Moon Chae-won set to romance Joo-won in Green Scalpel

I was half-expecting her to turn it down, but it turns out Moon Chae-won (Nice Guy) has confirmed her casting for KBS’s new medical drama Green Scalpel after all. She’ll be starring with Joo-won (Gaksital) and Joo Sang-wook (TEN), taking on her first doctor role.

Joo-won plays the main character, a surgical genius who has a form of autism and a childlike personality. Moon Chae-won is cast as a principled and committed doctor who was educated at a top school and recognized for her skills early on. She’s a pediatric surgical fellow who doesn’t hesitate to say what she means, even to her superiors. That’s what she did in Nice Guy so I can easily see her pulling off that kind of authoritativeness, though maybe with a softer touch this time around.

Moon will have romantic story threads with both leading men, because this is K-drama, where nobody can get a job done without falling in love first. That means lots of angsty moments for our sharp and skilled assistant professor character played by Joo Sang-wook, whose affection for the heroine goes unrequited. Poor guy. At least he’ll have his brilliance and his looks to fall back on. Meanwhile, she’ll find her feelings increasingly stirring for Joo-won, the warm-hearted and “unique” resident with whom she’ll share a “sweet loveline.”

Written by the scriptwriter of cable series God’s Quiz and directed by the PD of Ojakkyo Brothers and Goodbye Solo, Green Scalpel is being touted as a warm human drama—so not super light, but also not dark and heavy. I expect small moments and a focus on building relationships, which could work well for this kind of story, though I’m kind of bummed to have actors I like so much taking a drama that doesn’t pique my interest all that much. Still, Joo-won’s unusual character opens us up to more narrative possibilities, given his personality quirks and his autism. We’ll have to see whether that’s enough to set this apart from the other medical dramas heading our way.

Green Scalpel will follow Monday-Tuesday’s Shark and premiere in August.

Well, she's seen the script so I'll just hope the drama is worth her time.

But I can foresee her and Joo Sang Wook having some crazy chemistry. I already have second lead syndrome.

Thanks for the news, JB!

Hello Liz! I am not so sure JSW's character was that perfect in Paradise Ranch. He did choose his (ex?) wife in the end over Lee Yeon-Hee's character in the drama, didn't he? He rejected her (that's what I remember) after courting her, and wasn't that partly why she went back to Changmin's character? That is what I remember from that drama... I am happy to be wrong, however, that is what I remember.

0

But in PR, his character is the one who dumped her not the other way around. The girl was like a zombie after it. It's not like she just shrugged it off and went back to her ex.

UGHHH IKRRR

0

Chrissy,
I remember that part, when JSW's character dumped her (I think it was in a park? It was outside, on a bench I think, and they had been there before). Yes, she was devastated. I said that that was partly why she went back to her ex because JSW's character was not in the picture anymore, so he was not (really) an obstacle (romantically) to her getting back with Changmin's (character).

I really wonder though, even if I don't plan to watch. Kdramas seem to know sh*t about disabilities and illnesses (or then ignore it for draaaamaaa) so will we get a high-fuctioning autistic man or is this "mind of a child" description pointing to a Joo Won acting like a 6-year-old, making the romance very very very disturbing and morally inappropriate?

Required fields are marked *

This was something that bothered me from the very beginning but I'll bet that they'll just make him petulant and perhaps a bit of a simpleton (surgical genius notwithstanding) and then claim that it is an accurate portrayal of someone with an autism spectrum disorder.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I imagine so. Dramaland loves using the same "perfect" type of a lead with a phobia or other "endearing" flaw, so now they thought

- How do we make him a genius without it being done before? Studying abroad won't cut it. We need another highly unrealistic explanation as to why the man is a walking brain.

- I know! Autism! Didn't some movie or other show an autistic with mad genius skills? Well, we can't show him as in anyway disabled, since we all know disabled people are eww and fangirls won't like it, so let's just make him grumpy or kooky and call it "autism". Meanwhile, he'll be hot and smart and ready for luuuuuv!

- Excellent! F*ck science!

Instead of co-opting autism, I think the writer would have been better off going for a personality disorder instead. But, you know, an endearing one... we can't have male leads who are not inherently loveable.

