Mask: Episode 13

The web of lies is unraveling at a shocking rate of speed, and nobody will left untouched by the horrors of the truth. But even in the middle of chaos, Min-woo and Ji-sook are falling in love, and a declaration will be made that, should it be accepted, could change the whole game in their favor.

EPISODE 13: “A Proposal and a Divorce”

Mi-yeon witnesses Seok-hoon laying Eun-ha’s necklace on Ji-sook’s resting place, and realizes that Eun-ha did die, the day that she fell into the pool. Mi-yeon shakes in fear, as it hits her that she’s a murderer.

Ji-sook reads Eun-ha’s diary, focusing on the words, “Could I really kill Choi Min-woo?” It goes on to say, “If I don’t, Seok-hoon will eventually murder Choi Min-woo.” There’s a card for a lawyer stuck in the pages.

The day after the party, Min-woo remembers giving Ji-sook her new wedding ring, and whines to Chang-soo that he left something out of his presentation. He forgot to ask her to marry him! Chang-soo points out the obvious flaw in this thinking, that they’re already married, but Min-woo says that was a business deal. He wants to propose for real, “before it’s too late.” Less than three minutes in, and I’m already swooning.

Mi-yeon tells Seok-hoon that she went to the doctor, and it turns out she’s not pregnant. The fertility hormones she’s been taking caused a false positive on the home test. Seok-hoon makes the appropriate noises, that they can try again, but Mi-yeon says she doesn’t trust her doctor, and that she’ll just wait and go to the hospital when it’s time to give birth next time.

Seok-hoon tries to put away all the baby things that Mi-yeon bought, but she gets a bit frantic and forbids him to touch them. She takes out a tiny baby shirt and starts to cry that it’s her fault that “she” died, thinking of Eun-ha, and refusing to accept comfort from her husband when he thinks she means the baby.

Papa Choi is happy with Ji-sook these days, and offers her a job running the company’s coffee franchise. Min-woo points out that it loses money every year, not wanting to see her held responsible if she can’t turn it around. But Ji-sook happily agrees, promising to do her best.

Not to be outdone, Mi-yeon also asks for a promotion at her job. Papa Choi is surprised that she actually wants to work, so she admits she’s not actually pregnant. She tells her father that she wants to work to get her mind off of her loss. Everyone comforts her, but when Ji-sook steps forward, Mi-yeon snaps at her not to touch her.

In their room, Min-woo asks Ji-sook to forgive his sister for yelling, and tells her not to worry too much about the coffee franchise. She disagrees and says that she needs to do well, seeming pretty optimistic about this project. After she leaves, Min-woo finds a photo of Ji-sook with her family, and wonders if it’s her “nanny’s” family.

Seok-hoon would like for Mi-yeon to take the day off, but she’s determined to go to work. She coldly instructs him to look at a picture on her phone, and he freezes to see the photo of himself and Eun-ha in their apartment. Mi-yeon says that she’s been assuming Eun-ha (Ji-sook) really didn’t remember their relationship after her accident, and that’s how she’s been living here like nothing was wrong.

She repeats Seok-hoon’s words that she needs to believe his lies if she wants to win this game, but she refuses to believe them anymore. Now she knows that the person who believes them is actually the loser.

Ji-sook decides her new coffee franchise needs a near-complete overhaul, and that she’ll be in charge of marketing. She also decides to donate ten percent of profits to a charitable foundation they’ll establish, to help people pay for schooling and hospital bills.

Her plans get a lot of press, and Seok-hoon asks what she’ll do if her family sees her face in the papers. She doesn’t see the problem, since Byun Ji-sook is dead, and I see her point — they were doppelgangers before, so why should she pretend any different now? Nothing has changed just because one of them died.

Min-woo is so adorably proud when he sees Ji-sook in an online article, and plants copies in the copy machine for others to find. He’s all, “Whaaat, I had no idea!”… then Mi-yeon blabs that he made the copies, HAHA. She tells Min-woo that she’s holding a training session today, and invites him to come support Ji-sook.

Scar reports to Seok-hoon about the training session, and it’s sounding pretty fishy. Mi-yeon deliberately invited Ji-sook’s former coworkers, Min-woo, and Ji-sook herself. Seok-hoon recalls Mi-yeon yelling that he should support her no matter what, even if she kills a person. He mutters that this is a truth he never wanted to know, but orders Scar to investigate Mi-yeon.

The training session gets underway, and Min-woo is called on the carpet for not practicing his best customer service smile. Ji-sook aegyos him into a half-assed smirk, and again I’m dead from the cute.

During a break Mi-yeon asks to speak privately with Ji-sook, and she asks how she’s so good at faking everything, even smiling. She didn’t used to be able to do that. She asks if her smile for Min-woo was also fake, since she originally said she would go through with the marriage for the money. Mi-yeon tells Ji-sook to smile while she can — she may not be able to forever.

Ji-sook agrees that she originally married for money, but that she feels guilty now. She says she wants to be happy with Min-woo, and graces Mi-yeon with one of those smiles that she can’t quite tell is sincere or not.

The store employees exclaim over how much Ji-sook looks like, well, herself, since they think she’s Eun-ha. Min-woo overhears and asks what they’re talking about — who does his wife look like? They easily spill the beans, but are interrupted when Ji-sook and Mi-yeon return. I do NOT like that sneer on Mi-yeon’s face one bit.

Ji-sook stops to talk to her old friends on her way out, to reinforce her Eun-ha persona with them, and she thoroughly charms them. She’s convincing enough that they switch from being fixated on how similar the two women looked, to accepting that she is Eun-ha, and Ji-sook is gone.

