Suzy up to headline tvN’s Cheese in the Trap

Huh, so Cheese in the Trap, the highly anticipated webtoon-adapted drama starring Park Hae-jin (Dr. Stranger, You From Another Star), is considering adding Suzy (Gu Family Book) in the leading lady role. Everyone, buckle up for a bumpy ride on the media play train — already reaction is vocal and loud and pretty conflicted.

According to Suzy’s representation at JYP Entertainment, she received the offer for the lead role of Hong-seol and is considering the drama. The production company confirmed sending Suzy the script, but added that “there was no further discussion.” No decisions have been made on either side.

The character is described as an ordinary and thoughtful college student with an occasional tough side. Park Hae-jin signed on to the project early on, and plays the heroine’s sunbae and later boyfriend. He’s the perfect type of guy, boasting good looks, background, education, and style, though he’s also got a mysterious streak and a “dark inner side” behind his kindly face. From what I’ve read of the webtoon, it’s not a dark or shady story so I don’t suppose that he’s quite as sinister as that wording suggests, though maybe webtoon-readers can fill us in on the details.

Already I’m seeing a ton of fan reactions to the casting, with some excited over Suzy’s casting (she IS pretty much the It Girl of her generation, in terms of popularity and starpower) amidst a pretty sizable wave of discontent. It kind of reminds me of the uproar when Yoon-ah was almost cast in Cantabile Tomorrow, which was so negative that everyone quickly backtracked. Like Nodame Cantabile, Cheese in the Trap has a fervent and protective fanbase, and it seems that more people feel Suzy’s not a good image fit than the opposite.

And while I do really like Suzy on a personal level (in that she seems sweet and I have general warm feelings about her as a person), let’s just say her acting ability is perhaps the least of her charms. She can work in cutely funny roles that poke fun at herself, as in Dream High (where they made a whole plot point out of her inability to emote) or even Big, but I always find myself frustrated that she doesn’t connect emotionally with her characters or make me feel for them. I want a heroine who makes me care!

We’ll have to see which way the production team takes this fan response as they continue the casting process. The drama, directed by Coffee Prince and Heart to Heart PD Lee Yoon-jung, will air as a Monday-Tuesday drama on tvN later this year.

She might be a sweet girl but she's a terrible actress. Sorry to her fans but she is not fit for a role like Hong Sul at all.

Even with writers like Park Hae Ryun and Kang Eun Kyung working hard to adjust roles to her limited abilities, she was bad. What hope is there for a role as complex as Sul?

For the Suzy vs. Krystal being the It Girl, I think Suzy got that title in the bag, especially with Miss A's succesful comeback with Only You, and last I heard, Krystal wanted to leave f(x)? Not sure what's the latest on this issue, though. And IMO, Suzy is prettier and has a bigger individual fan base than Krystal, especially abroad.

For her being offered the role, as far as I know, it's not the station's call but the production team (casting director) who decides, so tvN has little or no say about the casting. We shouldn't throw hate to the station. As far as I know, stations simply bid for the scripts or approach the PD or directors to secure the dramas then plot the run in the calendar lineup, and beyond that, everything else is solely the production team's call and decision.

Back to Suzy...well, I am not familiar with the webtoon except for the character descriptions...and if Hongseol is someone who has different layers of emotions, I don't think Suzy is the best choice (or Krystal, if we will be swinging based on the whole It Girl discussion). Plus neither of them would look good with Park Haejin...who I think is a bit old to play a college student, but nonetheless, I have confidence in his acting. I can't really suggest who can do well as Hongseol at the moment since I'll need to read the material first...

Anyway, who ever will be casted, I just hope the drama will be of good quality since the dramas so far this year are not so great. I can count with my two hands the acceptable works of 2015, among which the really commendable works will actually require less than one hand.

Correction, Sulli's the one who wants to leave f(x).
And you may find Suzy prettier, but everyone has their own personal taste. I find both to be EQUALLY pretty but in different ways. Krystal has a more mature vibe to her, while Suzy is more girl-next-door/first love :3

Hongseol isn't a very complex character - I've read a few chapters. She's more of the tough character who's a bit blunt, stubborn and not very bright. She's likable in many ways - she reminds me of Goo Hye Sun's character in Boys Over Flowers in her likable but strong character (but I can't see GHS doing her character). But I agree that Krystal and Suzy don't fit with Park Hae Jin well and don't seem to fit the character description.

