Name That Drama: Cryptic clues and burned clothes

Can you name these dramas? As always, feel free to email us your questions and requests for future Name That Drama installments.

  1. AJ asks:

Two families live in the same village and are close friends. They become forever bound when the older generation decides that the youngest boy and girl from each family be switched. The girl lives with a poor family and delivers tofu, while the boy goes on to live with a furniture-making family that later becomes rich. I remember watching it in the 2000s but I’m not sure when it was actually released.

    Please help! Thanks! 🙂

  2. rabby watched this Korean movie on a plane six years ago, and these are the identifying details:

The story line is about a cop (I think) and a journalist, and I think they work together to solve a crime. The journalist inserts cryptic messages in her articles (as clues I think?) and in the end she confesses her love for the guy using cryptic messages in her article too. Please help. Thanks!

  3. Kay has a question about a K-drama from the mid-2000s:

A teenage girl gets pregnant and then dumped by her boyfriend. She moves back home to raise her son with her mom. A guy next door teaches her how to play the guitar and eventually they fall in love. I remember the girl being really tall and having a quirky personality and shortish hair. Sorry not much more detail than that.

  4. JAL’s drama doesn’t have a lot of details, but the costume should be a recognizable detail for anybody who’s seen it…

In this K-drama, I recall the main character living with his brother and uncle and they loved to eat ramyun. He also had a friend who was a girl that ended up working at a “night club” having to wear a Sailor Moon costume.

  5. Aline only has a scene, and isn’t sure if it’s a drama or movie. See if you can tell!

The female lead is a ghost or spirit and is always around the male lead. I remember that she wanted new clothes and asked to the guy to buy a dress for her and then burn it because like that she would be able to wear it. Sorry but I don’t remember anything else. I hope someone can help me. Thank you very much.

Thanks for playing, everyone — till next time!

Hi Samsooki

Me too. I have no idea. I would be happy if I guess one, but not this time.

I think #2 is Strongest Romance, the rom com movie Lee Dongwook had with Hyun Young.

#5 could also have been Ghost House, the movie with Cha Seungwon and Jang Seohee.

I don't think it's Strongest Romance--wasn't she a broadcast journalist?

Wow usually I get two but this time, no idea.

Last one, maybe, Arang and the Magistrate? I don't actually remember if they burnt the clothes but the ghost, the clothes, somehow it seems to fits. But I might be totally wrong.

Hope everyone finds what they're looking for~

Yes, someone further down said it was Kasuka na Kanojo and I think they're right ! I actually remember Kasuka na Kanojo now, completely forgot I watched it! But I definitely recommend watching Arang too :p

I originally thought Arang and like most the burning of the clothes just didn't ring a bell, but after seeing the comments about Kasuka na Kanojo I went off and watched it, and it is definitely this. The lead gives the ghost woman new clothes and he has to burn them so that she can receive them.

#5 is definitely Arang and the Magistrate! The guy had to measure her for the clothes because he was the only one who could see her. It was so awkward, hot, and funny all rolled into one. Great drama! And she does ruin the clothes soon after because the other ghosts mess with her.

I agree with you on Arang and the Magistrate. This was definitely in that drama.

Yeah, but he didn't need to burn the clothes so she could wear them, he just gave them to her.

Oh that's right. I was reading it that it got ruined afterwards...hrm, I still think it could be Arang though. I'll have to find where that scene is and post it for whoever it was who was asking can check it out.

I went back and read the recaps for Ep. 2 (where he measures her) and Ep. 3 (where he gives them to her and she ruins them) and, yeah, there's no burning involved. Oh well, I still think this person should watch it just because it's such a good drama. lol

googled #4.it might be 애정의 조건 (terms of endearment) with Han Ga-in, Jo Yeo-jung, and Ji Sung

#5 made me think of Arang, too, though I'm not sure if I remember the clothes getting burned.

Its definitely Arang & the Magistrate. They just didn't do a scene where they burnt the clothes.

#4 does sound like Terms of Endearment. It was the first k-drama I ever watched. I couldn't keep up with the names so whenever I tried to tell anyone the story I called the Ji Sung character "Sir Cry-A-Lot". Sir Cry-A-Lot disappeared mid story and I only watched to the end because I couldn't believe/accept that he was not coming back. He never did return.

This is the very first time I recognized a drama that needed naming.

Wow, al first I would swear that #4 was a K-movie, "Boys of Tomorrow" (2007, with a very young Yoo Ah In, absolutely awesome performance, I tell you), but I didn't know that existed a drama with those same facts.

(Never go to bed without knowing something new!)

Yes, it is Perfect Couple! I was so excited that I finally recognized one when I read that description. The opening sequence was so funny when she stabbed him with the skewer. And her voice was pretty annoyingly funny too.

I remember being really confused by a scene where the cops grab poles from their trunks and attack a suspect's car. Does a Korean person, or someone familiar with Korean law enforcement, know if that's something just done in movies/dramas? If not, what is that all about?

I actually did a fist pump one time coz I got 1 of them right. lol I am fairly new to Kdrama watching so even though I have seen over 100 dramas by now, they're usually the newer ones and/or popular classics. I have much to learn about the old and obscure dramas.

#3. Country Princess.
I can vaguely remember the plot but the description of the hair reminds me of this drama. It's stars Bae Do Na and Shin sung wook.

There's no guitar. And she met the main guy after she gave birth and move to the city (where she then work for his dying noodle company and moving in with him since she has no place for her child, her baby brothers, and herself). The second leading guy (play by Kang Dong Won), she had met him before she got pregnant. Their love never blossom because the evil sister never told Do Na about his confession; thus, she never realize he had feelings for her.

In Arang and the Magistrate, the office seamstress does burn Lee Seo Rim's (Arang's) clothes after her corpse is discovered and I think Kim Eun Oh watches her when she does it. But Aline sounds like she is remembering Kasuka na Kajono where the ghost receives the gift of new clothes when an outfit she has picked out and the lead guy has purchased for her are burned. I think she receives two outfits this way.

I know #1 because I was so angry with how they ended the story...well the whole drama was crazy and made me mad. It was around 2000 or 2001 I think. I'm having a problem finding the title though. I know it had Park Sang Min and Lee Min Young. If I find the title I'll add it underneath this comment.

Park Sang Min: 박상민
Lee Min Young: 이민영

Here you go...The title is 만남 (translated to meeting?) and it was a kbs drama from 1999. I couldn't find any other links since it's so old. It still riles me up to this day so that's why I knew from your question right away. I added the names in Korean in case you needed it.