But a seed of doubt has been planted in Min-woo’s mind, and he can’t shake his employees’ comments about his wife resembling their deceased friend. He tries to tell himself it’s not important, and offers Maid Yeon-soo a bonus to be Ji-sook’s assistant and help her open the coffee shop.

Ji-sook tells Min-woo that she wants to create exclusive coffee recipes for the shop, and he offers to take her somewhere for inspiration. He’s not nearly as smooth as he’d like to think, and she’s totally onto him, hee. She tweaks his nose a little by suggesting they all go, and he can’t oppose it since he did suggest it as work-related.

Mi-yeon finds the employee who altered the CCTV clip of Eun-ha’s death to ask if it can be restored, but he swears he deleted everything, and it’s not possible. She gives him a fat envelope, and reminds him that he’ll be in serious trouble if anyone finds out about this.

But on her way out, Scar takes photos of her and the employee leaving the restaurant together. In turn, he’s being watched by Director Shim, who wonders what Seok-hoon is up to now. Scar reports back to Seok-hoon about the employee, who was a security guard in charge of the pool but suddenly quit working for the family a month ago.

Ji-sook’s family visit her new coffee shop, which somehow now belongs to them. Apparently they were paid a lavish amount for their tiny shop, and now own this one — possibly they bought a franchise store. Ji-hyuk tells Mom not to worry about anything but getting healthy, and let them worry about the business.

Myung-hwa, Ji-sook’s old coworker, comes to congratulate them, and Mom says that Ji-hyuk’s been complaining that she doesn’t visit enough, making Ji-hyuk stammer and blush, hee. Ji-sook watches from a nearby hiding place, happy to see her loved ones taken care of.

Later she meets with Ji-hyuk, who updates her on the family goings-on. He downplays Mom’s illness, and gives her a gift of a new watch, since she’s always had worn-out ones. He also brought her a cute little bento lunch that Mom made, and Ji-sook nearly cries over the tastes of her mother’s cooking.

Min-woo goes clothing shopping for Ji-sook, for the business trip. Chang-soo holds up all the outfits to himself, as Min-woo tries to picture Ji-sook wearing them, ha. Min-woo complains about every outfit, but then decides, “It will look good on her, though.” Oh man, he is SO in love.

Scar intercepts the former security guard, Young-tae, for a talk, and the man panics and runs. Director Shim, who’s been following Scar, tells his lackey to follow the guard… but he accidentally hits Young-tae with his car. They flee the scene, and Scar follows Young-tae to the hospital.

Scar calls Seok-hoon to tell him that Young-tae is still unconscious, and Seok-hoon doesn’t look one bit happy. He looks at his and Mi-yeon’s wedding photo for a long moment, then smashes it. In his desk he’s got a picture of himself and Eun-ha at his graduation, and remembers a conversation where she’d begged him to let go of his need for revenge.

Seok-hoon also has photos of Ji-sook, and one of her and Min-woo on their wedding day. In his mind’s eye it changes into a picture of himself and Eun-ha on a wedding day that had never occurred, and tears fill his eyes.

Seok-hoon stops Ji-sook and Min-woo on their way in that night, but he seems unable to speak, and Mi-yeon grabs her brother for a talk, too. She asks about the rumors of a woman who supposedly looked just like his wife, wanting to know if his wife knows about this woman — but Min-woo wants to talk about the photo he found in his room, wondering if Mi-yeon left it there. He says he’s happy with Ji-sook, and asks Mi-yeon not to ruin it.

Seok-hoon angrily reminds Ji-sook of who she is, though he seems to need more convincing that she isn’t Eun-ha than she does. He calls her a fake and says she’ll never be as good as Eun-ha, and that she doesn’t deserve to live a happy life. Ji-sook just gives him a Mona Lisa smile, and says that she is the real Eun-ha.

Later Ji-sook tries on one of the dresses Min-woo bought, and laughs at his cheesy line about whether the flower is the dress, or her. She scratches his back (to get rid of the shivers from his corny line) and hits a ticklish spot, and his loud whoop of laughter startles them both, HA.

Min-woo gathers his composure and says they may need to change the contract they made when they got married, and Ji-sook readily agrees. The first thing they take out is the line forbidding skinship (hooray!), and move on to the rule about not interfering in each other’s personal lives. Min-woo sneaks in a clause that they both will sleep in the bed — and what do you know, it’s bedtime. Double hooray! Min-woo practically dives into the bed, and I swear he all but leers at Ji-sook. ~giggle~

Seok-hoon also lays in bed looking at his wife, but his thoughts center on her words from the day of Eun-ha’s accident, that he should be on her side even if she killed a person. Mi-yeon’s thoughts race too, remembering Seok-hoon crying at Eun-ha’s resting place.

The team goes on their working vacation, and Min-woo sternly reminds everyone this is work, not fun. He and Ji-sook cutely tease each other for their amount of luggage — since this is work they shouldn’t need nice clothes. Min-woo runs to Chang-soo and kicks him in the butt, literally, to get him to leave with everyone else so he and Ji-sook are “forced” to drive alone together.

He makes a stop to get Ji-sook a new pair of sunglasses, and though she complains that she has plenty, he counters that she doesn’t have any that he picked out for her. In the car he puts on his own, and HAHAHA, they’re a matching pair to the ones he bought Ji-sook. Min-woo bought couple sunglasses. I’m dying.

