Drama viewership ratings for the week of Apr. 10-16, 2017

While Whisper may not have topped itself this week, it’s still way ahead of the competition. The only drama that comes close is Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People, though he better get on the stealing since he’s on the drama’s last stretch.

The Liar and His Lover has been doing marginally better, but not enough for it to be considered a ratings success. On the other hand, Saimdang, Light’s Diary isn’t doing as hot as the network wanted, so they’ll be cutting the pre-produced version by two episodes. And really, when has that ever gone wrong?

Over on the weekend, Strong Woman Do Bong-soon just missed the 10% mark, but just barely. The show has been such a critical and ratings success that I’m sure no one’s mourning the loss of that coveted 10%. Meanwhile, both Tunnel and new kid on the block Chicago Typewriter are both doing fairly well, though tvN just can’t seem to get a foothold in that weekend spot like it used to.

Agreed. I couldn't bring myself to follow SWDBS to the end despite loving PHS and PBY to bits. But i'd be refreshing KissAsian and DB constantly for So Rim and Han Gyul. How come no one in Korea realises what a gem TLAHL is?!

IMO, I think the reason why they're getting lower ratings is because of the timeslot given to them. Monday-Tuesday at 11 PM isn't exactly the ideal time because everyone is basically preoccupied with the beginning of the week and 11 pm is too late for students and workers. If they were given a weekend timeslot or maybe sometime near 6-10 pm (near news time slot) they'd have better ratings...

Required fields are marked *

But all previous drama from last year were on the same timeslot too? Not only for this drama. So I dont think it is merely because of timeslot. If people find it worth it and enjoyable to watch, 11pm is not a big deal -like CITT, Another OHY, Let's Fight Ghost, Drinking Solo which their rating were decent and impressive for the same time slot last year.

2

The problem is that some of the dramas are okay, good, decent even, but nothing is a blockbuster, a must see/must watch.

Go on viki, dramafever, and other streaming sites, and the most popular shows with lots of comments are dramas coming out of China. Eternal Love, is arguably the most popular drama in the international community this year, even better received than Goblin.

If this kind of emotion is also what is going on in SK, then it explains the dearth in ratings.

Even with the push and pull going on between Asian countries, people are still finding ways to watch dramas from each country.

SK needs to be careful, because they are losing their grip on the hallyu wave. There is only so much underdeveloped plots viewers can take.

A huge revamp of the SK entertainment industry is needed - and not just a perfunctory attempt, like calling a drama pre-produced, when all that means is that the chaos of writing scripts as the show is being filmed still occurs, except it happens months before it airs - which really isn't what pre-production is all about.

okay this comment is getting to long and all over the place, stopping now, LOL

1

This is actually response to @svgp.
You say that I should go check out sites like Viki, dramafever where most comments are actually on China -- but they aren't and it's not true. Most dominated comments are actually on Korean drama but I don't understand why you would even compare such in the first place since these already have heavily dominated Korean drama viewers. Also quantity does not equal quality.
Push and pules aren't happening with other Asian countries. It's just China. I'm sure that South Korean are already moving to market and focus on other Asian countries that they haven't marketed before. Regardless of that, none of that has anything to do with ratings in their own country.

I do agree that SK needs to go away with the film as they air dramas. If they were pre-produced -- there would be less accidents, stress-free filming and overall better schedules, better scripts, production etc.

2

Mine too and for all the right reasons too...Fleshed out characters, music, ambition, romance...I think story is ripe with conflicts and I hope each conflict, each thread is solved properly...fingers crossed..

I literally just got on the TLAHL train and I AGREE. So much. I think it deserves to be in the 3-4% range, at least, but I'd settle for at least 2. There's just so many engaging conflicts in this lovely little drama. It's too bad more people aren't giving it a chance. Can't believe I was almost one of them!

It's like Weightlifting Fairy all over again. At least Fairy catapulted Sung Kyung and Joo Hyuk internationally and had a huge cult following afterwards. I really hope the same happens to Liar, at least some international love. The only consolation is that at least it gets subbed so fast.

