Park Shi-hoo eyes drama comeback with Golden Cross

Park Shi-hoo (Alice in Cheongdam-dong, The Princess’s Man) has been out of the spotlight for the past year, but has resurfaced to take on the leading role in KBS’s upcoming revenge melodrama Golden Cross (as usual, he’s favorably considering and will probably take the role but hasn’t signed on the dotted line yet, etc).

Golden Cross is the story of a man whose sister is killed and his father framed for it, who then becomes a prosecutor and embarks on a mission of revenge. Lee Shi-young has been offered (and by some reports has agreed to) the role of as a prosecutor whose father was the guy who wronged our hero, while Han Eun-jung has been cast as a mysterious club owner.

Reasons to get excited about this: Writing is Yoo Hyun-mi of Gaksital, who has certainly proven an ability to write dark and twisty revenge stories. And the story has some interesting things going for it, even though the conflict at the heart of it is familiar to many drama-watchers: You killed my father, prepare to die.

Reasons to be wary: At one point I would’ve been thrilled to see Park Shi-hoo in another drama, but right now I’m wondering if it’s too soon after his very messy scandal last year. I followed the story as it unfolded (how could I miss it?) but had just about zero desire to write about it, so you won’t find any news on it here on Dramabeans; suffice to say that there were a lot of accusations, mudslinging, and reputation-smearing on both sides as Park was accused of rape with a woman he’d gone on a date with.

The case was settled out of court so we’ll never know more than that, but facts aside, when your name gets mixed up with a rape charge there’s always going to be a bit of a dark cloud hanging over you. At least for the immediate future. I suppose in that regard it may be easier to accept him doing a revenge drama than a fluffy rom-com (…maybe, I dunno, who’s to say). Only time will tell.

Golden Cross will follow Age of Feeling as KBS’s next Wednesday-Thursday drama, premiering in April.

Everyone has the right to support or not; to believe or not. I really do not like being tagged 'delulu' because I chose to believe and support Sihoo. I have never ever insulted anyone in lieu of another.

I don't condone rape, but neither do I condone going on a drinking binge with males I have just been introduced to. And. Let's say every one of you who's thinking 'he paid her to shut her up' is right. Money then was more than enough to restore 'her virtue'; and that's not shady? I mean, if I am raped and the man comes with a fat wad of notes my way, he can shove it up where he doesn't tan...I'd want retribution of a different kind.

And just to point it out. This is not Sihoo's first project after that sex debacle. He's just finished filming a movie, and he did have tons of support wherever he was filming. And supporters were all ages, not just your regular ahjumas.

False equivalency there beekings. I don't condone rape or drinking either, but they're two separate things.

And there could be good reasons why she would take the money (she doesn't want anymore publicity, she wants it to be over quickly, she took someone's evidence... etc).

Plenty of women never even come forward about their rapes, and we know many more are swept under the rug.

It's not a simple matter.

Those with means (money-wise) and power have their teams of lawyers and advisors that'll come up with various ways to make "this matter go away."

I'm thinking she probably took the money because they threatened her with blackmail (likely using her history with other men) if she continued pressing charges. I don't think Korea has any rape shield laws that prevent victims' sexual histories from being used as part of the defendant's defense...unfortunately.

It's so true what you said, there are way too many women who do not even report being raped, because of said reasons.

Oh god, this comment :/

I really have no idea if the allegations are true or not. But suppose for a second that they are - having a drink with a man you just met is NOT an invitation to be raped.

If she was raped, you have no idea what she went through. Rape can be so traumatic to victims that they can never forget what they've been through. Her identity was exposed to the media, and many were pointing fingers at her, blaming her for ruining his reputation and stating that the whole ordeal was orchestrated by her because she was desperate for fame.

Have a little empathy for a second, and try and imagine how she could have felt. If I were in her shoes, perhaps I wouldn't want to drag this out any longer by taking it to trial and having to suffer through (a very messy) court case, being asked to relive that horrendous night all over again as she gives her testimony in court, with the media constantly hounding her, judging her. Of course money can never make up for what happened, or 'heal' her, physically or mentally. But just because you'd want 'retribution of a different kind' doesn't mean that she would.

I'm not saying that any of what I just said is true and actually happened. I'm just trying to make you see this from a different perspective.

Ah, you opened up a can of worms with this one, javabeans.

The truth of what happened, whether PSH raped the girl or it was consensual, or she was too drunk for consent, or whether she made this up to get money, or something such...

is unknown to most of us. I tried to piece together the info in a logical manner and decided it was hopeless, due among other factors to the fact I have to rely on translations of conversations, where nuance and inflection are so important.

I think we foreign fans who don't know the Korean language should take everything translated with a smidgen of doubt, as so much can be lost in translation.