Young-tae, the former security guard, is finally awake and Seok-hoon visits him in the hospital. Young-tae kneels in supplication as he admits that he does in fact still have the original tape, falling all over himself to apologize for blackmailing Mi-yeon. Seok-hoon demands to know where the tape is now.

The team arrives at a cute little country bungalow, and Min-woo finds himself the target of four identical pouts when she calls an immediate meeting. Ji-sook suggests a meal first, and even tells Min-woo to cook for them. He makes a big show out of it, and Ji-sook even takes pictures. Min-woo is so proud of himself, nobody has the heart to tell him the food is awful.

Mi-yeon confronts Young-tae next, and asks why he didn’t tell her there was still a tape of that day. She’s curious if his accident was really an accident, but he can’t say for sure that someone didn’t hit him on purpose. Mi-yeon calls Seok-hoon and frantically begs him not to watch the tape, but it’s too late. He’s already seen her let Eun-ha drown.

In a daze, Seok-hoon walks by the pool and remembers his part in the events of that day, when he’d pulled Eun-ha’s body out of the pool and tried to revive her, with no luck. He breaks down and sobs on his knees, as memories of their happier times flood his mind.

Mi-yeon arrives home in time to witness Seok-hoon’s breakdown, and on his desk she finds a photo of Ji-sook in his wallet. It’s the photo of her in her department store uniform, name tag clearly visible, and Mi-yeon tears it up in fury.

Min-woo somehow convinces his employees to air their grievances against him, and Ji-sook’s big complaint is that he’s too tall and hogs all the attention from strangers when they’re together. He promises to do his best to shrink for her, hee. In turn, he says he’s got a problem with her smile — it makes him lose his mind. Which is fine for him, but he doesn’t like it’s affect on others.

Min-woo gets a call from a furious Mi-yeon, who announces that she needs to tell him something about the woman he’s with. Thank goodness, he hangs up on her, and he and Ji-sook go out while everyone else is busy drinking.

They walk to a pretty little creek with stepping stones, and Min-woo admits that in ten years, this is the first time he’s done something like this with his employees. He says he actually planned this because he wanted to talk to her about something he’s never been able to tell anyone.

Min-woo turns serious, and says that his mother died because of him. In flashback we see them running from someone, and he’d stopped to pick up the necklace his mother had dropped. He’d fallen and landed in the river, and his mother had jumped in to save him, losing her life in the process.

His voice quivers as he says that someday, the water will swallow him, too. Until then, it follows him, and he’ll never be able to cross to the other side.

Ji-sook smiles and steps out onto the stepping stones, saying that she’s not sure if she can cross to the other side, either. She invites him to take just one step — because who cares if they can’t cross all the way, or if it takes a long time? What matters is that they cross together.

She holds her hand out to Min-woo, and with a sigh, he takes her hand. She urges him to just try to take another step, and not to be scared, because she’s with him. He takes a few halting steps, and next she tells him to take the lead and she’ll follow. Together they cross the water, growing more confident as they learn to lean on each other.

Later they thank each other for giving them someone to trust, Ji-sook adding that if it weren’t for him, she wouldn’t have made it this far. Min-woo takes their marriage contract out of his jacket, and says he wants to change it again — none of the clauses are valid any longer. He rips it up and throws the pieces, and asks, “Will you be my real wife, Seo Eun-ha?”

But before she can answer, Mi-yeon arrives, having driven all the way here determined to have her say. She ignores a call from Seok-hoon, who’s found the photo of Ji-sook that she tore to shreds, and strides towards Min-woo and Ji-sook with angry purpose.

COMMENTS

Have I mentioned lately how much I lovelovelove this show??? No, it’s not perfect, and yes it’s a bit overly dramatic, but I don’t care — it’s wonderful and addictive and just plain FUN. The generous amount of funny and/or heartfelt scenes within the dramatic plot keep things from becoming too mired in gloom and doom, and I loved that this episode was mostly funny and heartfelt. We needed that after the drama of the last few weeks, and I have a feeling we’re about to be back to gloom and doom very soon, so it was nice to take a little break and watch Ji-sook and Min-woo falling in love.

I feel like this recap got a little squeeful in places, but I mean, how cute are these two?? I love that, unlike how some dramas give their characters a complete personality makeover once they fall in love, Ji-sook and Min-woo haven’t really changed all that much. She’s still warm and generous, he’s still grumpy and stuffy. But they’re softening and opening up with each other, even in front of others, and I’m loving every second of it. Min-woo is even making jokes! And he’s actually funny! I love the dry wit he’s turning out to possess, and I adore that Ji-sook plays right along with him. They’re so perfect together.

But the secrets have gotten so big they can’t be kept anymore, especially not when someone as hurt and angry as Mi-yeon is now onto Ji-sook. I feel as though part of her determination to out Ji-sook as an impostor is pure and simple jealousy — why should Ji-sook have a happy marriage when Mi-yeon can’t? Especially when she’s not even the person she’s supposed to be. I had hoped, for one brief moment, that Mi-yeon would be happy to discover that Ji-sook wasn’t really Eun-ha and possibly even be a friend to her, but the realization that Mi-yeon killed Eun-ha, intended or not, put a plug in that. Mi-yeon has gone past the point of having a healthy relationship with anyone now, and while I hate to see it happen, I’m afraid she’ll only turn more bitter and angry as time goes on.

