Mask: Episode 4

Our little frog is thrown into the big pond, and luckily Ji-sook has enough pluck and smarts to know it’s time to get serious. Her new husband doesn’t seem interested in working with her so she’s left on her own, at least for now. But a crisis could open the doors of communication between them, and I can’t wait to see them learn to work together.

EPISODE 4: “Heaven Made by the Devil”

Ji-sook asks Seok-hoon what he wants her to do after she marries Min-woo, and he tells her to get Min-woo to trust her. He clarifies that he means for her to make Min-woo want her physically, since he’s so touch-averse that if he wants to touch her, it will be the sign that he trusts her.

In one year Min-woo will be made heir of SJ Group, and Seok-hoon means to make sure that never happens. He waxes poetic and muses that when you have power, you sing, but when you have nothing, you only scream. ~shiver~

After the wedding, Min-woo and Ji-sook arrive at the family home, and Min-woo cocks an eyebrow at the way she gapes at the opulence and the virtual army of servants. He heads to the shower leaving Ji-sook alone in their room, where she tries to turn on the television but grabs the wrong remote, and hilariously ends up opening the curtains and shutting off the lights by accident, hee.

She’s in front of the bathroom door when he comes out, wet and rumpled, and she falls on the bed bracing herself for his husbandly intentions. Ha, he’s just reaching for some water, and tells her to get up. He calls for new sheets (what, like she soiled the ones on the bed just by touching them?) and orders Ji-sook to go take a shower when he sees a cherry blossom caught in her collar.

She pushes back, saying she’ll shower when she feels like it thankyouverymuch, so he settles for telling her to wash her face at least. He leans very close to mutter a sarcastic, “Please,” which is when the maid and butler enter with the sheets. They snicker at what looked like the start of a very sexy wedding night. I love these two.

Alone, Ji-sook thinks on Seok-hoon’s advice to make Min-woo lust after her, and Min-woo’s reminder that he’ll kill her if they marry. When she finally comes out, Min-woo points her to her new bed — the couch. Dang, that’s cold.

He tells her there are only three rules in his room: don’t touch his things, don’t make noise, and never, ever go into the locked room on the second floor. He gives her permission to see the man she said she loves, so long as she’s discreet. As long as the world thinks this was a love match, he doesn’t care what she does.

Ji-sook is a bit shocked, but when she stands to say they don’t need to go to such extremes, she drops her purse. This triggers the false memory of Min-woo strangling Eun-ha, and he snarls and throws it in anger. He gasps that this is a business marriage only, telling Ji-sook to stop pretending to be nice. If he kills her, it will be her fault for provoking him.

The next day at breakfast, Ji-sook tells the curious family that she’s feeling much better after her “accident.” She and Min-woo play the comfortable couple well enough to satisfy Min-woo’s dad, while Seok-hoon smirks. Dad gives Min-woo instructions on handling some business contracts, and tells him that if the new mall deal goes through, he’ll transfer him to headquarters.

He instructs Ji-sook to start working in the gallery, which Mi-yeon and Mom object to since that’s their territory. But Dad says he wants her out meeting people in order to recover faster, and Stepmom goes along with it, even suggesting a party.

Seok-hoon pulls Ji-sook aside to tell her what’s really going on: the chairman wants his family members keeping an eye on her. He suggests she use the opportunity to find out their secrets, but Ji-sook is more interested in Seok-hoon paying off her family’s debts. He says he’ll do it slowly so as not to draw suspicion, but warns her not to ask again and make him angry.

Ji-sook innocently asks why he didn’t tell her that Eun-ha was in love with someone, but before Seok-hoon can blow his top, Min-woo comes looking for Ji-sook. They sign the marriage certificate, but for one frightening moment Ji-sook starts to sign it with her real name. Luckily she catches it in time to scratch it out and sign “Seo Eun-ha.”

At the exact same time, her father is signing Ji-sook’s death certificate. He breaks down sobbing in the office, not caring about the stares he’s drawn. Later he goes through some of Ji-sook’s things with her mom and friend from work, and Mom is brought to tears by a watch that Ji-sook got as a graduation present.

Ji-hyuk follows a lead on a job opportunity, which turns out to be collecting money for the very loan sharks that are after his family. He gets the money, but not without getting beat up himself in the process. He takes the money to Director Shim, reminding him that fifteen percent of it goes towards his own debt.

Interesting… on his way out, Ji-hyuk runs into Scar on his way to see Director Shim. Scar offers to buy some of the debts that Shim holds (including, I assume, Ji-sook’s family’s), but Shim plays hardball and asks for more money.

Mi-yeon corners Ji-sook at the gallery, determined to find out the truth of what “Eun-ha” remembers. She prods into her personal life, asking about the men in her past and the one she’s supposedly still seeing. When Ji-sook doesn’t remember, Mi-yeon snidely offers to remind her, but they’re interrupted by Stepmom with the wife of a business contact. The woman is going shopping at their department store, and Stepmom suggests that Ji-sook go with her.

Seok-hoon is furious when Ji-sook calls to tell him where they’re going, but he can’t stop it from happening. Min-woo makes rounds of the store, ordering Ji-sook’s old department to clean up, and her coworker says they’re still upset over a friend’s death.

