Happy Friday, everyone! Was so excited to read the OT today to hear about your experiences at last night's Meetup. It sounds like it was a great time.

Not too much to report on the drama watching front for the week. I tried to pick up Ms. Kim's Million Dollar Quest, but thought it missed a golden opportunity for high comedy hijinks. Saw episode 7 of xxxHolic the other night and am not a big fan with how they are handling the spider arc (which I guess will also be the final arc since they are stretching it out for three episodes).

Otherwise I am still watching Gokusen 3 and King of Dramas. Gokusen 3 is extremely predictable, and unfortunately seems to be leaning on a repeat of most plot points from season one, but I hang in there for Yankumi. Love that character (but I'm always a sucker for idealists).

Six episodes into King of Dramas. Silly, fun, entertaining. I laughed so much when Kang Min insisted that he didn't like melodramas, but wanted to do one because it was more profitable. I have noticed that melos always seem to get the bigger budgets (or at least higher production quality). I'm never going to see dramas the same way again after this. :P

Hello!

Last week's dramas are done and dusted and am totally with what's playing now.

Just caught ep 1 of I Summon You, Gold! and liked it. Enjoyed seeing Han Ji-Hye in a different role from that brat she played in Scent of Summer. Don't let the weird name put you off giving it a try.

Caught the last episode of My Love, Madame Butterfly. Glad they wrapped it up OK but there were definite problems with the storyline in the latter half of the drama and that detracted from the enjoyment of the ending.

Watching Gu Family Book. Really enjoyed the 1st ep, thought the 2nd seemed a little less smooth and have low expectations of the rest. Hope to be proven wrong on the latter though. Fingers crossed:)

In You're The Best Lee Soon Shin I'm enjoying watching the interactions between the baker, Chun-woo ,Joon-ho and the sisters. Look forward to seeing how their relationships play out through the course of the drama.

Looking forward to seeing Wonderful Mama! which should be out this weekend mostly for Jeong Kyeo Woon but all the siblings look to be good for a laugh.

As always enjoying the recaps here. Thanks DB Team for all your hard work!

All the best for the weekend eveyone!

Hi everyone!

The Dramabeans meetup was great yesterday and though I didn't get to meet everyone I chat with on here it was still nice to see the faces of all the people who enjoy dramas! And Javabeans and Girlfriday and Gummimochi and Heads (all so puurrty!), too!

Right now I'm not watching anything, really. Just waiting for things to finish and keeping an eye on what peeps like and don't like so much. Oh, I am watching a jdrama.

MY BIRTHDAY IS TOMORROW! I turn 22. I hope it isn't as rainy tomorrow even though I don't have any plans. Hope everyone has a good Friday.

My first time posting on OT..
I am in L.A. so didn't get to go to the meetup last night in N.Y. but I was closely following the announcements and other posts about it. I was so excited this morning thinking that I would get to read a whole bunch about the event but surprisingly (and a little to my disappointment honestly) that there's very little updates/posts/pictures etc. . I gather it was a fun event from some of the posts in OT but was hoping for much more from DB and the folks who were there - as you know, this is sorta the debut event for DB.

Oh well...

Speaking for myself, I just got back home and will need to grab some food and unpack before I can think about finding my cable to upload the pictures. I didn't take a lot, too wrapped up in chatting with people. I think Javabeans, Girlfriday, HeadsNo2, and Gummimochi were like the bride at a wedding ... seeing spots from all the folks taking pictures of them. Someone will post pictures this week I am sure.

Happy OT, Beaners, what a Friday . . . I'm going to read everyone's dishing and attempt to join in the fun. I hope everyone had/has a stupendous week. Myself a whiskey and lemon tea and bed sound fabulous.

Thanks Julia. Just saw your photos. O wow, our DB crew sure look awesome. Thank you ladies. Is it JoAnne i espied out in one photo? Just trying to read through nametags. Was Jomo lurking near any of those photos? So lovely to see you all. I realised i may be around your age group in most of those photos. A real mix of crowd; what a wonderful DB world.

Thank you for sharing, Julia! I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to NYC. I still have fond, if fuzzy, memories of my first visit there - eating in a Korean restaurant, drinking soju, kimchi pancakes, drinking soju, bibimbap, all the interesting side dishes, did I mention drinking soju? It was unlike any alcohol I had tasted before. Granted, I was only 20 at the time (this was many, many years ago).