And she’s not even the one I’m most worried about — Seok-hoon is about to blow sky high. He was already becoming unstable as his control over Ji-sook, and the entire situation by extension, started to unravel. Ji-sook isn’t even intimidated by him anymore, much less scared and malleable as she used to be, and he’s realizing that he’s not going to get what he wants this way. He’s not the kind of man to let a loose end go unattended, and he’s shown a willingness to kill through his plan to kill Min-woo, and his actual murder of Jung-tae. And now that he’s lost control of Ji-sook and learned that Mi-yeon is responsible for Eun-ha’s death, I’m frankly terrified for both women. He seems dangerously close to going off the rails completely, and while I don’t think he’s confusing Ji-sook with Eun-ha yet, I’m afraid he will soon. When he was calling her a fake, it seemed more as though he were trying to remember that for himself, not for her. My only hope is that his rage and grief will cause him to make mistakes, and they’ll be able to use those mistakes to get the better of him.

This drama is ruining my life !!!! Mi-yeon... I feel sorry for her for some reason. Su Ae looked so beautiful in that bridge scene !!! They're falling in love and it's going to be so so so bad when Min-woo find out about Ji-sook real identity, it's going to break his heart, drive him crazy (for real this time). I don't know if I want to see this happened. Seok-hoon is so evil and scarily crazy, I can't even feel sorry for him anymore.

I don't think so. they've mostly slept in separate beds up until this point, and since their growing closer as a couple is so important in the story, show would definitely make a big deal of them consummating their marriage. like, if it had happened,we would know

Just NO amnesia and NO noble idiocy, please? I would even be okay if someone got in a car accident as long as there is NO amnesia or NO noble idiocy.

And I haven't watch the next episode, so if one of these 3 things happens, this is NOT a spoiler.

Okay?

Thank you so much for giving me another platform to squeal about this show. It's been established that there's nothing new in the storyline. What's new (and endearing) is the actors who have given new life to tired characters. I giggled, smiled, and squeal as I watched MW and JS. They are so adorable! I'm so worried about the impending angst.

I completely agree with you, LollyPip when you say MY's reaction is plain jealousy. Jealousy that a seeming nobody can get the kind of love and devotion that JS gets. The final straw for MY is that the one person who she desperately wants to love her, SH, is also falling in love with JS as JS not as Eun Ha. I also agree with you that I had initially hoped that MY would come to be a good friend and cheerleader for JS when she finds out that she isn't Eun Ha. I mean your SIL sleeping with your husband is a pretty good reason to hate a person. I can't believe she let Eun Ha die like that. That's murder plain and simple. And she was prepared to let her brother take the fall. She finally tipped the bucket with the hate directed at JS who by her own admission isn't keeping an illicit affair with her husband.

I felt a little pinch of sympathy for SH here. Note to all "revengers", every vengeful act always carries a price. His so far is his love. If only he had walked away. He could be happily married to Eun Ha.

I definitely love min woo n ji sook pairing!!! Writer-nim, just make sure that in the end they will be together. Hahahahaha :D both of them are so sweet. Finally they're more open to each other. And they want to truly appreciate and love each other. ♥♥♥

I'm not sure how I should react to seok hoon character. Hmm. One moment I want to pity him but then again I can't. He's good portraying the character since I almost pity him. Maybe I will in the upcoming episodes.

Miyeon character somehow had disappoint me? I thought she would at least be more rational. Turns one she really need helps from professional for her mental health. Period.

I literally squealed everytime I see them together cause I know were in for something special. And I hope we won't dwell with the angst for the coming episodes - cause I can see them coming lol - because we want some sexy times between them right? Cmon show, where are our kisses??!!

MY will stop at nothing to bring JS down. Soek Hoon needs to keep a tight lid on his wife or at least be couple of steps ahead of her. This woman's claws are out at full force.

So cute to see JS always ended up getting things her way (modifying the contract just to name one) with Min Woo or he always gives in when it comes to her. ❤️

Hope all works out between the luvbirds. He knows that she has something important to tell him when time comes. Min Woo, brace yourself for what's coming your way.

We'll all be here with ya, probably with a box of kleenex.

I just can't with Min-woo...I smile everytime he's onscreen, he's such a perfect husband. ^_^ I really hope he'll listen to JS's explanation when the truth about her identity comes out and not get mad at her deception. I just want them to be happy & make make a baby ASAP.

Whatever little sympathy I had for Miyeon in the previous episodes is now gone. I was hoping she'd be on JS's side but what can one expect from a jealous, insecure and probably mentally unstable wife. Seok-hoon is making me root for him again. I almost teared up when he cried after he found out how Eun-ha died.

Hi @Giegie

I am a little sad for MY. I did have such hopes for her. She could have helped bring down Seok Hoon instead of becoming a madder baddie herself. :( Definitely she could have been on Team Ji Sook since they are not competing for the same man, but sigh!

It's strange that in the beginning SH was this all pervasive evil force that let nothing stand in his way, but now he's more like a wounded animal (I cannot call him puppy), getting pushed around by Shim, JS and to an extent MY.

He used to have this aura of being practically inhuman in his delusions, but now he is shown to be very human and almost endearing. It's hard to know how to feel about him. Maybe we are meant to be torn in our attitudes towards him. :)

Hello @GB

I thınk I understand what MY is doing now. She & Jisook may not be competing for the same man but she's the reason Eunha died. She let her die. She knows Seok-hoon will not let her off the hook now that he knows the truth and there is no way now she and evil husband can have a happy marriage, which is what she wanted from the beginning, after killing his beloved. So why help Jisook bring down SK and have a happy life with Minwoo when she will end up alone and possibly in jail in return. Jisook is her enemy's doppelganger after all.