I have seen so many dramas and yet I find it a weak link in the narrative if I get to see a 'genius'. All the more so if he's autistic. jeez, why not simply an irresponsible jerk who can cut but also needs some moral guidance?
I liked MCW in Good Guy and I hope the character will be well written. Though, i must be stupid, because I can't see the strong-headed girl in a relationship with the kddo other than a good but strict nuna who straightens the youngster.
On the other hand, I would be very glad if the man andwoman were equal partners, offering each other support. Oh yeah, I've already embarked on that ship.

It would be quite logical for a teenager to be fascinated with a smart and beautiful woman. Still, the same woman and a guy who mentally is 6 years old? That's one stretch too far for me.

Required fields are marked *

If I'm reading your comment correctly, are you saying that a guy with the mind of a 6 year old would not really have the mindset to seek intimacy or develop romantic feelings?

Maybe Joo Won will have childlike mannerisms/social strategies but he will be fully adult on a more global level.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Ok, let's start with the fact that "a medical genis with autism and a mind of a six-year-old" is a very primitive description, based probably on stereotypes rather than some research. Thus it is misleading and ambiguous. The way I see it, a child this age doesn't need a romantic relationship but parental love and learns social interactions. You need to learn them and lots more to build a relationship of that kind. Again, the description is too vague and actually we don't know if the writer doesn't use "6 years old" as a synonyme for let's say a prankster.
Other possibility is a discord between a child's mind and a grown man's body, which is a serious problem for people with mental disorders.

0

I also wanted equal partners... If they are going with real autism in this drama ... I would rather go with second lead...

Individually the cast, the writer and the PD are all good.

It's the characters that worries me. The medical drama part itself is fine.

Of course I am going to watch it but don't know whether I would go for the romance part. Maybe it should be like Golden Time- where there is NO romance.

That would be better.

0

Required fields are marked *

You bet your bottom dollar there's going to be romance.

The autism bit just sounds like a buzz word. As Orion has stated, there's no way that this drama will actually respect the disorder enough to portray it accurately - it'll just be an opportunity for the female lead to 'mother' the male lead.

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

True this. It's Kdrama so I have zero expectations that we'll see any insightful, or accurate portrayal of autism. It'll just be the umbrella under which they will toss whatever personality quirks they decide to give JW's character.

0

Required fields are marked *

I think what we will end up is a very high functioning Aspergers rather than autism.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Oohh! Asperger. It reminded me of the movie 'Adam' with Hugh Dancy and Rose Byrne. I love that film. I also remember the movie Dear John (2010) where Richard Jenkins played Channing Tatum's dad with Asperger. Jenkins's character is the only thing I liked about that film actually. It was heart wrenching seeing him struggle and try to perform his best as a dad.

I can see the potential for a love line if they'd treat JW's character same with those of Dancy's and Jenkins's. Unfortunately, I don't think that is their chosen track.

But if they'll stick to their guns, I'd rather see JW as the reason for other characters's happiness - in the case of MCW and JSW, their romance.

O well. All I can do is hope.

0

Required fields are marked *

Creeps me out about JW mental age be of 6, and it is okay to have a love line with an adult with adult mental age.

Is it really love line, or cute JW crushing on her, and her only taking care of him as a patient??

Even Spencer Reid's character is not a particularly believable fit. He is a "genius" polymath with a photographic memory who can expound on every subject that comes up in conversation, is supposed to be an expert on human behavior, but doesn't know the names of any of the teams in the National Football League. How can you observe human behavior in the United States and not know that?

Okay, let me rephrase that. I prefer to hope that Joo Won's character would be something similar to the character of Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds. Because I like that character. As my drama interests at this moment are quite barren, and has been for most of this year, I am clinging to small hopes.

All that said a "child like" character could also reference playfulness and/or innocence and/or being touchy/feely affectionate-aaaand as I type that I can hear the Joo Won fangurls squeeing lol.

Hi I hope someone can help me answer this question.. it's just something I've been wondering for a while :P
How many episodes scripts does the actors/actresses read to come to decide they want to be apart of it? I feel like many dramas go downhill in the middle of the series and the actors don't read it in the beginning?