Ji-sook’s friend whines, but they work hard to put all the pink merchandise out like Min-woo ordered. Of course when he comes back by, he says he liked it better the other way and tells them to put it back. The boss smiles agreeably to his face but growls when he walks away. Can’t blame her — he’s an exquisite ass to his employees.

Ji-sook arrives at the department store armed with giant sunglasses and a large floppy hat to hide her face. She sees her former coworkers and can’t make herself walk past them. A memory surfaces of her telling Seok-hoon that she feels like she’ll go to hell for pretending to be someone else, and he’d said that lying isn’t always a bad thing. He’d told her to wear her mask and the world would be on her side. In the store, ji-sook does her best to wear that mask, and makes it past her old friends.

As she shops with the lady, her former coworkers nudge each other over her resemblance to their dead friend — but since they saw Eun-ha before her accident, they only think it’s Ji-sook’s doppelganger. Seok-hoon rushes to the store, but stays at a distance when he sees that Ji-sook seems to be pulling this off. He notices that she’s wearing the necklace he gave Eun-ha, and he’s caught with an unguarded look on his face when Ji-sook spots him.

On the drive home, Min-woo seems pleased with his new wife, asking if she’s always that good with people. He tells her that she’s wrong about not being happy if you always wear a mask — sometimes wearing that mask allows you to pretend to be happy. He smiles to have found a proper business partner.

Dad is happy too, as he talks to his acquaintance whose wife went shopping with Eun-ha, and hears that the two women had a good time. He compliments Ji-sook on being good with people, and asks Min-woo to talk in private.

Stepmom comments that Ji-sook sure did take a lot of merchandise without paying, then chuckles that they’re really family now. Everything she says is hard to pin down, because it all sounds like compliments and feels like insults. Mi-yeon isn’t happy and says she still doesn’t trust Ji-sook, wondering what will happen if her father doesn’t run for president as her family expects.

Dad is thrilled that Ji-sook made his colleague’s wife so happy, and Min-woo admits that she seems to be genuine. Dad laughs and tells him to make sure he knows whether she’s genuine, if he wants to keep doing business with her.

Min-woo barks at Ji-sook for sitting on his bed, so she pout-stomps her way to her couch. She catches him looking at her with questioning eyes, but he changes the subject to tell her that she’ll be offered a chance at one percent of SJ Group at a business meeting tomorrow. He mentions that if she was just helping him, she doesn’t have to take it — ah, it’s a test. Ji-sook says she’ll take the one percent, reminding Min-woo that they got married for business reasons.

Ji-sook checks her brother’s social media account and is reminded that today is their mother’s birthday. She leaves, watched by Seok-hoon, who is in turn watched by Mi-yeon. She goes to her family’s restaurant, and remembers seeing her mother once refuse to buy more hand cream when there was still a few drops in the bottle. She’d promised to buy her mother a new bottle of cream soon.

As Ji-sook watches her father, Seok-hoon catches up and grabs her by the wrist. He growls that love is the most useless emotion in the world, asking if she wants her parents to live a luxurious life. She nods, so he tells her that in order for that to happen, she has to forget them.

Ji-sook asks for a promise in return — will Seok-hoon take care of her family for the rest of their lives? He says that’s up to her, challenging her to play her part well enough to make him promise that.

They’re distracted by Ji-hyuk’s voice asking a neighbor ajumma if she’s seen his mother, who’s apparently been gone all day. Ji-sook turns her face away, but Ji-hyuk is curious and steps closer. To put him off the scent, Seok-hoon pulls Ji-sook in close, making their presence look like a romantic tryst.

Ji-sook shoves Seok-hoon off her as soon as Ji-hyuk moves away, and they listen in as her father calls people asking if they’ve seen his wife. Ji-sook starts to panic, since her mother always tells someone when she goes anywhere. She looks to Seok-hoon for help, and he agrees to find her. But he hardens again and reminds her that it’s her choice — she can make him do the things she wants.

Ji-sook arrives home to a dark room and Min-woo in bed already. He’s actually awake, but he pretends to be asleep as Ji-sook sits alone with her thoughts.

Seok-hoon wears his friendly expression with Mi-yeon, saying that something came up at work. She pretends concern over the seriousness of the problem if he had to attend to it himself, and he makes something up about a clause on the agreements they’ll be signing tomorrow. He slaps down a card for SJ Group’s law office to call if she doesn’t trust him. He goes to shower, but instead listens at the door as Mi-yeon makes the call. They corroborate his story, and Mi-yeon rips up the card in fury as Seok-hoon grins nastily behind the bathroom door.

Min-woo wakes from a nightmare of strangling Eun-ha, and he sees Ji-sook asleep on the couch, still fully dressed. He goes to cover her, but stops to watch her sleep, and ends up leaving her as she is. In the morning he fusses at her for coming in so late, and tells her to get ready for their big meeting today. After he leaves, she sees his monogrammed handkerchief on the table, knowing it wasn’t there when she went to sleep the night before.

The investment luncheon is being held on the lawn, and Ji-sook makes the butler tear up when he tries to talk to her about the menu and she walks away when she sees Seok-hoon. Mi-yeon overhears Ji-sook ask if Seok-hoon has found “her,” and he lies that it’s someone she loves like a mother.