Seok-hoon's feelings? for Jisook is maybe to blame for his change? He's starting to confuse her with EH. Picture of JS instead of EH in his wallet is a clear sign. I really don't know but I kind of feel for him in this episode. And don't worry evil SK will be back next episode and he'll take care of Shim once and for all. ;)

It's so cute to see how JS gets her ways (ie. modifying the marriage contract, needle pricking, applying sun lotion) or Min Woo gives in all the time when it comes to JS. ❤️

"Have I mentioned lately how much I lovelovelove this show???"

You and me both LollyPip! You and me both.

"No, it’s not perfect, and yes it’s a bit overly dramatic, but I don’t care — it’s wonderful and addictive and just plain FUN."

It sure is. Such an apt description of what its like to watch Mask.

"Mi-yeon calls Seok-hoon and frantically begs him not to watch the tape."

The parallels are fascinating to pick up on in Mask. Mi-Yeon listened to Seok-Hoon and didn't watch the video of him murdering Jung-Tae. However, pandora's box is now open since Seok-Hoon couldn't resist watching the video of Mi-Yeon and Eun-Ha at the pool.

"Min-Woo takes their marriage contract...rips it up and throws the pieces."

Don't be a litterbug Min-Woo!

I sure hope we don't get pressed lips, cause with that first kiss, the angle of his head looked like he missed her lips and was pressing on the side of her lips

Yeeeeeeees please i demand a lot of hugs and kisses as the leads chemistry is too good ❤ ❤

Product placement was a bit much in this episode, what with the dresses, and sun glasses...

But I love the concept of couple eyeglasses. As much as I love the scenes of my favorite tv couple: Ji-sook and Min-woo, today's episode felt like a filler one.

I'm soooooooooo depressed because of this show!!!!! I'm going abroad in 2 days for a month and a half. Unfortunately where I'm going, the internet is too slow to watch videos that are longer than 3 minutes. Just the thought of not being able to watch dramas bums me out, but when I think about missing Mask's last episodes, I seriously feel like crap :-(

Yaaay a recap thank you so much lollypip for your wonderful post.
I agree with everything you said!

MASK is being a true gem and continues to hit all the right buttons for me...and good Lord these two are the cutest husband and wife i ever saw in KdramaLand ❤ ❤ ❤ they are soooo freaking adorable i just can't help but love them whole heartedly ❤ ❤ I know Min woo will be very hurt once he learns her true identity but i hope he will forgive her and embrace her for who she really is cause she has been nothing but a great support to him.

MY lost it she really needs help her jealousy is ruinning her!!! I don't know why but i caught myself feeling a bit sorry for evil Seok Hoon in this episode and that's a first!!!! When he broke down near the swimming pool i realized how much he loved Eunha too bad he took the wrong path and chose revenge over love.

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

I adore our OTP!! MW is sooo sooo cute!! I'm squealing right along with you. ^^ And love all of JS's responses!! Can't help but smile and LOL every time this couple is on screen. The changing of the contract terms and ultimate nullification of it all!! Just melted when MW asked JS to be his real wife. The scratching scene was funny. And the matching shades! Haha... The scene of them crossing the waters on the rocks was really touching. MW has finally found the person that he can trust to be vulnerable in front of and bare his heart!! I hope he will remember all these things that JS has done for him and been to him when he realizes that she has been lying about her true identity all along...

I had a feeling MY's pregnancy was a false alarm... Even though I had thought she might have cared for MW as a brother in earlier ep's, now it's obvious she only cares about herself. Now, she's out to bring down JS. She's just like the type of person who'd rather drag someone else down to be as miserable as she is instead of being happy for someone else... =X

SH watched this CCTV!! In contrast to his request to MY not to watch the video on the watch, he has gone on to watch the swimming pool scene. Well, he finally knows who murdered his beloved EH. MY has definitely reached his bottom line and that's scary... There's no telling what he will do now at all costs, especially since he can't control JS either and he's confusing JS and EH.

I love CS... Bromance is always good and CS & MW are so funny together!! Can't stop LOL-ing during the dress selection scene. XD

@ Lisa

I loved the nullification of everything in the contract, starting with the bits that bothered MW the most LOL! the lack of skinship and the sleeping together had to go first!!! :D I also mentioned some of your fave scenes in my comment below... especially about that river crossing... so poignant and meaningful for their relationship and their entire marriage.

About MY with MW as her brother... I felt that at least when he said to her he is happy with JS and not to ruin things for him, she paused and kept quiet. Sometimes the better side of her emerges, only to be damped down by her worse side. I hope we get to see her struggling to be better than her emotions let her, and that she does not go all delulu now that she's got less to lose.

I felt that SH was partially warning JS not to think she is Eun Ha and partially convincing himself that she isn't. Her new attitude and ability to answer back without fear is getting him confused.

And yes, I love the 'CS-MW' bromance more than many others I've seen. The great unbending of the stiff MW is a joy to see. :)

Hahaha!! GB, that's so true!! First, MW was sooo against any skinship and sleeping in same bed, now he can't wait to have these two things!! LOL I just love their relationship blossoming and how they trust each other and want to protect each other.

MY was probably quiet at first when she thought she still had a chance to work things out with SH, and she thought the baby might help. But now that SH knows she murderer EH, all bets are off!! Not to mention, that pic of JS in SH's wallet seems to suggest he isn't as emotionally distant from JS as MY might have thought... Now, she's basically: If I can't be happy with SH, I'm also gonna make sure JS will not be happy with MW.

