Book & OST giveaway: I Believe in a Thing Called Love

We’ve got a fun new giveaway for you from the author of upcoming YA novel I Believe in a Thing Called Love, which is about a drama-lover who employs romance tricks and tropes from her favorite K-dramas in an effort to jumpstart her love life (I’m sure we’ve all seen enough dramas to imagine how well that goes over). For a chance to win a signed copy of the book and a drama OST, enter below!

Here’s a message from author Maurene Goo:

Hi, everyone! You might remember that a few months ago javabeans and girlfriday were kind enough to interview me about my upcoming YA novel, I Believe in a Thing Called Love. Since the book is about a girl trying to snag a guy using the “steps” she finds in K-dramas, well, sharing this book with Dramabeans readers was a no-brainer. Not only that, javabeans and girlfriday were kind enough to consult and brainstorm with me so that I could make sure the K-drama facts were right and they helped me create the K-drama starter guide in the back of the book, as well.

And in the years that I took to write this book, I’ve learned about the incredible fandom through this website, and have become a newbie fan myself (I’ve watched K-dramas since forever but am a total lightweight when it comes to K-drama knowledge, and I’m in awe of all of you!). Basically, I’m incredibly grateful that Dramabeans exists.

So, in celebration of my book coming out this month on May 30, I’m offering a giveaway to Dramabeans readers! There will be two winners selected—both will win signed copies of my book, plus either the Healer or Goblin original soundtracks (two of my favorites!).

To enter, just answer this prompt in your comment below: Tell us about your favorite drama love triangle!

And if you want a copy of my book for yourself, giveaway be damned, you can pre-order through Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

Contest Rules:

  • Leave a comment below telling us about your favorite drama love triangle.
  • Post as many comment entries as you want, through Sunday, May 14, at 12:00 noon, Pacific Time. (Here’s a handy-dandy time zone converter, so you can figure out what that is in your local time.)
  • We will email winners directly.

She was pretty!

I was so conflicted on whether I wanted Hye Jin to end up with Sung Joon or Shin Hyuk! Even thought Sung Joon was a major jerk in the beginning, he still develops feeling for Hye Jin despite her outward appearance (yay!) because her personality was what matters the most. But then we have this cute cinnamon roll named Shin Hyuk who complicates thing because he is so supportive of Hye Jin and is just a lovable goofy character. Honestly I had the biggest second lead syndrome here :/

Another favorite "triangle" was in Legend of the Blue Sea when Joon Jae thought Shim Cheong was in love with some other guy and kept on badmouthing him...but the "other guy" was actually him from before his memories were erased.

What Happened in Bali.

a classic that i will never forget. the combination of awesome acting with an ending that i never quite understand why, scarred me for life.

soojung literally just kept going back and forth between jaemin & inwook that i seriously have no idea who did she love. even after she made her choice (or did she?), she confessed using her last breath that she loved the other one, like whatttttttt?! ? i don't even know if having all the three leads dead in the end make me feel better or worse. ?

Punch
Park Jung-hwan and Shin Ha-kyung. Even though they broke up, they are able to cross paths once again and work together, to fix the consequences of their choices that they made in the past. Now they can work together one last time to make the world that their daughter will live in a better place for her.
My favorite scene is were she brings him the marriage certificate, to show him that they are a family.

My Beautiful Bride
Kim Do-Hyeong and Yoon Joo Young.
What will Kim Do-Hyeong do in order to find the woman he loves? Kim Moo-Yul to me gives one of the best performances I have seen. He plays a man trying to find his missing bride.
Ko Sung-Hee also gives a good performance as Yoon Joo Young the missing bride. And scenes together are beautiful, sweet. I could feel the love that they feel for one another.

my fav love triangle would have to be between KMHM's Cha Do hyun, Shin Segi and rijin ♡ contrary to expectations it wasnt with the second lead park seo joon because I honestly felt that they were cuter as siblings but kudos to jisung for being able to play 2 roles which I could see rijin being happy with and it got especially tragic when segi's existence was threatening dohyun's :( i really wished there was some way both of them could live on but yes this emotional conflict had me changing sides every week and was a huge part of why I loved this show so much :))