I'm no big PSH fan, I only watched him in CA, but my own view is that PSH didn't think it was rape. (I'm not saying it wasn't rape, just that it wasn't in his view).

I base this mainly on the fact of how quickly he admitted to having sex with her. I think he would have tried to prevaricate about that from the very beginning. Of course, he could just be delusional. The rest of the case isn't clear cut and could go any way.

So I'm willing to give him a small amount of bod (benefit of doubt) for now and might or might not watch this.

Pretty of man think sleeping with a drunk girl is not ''rape'' and pretty of man think a no, can also be a yes and the girl is playing hard.

He admited he slept with her because he didn't use condom and if he said he didn't, it would confirm he raped her and was lying.

I read every article possible, and also got translated articles and info from korean friends, and from all I know, at least a good person PSH isn't. He leaked the girl's info to everyone bully/find her, he media played how he was a viticm, he changed statements all the time, didn't go to police when asked, just went when he was forced to, failed tests from lie detector, said the girl was drunk but not that much to give consent.

Police and prosecution had proofs, this isn't just something the media created, but real and fact.

Frankly, I think KBS is just throwing this out there, hoping this'll generate ratings if he does confirm (although I don't think it's likely)...because they're probably more than aware that going against You're All Surrounded is a lose-lose situation anyway -- regardless of who they cast as lead.

I, too, think it's too soon for PSH to make a comeback. If it takes someone like Joo Ji-hoon a few years to comeback due to his scandal involving drug use, then that's the least PSH could do -- considering the severity of his situation, whether or not he was found guilty in a court of law. He put himself into a precarious/sketchy situation that only he can blame himself for.

By the way, had no idea what JJH got charged for/served prison time for...found out it was only ecstasy and ketamine--not really considered "hard" narcotics (at least compared to cocaine/meth). Shoot, if by Korean law he has to serve time AND spend time out of the limelight...I think PSH needs to spend at least another 2 years or so before he could even fathom thinking about a comeback.

It is too soon. He should wait another 5 years or so...

I've always liked his dramas and acting, but I can never see him in the same way again. Still, I'll be re-watching The Princess' Man in years to come (I love that drama too much).

I was such a fan of PSH that I felt betrayed when the scandal broke. I don't pretend to know what really happened, but I was disappointed that he was the kind of person who would put himself in such a situation that could lead to the accusations in the first place. The whole situation bespoke of an actor who was poor at controlling himself and managing his career.

That being said, I don't think it's too early for him to come back. He has to find out sooner or later whether the public is willing to forgive and forget. The more he waits, the more he risks becoming irrelevant in the drama land. As for whether I will watch the drama, now it will be entirely up to the drama itself, and not his star power. If it's entertaining despite having him as its leading male, I will watch it. If not, I won't. One thing for sure is that I will never see PSH in the same glowing light again.

U know from the beginning of the PSH case I followed it to the most detaiked parts and I was...I am still surprised at the way the Korea's police and media teated him when he was not even proved guilty and nothing was certain from the first moment they published his name everywhere.....In my country if a celebrity is suspected for committing a crime they will not publicize his name...not until it's proved....they treated him in the most terrible way and it seems it entertains Koreans to see someone hurt so badly by his own people...but for me as an outsider he has been the only korean actor that I see as worthy and his acting is beyond whatever I've seen in many k dramas that I've watched....I'm sure his superb acting ability and talent will be the great help for this drama...if he thinks it good enough to accept....

I am so looking forward to him in his comeback drama. PSH is an exceptionally phenomenal actor and deserves to be on screen. People are to quick to judge and speak, Seriously how would you feel if something you did wrong was publicly announced whether you were not guilty of but rumors and media made you look bad as well as rumors. How would you feel? All charges dropped so let it go. Grant it he made some poor decisions in that night but past is past. Let's speak kindly of him and his dramas until it has been seen.. It doesn't matter if similarities are there it is how he acts and brings out the character that matters... There hasn't been one PSH drama that I thought was bad.. PSH we.love you at Kdrama Kpop junkies and we proudly stand behind you and support you to the fullest...
Bonnie, Bernadine, Teddie, Iris, Krause,Jackie and then rest if the crew.. God bless and stay string and keep moving forward...

I can see why javabeans had no desire to write about this situation not only is it messy it also incites all off these negative/catty posts with people giving their unsolicited opinions about a situation they have little information about. And moreover sharing their mores and social norms that demean and disparage others. What a happy drama reading buzzkill. Enough guys

@Missy

Do you live in a jungle all by yourself?

If you are like the rest of us, and live in a functional society, then social norms do apply to you too, whether you like it or not.

You need to learn to accept that there are people who just EXPRESS their thoughts and opinions, with zero intention of influencing others to do or think the way they do.