He tells Mi-yeon that he found the woman, but when he pulls Ji-sook aside, he instructs her to make sure this investment agreement fails. She’s to mention to the mayor that Congressman Seo knows of his corruption scandal, which will scare him off investing in the family’s new mall.

He says that her mother was at a friend’s house and returned home late last night, and that she can check for herself when the luncheon is over. Then he reaches out and rips Eun-ha’s necklace off her neck, saying that she owns everything in the house… except this.

Of course Seok-hoon is lying about Ji-sook’s mother, because her father and brother are getting downright frantic to find her. None of her friends or relatives have seen her, but suddenly Ji-hyuk seems to have an idea of where she could be.

Ji-sook calls her father, just to hear his voice, but hangs up quickly when he asks if it’s his wife calling. She knows Seok-hoon lied, and she walks straight to where he’s talking with the servants and slaps him hard across the face. Good girl!

She orders him in a shaking voice never to make a promise to her again — she wont trust him anymore. She storms to her car, only pausing for a moment to speak to Min-woo when he stops her. He reminds her of this luncheon’s importance and her receiving a percent of the business, but she says she doesn’t need it and drives away with Seok-hoon pounding on her car window. Min-woo’s father asks why she left like that, and both Min-woo and Seok-hoon go after her.

It’s a race to see who can get to Ji-sook first, and Seok-hoon even gets Scar in on the pursuit. He tells Scar to stop Min-woo, and he’ll get to Ji-sook. Scar swerves in front of Min-woo’s car every time he tries to get close to Ji-sook’s, making Min-woo slam the wheel in frustration.

He calls someone and activates a tracker on Ji-sook’s car, but by now Seok-hoon has caught up with her. He calls her and tells her it’s not too late to go home, but she yells that this situation is all his fault and she shouldn’t have trusted him. He asks what she’ll do when she finds her mother, reminding her that she’s a murderer.

When Ji-sook says she’s going to find her mother and he can figure out what to do after that, he warns that if she does this, he may kill her. But she’s beyond caring, and invites him to do whatever he wants. Done with playing nice, Seok-hoon hits the gas and slams his car into hers.

Ji-sook tries to shake him by swerving through traffic, but he keeps up for a while, until he nearly hits a semi truck and goes off the road into a ditch. Ji-sook can’t leave him there and climbs into the ditch to pull him out of the car, and he seems to be pretty badly hurt.

Still, Seok-hoon actually gloats as he lies bleeding that even though he could kill her, she could never kill him. She counters that she’s fully capable of it, but she uses his phone to call for an ambulance. She leaves, but not before reminding him that if anything happens to her mother, she won’t let it go.

She finds the family restaurant deserted, and goes into her old room. The watch her mother cried over is on her dresser, and Ji-sook cries that this is all her fault. She runs through the neighborhood calling for her mother, not caring about hiding her face — but at the same moment that she sees Min-woo looking for her, Scar turns the corner and guns right for her.

Min-woo grabs Ji-sook and twirls her out of the way, and they both land on the pavement, breathless but unhurt. Min-woo leaps up and tears off his coat, disgusted by the dirt, but Ji-sook lies there in a shower of cherry blossom petals with a blissful expression on her face. Ji-sook says she knows where her mother is, and jumps up to beg Min-woo’s help. He agrees, but mostly to get her to stop hanging off his pants leg.

Ji-hyuk and Dad are also close to figuring out where Mom is, but though they know the general wooded area they’re looking for, it’s been so long since they were here that it’s all grown over. Ji-hyuk wants to call the police, but Dad says they’re too busy helping someone important.

That “someone important” is Ji-sook and Min-woo, and an out-of-breath Min-woo reminds Ji-sook that she said she’d do anything for him if he called in this favor. A cop finds one of Mom’s shoes, triggering a memory of a young Ji-sook who’d fallen near this place, and Mom had helped her up.

Dad had been planting a tree for each child, adding a third, “Ji-eun’s tree.” Mom tells little Ji-sook that her unni died and is now in their hearts. The family take a picture, and promise to come here every year on Mom’s birthday. And they had done it, which we see as Ji-hyuk looks through the photos they took every year, watching Ji-eun’s tree grow.

Ji-sook gets to the place first, and sees her mother lying prone beside Ji-sook’s tree. Ji-sook sinks to her knees and embraces her mother, crying and begging her to wake up. Mom opens her eyes weakly to see her daughter, and Ji-sook cries even harder in relief.

Min-woo climbs the hill and sees Ji-sook protectively curled around a strange woman, crying and saying she’s sorry. As he watches, a soft look comes over his face.

COMMENTS

Well, now what?! I’m guessing that Ji-sook will be dragged from her mother, and her appearance deemed a hallucination on Mom’s part, but I’m glad that Ji-sook got to see that her mother was safe, at least. I think she’ll be a lot more likely to commit to getting involved with her new family if she’s not so consumed with worrying about her old one. In that, Seok-hoon has an excellent point. If only he would use his powers of logic for good instead of evil. And despite that this turn in Ji-sook’s life is a horrific one, there’s need for her strength elsewhere, too. Min-woo needs someone on his side against his family, to help him break free of their drugging and gaslighting, so he can find freedom.

