Book & OST giveaway: I Believe in a Thing Called Love

We’ve got a fun new giveaway for you from the author of upcoming YA novel I Believe in a Thing Called Love, which is about a drama-lover who employs romance tricks and tropes from her favorite K-dramas in an effort to jumpstart her love life (I’m sure we’ve all seen enough dramas to imagine how well that goes over). For a chance to win a signed copy of the book and a drama OST, enter below!

Here’s a message from author Maurene Goo:

Hi, everyone! You might remember that a few months ago javabeans and girlfriday were kind enough to interview me about my upcoming YA novel, I Believe in a Thing Called Love. Since the book is about a girl trying to snag a guy using the “steps” she finds in K-dramas, well, sharing this book with Dramabeans readers was a no-brainer. Not only that, javabeans and girlfriday were kind enough to consult and brainstorm with me so that I could make sure the K-drama facts were right and they helped me create the K-drama starter guide in the back of the book, as well.

And in the years that I took to write this book, I’ve learned about the incredible fandom through this website, and have become a newbie fan myself (I’ve watched K-dramas since forever but am a total lightweight when it comes to K-drama knowledge, and I’m in awe of all of you!). Basically, I’m incredibly grateful that Dramabeans exists.

So, in celebration of my book coming out this month on May 30, I’m offering a giveaway to Dramabeans readers! There will be two winners selected—both will win signed copies of my book, plus either the Healer or Goblin original soundtracks (two of my favorites!).

To enter, just answer this prompt in your comment below: Tell us about your favorite drama love triangle!

And if you want a copy of my book for yourself, giveaway be damned, you can pre-order through Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

Contest Rules:

  • Leave a comment below telling us about your favorite drama love triangle.
  • Post as many comment entries as you want, through Sunday, May 14, at 12:00 noon, Pacific Time. (Here’s a handy-dandy time zone converter, so you can figure out what that is in your local time.)
  • We will email winners directly.

Heyyy glad I'm not late to the party!

Mentioning a favourite love triangle is surprisingly hard, but I'll choose the epic triangle in Reply 1988. Who can deny the outrage and confusion over the ending, when we've been fed the point of view of Jung Hwan, his awkward first love, and all his attempts to catch her attention romantically. We played right into their game and were rooting for him (dang it he was just a minute or two late, he could've been the one to ask her for a date!). Duk Seon was ready to reciprocate his love too, lol. But anyway, that's life, I did love Choi Taek, and she love him too, and as long as Duk Seon is happy I guess?

One great drama love triangle was in Page Turner, when it was between Kim So Hyun, Ji Soo, and Shin Jae Ha. Despite being a short 3 episode show, the attachments between So Hyun and Ji Soo was so cute, as he helped her to truly love playing the piano even though she was blind and he couldn't continue to do what he really wanted to do. The original rivalry between Jae Ha and So Hyun was well played too, even when he began to lose his hatred for her. Their duet at the end was heart wrenching as Ji Soo was not the one to play with her, but held his own little solo at where it all started. This show took us in for an emotional roller coaster and goes to show how every page they turn, whether its a music sheet or from the story of reality, is another page of their life.

Reply 1988-Taek, Dukseon, and Junghwan. Back when I didn't know who would be the husband, I felt second-lead syndrome for both male leads (both were nice guys). This drama made me feel like both the guys had an equal chance with Dukseon, rather than one guy being friendzoned.

Oh my ghostess- Bongsun, Chef, and Soon-ae. This was one of the few times I had second lead syndrome for a female lead. Bongsun was adorable in her sweet bumbling way, but quirky Soon-ae stole my heart. My heart hurt for the ghostess who had an unfair death and couldn't have Chef either.

This one's a bit old, but My Girl-Yoo Rin, Gong Chan, and Jung Woo. Jung Woo's longing gaze and overall warm personality won me over. Admittedly, the main couple's bickering was adorable, but I can't ignore how good Lee jun ki was.