My favorite love triangle will probably always be my very first one all the way back in 2012, because it almost ended in me never watching K-dramas again: Flower Boy Ramyun Shop. Counter-intuitive you say? Read on. Cha Chi Soo, Eun Bi, and the Wonderful Pillar Husband. I knew nothing of K-dramas, was highly skeptical of why my best friend was hooked on them, but for her sake I decided to give them a chance. She gave me 3 drama choices, the other two being Boys over Flowers and Secret Garden, and I can honestly say I wouldn't be writing this post now if I'd chosen one of those two. But wait you say, I thought FBRS almost chased you away too? Well it did. You see, I had no idea at all about the concept of a "second lead." I went into FBRS like it was an Answer Me show (which didn't exist yet) thinking that she could end up with either guy and clearly she belonged with Husband. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the show all the way up until episode 15 when it suddenly became quite clear (though the experienced viewer saw it coming far far sooner...say episode 1?) that in spite of Pillar being the logical and oh so swoony choice, it just wasn't going to happen. Though butterflies had occurred watching Cha Chi Soo's scenes and resulted in wonderful bouts of push and pull with my emotions, I was never the less devastated. I walked away from K-dramas in that moment, presumably forever.
But here's where tragedy turns to triumph. As much as that love triangle hurt...it engaged me. I lived and breathed and belly laughed with that show and it's characters. The betrayal I felt at the loss of my ship couldn't compare to the unmistakable quality and crack like pull that are K-dramas. When you care about the characters and story it makes it worth facing a little heart ache. So a few months later I found myself giving another drama a try. Then another, and another, and the rest they say, is addiction *cough* history, I mean history! And when your first drama is also your first 2nd lead/wrong ship heartbreak, no Answer Me can hurt you. (This is a total lie, I lived our died by whether Oppa and Taek would be the husbands.)
Just as a side note: I must say I felt quite vindicated in my conviction that Eun-bi and Pillar belonged together when I found out the actors were dating in real life :)

MASTER'S SUN Joo Joong Won, Tae Gongshil, Kang Woo!

I felt like this love triangle was all over the place, but it seemed so natural and effortless. Gongshil started falling for Kang Woo since they were neighbors and worked at the same place: he was kind, good-looking, and understanding. But with her need for Joong Won's physical presence to soothe her ghost seeing abilities, it was only a matter of time before Gongshil naturally fell in love with Joong Won. Kang Woo knew all of this, he knew he was a second lead! The way he looked at them in anguish knowing he let her go because his boss told him to, and later wanted to win her back while knowing she's safer in Joong Won's care seriously touched a few heartstrings. He lost the girl, and he knew he would. He still hoped there was a chance, as a lot of us still do. Gongshil and Joong Won were a great couple, and Kang Woo let them have that. Dying.

As a huge fan of the Hong Sisters, I'd have to say that Best Love takes the cake for favourite love triangle: Dokko Jin, Gu Ae Jung, Yoon Pil Joo. All three characters were so darn likeable and quirky in their own way. I also liked that for a minute, at least in the beginning, Pil Joo stood an actual chance with our heroine. For a second, he was a true contender for her feelings and not just a friend.

Hmmm this is a hard one considering the fact that I've been suffering from second lead syndrome for so long....
The first one that pops in my mind has to be She Was Pretty. From the beginning Simon caught me with his hilarious antics and his sweet puppy eyes. This was a character that I didn't feel horrible about at the end but rather loved how he grew as a person and took his lost love as a obstacle he had to overcome. The parting with this character was absolutely beautiful and healed the hole in my heart.

How do you pick just one??

Okay, it has to be the love triangle in Answer Me 1997. Not the one between Shi Won, Yoon Jae, and Tae Woong. We all knew Yoon Jae was the end game.

No, the one that tugged on my heart strings was Shi Won/Yoon Jae/Joon Hee. Because Hoya's puppy eyes and little freakouts when Yoon Jae would hug on him ripped my heart apart. He knew his best friend couldn't return his love in the same way. Joon Hee supported the relationship between his two friends even though it hurt. And the way Yoon Jae didn't judge Joon Hee after overhearing the stairway conversation was beautiful.