I’m liking Ji-sook as a character more and more as the story unfolds, because she’s not the halting, shy flower she first appeared. She’s soft and she knows when to keep her head down, but when it matters, she speaks up. It’s most evident with Seok-hoon, that even though he obviously intimidates her, he doesn’t seem to actually scare her — at least not in a debilitating way. She lets him call the shots, but she doesn’t let him win when he throws his weight around a bit too hard for her liking. I loved how she insisted he take Scar with him her first night as Eun-ha, and when he confronted her outside her family’s restaurant, she didn’t let him make the rules. She asked for something in return for her complicity in his plans: her family’s financial security. And when she actually slapped Seok-hoon for lying about finding her mother, I saw a glimpse of the Ji-sook to come — the strong, steel-spined woman she will be when she gets her feet under her in this nest of vipers she now calls family. They’re not going to know what hit them.

Speaking of Seok-hoon, is it just me or is he getting more and more intriguing? He’s such a contradiction, the way he’s determined to manipulate events in the family, yet seems weak to Ji-sook in unguarded moments. In particular, Seok-hoon’s repeated “make me” challenges to Ji-sook are so telling, in more ways than one. On the surface he’s reminding her: do what I want, and I’ll do what you want. It’s up to you, and you can make me do whatever you want me to do. In a way, he’s giving her all the power. And maybe I’m imagining it, but underneath his anger and force I hear a note of longing, that he’s subconsciously asking her to be on his side. I think he’s struggling with Eun-ha’s loss more than he lets on, based on how he looks at Ji-sook when she’s not paying attention. He’s asking her to be Eun-ha, to be his partner, and in return he’ll give her everything she wants. Yes, he’s got an agenda, but I can see his emotions clashing as he tries to stay harsh with her. His own mask is already slipping.

As one last thought: I guess the show is going with the “missing twin” angle after all, in regards to Ji-sook and Eun-ha’s resemblance. Ji-sook had a sister named Ji-eun, and the names (Ji-eun/Eun-ha), when paired with their identical looks, seems to be too much for coincidence. I’m curious now, if Eun-ha is Ji-sook’s “dead” twin, why she was thought dead and how she ended up the congressman’s daughter. I suppose we’ll see soon enough, though I confess I found the doppelganger explanation more interesting. But if the two women do turn out to be lost twins, there’s a lot of melodramatic goodness to be mined, and I’m pretty much open for whatever the show wants to throw at us.

About the twins vs the dopleganger thing I think they've included it as an important plot point. Identical twins share 99.6% of their DNA. If somewhere down the line one of the villains tried to use DNA evidence to discredit her, this could come handy.

Because at some point they MIGHT have to check the girl's DNA if anything crazy happens and she's suspected of being an imposter, and since twins' DNA are 99% identical, they won't be able to prove that she's a fake LOL!

I love the story very very much. It has been such a long time that I was so addicted with a drama and this is one of them. Soo Ae's acting is so incredible (with her husky sexy voice) and the chemistry that she has with the actors are so good! Loving every moment of the drama. The pace of the story is excellent!

Addictive is exactly what this drama is. I didn't expect that much. This is my first time seeing Soo-Ae in anything but I'm definitely a fan now - in only 4 episodes.

I love MH's servants. At the luncheon the butler's triumphant expression at making all those eel products in anticipation of some steamy newlywed moments, and then crushing despair when this all went straight over uri JiSooki's head. LOL.

I still have my doubts about the twin thing though. Surely JiSook would know if her dead unni had been her twin, right? And yet when she asked her mother about it, she laughed it off. So I think the doppelganger theory is still in play.

I'm much more curious about how JiSook will explain this woman to MinWoo, given that there's no way he could have missed hearing her screaming 'omma' searching in the woods. But MinWoo seems well on his way to falling for her already, which just makes me hurt all the more for his previous loneliness. This kind of acceptance so quickly can only stem from a deep lack, and I can't wait to see these two team up.

During the poolside date (when he supposedly tried to strangle his fiance), his fiance was taunting him about their mothers... She said that she was abandoned by her mother when she was little and she doesn't think that she will come to her wedding and also that she heard that Minwoo's mom also left him and asked him if she is coming to the wedding or not? This clearly made him mad and he gulped down the wine...and later when he blacked out and that false memory was implanted... Minwoo will just assume that this is the mother his wife was talking about...

I think Min Woo will know the exact truth about Ji sook. If you read the wikipedia page of this drama it says "when he (Min Woo) discovers Ji-sook's deception, he keeps her secret as he finds in her something he has never experienced before." I think both of them will team up and become the dream team! Can't wait!

Earlier, SH told his wife that JS wanted him to find a woman for her. "Someone who was like a mother to her." I think that is how it will be explained away. The danger, of course is that MW may investigate who the woman is. They could find a connection to the girl who looks just like EH. I guess that wouldn't happen till ep 13 or 14 though...

Seok Hoon doesn't want the new business/ mall to take place and I think he is trying his best to pull the family down and not inherit their wealth.

When said about "when you have power, you sing, but when you have nothing, you only scream" I think he was implying to his own life. I guess either his mother or father went mad in the process while MinWoo's father made all that wealth. He must be only taking revenge... so he is trying to even make Minwoo believe that he is mad and manipulating his wife into alcoholism... I won't be surprised when it gets revealed in the end...

It's a typical chaebol mystery drama...So far I love he drama just for the excellent acting, story telling, narration, direction and pace.