Flower Boy Next Door.

the methods jinrak, the secret admirer, used were wayyyyyyyy too passive to woo the girl. unlike kegeum, he attempted to tear down those thick castle walls right away. kegeum may be overly hyper at times, but i don't know how jinrak can be so patient (like three whole years or something?! & i don't even know what he's waiting for), it may take a thousand years for him to get to dokmi's heart. but the cutey flipbook post-its & to like tiptoe around her to ensure she's not uncomfortable by his presence, are really tenderly thoughtful of him.

another oldie but goodie is "Boys over flower". I believe i watched the taiwan version first --"meteor garden". Then saw "hana yori dango". This version (JAP) is the only drama that i had to wait impatiently for it to be subbed so i can download it. i haven't downloaded anything else since!! Lastly, "Boys over flower" which i like b/c it goes into more details with yi-jung and ga-eul (i enjoyed this couple more than the main lead in the korean version and only re-watch their parts).

How can you not love someone who is misunderstood and troubled. He was spoiled but was knocked into place. Was able to grow and not become selfish.

first of all, this book sounds super cute and right up my alley- I'm sure i will love it!

K-drama love triangle... I'm a sucker for those. I love petty jealously haha so anything where the main lead is jealous is the best. But I think I have to go with Healer being my favorite. When Jung Hoo as his alter-ego Bong Soo is jealous of the attention that Jung Hoo as Healer is getting from Young Shin... perfect.

can one of my longstanding favorites not be a korean drama? my favorite version of boys over flowers will always be hana yori dango with matsujun, mao inoue, and oguri shun. this is where my love affair with oguri shun began. heck, i can't even watch subsequent seasons and movies for the drama because it still hurts. domyoji was ridiculous and very much a bumbling fool but we found out he had a heart in there somewhere. he eventually warmed up to me but it was rui that was love at first sight. he was the quiet type and he wore his heart on his sleeve for the woman he loved. it just killed me that he realized too late just how great makino was. i don't think it would have hurt as much if i had not known how he eventually felt about makino...

I personally hate love triangle, but if I had to mention one it would be Answer Me 1997: Shiwon - Yoonje - Joonhee. Both Joonhee's feeling to Yoonje and Yoonje's feeling to Shiwon were so genuine it broke my heart everytime they realized that the one they love was in love with another person (remember the scene when Yoonje saw Shiwon crying and Joonhee put the scarf on her, he thought Shiwon and Joonhee were dating. Or the scene when Joonhee followed Yoonje to apply to an academy only to fail himself when he knew that Yoonje was failed, eventhough he knew that Yoonje only love Shiwon).
But the plot twist was gold!
Years later, when Joonhee realized that he didn't love Yoonje anymore after they lived together and knowing his real personality. Lol.
That kind of love triangle really crack me up.

Talking about love triangle always hurt. I always on the OTP camp or fall deep into SLS never ever I like both main actor or second lead. Except, Answer Me 1988. I started with mind that Taek (I just adores PBG from the start) will get the girl but damn JungHwan, making me fall in love with him instead. There are times when I question that JungPal must be the husband. This is the only drama that I root for each boys to go and get the girl, hated each boys for the hesitation, and by episode 16 had given up to guess who is the husband. Meaning I'm happy and sad with either one. Never did I know I'll be so heartbroken seeing JungPal given up his first love and yet, I really wanted Taek to be the husband (talking about inconsistent ??). Anyhow, any kdrama fans know the heartache being in love triangle, yes we also felt it together with the leads. Not sure whether it is a gift or punishment to be so invested in a drama.

Continued.
Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, I just really loved Pillar, okay? And really enjoyed his abs. Was really gratified by Lee Ki-woo and Lee Chung-ah getting together in real life.
W, for Kang Chul and Chul 2.0, who I can get behind with Yeon-joo way better, though the episodes with original Chul were way more riveting.
Moonlight, because I just adored the second lead even though I knew Ra-on and the Prince would be together. I still miss their bromance with Kwak Do-yeon as well.