I'm actually getting teary-eyed now as I type this.

The love triangle which I really broke my heart is Reply 1988's Deok Sun, Taek, and Jung Hwan. I still can't watch the whole show in a sequence. I believe that I didn't finish the whole series because I can watch Episode 18 but I can't watch 19 & 20 after that. Jung Hwan broke my heart into pieces. I got me ugly crying the first time I watched Episode 18. :(

This is an impossible question. I don't even like love triangles but ahhh second lead syndrome is real. The reply series and recentl jealousy incarnate definitely made me struggle a lot in my ships, but I think my ultimate one due to its impact while I was in high school was You're Beautiful. ALL THE ANGST. The silent looks and noble gestures to protect the MC. If I wanted to take any romance tips from kdrama in HS, that would've been it haha.

Is web drama OK? My favourite is Love for a Thousand More. I don't even know that it is a love triangle in the first place, because Jason was such a supportive only friend for Mi Jo and he didn't show even an ounce of jealousy towards Joon Woo. He didn't try to woo her, or became the authoritative jerk who thought that the girl is his and his alone. Only then at the very end of the drama it is shown that he was willing to wait for another thousand year for her to realize that he was in love with Mi Joo all along, what with both of them being immortals. I realize the title is all for his undying love to Mi Joo. I'm such a sucker for this eternal love, and it doesn't hurt that the actor playing Jason (Jang Ki Young) is as hot as sunny Bali in May!

Yes! Oh my goodness.

This is the first Kdrama which I fully understood while watching (because when I was young and watched Kdramas I really didn't understand what was happening). It is Dream High. The love triangle of Hye Mi, Shi Hyuk (Jin Guk), and Sam Dong was worth the watch!

At first watch, I really was Team Shi Hyuk. Most of my friends were Team Sam Dong (I really didn't get it until Moon Embracing The Sun happened. I mean what a gorgeous Kim Soo Hyun we have there, right? Then, Do Min Joon from My Love From Another Star killed me.)

Spoiler Alert!

I think I was Team Shi Hyuk then because they had a connection in the past! The childhood scenes were really something that connected them. It's not like they bumped each other on the street kind of thing. Hye Mi cried for Shi Hyuk and he really appreciated it; hence, he was not able to forget this child. But then I think he lost the chance when he debuted. I mean the teenage Hye Mi needed him to be there throughout the journey of a hopeful, successful debut but Hye Mi might have felt that Shi Hyuk left her hanging because she thought Shi Hyuk would always be there for her all throughout.

Here was Sam Dong, waiting for a chance to show Hye Mi that he would always be there no matter what. He likes Hye Mi too but can't do anything to protect her because Hye Mi is the one really protecting him especially after the tinnitus issue. Then, Sam Dong slowly grew up on his own feet. He did not need Hye Mi's help anymore. That was when I think Hye Mi unconsciously considered Sam Dong as a guy. The hidden picture of Sam Dong in Hye Mi's wallet proved it. Oh my goodness!

I think Hye Mi's choice was something I did not expect way back then. Now, I can see why. The proximity of Hye Mi and Sam Dong really mattered. Sam Dong's appearance mattered too. The improvement of his hair style really made him attractive. Exposure to attractiveness is a way to a girl's heart. They also have similarities, both are into music. I think Sam Dong also toned down his love confession for Hye Mi, not like the first few episodes. This gave Hye Mi a chance to be comfortable with Sam Dong. Sharing experiences too can be counted as a start of being comfortable with each other.

I think this is why I was Team Shi Hyuk-Hye Mi but the Sam Dong-Hye Mi pairing makes sense. :)

I usually hate love triangles on principle, and do my best to avoid them - as much as I can - in dramas. Mostly because I find myself with an incurable case of second lead syndrome and I don't really find the angst worth the payoff if my ship doesn't sail.

That being said, my favorite love triangle is hands down the love triangle from Healer - between Chae Young, Park Bong Soo and the mysterious night errand guy.

It was hilarious to see Ji Chang Wook competing with himself when he is both the friendzoned (or rather dongsaeng zoned) by Chae Young as well as the object of her crush. But the rooftop scene in which Bong Soo confesses really hit me in the feels. And those moments when he really wanted to confess his true identity and could not killed me. But boy, did the angst pay off well when the whole misunderstanding was cleared up.

