh... Good times. My Korean Family there is convinced i was Korean in my other life...

As you can tell I am a resident of Nairobi Kenya.

Watching Kdramas has inspired me to write and share. I now regularly write about my thoughts and experience about a Kdrama I've seen which I post on my wall feed. I've even put up a group which I call the "Hallyu Lunch Club" composed of my good friends who all love Korean dramas and Korean food. We meet up every month to talk (and argue) about the Kdramas we've seen over a sumptuous serving of Korean lunch from a Korean resto we've just discovered. Kdramas has allowed me to appreciate the rich culture of a country other than mine and the experience has been so rewarding from the time I started watching Kdramas in 2004 to this very day.

I would have gone to Korea anyway (my boyfriend's half Korean and the trip was to visit his family), BUT I certainly would have gotten less out of the trip.

I had a little bit of trouble crossing roads there at first... I mean, I was fine, but the sheer amount of people getting hit by cars in dramas and music videos made me really apprehensive. It is really just the product of unimaginative, harried writers, but it honestly made me wonder if it was really a *thing.* People just got hit by cars all the time.

I ended up visiting his family friends at the polo club on Jeju Island- seeing a section of its inside as the set of Paradise Ranch ("I was there! Shim Changmin was there!" *screenshot, screenshot, screenshot*!) later got me more excited than the actual drama. Or going to places that were in dramas on Jeju... it wasn't so surprising to see elderly ladies diving and wrangling with squid, but still pretty jaw-dropping baller.

And has anyone else turned into a whacko K-drama proselytizer?

I caught myself the other day trying to get my own man to watch The Princess' Man, after finding success with my friends.

Then I realized before I even opened my mouth that it just wasn't going to work, since my main argument was basically "But PSH is so *dreeeeamy*. His hair is so DREEEEAMY. His voice is so..." and so on.

Thaaat wouldn't have caused problems.

So many things! Like learning Korean (echoing the love for Talk to Me in Korean), making trips out to Hmart, cooking kimchi fried rice/bibimbap/ddukboki, eating Shin ramen (initially because of Goong), starting an Asian pop culture blog with a heavy drama-focus, and (most embarrassingly), using typical exclamations (esp. "aish" and "ya"). To be fair, those sound a lot like noises my Hispanic family members make to express the same emotions, so saying them feels natural to me (unlike "omo" or "aigoo," for example).

On the flip side, I think k-dramas desensitize me to yelling.

I love Korean food, went to Seoul, stood in a 0.5km long queue to try out the best samyetang but missed the BBQ beef near Korean Folk Village because we have to catch the last bus back to Seoul (still reeling at the loss of opportunity!).

Now - I can make kimchi (it tastes better with a bit of ginseng in it) and samyetang (minus the solid iron(?) bowl they use in Korea, too heavy to carry back) and yeah, they are good according to my friends...:)

I chose to talk about food because food makes me happy! and this is only a tiny bit of what kdrama has done to my life!

* I’m not a resident neither Canada or USA.

Last year was the year I caught the k-drama fever. And also the year of my SAT’s (or vestibular – how they’re called in my country, Brazil). I was studying practically 8 hours a day, but still made time to feed my addiction. My mom first thought that it was very irresponsible – which it was – but i converted her too and brought her to the dark side.
Fortunately I passed, YAY! Thanks to countless sleepless nights – either watching the latest episode of my crack dramas or reviewing for the tests.
I’m in no way encouraging anyone to follow in my foot steps because this was not healthy! I’m getting all the sleep I want this year. Or at least that’s my new year’s resolution. It’s a bit hard when my k-drama to watch keeps getting bigger and my spare time keeps getting “smaller”.

I’m sorry for any mistakes in gramar or anything. English is not my first language. Also sorry for the long rant. There’s somethings we just need to get it out =D

Omg it has made me crazy for kpop, crave korean bbq all the time (my family actually loves it now), and I always try to visit my local H-mart. Lol. But most of all, I now have this burning desire in me to move there!! Oh, and let's not forget that I got my mom into it, and now she watches more than me and has a crazy obsession for Lee Min Ho ( or Jun-pyo as she calls him cause BOF was her first drama) =_=;