Thanks for the recap. I marathoned it in the last two days once I realized the Secret writer is HERE.

Maybe it's on purpose, but the lead actor in this premise - a prince-like, easily manipulated son enters into an arranged marriage to a shy, poor, determined bride who has agreed to the marriage to help out her family. Husband brings her into the palace-like house wherein an handsome yet evil man works at cross purposes to the husband family's success -- sounds familiar.

I like the the writer and director are playing intensely with the melo makjang moments. It is so much fun to see YJH let it all out with his evil character. For Soo Ae to suffer so much much from the conflict of living a lie vs living honestly but desperately.

All this works well alongside the real moments - when SH sees JS won't let him die, when MW feels sympathy for his new bride.

PS I hate all the bad guys. I don't care if Jun Gook Hwan, MW's father, played nice in Angry Mom. He's back in all his cold hearted, business before humanity schtick. I hate MW's step mom and his sister. I even don't care that much for JS's weak family. I am so SICK of these people who allow their children to suffer as a result of their irresponsible behavior. That is why it will be that much better when Ji Sook triumphs a the end. Cause she will, right? And MW will fall passionately in love with her and he will not be able to survive without her, right? I can't wait!!

Mask is such a high quality melodrama and it's not surprising since the last drama from the writer was just as good. But every episode and every scene is sooo good! It's definitely my number one drama right now.

I love that our heroine is no weak candy girl that gives in easily and Su Ae is doing a fine job!

Who else loves Seok Hoon?! I've seen Yeon Jung-hoon here and there in the typical roles of the good guy but in this role as the villian, he is WONDERFUL! He's charming, calculating, mysterious, scary, cold, but so darn interesting. His scenes with Ji Sook is thrilling to watch.

LollyPip :) Thank you for the recap! I have already watched the episode but wanted to read your insightful comments and fellow followers' take on the episode nonetheless! I like the fast developing story. I hope MW will find out about her secret identity and they'll help each other up from their problems as they need each other if JS can hold the facade of her not being the congressman's daughter. If she lets the ruse down, then she, SH and MW will lose their winning card. The story is so exciting. I totally adore JS's character, strong, bold, loving, caring, courageous, friendly, ... such a deliciously strong female lead whose presence is leading (pun intended)! I hope the writer(s) keep(s) it that way! :)

Just some theories and speculation on what comes next.

1. The dead sister may or may not be her twin, but either way I suspect that she was stolen (lost?) as a young child and sold. Why she might have been sold maybe to fake a birth or cover up another dead kid?
2. Whether sister or twin, I am sure that when our heroine finds out, she will become a scorpion that can also swim. That will not bode well for that house of evil.
3. Next episode, she will tell her husband the true story (or at least some of it) and they will start plotting together.

Mysteries still abound - like what is in that locked room that hubby wants her to keep out of? Who really killed her "sister"? Will the butlers live happily ever after :D

Warning her not to enter the locked room at the top of the stairs - like that's going to work. Never has before. Keep away from that box, Pandora. Don't go down into the cellar, Mrs Bluebeard the 8th. Stay out of Rebecca's bedroom, second Mrs DeWinter. Ignore the screams from the locked and deserted wing of the mansion, Jane Eyre. I mean come on!

This kind of reminds me of an old Errol Flynn Barbara Stanwyck movie called Cry Wolf with an interesting twist on the old insane husband trope. Not that I'm predicting that Seok-hoon is taking the Errol Flynn role but it would be very interesting.

Windsun, I have a feeling that the twin was sold by her own father. Somehow I feel there is more to him than meets the eye, considering he was always in debt and has money problems. Maybe he told his wife that their daughter was dead, but in reality she lives a better life. And maybe that could be a way he is justifying it to himself. "I didn't do anything wrong, my daughter will live a better life, and I will pay my debts"

At least that is what I feel about the first theory :)

I am in a CONFUSION !!!! Sometimes it seems, SH loved Eun Ha (real) like the way he took the necklace from Ji Sook, but then again he told JS to attract Min woo physically and get the control over him !!!

I mean is that the plan from beginning??? when EH(real) was alive?? or it was planned after Ji Sook was planted??
I mean how he could push his girlfriend to have a physical relationship with a guy?? or he was not bothered because he was already married??

I don't think he killed her - the mystery is who did - I suspect his wife, but who knows. So though he may have loved her, not enough to find out who actually killed her and jeopardize his plan. And he probably has a really twisted version of "love".

I think you're right about his twisted idea of love.

Mi-Yeon could be the culprit but a part of me feels that she is too easy to suspect, most people suspect her, and the answer is rarely what the viewers assume. Although both are suspect, SH's thirst for power (and probably revenge here) makes him unstoppable. Eun-Ha was getting weak, she told him she might go crazy living like this, "this marriage is important to whom?", he's the only one who knew she could be replaced. As if by chance after their convo about the doppleganger she dies.

Plus, he tried to kill Ji-Sook twice in this episode, when he actually needs her (just like he needed Eun-Ha), this shows me that he's very unstable. He kills when he feels that things won't go his way.

But that could be someone totally different too, who knows?

The mother seems suspect to me, that is, MW's stepmom. She's collabing with the shrink, and very worried about him strengthening his position with EunHa.