Also, JW, MCW, JSW are these actors that get to "choose" what drama they want to be in? I know they aren't at top with Ha Ji Won, Lee byung hun, but do they get multiple scripts and get to choose which one? Unlike rookies who need to audition for the role..

Thanks :)

Not sure whether this affect her decision but last week, the production house/KBS sent flowers to MCW asking her to accept the offer. She might get some kind of pressure for this. But of course,it can be purely because she's interested with the script and the role because she has been interested in doing medical genre since last year prior to NG

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I don't know on what base they do sign but classically, the script reading session is done with 4 episodes. Thing is, it doesn't even matter since the channel/writer/sponsors can change the script completely anytime they want to and without your approval. Being an actor in Dramaland is pretty much playing Russian roulette.

From what I heard, most of the time.. they were only given the long summary of the plot.

Required fields are marked *

I'm no expert or insider, so my answer is gonna be speculation based from what I read/seen on interviews/forum discussions. Anyone can correct me.

It seems, when you're already in the lead territory, like joo won, you do get offers. I feel like they're given the premise of the show and perhaps scripts for the first few episodes. But since kdramas shoot whilst the script is currently being written, I'm betting they only get scripts from eps 1-4, or perhaps just two episodes. Again, pure speculation, but I don't think actors really get a sense of what's gonna happen to their characters. Big difference with movies, where scripts are actually done it seems.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yep, I've also read that they may get up to 4 episodes of scripts. Good enough to let you get a good feeling about something but unfortunately not enough to let you get a good feeling about the end..or middle.

Um, I hope Joo Won can portray the role of someone with autism well and that the writers have researched such a role. I'm guessing this might be on the mild side of the spectrum in the form of a social disability? I also think it may be something they said to draw a buzz. It would be nice if they surprised us by actually making a good portrayal, though.

Hi guys, I see many people here are worrying over JW's character being on a relationship, and talking as if it is impossible or creepy.

Guys, if JW character have autism spectrum disorder/ Asperger

he might be able to be in a relationship, and having this disorder doesn't mean he has a child mind, and that he isn't smart. Some are smarter than normal people.

Yes it is changelling to someone with this disorder to be in a relationship with people, but it isn't impossible.

''most young adults on the spectrum need support and guidance as they piece together the process of dating and successful relationship development. With guidance, understanding and better communication skills, these bright young people can learn to experience meaningful relationships and lead fulfilling lives.''

And since MCW character here is a doctor, I think she'll realize what kind of disorder JW has and etc.

I was reading interesting articles about it, want ti share:

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-trouble-eye-contact/201110/dating-and-young-adults-the-spectrum

Relationships are challenging for people with autism spectrum disorders:

Small documentary: Autism in Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=5U2fFui_Ens

-

But I wonder if they'll ever mention the disorder right on the kdrama. I think not. Basically JW character will act cold, rude and selfish. But this time around it isn't because of some trauma when he was kid, or that his first love left him or he had a unhappy childhood but because he does have a disorder that makes people consufe him as someone cold/selfish/rude when it isn't really his fault.

So, prepare yourself to see JW acting again cold, angry, rude, selfish and screaming like he does a lot ...

I would like to believe that this is what his character has but the drama synopsis specifically mentions that his character will have a childlike personality. As others have mentioned on this thread, that's not really characteristic of Asperger's/high functioning autism, is it?

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I was thinking that, too. On the other hand Joo Won kinda already has a child like personality and he doesn't have autism at all, so who knows? Maybe this character was made especially for him.

On the other hand "child-like personality" is also a broad description since no child is the same. What are we talking here? Quiet child? Rambunctious child? Playful child? Lol, I feel like they didn't give us anything but descriptive words...

Does anyone watch the show Community? Maybe a character like Abed, whom is hinted to have Asperger's. A pretty fun character and child-like in a way. I dunno...since it's a "spectrum disorder" it's really broad and they could give us anything. I also think the characteristics vary, so it may as well be up in the air.

Hello again guys!