I personally really want Go Ara for this production! She hasn't had a lead in a drama for a year so I'm sort of waiting for her comeback. Otherwise, I'd prefer Suzy over Krystal if it really came down to it.
But hopefully the casting directors have other leads in mind > <

Krystal is not even in the ball-park of popularity that Suzy has been.

There haven't been many to attain the level of popularity that Suzy has attained at a young age - others being YEH, MGY and maybe now IU.

I don't have anything against Suzy, but I've read a few chapters of this webtoon. I don't think this character fits Suzy's image to be honest :/

I really want Go Ara for this drama! Image-wise she's perfect, since we know she's able to play gritty and tough (but sweet on the inside) characters. And contrary to her age, Ara can pass for a university student!

Although I haven't seen enough of her acting, I'm still waiting for Kim Jiwon to make it big and head a drama of her own, and I think she has enough potential as a lead for this drama..or at least a 2nd lead :3

Just my own thoughts, but I really don't think Suzy would be as good of a fit as Park Hae-Jin would be for this drama > < Hoping they don't do a miscasting for this aah

I wanna see her in the role based on the dissenting comments alone. The leeway I've seen some people take with their "interpretations" and "imaginings" of character/character motivation, makes me inclined to think she might actually be perfect for the role.
Casting her could also limit the "this isn't like the webtoon/manhwa" whine since they'll know from jump that it's not going to be exactly like the webtoon.

I also have nothing against her personally, but she can't act!!!! She can't play Seol, she just can't, she can't do it. Not only her acting ability, but yes, image-wise, I agree, she's not a good fit. Suzy is pretty universally beloved and popular, and while Seol is definitely not a friendless outcast, she's much more an... everywoman... and Suzy is definitely not an exerywoman. Nope. Nope. Nope. I cannot accept this.

Even though I love the webtoon, I'm not opposed to seeing the drama be different from it. As long as they cast actors who are talented and capable! Park Hae Jin is a little old too old to play a college student, I think, but he is a good actor, so I can move past that and wait for what the drama is going to show me. Suzy... not so much.

I'm surprised PD Lee Yoon-jung would offer the role to Suzy, she doesn't use a lot of idols in general and unless you count Yoon Eun-hee has never given an idol a leading role.

I said this before Heart to Heart but PD Lee Yoon-jung has worked with Lee Sun-Gyun a lot, 4 times in total, so I maintain my hope that this time she'll be able to convince him to make the leap to cable. I haven't read the webtoon so I don't know but surely there's a role he could play, a professor, an older brother, a loan shark, an older gentleman going back to college, surely there's got to be something he could play.

She can prove it and improve in a supporting role. In a supporting supporting one (not second lead) because she's had too many disastrous lead roles to be given the benefit of the doubt for anything more than that.

Also, Yoona would not have improved Naeil Cantabile.

it's just that the avid webtoon readers already have a certain image on what Sul looks like and it definitely doesnt fit Suzy's image. And she just doesnt give out the Sul's vibe, unlike PHJ that even though some people object his casting, he gives off the Sunbae character's vibe- innocent yet mysterious and calculating.

I really hope she decides to reject this offer though even if she doesnt, I think I would watch the drama anyway ( love CITT so much :")

Well actually I really don't have high expectations on manhwa remakes nowadays after Nodame. It just a bad actors/ess can break a drama and so do bad writing. yes I'm looking at you nodame writers. You make me hate SEK because you toned down the drama but keep Nodame as crazy as she is. So I do hope this writers can really find the gist and soul of the manhwa and bring out the story as it is. But still a big NO for suzy as Seol.

Maybe the Korean Nodame Cantabile didn't work because the writers didn't completely understand the Japanese sensibilities of storytelling. This time, they may be able to more effectively translate the manhwa into a t.v. drama because the writers can relate to the culture of the characters in C.I.T.