At this level where the chaebols are playing high stakes games, I think they're not so concerned about physical relationships that are viewed from the business context. They might dislike it - explains Eun-ha's attitude towards Mi-yeon - but I think in a way, both Seok-hoon and Eun-ha were kinda 'secure' about the underlying passion?strength? of their own twisted relationship.

If I recall correctly (it was either in episode 1 or 2) the real Eun Ha and Min-Woo discussed penalties if he violated the contract between them - which had a clause of no physical contact/intimate relations - because she was in love with someone else.

@ fantasy
SH probably did care enough about EH, that he gave her the necklace and so that his wife was jealous. He may have planned that EH would sabotage the father's effort to get MW in a position of power.

The killer is the one who got the maid to put the drugs into the bottle of wine. Both MW and EH drank that wine and after that, they passed out. EH passed out in the pool and so drowned before anyone could help her in time. MW would have saved her but he was affected by the drug as well.

So SH hides his dismay and goes on to Plan B, ie get the doppelganger to take the place of EH. He tries to bribe and then successfully threatens JS into compliance, but it may be a lot more than he bargained for, since she is not above threatening him back and rebelling. And her fight back attitude is actually something he admires... so he's also right in position to fall in love with her who looks so much like his own EH. :)

Gb your right, I forgot that minwoo also drank from that cup, and that explains why he passed out. But I doubt that the person who poisoned the cups would be seok hoon himself, unless it wasn't poison but just enough of a drug to pass out.. since minwoo didn't die after it.

I remember yay scene when seok hoon was talking to his wife and she seemed suspicious, when he looked out the window he found eunha downing in the water

@ ❤TurkishRose Healer❤
Yes, that was not really poison but something to make them pass out. I also do not think SH was the one to do this as he would not want EH to be affected. If he had been the one, then it backfired on him badly because she died as a result, and that was probably not in his plans.

So we have suspicious sister and evil mother as suspects.

It occurs to me again that it's terrible to be in a chaebol family which is so unlike family... where relatives are enemies and cannot be trusted. One does not know who is on one's side or who will keep a deal... so lonely... poor Min Woo and now poor Ji Sook. They had better band together fast!

Fantasy, I don't think that was the plan originally with his real eunha. He knew it was just a contract marriage and she won't have to do anything beyond that. The real eunha was strong and she had agreed with min woo that she gets a percentage and still keeps dating the person she loves.

But since this is not the real eunha, he wants to take advantage of minwoo as much as possible. :)

I love it that Jisook always stand for herself especially if it concerns her family. She is no damsel in distress even when her situation allow her (like in the usual kdrama) to be strung along by her brother-in-law. The scene where she slap him is sooo satisfying, even SeokHoon seems a little stunned.
And how unsettling is that that SeokHoon continue to remember her Eunha (as in she seems so different than the Eunha we come to know at the first eps) whenever he sees Jisook? Can't wait to see how Jisook will eventually wrap Seokhoon around her hand rather than the other way around.

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

I love the pace of this series. JS is a great character and I like that she will stand her ground, even if it's against the only person who can help her family right now. That slap felt so good!

I agree that SH is an intriguing and complex character. He obviously loved EH and the feelings were mutual. So, he is definitely grieving somewhere inside, but he can't let anyone know since he's already a married man and there are other things that he's gotta stay focused on for his plotting to work. I think it's only a matter of time before he falls for JS.

MW is slowly opening up his heart as well, especially in that scene when he noticed JS crying while sleeping on the couch. The handkerchief gesture was touching coming from someone who normally doesn't seem to care with his cold front. Not to mention, he actually thought JS was genuinely helping him when shopping with that VIP wife though he was disappointed when JS accepted the 1%. The saving JS from Scar's almost-car slam plus helping to search for her mom are very touching as well, meaning it's already out-of-character for MW. That end scene was the highlight for me for this ep.

So, JS has a dead unni named Jieun... I don't know if I like this storyline if it turns out EH and JS are really related. But for now, I'm liking the development.

Oh, that ending...it was magical! And brilliant! The symbolism of JJH's red suit (love) and cherry blossoms (love blossoms, my take), coupled with great acting on both sides, background music, and great lighting made it. It feels like waking up to a beautiful, beautiful dream. I love this show.

@ Lisa
Poor Min Woo is such a broken child and so used/abused by his lousy father, that any possibility of someone being nice is a wonder to him. He hopes that JS is genuine and that if nothing else, she'll be a good business partner. So heart-breaking that that's as far as he dares to hope at this stage.... he does not dare to find in her a friend, a comrade or a caring family member, but one with whom a deal is made... so they must each stand by their end of the bargain ...

... As in when he reminds her that she clearly said she'd do anything he wants if he helped her. But I love it when she said "I'll play dead if you want" and he says "No need for that!" Stirrings of interest already?

Actually I think he must be surprised that she is very different from the aloof and arrogant Eun Ha. Once he can dare to trust in whom the real person his wife is, I hope he can let go of his brokenness and let himself be loved.

Hi GB!

It really is saddening to see how broken MW is that someone being kind is NOT the norm but an exception. =( That's why I think he will become more and more drawn to JS as he discovers how warmhearted she is and how she will stand up for her beliefs. Also, she will likely be the one to keep breaking down that deal because she doesn't want to have such a business relationship where they only talk about personal gain from each other.