CS is so precious!! Love the way MW responds to him every time, and it always somehow has to do with CS pretending to be JS. XD

It seems counter productive for Mi Yeon to expose Ji-sook as a fraud, isn't she even thinking?! What happens when people start asking what happened to the real Eun Ha? I would have thought she would do all she can to hide the fact that she killed the real Eun Ha, but I guess she doesn't care anymore now that Seok Hoon knows what she has done.

Poor Seok Hoon, the show is doing a good job of humanizing him. I feel a little sorry for Seok-hoon, he must know his love died as a result of his actions. But it shows he cares for his wife, because he refused to entertain the possibility that Seo Eun-ha died because of his wife, until the evidence was too glaring to ignore. What a tangled web. I believe he truly cared for and loved Eun ha, but he's not above viewing her as collateral damage and proceeding with his plan. And he's a ruthless guy equally capable of evil things also, like murder.

I love that the show gives us layered, multifaceted, complex villians, Mi Yeon and Seok-hoon are equally well matched. Bring it on show.

@ Adal

I too feel that MY is no longer thinking rationally. She's just acting on her emotions - disappointment, resentment, jealousy of EH over SH and jealousy of JS over marriage, and feeling betrayed that SH still loves EH but said he loved her.

It gains her nothing to threaten SH or reveal JS to MW: maybe only a momentary sense of victory or satisfaction, but then everything will come tumbling down. The company was already under investigation before and if this comes out, even Eun Ha's father will no longer support the Choi business. Everyone loses. The only way to keep everything going well is to keep the secrets under wraps.

I've never liked relationships built on hidden truths/lies. I guess what I'd really like is for JS to reveal the truth to MW before he finds out from others. I'd trust him to still love her and forgive her, since he already had an inkling that she might have been blackmailed/threatened into doing things and since she had told him that she was hiding a lot. The truth just cannot reach the public.

Again I ask, what's happened to our big, bad Seok Hoon? Why do we have to worry about troublesome Shim? I feel that he's been placed in the show just in case he is needed and the writer does not know what to do with him currently... to kill him off or let him be. At the moment he has not been given more of a role to play, but he is blackmailing SH and I'm surprised that he's still alive!! Seok Hoon-sshi, you're losing your touch! You should have gotten rid of Shim already!!! LOL!

I don’t think that Min-woo will feel betrayed by Ji-sook, she has already been on the verge of confessing so many times, that Min-woo would have to be blind, deaf, and dumb not to have his suspicions. Recall the time she told him that she was not Seo Eun-ha? It's just that he doesn't want to dwell on those thoughts because she has helped him so much and at so many times, and in so many ways to overcome the obstacles facing him, that he is totally in love with her.

He suspects she is being blackmailed and is not at liberty to reveal the truth. Like he said to Seok-hoon, he is not an idiot because he chooses not to act (my guess is that a big part of his refusing to act can be attributed to his respect for his noona). I suspect he will help Ji-sook hide the truth until she is ready to reveal it, or risk losing her forever, which I'm sure he's not ready to do. My one fear is that she's planning to divorce him to save his life. I hope she doesn't act on that plan before they have a chance to truly talk.

Thanks LollyPip!! That was a good sqee-fest recap and lots of fun to read and it clarified stuff for me that the subs left enigmatic! LOL.

My take on Min Woo when he finds out that Eun Ha is Ji Sook ... (and I'm still thinking that somewhere down the line Ji Sook will end up the only one with a compatible liver for her mum, so it will all be out-ted)... he will have come to trust her so much that it does not matter what her name is. He would have fallen in love with the person whom she genuinely is. He is already certain that she is not acting all along, that she has been genuine with him... therefore I believe he will tend towards believing in the person of Ji Sook rather than in the character part she played. He might also remember that she had honestly tried to tell him that she was not Eun Ha, and she had said she was wearing a mask and had so much to hide.

If he can hold on to remembering how honest she was, how he thought that perhaps she is being threatened by Seok Hoon, etc... he will not just give up on her if at all. And even if the truth gave him a big shock, I believe he'd come around pretty quickly.

My favorite bits of the show were of course all the MW-JS together bits but really, LOL! Chang Soo and Min Woo make a close second!!! Loveliest pairing of boss and secretary I've seen!! Chang Soo playing the part of Ji Sook (previous episode), Chang Soo 'modelling' the clothes... putting them back when MW disapproved only to take them out again ... with that look on his face. I was hooting with laughter (fortunately no one was around). :D

I like Mask a lot, more than I really should given that my usual taste runs to the gritty, dark procedurals and light romantic comedies starring Cha Seung-won and Oh Ji-ho. But it's like there are two stories there. One, between Ji-sook and Min-woo, of a young woman who takes over the life of her doppelgänger for criminal ends and finds love with the man she's meant to fool. And the other, between Seok-hoon and Mi-yeon, of a young man who has been driven borderline psychotic by the evil acts of a chaebol family and marries the daughter of the family only to discover that she's even more psychotic than he is. He spends most of the drama trying to clean up her messes so that he can finally get around to enacting his revenge. I'd like to see a drama like this. It could be a comedy.

What I'd really like to see is Cha Seung-won as the man driven mad by his need for revenge and Oh Ji-ho in the even more psychotic chaebol "daughter" role. Now there would be a light romantic comedy for the ages! A girl can only dream.