We had such a good dinner - it's not my first time having Korean or even having it in NYC, but it was my first time at that restaurant, and I thought it was quite tasty: We all had bibimbap (2 beef, 1 chicken) with galbi and kimchi pancake to share, plus bean sprout soup. Banchan was kimchi, sauteed beansprouts, and those yummy cucumber pickles with gochugara that I love. And LOTS of soju.

I am not currently watching any dramas. I think I will wait a few more weeks before starting Gu Family and Jang ok Jung.

I did watch the Rich Man, Poor Woman special and, for me, it was perfect. I have been wary of starting any new dramas so it was nice to have the chance to watch something I was already familiar with.

Currently Watching:
Running man- guaranteed for a good time
Orphan Black (BBC America)- it just started but I like it so far.

u should really give NINE a try if you're not currently watching any dramas. it's quite good! i enjoyed the first couple of episodes of gu family book as well . . . i was totally on the fence about what to watch. too many choices on mon-tue & i really was interested in all the dramas in that line up. but gu family book was solid so i'm sure you'll like it when you get around to watching it.

I second this!

I am located nowhere near NY so I had to miss out :(

On another note, TGIF! Off work and even though it is miserable outside, I am sitting cozy with my doctored hot chocolate.

Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend or start to the weekend!

Way late, but here I kept seeing xxxHOLiC being mentioned and thinking, "Hm, a lot of these people are watching the anime it seems."

...WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME THERE WAS A DRAMA AIRING RIGHT NOW? I love xxxHOLiC!

Now I know what I'm going to be doing this weekend.

Hi all,
This is just a general question about K-dramas from a fairly recent entrant to this strange, wonderful and very addicting world.
There are some things that I just do not understand and the one that I really really have not understood is the whole "oh you're an orphan! How sad! But you can't possibly be good enough for my son!" All the ajummas and the catty second leads are at their best over the fact the heroine is an orphan. The strongest examples that come to mind are "secret garden" and recently "My Daughter Seo Young". Is that just dramatics that some dramas indulge in ?

The answer to your question could be summarized in 2 words: Filial piety. Also, neo-confucianism.

This has puzzled me too!

I've only been watching KDramas for a year, and until 2 days ago had never even met a Korean, so any theories I have a pure guess work. That however is part of why I love watching KDramas ... to try to understand cultural differences (at least as displayed in dramas).

From what I understand, family means a lot more to Koreans than it does to me. It is not only the love children have for their parents, but a means for society position and job advancement. Their respect for ancestors includes ceremonies on death anniversaries. In Confusianism, the shame/crime of one family member could extend to punishment of a whole family. Marriage is not only about two people loving each other, but the joining of two families with the social obligations and wealth that might bring.

Therefore, someone who is an orphan and can bring no family standing and advantages would be a poor match for a spouse.

I'm Korean and I still learn things about my culture from the dramas! Haha ( I thought my parents were the only ones who stuffed their faces when eating lettuce wraps. Lol)

Typically, parents want their children to marry someone of the same social status (higher is welcomed, of course). But today that may not be a priority to many.

I'm still surprised at how adult children dutifully follow their parents' wishes when I watch the dramas. I'm talking adults in their 30's and 40's. It's all interesting to see.

“Wrong episode???? The recap says that they only show up once in episode 20… that’s when they are in the house.

Are you trying an unusual form of torture?”

The scene is not in the Dramafever file, they cut it out, that is why I can't fix the srt for the HANrel file using DF subtitles. It is episode 20, and the times I referenced above are correct, but you would need a KOR or HANrel file to translate.

Hi Julia the Berkshire Beanie (I love the name) and bambledd, what you said makes a lot of sense, but when watching one of those scenes (usually a very serious scene where someone is being nasty about the "orphan" status) mostly I am left wondering "who does that!" though a perspective certainly helps. I totally understand what you mean about learning new things about your culture bambledd - I am Indian and here if you put on any regional soap you will usually see the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law engaged in a hair pulling contest. And the other day I actually saw the stall owners get into it at the fish market! So apparently that does happen sometimes! :)