Ah the book sounds interesting!
I don't tend to like love triangles because they're so manufactured but there are a few that stick in my mind. I think the best is in Page Turner with Yoo-Seul, Cha-Sik, and Jin-Mok. It's not a clearly established "love" triangle but its somewhat suggested and either way I think the relationships are quite interesting. (ps. for anybody who hasn't watched Page Turner, go watch it! it's only three eps, has both kim so-hyun and ji soo, and has an unique plot with a lot of heart).

Yes. I agree. Sounds interesting. Desi Lee falls in love with elusive artist Luca Dracos. Desi's father loves watching Kdama. I might be wrong, but judging by the author's previous book, we are in for lots of drama antics ridicule and snark, not some fangirl story. Well. At least sounds better than "50 Shades" approach to love.

Chae Young Shin, Park Bong Soo, and Healer - this trio would come to mind instantly at the mention of 'love triangle', even if the drama poster wasn't included up there in the first place.

Favourite love triangle because Park Bong Soo is essentially Healer, so they're competing against each other, and Chae Young Shin confided in one about her love to another. These hijinks were surefire way to provide some comical relief. But they also provided honest insight into each character's true feelings, like when Chae Young Shin first confessed to Park Bong Soo about how her heart flutters in Healer's presence; it was raw, genuine, uninhibited, something that she probably wouldn't be courageous enough to say to Healer face to face.
I also like that the confusion attached with the love triangle spurred the belated birth of Seo Jung Hoo into the world, because neither Healer nor Park Bong Soo is his real identity, and he knew better than to pursue a relationship on the basis of false identities.
This love triangle works because no hearts were broken. Its dynamics were utilised to induce humour, to propel the story forward, and to allow character development.

I've also got to put a vote here for Best Love, which may be my all time fave Hong sisters drama. This was a weird triangle since I never wanted second lead to win, but it was so much fun to watch nonetheless.

I mean, after like three episodes how could anyone NOT love Dokko Jin? Everything he did was INSANE and over-the-top but also executed with so much heart (no pun intended -- for those who've seen the drama, y'all know what I'm talking about). He did everything he could to protect the woman he loved. Then when they were finally together and he got jealous of the reruns of Ae-Jung's dating show with Perfect Man Pil-Joo? SO CUTE. And don't even get me started on how much I loved him and Ding Dong.

At the same time, Perfect Man Pil-Joo really WAS perfect, sincere, and so so adorable, even if I was actively rooting against him and knew he didn't have a chance in hell at winning Ae-Jung's heart. The scene where he finally concedes his loss and walks away? Kills me every time. Though then it cuts back to the cute and I'm healed and happy all over again.

Man, and now I miss peak Hong sisters drama.

My favorite love triangle was in Reply 1994 with Trash, Na Jung, and Chilbong. It was my first time watching a drama without knowing who the male lead was. When the husband was revealed I was so upset that it wasn't who I was rooting for. I understood what it was like to have second lead syndrome. :(

Coffee House. Lee Jin Soo / Seo Eun Young / Kang Seung Yeon

As a general rule, I find love triangles to be annoying but not particularly angsty. It is always clear who the breeding pair is, and the third leg of the triangle is clearly the third wheel. He's either way too perfect to ever actually consider, or she's way too crazy and deluded to have any real hope. I don't get SLS because even when the second lead is adorable (ie She Was Pretty) I know better than to waste any energy shipping him or her with the lead.

None of the above applies to Coffee House. I spent most of the drama expecting Seung Yeon to end up with Jin Soo. And was rather surprised when she didn't. The only other time this has happened to me was with Answer Me 1988, and that was because of obvious trolling on the part of the production. Coffee House wasn't trolling, though. I don't think.

What it did was make Seung Yeon the heroine of her own story, and then begin the drama looking through her eyes. It was only in hindsight that I realized this was because she was the observer, watching Jin Soo and Eun Young. At the time, it had me thinking that she was the heroine of the drama as well, and gave me my one real case of SLS. It is possible that I wouldn't have been fooled if I had watched it later in my drama career -- I read the recaps later and discovered that Javabeans had called Jin Soo / Eun Young from episode 2 -- but at the time, it took me by surprise.