So you have no right to shush anyone up.

I think it is too soon tbh. Other artists takes longer time to makes a comeback & public still haunt them about their past. I Google-ed it and found out that the charges against him were dropped in May & he quietly did some photo shoot in Aug and now a drama comeback? That is awfully short of time imo. Probably I so used to K-artist taking time to reflect & defuse the situation, I feel like PSH comeback is too soon. And that scandal makes me looks him in a different no-so-positive way, especially the way he & his management (mis)handled the whole scandal. The whole thing is so messy & shady tbh.

It's amazing how PSH is accused of raping someone and makes a comeback within a year while Han Ye Seul runs off in the middle of a drama and is never to be seen again.
I also think it's unfair of us to judge him because we weren't there, and we don't know what happened. Maybe he was framed. Maybe he did rape her. We'll never know. Making judgement based on partial knowledge is not very smart on our end either way.

So how do we know he was in his right mind during the sex? They were drinking all night, just because someone walks straight while drunk and the other can't doesn't mean the one walking straight is in his right mind. Unless I miss something in the reports, I have always wonder why no one considered this. Was she entirely passed out that she couldn't walk or talk through the night?

If not waiting for a drunk person to be sober for consent is a crime then most college students will be in prison (men and women).

Perhaps the commentors who wrote that PSH should take on a project now should think this over :

What does it say about a person's character that after having been accused of a heinous and despicable act as rape, one just settles it out of court, thereby forever keeping the truth hidden from others, then just dust oneself off and soon afterwards consider picking up an acting project, knowing that people in the acting industry are also known as professional liars?

Is it so easy to just brush aside an accusation of the violation of the female member of society, especially the truth is hidden?

Is it so easy to get into character in an acting project so soon after something that is still fresh in the minds of so many people?

I shudder to think of what really went through PSH's mind when he decided that he should just try to forget the whole scandalous affair and just get on with his life as soon as possible, knowing full well that the scandal has forever tainted his character and worse, affected the life and character of the woman involved.

Surely it cannot be so easy to forget? Or is it?

you can argue whether he's a rapist or not till you die, but still agree to disagree with some.
anyway, lets face he said she said.
He said she drunk (vommit several times in the elevator and in the bathroom of his apt)
he said they had sex.
She said she drunk (he didnt said otherwise)
She said they had sex

So in short, she drunk and they had sex. whether it was rape or not, i dont think a real gentleman would not had sex with a drunk woman. they wouldn't bring the drunk girl to home, with 2 man especially. And whether she looks participated during sex, he should remember, SHE WAS DRUNK.
so whether she's raped or not is judge by the culture.

It's REAL simple, and I say this as a man: He admits she was too drunk to walk by herself. That drunk means she was incapable of informed consent, ergo it was non-consensual. Paying her off/hushing it up does not justify his actions, including the inevitable "slut-shaming" defence he tried. So very, very, very happy this sleazebag won't be sullying Lee Si Yeong's Drama comeback.

Just something to remember everyone :

PSH has NOT been found INNOCENT of the crime.

And even though a person is innocent until proven guilty, the fact remains that the matter was settled out of court, which bears the question WHY?

If PSH is REALLY innocent, shouldn't he INSIST on proving his innocence in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of the public?

Any INNOCENT person would, right?

After all, he was accused of doing something so heinous.

Why cover it all up if he is really innocent?

Do you even KNOW the meaning of judgemental?
You are the one who is so judgemental I cannot even begin to describe how judgemental.

If you dare to challenge others, you need to learn to face the challenge!

Otherwise get off YOUR high horse and get on WITH YOUR LIFE as well!!

I'm purposely not looking at the rest of the comments.

Javabeans, I respect you for staying away from reporting on that reporting feeding frenzy.

Personally, I was deeply saddened by the whole disaster. I came away with a much less opinion of the Korean police and news reporters.

I am sorry you brought it up in this article, but it was bound to be discussed. A person who was never convicted on the evidence will forever be remembered linked with the scandal. A person would have to be very strong to continue in the same profession. The end result was devastating financial and emotional repercussions to the man accused.

I want to see him back. I don't want people to sling mud. If you do not want to watch this actor, then don't. Drama land has plenty of other dramas you can watch.

I just pray that the comment sections of Dramabeans does not turn into a war ground. It hurts me to read such angry words.

You are lucky if it´s just the police and reporters that you lost faith in. I personally came close to losing faith in the good of humanity as I saw how far people were willing to go to excuse unexcusable actions just because they claimed to be fan of the person who was accused of them.

One in four women will be a victim of sexual harrasment or rape in their lifetime and still all we talk about is the 0.4 (!) percent of men that have been accused wrongly.