Kim Jae-joon (trash), Sung Na-jung, Kim Seon-joon (chilbong) from REPLY 1994

This love triangle basically played and toyed with my heart. I will never forget how scarred I was upon knowing who the husband was. After finishing the drama, all I could say was 'WHY ISN'T IT CHILBONG? HOW WAS HE NOT THE HUSBAND? WHAT SORCERY IS THIS?' 3yrs have passed and my shredded heart hasn't fully recovered yet.

Bottom of the 9th With 2 Outs ???. Another oldie but a goodie, exactly a decade ago now! I love love love love loved Nan-hee and Hyung-tae's relationship, what with a best friends turned to lovers romance, so much so that I actually envy and want it for myself in real life, even though I know it probably won't happen. But Lee Tae-sung's Jung-joo character also had an appealing puppy-like earnestness that, even though I knew he was wrong for Nan-hee, that they just weren't meant for each other, I couldn't help but root for him a little.

Marriage Not Dating. Jinwoon's character was so freaking cute in that he adored both the leads, and never once begrudged Gi-tae for getting the girl and in fact still supported and respected him afterwards and I honestly don't mind if the three of them got together. Much love to go around! ????

I don't know if this is counted as love triangle, but there were quite multi angles relationship in High Kick 3. All of them were so sweet in their own ways.
Lee Jong Suk - Kim Ji Won - Yoon Kye Sang.
Yoon Kye Sang - Baek Jin Hee - Seo Ji Suk.
Seo Ji Suk - Park Ha Sun - Yoon Kye Sang.
They all had their moments. When I see Lee Jong Suk and Kim Ji Won, I wished the end up together. But then came moment of Kim Ji Won with Yoon Kye Sang and they were so sweet and heart warming and I wanted her to be with him instead. Same went with other people I mentioned above.
Theirs were not necessarily love relationship, though.

My favourite love triangle is from the very first kdrama I watched, the Heirs, between Kim Tan, Cha Eun Sang, and Choi Young Do. In the beginning of the show I really loved kim tan and cha eun sang with all their bickering and sarcasm, however, as the show progressed and more light was shed on choi young do, I really started to understand him a lot more better, and found myself secretly rooting for him. And although we all knew, along with Young do, that he and Eun sang could never be together, he still stood by her when kim tan couldn't. And in many ways helped bring eun sang and kim tan closer.

the real exception in dramaland where the second lead gets the girl. HURRAY!!!~ ?

although jaeha & joonyoung were childhood lovers, they were separated & joonyoung lost her childhood memories. moreover, they did not recognize each other when they met again as grownups. doyoon was rude & aloof at first but once he fell for joonyoung, he went all out. like the almost deadly mushroom allergy & risking to cut his hands despite being a famous chef. also the lovely playdough dolls! he helped her in secret & was there for her at her lowest point when her nerves were injured. i set my eyes on lee sang woo after this drama & i never regretted despite the makjang! ?

Kill Me, Heal Me - Cha Do Hyun, Oh Ri Jin, Shin Se Gi

It felt heartbreaking to see Shin Se Gi suffer and knowing that he will never end up with Ri Jin. I really like this love triangle because Ri Jin sees multiple sides of her love interest and commits to being in relationship with him despite his disorder. I think I was - as usual - rooting for the bad boy initially, but I was satisfied with her ending up with the nice guy who chose to protect her in a different way.

That would be Coffee Prince (Han Gyul - Eun Chan - Han Sung) for me. Honestly the relationship was complicated, but it was nice to watch to see how they all grew in regards to the friendship. I mean none of them were perfect, but it was still funny to see how they interacted with each other, as well as, the hardship they each went through because of the situation. Trying not to give the show away.

If I am to ask about my favorite love triangle, I think it would be from Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. Their love triangle is a bizarre one. Min-min is so adorable being a butt-fetish and how he teases Bong Soon being a gay. I really love their overall set-up. It' s not like the usual love triangle you can find in a kdrama, this one is unique and funny.