I Hear Your Voice | Jang Hye-sung | Park Soo-ha | Cha Gwan-woo

At first, I was quite hesitant with the pairing because of the nature of it: a noona-dongsaeng relationship. Later on, I became accustomed to it until Cha Byeon entered the picture. I thought Jang Byeon and Cha Byeon might really end up together on the middle part of the series because I thought Soo-ha was dead. But then again... Park Soo-ha the policeman and Jang Hye-sung the attorney ended up together. It was quite sad for Cha Byeon and the Royce' chocolates. :(

P.S. I like the dramas that the writer of this series make. Oops, Pinocchio~

I love YA books with these kind of plot lines and this has been on my too-read shelf since the article last year. So excited!!!! I'm not sure if this can really classify as a love triangle cause none of them ended up romantically involved but I spent so long imagining what could've been if it was a full series its become a love triangle in my head. Sorry I'm getting ahead of myself I'm talking about page turner. Loved that mini drama so much and being a pianist myself there was just so much I could relate to, though I'm nowhere near as intense as they were. Anyway there's a part of me that kind of wanted her to end up with Ji soo (maybe cause he's always the 2nd lead) but I was also interested in where a relationship with Shin Jae Ha could've gone. Rivals to lovers anyone? Anyway maybe I'm delusional but I still feel conflicted about it even though technically there is nothing to feel conflicted about. Sometimes I think I'm in too deep with these k-dramas...

My favorite drama love triangle? Easy: Reply 1988. Deok Soon, Taek and Jung Hwan. The drama let us to believe that Jung Hwan and our heroine would end up together, as he was making the same moves as all the other kdrama heroes. He was grumpy outward, but just so sweet, kind and thoughtful on the inside. He didn´t say it with his words, but his awkward actions were clearly full of love towards Deok Soon. Only, she rarely got to see those actions...
Then there was Taek. For him it was so simple to follow his heart. He didn´t hide it. He knew he loved her and he confessed to his friends. He was brave and took chances, knowing full well he could get hurt. His actions towards her were always sweet. He didn´t hide his feelings for her. I have watched the scene, were he and Deok Soon get together over a hundred times. When he realizes that she had lied to him about their first kiss being a dream it is clearly visible that she broke his heart. BUT!!! He summoned all of his courage to ask her about her feelings now, when he JUST got his heart broken. This moment still gives me goosebumps. His courage to go after the girl he loves, was so impressive and thankfully it paid off.
Deok Soon was harder to read than the boys. At one point she was interested in Jung Hwan, manly because her friends told her that he was interested in her. She was at the age, were she was just hoping to get a boyfriend. Loving the notion of being a couple, seen as she was reading all these raunchy love stories. But it was her feelings for Taek that blindsided her. When he stood her up for their movie date, she just couldn´t shrug it off. The moment he kissed her in his room, she kissed him back, but she was so scared afterwards of messing it all up and destroying their friendship. She lied about that kiss being a dream, because she was terrified of the notion that there was a chance of losing him.
But what really sets this love triange apart from all the others and makes it my absolute favorite is the love between the boys for each other. When they both realize that their best friend also loves the girl, that they love, they come to a stalemate. The feelings of their friend was more important to them than their own feelings. THAT IS TRUE FRIENDSHIP! Jung Hwan tried to hate Taek and move forward, but he just couldn't because he loved him despite it all and he took care of him. Same goes for Taek. As soon as he was aware of his best friends feelings he backed off. Resulting in the heart break for both of them. It took them both years to realize that this stalemate wasn´t right and that neither could be happy like that. All three attempted to move on, but they just couldn't. YEARS had to go by, for them to think it would be okay to chase after Deok Soon.
In the end Taek got the girl, because he was willing to lose, not just his Baduk game, but also his heart. He had more courage and acted, while Jung Hwan hesitated.
This love triangle was just so full of familial love, that...