My Favorite scenes: ... Which are yours? :)

1) Min Woo saying they should sleep in one bed and when Ji Sook nodded, running to the bed and practically jumping into it and pulling the covers aside for Ji Sook.

2) Chang Soo getting Min Woo to figure out how to do the proposal to Ji Sook by himself and cheering him on, even hitting boss on the arm and boss surprised but accepting that.

3) Ji Sook re-interpreting Seok Hoon's big talk about making heaven together. She agreed but she would do it by donating her shares and helping the less fortunate. *Go Girl!* She even tells SH, "You should donate your shares too!" LOL! the shock on his face.

4) Min Woo's forced smirk at the workshop.

5) JS's ex-colleagues getting the gifts and fault-finding Manager Yeo getting only a wallet while the other two got designer bags. :D

6) JS and Ji Hyuk together, and how he gave her the homemade meal, and her expression. *tearing up just thinking of it*

7) Min Woo being tickled hysterical.

8) Min Woo kicking Chang Soo's backside and everyone scrambling to get into the vehicle before he kicked them too!! LOL!

7) When JS said MW was too tall and he agreed to shrink for her... the OTP were so deadpan about it but the OMG looks on the faces of the others was to die for!!

8) Ji Sook pretending that she needed help to walk on the stones to cross the river so that she could help Min Woo without him losing self-esteem and then letting him lead. Absolutely lovely!!! :)

And no. 8) is just a beautiful metaphor of life and being married. We're all making our life's journey, but in marriage we make it hand-in-hand, one step at a time, leaning on each other and it does not matter how long it takes as long as we do it together. We may start off on the same stone but ultimately even if we walk on different stones, we make the crossing together, still hand-in-hand.

It is a nice parallel to how Min Woo saved Ji Sook from her fall into the water when she lost her ring and a start of his resolution to his fear of water and his trauma at his mother's drowning.

Unfortunately SH and MY are doing the opposite and will practically end up throwing stones at each other rather than using those stones as a path towards a common goal and unity.

@GB
All of the above , but of this list these were the ones that are at the top for me:
1) Loved it! I hoping to see a little more of that scene ;)

2) I thought that part was cute too. I was thinking that maybe MW was seeing that as a gesture of friendship rather that boss employee relationship, which maybe also shocked him.

7) She got a big smile and a big laugh out of him that surprised them both

8) Yes that whole arrangement CS to have the others go first, and when he wasn't moving fast enough, the little backside encouragement Ha!

the other 7) :) Yes, being too tall and him saying he'll shrink for her, and MW wants JS to smile like she does for only him. The others faces were like " gag me" lol

the other 8) The most precious moment. From a work retreat point of view - a great trust building exercise, but for MW and JS, trust building but on a much deeper level. I love that she made him take the lead. They are so good for each other.

**Writers please leave Min-Woo with a level head when he finds out the truth. Don't put him in the same box with all the other dramas out there where because of the one lie, that everything else they shared is a lie too. (I hate it when that happens - they get so irrational) He's got to realize how much she has helped him. Who cares if she is not EW, (in his own words " It's not important"). This woman (JS) is the one who has helped him so much and is the one that he fell in love with. It should answer questions of how the EW that he knew (pre event) could be so caring now. It should also give him relief that this wasn't the woman who BIL had an affair with.

SH saves a photo of JS in his wallet. Does it mean SH has a bit of feeling too for JS so that MY is very jealous and hates JS? Now JS is more an more like EH, so it makes difficult for SH to move on.
I'm sure, the developed story will be more interesting later. SH hates MY because MY has killed his love, Eun Ha. It's very an unforgivable situation for him. MY hates SH because his husband loves other woman. For now, the situation is JS vs SH vs MY. And I am very curious, which side JS will be on or will she be independent only to win this situation?

Required fields are marked *

Nah, I doubt Seok Hoon has any feelings for Ji-sook. His feelings for Eun-ha run too deep. I think he just put Ji-sook's picture in his wallet and left it there. Who knew crazy wife would go digging through his wallet?

Both Seok Hoon and Mi Yeon feel envy at what Ji-sook and Min-woo have. Seok Hoon, because it was the very happiness he would've had with Eun-ha, but he threw away or fate robbed him of it; and Mi Yeon, because her husband doesn't love her and she knows her marriage is built on lies. So she wants to destroy what Ji-sook and Min-woo have. 'If I can't be happy, neither can you!'

On another hand, she knows her husband has ill intent towards her brother. There's no way Seok Hoon would've brought Ji-sook to replace Eun-ha if he was not planning something evil. She doesn't know Ji-sook plans on protecting Min-woo. She doesn't know all the ways Ji-sook has helped her brother, so as far as she knows, Ji-sook is a gold digger out to destroy her brother, in cahoots with her evil husband, and she needs to open Min woo's eyes to the truth. Because Min-woo is too besotted by love to see his wife for what she truly is.

So on another hand, I can't really blame Mi Yeon for trying her damndest to make her brother see the truth. She does care for her brother. She is his noona, after all.

Maybe its good that we havent gotten a second kiss yet. I mean JS wouldnt be comfortable bc she doesnt want to make a commitment with a man who thinks she's someone she's not. MW would definitely be all in for a deeper relationship but he respects her and just needs to wait on her. But its interesting to me that he does the cheesiest things for her but is always surprised when she makes bold statements. Its frankly cute to see his dazed expressions when she does affectionate things.

My favourite scenes were:

3) MW's face when CS lightly patted him on the shoulder. That was funny. His ocd came out there.

4) MW cooking and totally showing off while JS takes pics. And then his little gled seeing her eat his food. And she went along with it for him.