I've been a fan, and I mean a real fan, of quite a few things in my life and, even knowing how a fan feels about what they love, I think all this backlash is ridiculous.

I don't watch adaptions to see what's in the original. I watch adaptations to see a different version of the original. I would NEVER have had the Korean Liar Game be just like the Japanese one. It would have been a loss of the amazing story the Korean version was, and a waste of money, because, what's the point of adapting if it's just going to be a copy of the original?

Choosing the actors is part of the adaptation process. It makes no sense to want actors to fit the characters because:
a) being actors, it's their job to fit characters, so we shouldn't care about their image or the projects they've done in the past
b) the whole idea of the adaptation is to show ONE interpretation of the story and its protagonists, even if it means that the protagonists are not shown EXACTLY as YOU would have interpreted them.

I'm indifferent to both this story and Suzy so I know most of you are not going to take me seriously, but I really wanted to say let's open doors to creativity, people, not close them. That's the beauty of art, let it be.

However, I think that the point of an adaptation is to effectively transfer what people essentially loved from the original medium to another medium. Regarding the problem with casting of Suzy as Hong-sul, Hong-sul has particular characteristics that made her charming to the viewer, which, based on Suzy's track record and image, she most likely cannot embody.

Of course, it is not possible to make an adaptation that can fully satisfy the imagination of every fan. Still, it must be considered that an adaptation is a wish fulfillment as well. The characters that are pivotal to the story should be portrayed as close as possible to what the author of the manhwa intended to be interpreted.

Think of the "Harry Potter" and "Samurai X" movies, even if some parts and characters of the original stories were ommitted, the essence of the main stories and loved characters were able to transcend media - winning the hearts of fans - because of the right decisions in casting, directing, writing, etc.

Give me an actress that's not bubbly and pretty for this role please. Sul is someone whose actual charm is her personality and character, not her beauty. I love her, absolutely, because she's so real and deep and intricate and strong, but yet vulnerable and gets flustered easily.

Seriously, Japanese dramas are better adaptations because no one is afraid of looking ugly if it means looking genuine. UNDERSTAND! Sul is not pretty. She's an actual real college student with actual real problems and therefore needs to be portrayed by an expert.

I'm getting a sinking feeling now that they're considering her for the role. Anyone who has a good grasp on what Cheese in the Trap is about, knows that Hong Sul is the foundation of the entire story. If they are casting Suzy, then they obviously don't have a good grasp on what sort of character Hong Sul is. And I sorta get why, if you haven't read the webtoon, her character description would sound pretty typical for female leads on paper. I keep getting worried that they'd turn her into a Candy or that they'd turn Jung (the character that Park Hae-jin plays) into the protagonist. There's so much I love about Sul, that the idea of her being portrayed poorly, or for her story to be turned into someone's else's story, breaks my heart.

Like others said, Sul is a character who keeps most of her thoughts hidden. In fact, I would say a lot of her expressions and actions directly contradict what she is thinking. The actress who plays her must be extremely skilled to be able to show all the different sides of her.

People who are not fans of the webtoons may not understand why we feel so upset. I'm okay with the idea of dramas diverging from the original material. I'm not okay with the idea of it completely missing the point of the story. I'm not talking about minor plot points, I'm talking about the protagonist. And what the protagonist needs most of all is a great actress.

That's all I want for CitT. A great actress to play the role of Sul, who can act on equal ground with the actor who plays Jung without being overwhelmed.

I was really hoping Park Bo-Young would play the role. She looks like Sul plus her acting skills are pretty good. I love her in Oh My Ghost and Werewolf Boy. I think she could pull it off. The fierce part, the comedic beats, the more thoughtful moments - she's exactly what I envision when I picture Sul. It is so sad, because I also know it's unlikely she'll be casted. haha.

My other candidate were Moon Chae Won. She is so great in everything I have watched. Plus, she'd play the fierce part of Sul so well. She'd make her look so scary when furious, and that's what we need. Plus Sul has this habit of acting all super nice sparkly, but actually think pretty bad thoughts - and I think she'd pull it off so well.