Yas! Father is Strange! I never thought I'd impatiently wait for a weekend drama. I hope they will hit 30% soon. Lee joon seem will be stay with his "father" soon, although I wonder how her love line with Jung So Min will be created. I think from there the story will be more interesting. Father and Mother pair is so lovely, Lee Yoo Ri is awesome and I'm rooting for Lee Joon character, he looks so lonely.

There's some snarky banter between the characters and also a few funny moments as the hero adjusts to the modern world and freaks out about modern technology. I actually like the humour bc they don't overdo it. I don't think it's that dark but it's definitely getting more and more intense!

I dropped SWDBS because I was expecting to find humor but I couldn't. Surprisingly I found it in Tunnel which I didn't expect to be funny at all. I like that the show doesn't try too hard to be violent, dark or complex. Yet, it delivers on the mystery and intensity.

The Liar and His Lover is my crack drama of the week, totally invested in each and every characters story. Chicago Writer is great too, though it seems like a hodge podge of thriller-romance-mystery now, let's have faith things will get sorted out.
I have to say SWDBS is a disappointment despite a strong start, I lost interested in most characters, only PHS-PBY are absolutely squee-worthy.

Although teens may be its target audience, hence the lower ratings, it's reminiscent for adults -- high school, first love, fangirling over idols. The Liar and His Lover is a youth drama done right.

That's what I thought too, but , if you give it a few eps, it may just surprise you like it did me.

I admit, I actually need to go back and watch the first 2 episodes and give them more attention than I did at first. And, now, I feel like I may have missed important parts of the story and want to start from the beginning again, lol.

"Sister Is Alive is about three women who each deal with some type of emotional trauma. They come together and bond over their similar suffering and form deep friendships. Becoming so close they decide to adopt a baby together as a form of healing for each girl."

They adopt a baby! And Lee Ji Hoon has a lead role. Yay.

Required fields are marked *

A bit villain but may not be the most villain, what is that, something like nearly headless Nick. I don't know, definite Makjang. I mean its only episode 2 and Dasom has started to go down the dark path from which I guess is no turning back or somewhat turning back. I hated that spa brat that made her go down that spiral though, she deserved to be hit like that. I like the lead gal and lee Ji Hoon looks like he is aging backwards, his skin looked even more flawless than Dasom.

The burning documents discussion is getting annoying. I think we shouldn't rule out the possibility that Young Joo trusts Dong Joo's words enough to discard the documents. All she wants is to save her father be it by the law or any other way, She hasn't shown any other motives in getting in the way of that lawless family.

Me too. I actually dropped it after I finished ep.5. Everything made me frustrated and I could not find any logic so I couldn't understand what was going on. Thinking about watching Mystery Queen. Too light plot is not really my cup of tea but perhaps Mystery Queen turns out to be something good. Did not really like Choi Kang Hee since I always have a feeling that she's old.. but watching her in the devastated 7th Grade Civil Servant (with my beloved Joo Won) made me see her in another light.

Yes, I still want the ratings to be better but it doesn't say anything about the quality of the drama. I am kind of nervous about the upcoming episodes though. I don't want it to go heavy on chaebol politics or melodramatic(is Ki Taek dying? Nooooooooo!!!). I want it to continue to be the slice of life drama and politics reduced to Eun Jang Do triumphing over Dr Shady.

At first, I wasn't sure about the writer as well. I don't like the first episode, but as the story progressed, it's getting better, and finally I really really loved episode 4. I hope the writer can keep her writing up *fingers and toes crossed*

Ayeeee all my dramas (Whisper, Mystery Queen, Father is Strange, Tunnel) are top of their time slots!!! I hope the ratings for Tunnel go up today, episode 7 was sooo intense. What's going on with tvn this year?! Hopefully they'll have more look with their upcoming thrillers/cop shows

Wished SWDBS could've hit that 10%, but I'm not too bummed about it considering how well it did during its run. Definitely gonna miss Min Min, Bong Bong, and Gookdoo~!!! ? I don't watch too many dramas again since I always wanna watch something new at least once first. But I think I'll come back to this one later when it's time for a rewatch. ?

SWDBS has been a critical success? Interesting. (No shade, I really think that's interesting!).