Note: Part of this taken from a blog.

The film is about Princess Usha , who is the owner of a palace. She is murdered by her personal assistant Ajit (Pran) . He has hatches a complicated scheme to amass the princess' house, lands, and inheritance. The key to this scheme? A convenient princess look-alike . . . happy village girl Kiran (Mumtaz) celebrating Diwali with her aging and kind of cute parents.

Of course, in a creepy and terrifying sequence Kiran is separated from the crowd, kidnapped, introduced to her dead doppleganger, framed for the murder of the princess, and blackmailed by way of threatening the sweet parental units.

Kiran is then coerced to play the role of princess until the issue of the pesky inheritance can be sorted out (or rather, sorted into Ajit's bank account). Even though Kiran's real situation is dire, her external situation turns out to be quite unnervingly luxurious. As Ajit constantly reminds her, all she has do is act the part and enjoy the comforts of the good life for a few days.

Kiran also has to pretend to be in love with her fiance and marry him. Not a difficult task seeing she's smitten with the Prince. Unfortunately their relationship is doomed.

Worse case scenario:
The allegations that she is not the real princess will prevent her from getting the inheritance (her ransom for her freedom), her identity will be discovered, the charges of murder lodged against her, her family will die of sorrow, and her now beginning-to-be beloved fiancee will discover who she really is and reject her. Also she might/probably will get snuffed out by Ajit.

Unfortunately, any way she looks at it, it appears that her blooming love story is doomed. But there's no time to waste on ethical or strategic questions. She's got a marriage--of her own--to attend.

I might mention Princess Usha is a swimming champion while her doppelgänger is petrified of water. She nearly drowned in her childhood.

Post marriage the prince finds out she's a fake and tests it by taking her boating. While there she falls overboard and naturally she's drowning and he rescues her. He also discovers a plot to kill him. He believes his wife is in cahoots with Ajit.

He fakes his death via a plane accident. His wife goes mad with grief. She pretends to seduce Ajit in order kill him. All this is witnessed by the prince which further strengthens his misunderstanding.

She gets into an car accident fortunately both survive. Kiran gets amnesia. In the end the villain gets his due hero heroine live happily ever after. All the misunderstandings are cleared up.

What I find similar to Mask is

Here the hero has a phobia of water. He nearly drowns in Childhood.

Both Doppelgangers come from poor bagrounds with loving families. Both are introduced to unimaginable luxuries.

They both feature women who choose to do something wrong (pretend to be someone they're not, lie, romance via deception) in order to...

They both feature women who choose to do something wrong (pretend to be someone they're not, lie, romance via deception) in order to achieve something good. Not only does that create the chance for wonderful ethical dilemmas and convoluted relational tight-rope-walking, but it also gives the female characters a chance to bring their "A" game and actually have their efforts mean something.

What Im curious to know is if Mask will go the film way. Will the hero have an accident and will he fake his death or be presumed dead. Will Jisook go mad with grief and take revenge from Sookhyun ?

Most importantly like in the film will Minwoo misunderstand Jisook upon learning of her Identity?

Please share your views. Im interested to know what you all think.

OK... well let's see... let's say MW finds out JS's real identity. Then he should find out as well that it was SH who put her up to it and why she agreed to help SH. If MW continues to trust JS the way he did in the early episodes when he let her go help her brother without insisting on following her, then he will trust her again that she does not want to have him killed.

We had in this episode, two instances of JS either looking pensive and regretful and taking pictures of MW in case she forgets his smile.... there is indication here that she is already foreseeing that she will not long be playing the role of Eun Ha. Maybe she expects that he may want to separate himself from her, once he knows the truth.

Perhaps, to begin with, he may appear to be hurt and so she may leave him, but I feel that he will not let her go for long.

However this is the brief, non-melodramatic version. To fill up the next 5-6 episodes, ... here are the shoulds ... there should be an epic battle between SH and MY over revealing/hiding JS's identity. In that battle, MY will lose out because she can be slammed with a murder charge, but not before MW finds out to his shock that he's in love with someone who could be only after his money. MW should lose it for a bit feeling that he cannot trust anyone and disappears ... to have a makjang element... he gets into an accident and loses his memory. JS has a hard time hunting him down. But now SH wants to kill him and possibly JS too to get all their shares and since JS is not under his thumb anymore. Somehow MW regains his memory, manages to stop SH, decides that he loves JS too much to give up on his marriage and is prepared to forego his family and the family business to live with JS. MY goes fully crazy either in prison or at home. How's that for this story's characters? :D

I cannot envision JS trying to seduce or kill SH, especially if MY is still around, but I guess anything is possible. :)

I only started to like Mask after ep 10. Before that I was watching 2 dramas on 2 tv side by side. From ep 11, I recorded Masked Prosecutor because I was so hooked up with Mask. I have watched Mask ep 13 and 14 multiple times. But haven't watched MP last two episodes. Mask is currently my favourite drama in 2015.

Yeah, I am confused at her motivations and the fact that she has so much to lose if it is revealed that Eun Ha is in fact dead

Oh my gosh!! This drama just keeps getting interesting especially with the teasers at the end of each episode....
I am such a fan of Team JS❤MW....
I always get teary whenever they show their affection for each other... With the kind of relatives they have they sure need each other's support!!!.. I have yet to watch the rest of the episodes (I know,....I've been living under a rock! ) but I sincerely hope that they end up together!!!!....
SK and MY should both get a life...and MW's step-mum too!!!