This love triangle was just so full of familial love, that it would be impossible for me to pick another triangle as powerful and heart breaking as this one! Maybe because of the shock, that it wasn´t the (perceived) main lead, who got the heroine, but for once the second lead. Of course there are so many shows with great triangles, were one contracts second lead syndrome, but this one was just so full of heart, that for me it seems impossible to beat.

The most memorable love triangle for me was in Reply 1994. It wasn't the best experience due to the nasty shipping wars and all. I admit that I was kinda rooting for Chilbongie the whole time because I feel like I was with him the whole time that he fell in love, from start till the end. Both guys kinda had the fair chance to show both their affections to the lead and even though I wasn't happy that Oppa got Najung, I still kinda accepted it because the show did give us reason on why he's like the endgame. I'm looking at you with judgement, School - Who are you.

Kim Shin - Eunsoo - Dowoo
Okay, so maybe it wasn't really a love triangle. I think but the show did mesmerize me with Dowoo's obsession with Eunsoo. Like I like how twisted it is but it still wasn't icky because it feels like he doesn't really view her romantically but he was just obsessive. I know that he' s the villain but I kept hoping that Eunsoo will be able to stop him from his psychopathic tendencies. *SPOILERS* Well, she did eventually stop him, well more like her death numb him from doing anything anymore.

My fav is to the beautiful you...I don't know whether anyone has mentioned it because there is lots of comment....so the triangle: kang tae joon|gu jae hee|cha eun gyeol. as vivid manga reader I read it many times and still doing it and I saw because of shun in jap version and that's how I came upon it but it didn't stop there I went to Taiwanese version too?.. So whatever maybe the version "nakatsu" is a laugh-till-you -cry and heart breaking character...I vouch for it?

It has been mentioned briefly. 
I watched the K-drama and the two Japanese versions (SHUN!).
I personally feel the SLS more in both Japanese versions, so that is why I did not mention this K-drama myself (I blame my Minho bias for it).

Your comment however, reminded me of Lee Hyun-Woo and his performance as Cha eun gyeol. It was not as Nakatsu as Toma Ikuta, but he had me either in stitches or crying and paid a lovely tribute to the original character in my opinion.

While I remain on the Sano ship in all versions, Nakatsu remains SLS in human form. A friend that you want to comfort and care for after getting rejected, and protect from all evil at all costs.

I was going through my k-drama soundtrack collection when I suddenly found a jewel. No, I literally did, it's Jewel in the Palace or Dae Jang Geum. I mean how could I forget the live triangle... Jang-geum| Min Jeong-ho| Choi Geum-young.
Seriously, what a powerful show & what powerful characters! This along with Emeperor of the Sea were the first K-dramas I ever watched & I was so impressed.
The love story itself was so beautiful , Jang-geum & Jeong-ho were just gorgeous (I mean as characters), their feelings were so heart touching. Jeong-ho was admirable, he was such a gentleman!!! And even Geum-young confessed to Jeong-ho in such an honorable way that I felt sorry for her even though I mostly hated her.
This was the most beautiful love triangle I ever saw.
I've never come across any other K-drama love which was as good as this.

I love that drama's other triangle. Jang-Geum / Jeong-Ho / the King . The king's refusal of marrying Jang-geum was truly an act of love. And then sending her off... I love that drama's love story a lot.

Emperor of the Sea, Jang Bogo|Jung-hwa| Yeom Jang
Another amazing love triangle from a great drama. Sadly my ship didn't sail. No ships sailed. They became titanic and drowned TT.TT I badly wanted Jang Bogo to stay with the beautiful & gentle Jung hwa. The ending was so sad.
I also didn't like Yeom Jang, EVER. I don't know maybe because he was a pirate & the bad guy or something; & what his betrayal in the end. I think he regretted it though.
But I liked this love triangle because they had affections for their loved ones till the end.
But still an amazing historical drama, it blew my mind the first time I saw it. The fight scenes were superb! And amidst all the tension was the forbidden romance of the leads....It was like a flower.

Jealousy Incarnate's Pyo Na-Ri, Lee Hwa-shin, Go Jung-won

What better love triangle than one that's built in Jealousy?

I also suffered the worst case of second lead syndrome in my whole drama watching life!