I searched up the definition since I think I've been mistaking critical success for something else. Turns out the drama contribute to the success of the corporation or in this case, jtbc, so it's considered a critical success. The one which I thought of at first was critical acclaim, which I doubt this drama will get (I'm not really throwing shade, since critical acclaim are usually awarded to those complex or indie movies that Korea is known for...). However, this drama is in the running for actor/actress categories in one award show (I forgot which one).

Chicago Typewriter is my current obsession! I hope many people will start appreciating it and the ratings will rise soon.

Tunnel is the airing show I look forward most every week like how I was with Chief Kim! Liking Father is Strange too, and am still watching FITCOY for the casts (Who can resist the puppies?!) despite the mess. (Am still amazed at myself for watching every episode)

Definitely still hoping for Chicago Typewriter to rise by lil bit. But then, quality over quantity :)

I've got three lovely dramas on my plate - Radiant Office, Rebel and Tunnel. Just restarted on Mystery Queen but I'm not sure if I'll continue.

I am thinking of either Chicago Typewriter or Whisper. Anyone watching both? Is Chicago more mystery or fantasy? Also, is Whisper a mentally draining sort of drama? I don't think I am in a mood for such unless it is also very addictive.

I love CT it's mysterious, the plot feels like a breath of fresh air.
I am watching Whisper too PBY is a badass but it's frustrating too much planning and stabbing in the back. It's the kind of drama that will keep you running in circles to the end.

I am more intrigued by the ghostwriter. I can't wait to find out the mystery surrounding him. Is he a ghost, a real being, a real being possessed by a ghost? How is he writing stories that correspond to SJ's dreams?

Your questions and why is our ghost(writer) so cute? I thought he would be mysterious and cold till the end but he ended up being awkward and dorky dude with old fashioned clothes.

I'm pleased with Mystery Queen's ratings! EP 4 was better than EP 3 too. I hope it stays in the double digits.

Now that WS is warming up to SO's sleuthing abilities, their chemistry is more evident. It helps that the cases are quite interesting too, helped mostly by SO's methodical reasoning.

I agree.
I love watching SO explaining the clues and I'm happy to see WS gradually acknowledging SO's skills. ^^

Both shows are so different. Personally, I prefer Mystery Queen because I think it's fun.

Radiant Office - it is slice of life drama.
Mystery Queen - as the title speaks, it is a mystery drama which have some comedic aspect.

Depends of what you are looking for. If you want a good laugh, MQ is for you. If you are looking something which is more on inspiring stories RO probably for you.

RO - more realistic and is something that some viewers can relate to (looking for jobs, etc.)
MQ - mystery drama with quirky characters (mostly the female lead)
The main lead in RO is pricky. The MQ male lead is untrusting and well, loud and violent (they really characterize him as a "brawn before brain" type of character).

I think both dramas aim to insert humor with RO including the trio and MQ is basically partner in solving crimes. All in all, both dramas have their own perks and both include teamwork and so forth. I recommend trying 2 eps for each to see which one works for you the most :)

I know it's already ended. The drama, Tomorrow with You. It was so underrated in my opinion. I hope the lead actor and actress win best couple in the next award. Best couple ever and great drama. It's definitely a repeat for me.

Hi, sorry if this shouldn't belong here but has anyone got any drama or movie recommendations where either one of the two second leads of the upcoming Ruler of the Mask plays in (L and Yoon So Hee)? I have just watched one drama project featuring Yoon So Hee and can't say I'm a fan of her acting; L doesn't seem to have very positive reviews last time I read about him. I really want to warm up to the two second leads before the drama starts. Many thanks in advance.

I can't understand why the liar and his lover so underrated its such a good drama and if you are an old kDa ma lover you can't help but fall in love because it has a classic nostalgia with a hint of freshness.

This is random, but I once used the viewership ratings articles (and my other DB articles) for a term paper on Kdrama filming/production and the effect it has on those involved in the process lol.

I am really surprised Tunnel doesn't have better ratings.. I like it. I like Whisper so far. I am going to miss Strong Woman Do Bong-soon. Park Bo Young and Park Hyung Sik were the sweetest couple I have ever seen. Hyung Sik was gorgeous and so romantic.

Watched ep 1 & 2, observed bad sound and editing, if youre into typical quirky and romantic story i think its for you. I decided to continue watching it due to strong chemistry between the leads.