So I found this about JW's character:

The role he took up is that of the pediatric surgeon resident Park Si On. He is a kind figure, who grew up with autism and a developmental disorder caused by his father′s abuse. He grows up to become a genius surgeon as it is revealed he has Savant Syndrome, a condition in mentally challenged persons that lets them show a brilliant talent in other areas.

So, I tried to find info about his Savant Syndrome, and "It is estimated that about 50% of the cases of savant syndrome are from the autistic population, and the other 50% from the population of developmental disabilities and CNS injuries''

The savant syndrome: an extraordinary condition. A synopsis: past, present, future:

The Rain Man's Disorder: Savant Syndrome

It is really interesting.

It seems JW character will be ''warm'', others say ''childlike'' so IDK maybe they will change or give us more info about his character.

Oh cool! So that explains things more and it is really interesting. I much prefer the warm description to child-like, since it less broad.

Hah!

Nailed it in one!

I think when others heard childlike personality, they were too much thinking about childish tantrums and general male brat personality.

When I heard childlike personality, I kept thinking of a jokester, fun-loving personality who probably was scarred enough to not take anything seriously or "adult-like"

Anyways, thanks for the links and info.

They were very interesting and informative.

Whatever it is, I just wish for a good drama! :)

I think the articles on news didn't give a clear story on this drama. No wonder so many confuse here. From what I know from the description ( I hope I read a reliable source) , JW's character is not acting childish or a spoiled brat. He's pure, straight, has a strong passion for his occupation more than anyone. He knows about his sickness and don't want others to look strangely at him, so he usually wears neatly when along with others. However, due to his development disability, his social skills is just equal to a ten-year old kid. He has difficulties in communication, esp to express his emotions, so normally the way of his talking just like a robot. Therefore, he's not mental-ill and still be capable in love, just that he's need guidance and more open-hearts.
I'm actually looking for drama. The story is not purely about doctor and surgeon, but it's about how a person who overcomes himself and social prejudices to fulfill his dream. I can't say this drama will turn out good or a disaster. At least we should wait until we see it and give the true comments.

Great!

She was great in Painter of the Wind and after than succesful drama, she's kind of losing it until she acted in The Princess's Man and Nice Guy for KBS and one movie that got her multiple new comer awards.

I dont watch her in Nice Guy but her performance in TPM was impressive.

I am looking forward for this drama, please be good.

As Kiele mentions, autism cam mean many things.
People usually imagine Rainman, but the spectrum is very very broad. Especially people with ASD function fairly normal and they IQ is usually quite high (what can't be said about their emotional intelligence).
I haven't read any synopsis released by KBS, but perhaps by 6-year-old mentality they mean the typical straightforwardness and sort of basic social skills. If Moon Chae-won plays a doctor who is straightforward and says what she thinks, I actually think that's one of the reasons why their relationship can work. Also, I can see why Joo-won's character can be good with kids, they are straightforward as well. Yes is yes, no is no. And if they want something they ask for it right away :--)

I have been ready for them forever. Thank you drama gods for casting these two amazing people together. For those who are still worried about the drama, let's just wait until the drama airs. I have a feeling this production will be special, and although they might not get all the details right, I am sure it will have a "human touch" and give Korean viewers some insight regarding autism. The fact that Moon Chae Won picked the script is saying something because she is normally very careful about the roles she chooses.

She even shared "The writer's ideas and heart for the drama, which portrays a warm and hopeful story, touched my heart. I've always wondered what it would feel like to be a doctor who comes across patients every day. That is why 'Green Mes' especially felt relevant to me. I am curious to what meaning this drama will hold in my life. I hope that the production will leave all of the viewers with a good feeling." (allkpop)

Honestly, I was not that excited about Gaksital, but it turned out to be such a beautiful and heartwarming drama. Let's just hope for the best.

Personally one of the best human dramas ive wtched is Hello, god. The main character also was mentally-challenged but became a genius after a surgery by the second lead. I love that series. Hopefully this one can be one of those heattwarming dramas.

I'm so happy yet so fearful for this decision. All the best for the casts and the production team! I am neutral towards Joo Won and I hope this drama will change that. I really hope they don't screw this up. If MCW picks it, I'm going to just try to believe she chose it because of the quality of the script.