Yes, I liked that interaction as well. It's like he doesn't need her to go as far as dying. LOL

I agree. I think she will be very different than his expectations of EH and will be willing to actually give JS a chance because he has such a huge gap in his heart right now. JS will be the one to fill that, and also to protect him from all the evil family members plus the doctor.

When he sends her to the couch I thought it was a very rude thing to do, but then i remembered the comments of LollyPip in the last recap and all made sense, he wants to alienate her.
I hope that the next episode begins the alliance between Ji-sook and Min-woo. They need someone to watch each others back and of course fall in love.

I love/kinda hate Seok-hoon. Yeon Jung-Hoon is great as a villan and I enjoyed so much when Ji-sook slapped him. The only thing I missed its his smile. I love it but here there is no much room for him to smile

Thanks LollyPip! Your recap helped me understand better the bits and pieces that did not gel for me.

I like the camera work/cinematography in this show.

There's an interesting shot at the beginning with SH and JS talking. Seok Hoon is in an arm chair, leaning back and waxing lyrical about how JS's father courted death over money and she chose death over her father... the camera pans to include the shadows like bars over him and behind his chair - as if he is in prison.

And yes, like other(s) who've noticed it... the Cherry blossoms scenes which can be evocative and romantic. Only that cherry blossom petals seem to get Min Woo into a frenzy over dirt LOL.

It's no wonder that many of us are more interested in SH and JS together. Their scenes are so fraught with tension (almost sexual) and even poetic, verging on but not quite romantic. For instance:
He says, "We're living in hell now, we can make heaven together" The "We" is almost swoon-worthy... and I agree now thinking over it, what you say about him sort of hoping or asking her to be his partner sounds right.

So like I said ... no wonder we are practically rooting for the wrong couple to be the OTP. The leads actually appear to be SJH and SE with JJH as 2nd lead almost.

It's even almost romantic that SH tells her to "Make him... " keep his promises. Then I love how she turns this around later in the car saying it's all his fault ... so she puts the blame back on him where it belongs.

I also love the way she retorts in the face of his threats ... he tells her, "Think rationally... if you return to your old life you'll live as a murderer. You should think of your family". and she says "No, I'm going to find my mother. Then you can do the thinking". *Go girl!*

And when he's injured, again she dares to leave an almost threat in the air, "I can kill you too. You and I are not different". This is actually such a passionate exchange, it's a pity that it's taking place between people who claim to want to kill each other! LOL!

The other thing I'm enjoying so much is the unexpected hilarity...

Min Woo tells her to "Go wash up..." and she thought he meant that there would be some couple action once they are both clean! LOL! And she did come out in a bathrobe too.... only to be shown the couch. :D

And what you, LollyPip said, "Ji-sook says she knows where her mother is, and jumps up to beg Min-woo’s help. He agrees, but mostly to get her to stop hanging off his pants leg." Hahaha! I didn't see it that way at first, but, yeah. That was a pretty compelling reason to agree to help.

I'm so glad to see you and everyone here enjoying this show with me!

I find SH's random bursts of stupidity very weird. When JS asked him if he found her mom, there was no reason to lie. He could have just told her she hadn't been found but he had people out looking. She's soft hearted and loving but logical and if he tells her that 'look I've got better resources and abilities than you, I'll make sure to find her' (which might not be true but is atleast a better idea than telling her outright that mom's been found), she'll listen to him. He shot himself in the foot for no reason!

0

Required fields are marked *

Hmmm... maybe it was not actually stupidity but ego/pride or something that got him to not admit to failing (or appearing to fail) or being slow about it. It might have been a calculated risk. If she accepted his words unquestioningly, it would mean she was trusting him more. If she did not and rebelled, then he would get rid of her... so maybe it was an indirect test. Then again, if he had told her that he had not found her mum but was in the process of doing so,... would it have made any difference to her. She'd probably have gone anyway to find her mum herself. He probably guessed what she would do, so the lie was a calculated one.

It could also be a flaw in his character, that he always has to appear in the right and successful. Which begs the question... if he was really the one behind the drugging of the wine bottle after all? ... then when it backfired, he would refuse to admit it and just go on to an alternative plan? Just wild guesswork, but somehow, I can't put down his 'mistakes' to stupidity too easily.

Even when injured and down, he had to bait JS still. He had to have that one-upmanship... I can kill you but you can't kill me... THAT was just asking for trouble from someone who would have found relief in his death, but was it a stupid mistake? If he had begged her to help, would it have made a difference?

I think I'm liking this more than I should. There, I said it.

I remember Secret being crazily addictive, but mainly because of Bae Soo-bin, who played the evil streak really well. I could't get myself to like Ji-Sung's character though, who was just plain annoying as the typical chaebol typecast with nothing better to do than stalk the poor woman.

But with this one, I find myself getting invested on all fronts. The characters have a lot more substance, the plot a lot more intelligible, and the villain a lot more compelling.

I also like that the female lead is a lot more in control of her fate as opposed to being a mere victim of her circumstances, as was the case in Secret. Soo Ae is doing a grand job of striking a balance between vulnerability and strength.