Jealously Incarnate and Healer's love triangles will always have a special place in my heart because they were just so funny-seriously the humor was off the charts to me. But my favorite love triangle has to be from My Name is Kim Sam Soon, with Sam Soon, Jin Heon, and Hee Jin.

Back when I watched this, I thought it was unconventional for two girls to be fighting over one guy, instead of the usual vice versa. Both girls fought for their man- forget noble idiocy. There was a lottt of yelling but I loved that they stood their ground. What was unique to me was that I understood both of the female leads' POV and I sided with them when it was their moment in the drama.

I have a weakness for long-going romances that started from childhood so initially I was rooting for Hee Jin. Like Hee Jin, I also saw Sam Soon as the one interrupting the perfect bond the two had. Also, totally shallow, but I taught visually, Hee Jin and Jin Heon looked perfect (which I understand was the point lol).

But as I kept watching, I saw how Sam Soon made Jin Heon a better person and how he came to respect and love her for who she is. Sam soon was just all levels of awesome and she didn't let Jin Heon influence her values. The breakup between Hee Jin and Jin Heon was emotional because after all, those 2 were together for so long. But at that point, I was all for Sam Soon because Hee Jin was becoming delusional. She made the wrong choice to leave without telling anyone and it was just false hope to mend what was broken and over the moment she left.

I really love how each character was the main character of their life ( quoting yhe amazing Choong Nam from Dear My Friends :D). They all went on a journey of growth and grew as people in the end.

Oh my gosh this turned into an essay but thank you Dramabeans for always keeping it fun and spoiling us with these awesome goodies! I lurk religiously and everyday life would not be complete without this blog!

More of my favorite love triangles. For the "hottest" of love triangles has to be from I Need Romance 2 (2012). Joo Yeol Mae and Yoon Seok Hyun had the steamiest chemistry of all all the Kdramas I have watched. But it still made me want her to choose Shin Ji Hoon, I felt that even with all the chemistry she still had a deep connection to Ji Hoon.
Now for a love triangle that I did not care about but yet was an integral part of the story was in Twenty Again. Ha Nora was destined to be with Cha Hyen Seok, but they had to stick to the triangle so she had her husband Kim Woo Cheol come ruin the picture. Hehehe

I loved the love triangle in the Princess Hours. It's basically the classic love triangle. Sometimes I can't help but root for the other guy, instead of the leading guy (second lead syndrome).
Chae-kyung with Yul or Chae-kyung with the crown prince?
Hmmm...

At the same time, I also ship the lead male character and the female lead character. It's kind of weird. In short, I would be satisfied with whoever the leading female character chooses.

Favorite love triangle?

Signal.

Lee Jae Han -- Cha Soo Hyun -- Justice

Justice, in a way that completely does not live up to its reputation, plays dirty and comes between the gruff romantic Jae Han and pink princess Soo Hyun.

I could watch that confession scene of hers for days: the one where she wails in the ambulance while Jae Han and the paramedic look away from the blubbering mess, oh good lord, the paramedic's reaction just kills me every single time.

Spoiler: Jae Han's love for Justice reigns eternal; so damn you, Justice, for depriving me of a Jae Han in love and awkward, because watching that feels like owning three fluffy bunnies and a tub of strawberry ice cream.

My favorite love triangle is the one between Song joo,Tae hwa and Jung suh in the drama "Stairway to heaven".
Song joo himself reasons my choice at the end of the drama stating "Perhaps, that person might have loved that girl more than me but even though i say this, that doesn't mean that i loved her any less".
This became my favorite love triangle since i didn't get SLS from watching this drama.I was happy when Jung suh was with Song joo and also happy when she was with Song joo. It didn't matter to me who the girl ended up with because she received love from both of the boys immensely(but she loved Song joo so she ended up with him). This was a melodrama and a tearjerker(did u really have to kill both Tae hwa and Jung suh?) but yet i enjoyed it as a tale of unimaginable love and sacrifice because of the strong love triangle.