Im not sure if m happy about this or not ... on one hand this girl has crazy chemistry with about all her co stars even when she is the second lead (brilliant legacy) and joo won needs some chemistry after *uhm uhm* but i dont like this story line at all its creepy a mentally childish man and a fully grown girl totally creepy

Wait. I wonder why some are thinking it would be creepy or weird because even as we were kids before, we felt infatuation or maybe for some love at a young age.. we are humans after all... *

aim for positive reception for viewers*

I agree with those who say that we shouldn't judge the book by its cover..or in this case its synopsis. The drama can totally exceed our expectations. The fact that 3 amazing actors Moon Chae Won, Joo Won, and Joo Sang Wook chose this drama already has me interested. And I love how the production/cast is emphasizing the "human" aspect of the drama. Let's look forward to what August will bring.

omg omg I'm exciteddd!!! But worried too since the story kinda weird for me. I hope the writer can cover the story well..
Joowon+joo sangwook = bromance? Kkk
I actually prefer no romance for this kind of drama. But like jb has said 'because this is K-drama, where nobody can get a job done without falling in love first.' soooo.. I'll cross my fingers and hope no more pitiful joo sangwook like in paradise ranch.

The cast is just awesome. Seems like Joo Won’s role is very difficult one, I can’t wait to see what he’ll do with it. I am proud of him because he continues to challenge himself.
I like Moon Chae-won, it will be great to see them together.
Really hope for an interesting story here with a lot of heart.

Honestly the whole concept behind this drama makes me cringe. I have someone on the autism spectrum in my family, I know a number of people on the autism spectrum.

Autism doesn't make an adult act like a 10 year old. Many people (though not all) on the high functioning end of autism are fully capable of performing well at high responsibility jobs without being prodigies. In fact the idea that people with autism are some kind of prodigy does a lot of harm because not all people with autism focus on one thing with laser focus that they become world class experts at. A lot of people with autism are just regular guys.

Also, someone in the comments said that people with autism can't understand love. This is not true. People with autism may not express love in expected ways because of social skills problems or sensory issues or a general lack of a filter, but they feel the whole range of human emotions just like anyone else.

I don't think I can watch this show because my eyes are going to roll right out of my head.

«People with autism may not express love in expected ways because of social skills problems or sensory issues or a general lack of a filter, but they feel the whole range of human emotions just like anyone else».

This main character could be exactly like this. I think just there is some inaccuracy in the drama’s description. The writer did medical drama before and he has been praised for his work. Therefore, I am sure he did the research about this matter to make his hero authentic.

I really hope that you're right. It helps to know that the writer has earned the audience's trust in the past. It wouldn't be the first time a marketing department has completely missed the boat.

Imagine yourself being operated on by this type of surgeon. No thanks! Normal surgeon can already caused blunders. This type of people should be only doing research/assistant teaching. Not a realistic drama. Skip.

Wow. Normal, really? I think the word you're looking for is neurotypical. And there are actually a number of doctors and scientists on the high functioning end of the spectrum. They just don't go around publicizing it because of people saying they aren't "normal". You know, Rain Man was an example of a man with autism who had been institutionalized for most of his life, not everyone on the spectrum.

Yeah. No doubt he is a pretty good actor. One of actors who always give all his effort when doing something. I like the way he challenge himself from one to other drama with many different characters. And for me he always wins.
and I like Moon Chae Won in Princess Man.
So, just hope that the writer can do his job properly..

Moon Jun Won + Moon Chae Won + Joo Sang Woo = must be awesome

i think joo won character has an asperger syndrome, I met some patients who have this kind of condition. They got married and have a children so the probability that joo won and chae won's character romancing in the end is very uch high :D

There are somekong Kong series also have autism ppl having romance with so call normal ppl
And it is pure and simple and cute
And it is not like dating a kid
And they aare faithful and will be very nice to the people they like
So it does nnot mean it will be odd to see disabled ppl in a relationship
And sometime autism ppl won't betray or have motive with someone so ppl will feel relax and comfortable with them