Five episodes in, and I haven't once gotten irritated with any of the characters, and that's a first! I couldn't say the same for dramas like Secret, or Baker Kim Tak Gu. Still, it's early days, and my cut off point in when characters do start driving me potty - but so far, I have faith in the writer to continue delivering the goods!

This is turning out to be my crack drama year-to-date.

Secret was crazy melodramatic but very addictive. The writer has improved in this one. So far, it has all the right elements of melo without making viewers tear their hair out in frustration.

Like @namedx said, I think Bae Soo-bin was awesome as the villain in Secret. He let in on how his character made the wrong first step and got sucked in further and further. A well written villainous character is one which you can understand why and how he had gone so wrong and shudder at the fine line that most people walk between right and wrong choices. I have yet to see that in the character Seok Hoon.

I liked Joo Ji Hoon in Antique Baker but never watched his dramas. I think he is doing a great job here. I am sure I am in the minority of not liking Ji Sung in Secret. Maybe it has got to do with how his character was written. I couldn't feel any sparks between the 2 leads. This time, however, I can't wait for Min Woo and Ji Sook to fall in love.

Waving at @Growingbeautifully and @TurkishroseHealer!! Well here we are again, drawn to an exceptionally well-written drama. I almost didn't watch this one - have been quite bored with the rest going on right now (except for Orange Marmalade) but - WOW - am I ever glad I started Mask. It's deep, smart, and quite dark in a way which surprised me. The acting is intense and the characters are all so interesting. Here's what I like the most: the set-up of the relationship between Min Woo and Ji Sook is bound to lead into a powerful love between them - because how much more awful could it be than in the beginning? Min Woo's behavior borders on terrifying and is he ever in for a shock when her steady sweetness tears him apart and puts him back together again. I think we're in for a great love story! I've been trying to think of what it reminds me of and it's "A Love to Kill" when Rain had every reason to try to trick Eun-suk but her essential goodness overwhelmed his hatred and the love they discovered together was Kapow!!!! Mask has that kind of potential, I think. Wherever it takes us, I'm in!!

Yes, the potential for a great romance is in the air, which is the super magnet. And in the love triangle here, where everyone has chemistry among our 3 leads, the added feature is that the villain is so layered and interesting, we even root for him!!!

I did like A Love to Kill up to a point, but began to find it draggy when the OTP was separated and of course the ending was a bit inexplicable...

dare i say that this drama is living up to expectations ? a dark horse, if i ever saw one - especially with the other "masked crusader " drama competing ! wildly entertaining - I 'd bet Seon-Hoon has likely never had his heart pumping so much with the antics of Ji Sook and having to run all over town in his impeccable suit as a Prosecutor? (incidentally - he was also acting as a prosecutor in "vampire prosecutor" (2013).With all his shadowing of her every move, he should seriously consider appointing himself her bodyguard! really curious what his whole grand plan is. so he wants to be the next head of SJ holdings? first, marry the chaebol's daughter, then scheme to make brother in law heir appear deranged and a murderer so he can take over as son in law heir? sounds too simplistic for this sleek production, i must say. Surely the writer of "secret" has more tricks up his sleeves to keep us hooked? Min woo has not impressed me with his acting so far... hmm... i actually find it hard to sympathise with him. He needs a plan! He is living in the same house with some one out to make him go mad and he is totally clueless? He has to up his game to contribute to the plot and not just be a (good looking) sitting duck . Su Ae is great - loved how she escaped through the window with the knotted bedsheets while Scar sat in his scar looking straight ahead haha

Min Woo is amazing and so HOOT...
The villain is very smart manipulative and truly a baddie...
Ji Sook is one hell of an actress she is doing a phenomenal job in conveying her character’s emotions...

I really like the pace of the drama plus the storyline gets more intriguing with each new episodes i can't wait to see more of it including the romance as i am rooting for JS&MW i ship them so hard ❤

Me too MW and JS shipper, thought it's SBS still I hope they will deliver us passionate romance and kiss scenes because I think the script demands that, and we have already witnessed the evil husband wife's sizzling chemistry ;)

After FFI, I didn't really have another drama to watch. Then, I came reading DB and started considering to give this a try. Yeah, even though it's a bit late (episode 4 already) haha.

I'm not a fan of complicated and frustrating family conflict in k-drama, indeed. I've decided watching this just because I want to know where the marriage will lead the two main characters into. Maybe I'm a forever fan of such kind or relationship (difficult in the beginning, gradually developing feelings).

But, what important the most is actually the sensation of waiting the episodes each week. Surely, it's thrilling... :)

I felt like Seok Hoon pulling the necklace of Ji Sook's neck was so meaningful. It's like him almost saying: You can own everything, but not my heart! I do feel like he had feelings for Eun Ha. Certainly more than he has for his wife. It's just that his feelings for Eun Ha weren't that strong. But things could change with Ji Sook. I see him softening and falling for her. Unluckily for him...

And may I add how hauntingly beautiful the end of episode 4 is? Wow - talk about great cinematography and directing.

Oh yes yes YES! Am loving this drama. Just watched ep 5 on VIKI and had to come back here to 4 and dance a little jig. This show is a winner. The development of the romantic tension is just superb!!

This drama is very well cast. Soo-Ae, Yeon Jung-hoon really both carry this show. Nuanced performances. Normally that would be enough to put a show over the top, but the rest of the cast is surprisingly strong.
