Book & OST giveaway: I Believe in a Thing Called Love

We’ve got a fun new giveaway for you from the author of upcoming YA novel I Believe in a Thing Called Love, which is about a drama-lover who employs romance tricks and tropes from her favorite K-dramas in an effort to jumpstart her love life (I’m sure we’ve all seen enough dramas to imagine how well that goes over). For a chance to win a signed copy of the book and a drama OST, enter below!

Here’s a message from author Maurene Goo:

Hi, everyone! You might remember that a few months ago javabeans and girlfriday were kind enough to interview me about my upcoming YA novel, I Believe in a Thing Called Love. Since the book is about a girl trying to snag a guy using the “steps” she finds in K-dramas, well, sharing this book with Dramabeans readers was a no-brainer. Not only that, javabeans and girlfriday were kind enough to consult and brainstorm with me so that I could make sure the K-drama facts were right and they helped me create the K-drama starter guide in the back of the book, as well.

And in the years that I took to write this book, I’ve learned about the incredible fandom through this website, and have become a newbie fan myself (I’ve watched K-dramas since forever but am a total lightweight when it comes to K-drama knowledge, and I’m in awe of all of you!). Basically, I’m incredibly grateful that Dramabeans exists.

So, in celebration of my book coming out this month on May 30, I’m offering a giveaway to Dramabeans readers! There will be two winners selected—both will win signed copies of my book, plus either the Healer or Goblin original soundtracks (two of my favorites!).

To enter, just answer this prompt in your comment below: Tell us about your favorite drama love triangle!

And if you want a copy of my book for yourself, giveaway be damned, you can pre-order through Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

Contest Rules:

  • Leave a comment below telling us about your favorite drama love triangle.
  • Post as many comment entries as you want, through Sunday, May 14, at 12:00 noon, Pacific Time. (Here’s a handy-dandy time zone converter, so you can figure out what that is in your local time.)
  • We will email winners directly.

49 Days: Song Lee Kyung, Shin Ji Hyun, Jung Il Woo

Jung Il Woo as scheduler is such a great actor in this one given that he has a past love story with Song Lee Kyung when he was alive. But, then he becomes the scheduler of Shin Ji Hyun after her almost death, and she is actually Lee Kyung's sister. What makes this even more difficult is that Ji Hyun is allowed to enter Lee Kyung's body. This hurt me so much because the chemistry between Lee Kyung and Scheduler is so great, but it's actually Ji Hyun inside her sister's body. As scheduler works with Ji Hyun in Lee Kyung's body, he develops feelings again and remembers his past with Lee Kyung, but who exactly is he falling in love with again? It breaks my heart how this drama ended with seemingly no one having a happy ending.

Nonstop 4: Bong Tae Gyu, Han Ye Seul, Lee Andy

Bong Tae Gyu and Lee Andy are roommates and they argue like typical roommates. Later, they show respect and start to become friends. Andy used to hate Han Ye Seul, but he later comes to like her. By that point, Tae Gyu was already dating Ye Seul and they had to keep their relationship a secret from all of their friends. Meanwhile, Andy doesn't know this and tries to be cranky as possible towards Ye Seul while actually helping her by giving her food or strawberry milk cartoons saying he's full and to eat something, so that she doesn't bother his studying with her loud talking. Andy eventually finds out, which leads to conflict between the two roommates. Tae Gyu eventually goes off to the army and breaks up with Ye Seul. Meanwhile, Ye Seul gets closer to Andy as he starts being nicer to him. They start dating, but there's conflict in their relationship too.

Nonstop 2: Yang Dong Geun, Jang Nara, Jung Tae Woo
Two good friends, Jung Tae Woo and Yang Dong Geun, eventually come to conflicts because they both like Jang Nara. Dong Geun's story of liking Nara was so upsetting to watch because he already had a failed relationship, which made him hesitant to try with Nara. While Dong Geun was struggling, Tae Woo starts to develop feelings for Nara, which she doesn't return, but he eventually finds out Dong Geun likes Nara. This all adds to the tension in the group with Tae Woo eventually arguing with Dong Geun. Nara also grows more bold and pursues Dong Geun and they are such a cute couple that they are truly good together once he starts to pursue her too.

Nonstop 4: MC Mong, Hyun Bin, Lee Young Eun
It starts off with Lee Young Eun liking Hyun Bin while MC Mong just gets along with Young Eun. Also, Hyun Bin is Mong's taekwondo instructor and they have a close friendship. Hyun Bin tries so hard to reject Young Eun's advances even to the point of getting angry, which is so unlike him. Meanwhile, Mong grows more dejected as Hyun Bin tries to bring the two of them together after Mong grows mad at him, but then Mong shows remorse for his actions towards his friend. Eventually, Hyun Bin's efforts succeed and Young Eun shows feelings for Mong after he ends up showing his love and caring for her.

Nonstop 4: Jun Jin, Oh Seung Eun, Lee Yoon Ji

Lee Yoon Ji and Oh Seung Eun have always been amazing actresses. She was Seung Eun's roommate who is an amazing person who works hard to provide for her family while studying hard in scfhool. Jun Jin falls in love with Seung Eun and helps her with many things as she is struggling with all of her responsibilities, but Seung Eun struggles to have time to spend time with him when they finally start dating because she's so busy. Yoon Ji helps Jun Jin during this time, but stays loyal to Seung Eun who is her close friend and she puts aside her feelings, so that her two friends can be happy together.

Nonstop 4: Jang Geun Seuk, Jun Jin, Lee Yoon Ji

Jang Geun Seuk is Jun Jin's roommmate and also went to the same school as Yoon Ji as kids. In the beginning, Geun Seuk and Yoon Ji have a relationship of just picking on each other, but they eventually develop feelings for each other and start dating. Also, Geun Seuk is a medical student, but he shirks his studies and is a bit of a player. He finally becomes a good guy and shows that he truly cares for Yoon Ji and stays loyal to only her when he finally realizes that he loves her. Ever since Yoon Ji meet Jun Jin, she liked him and it was frustrating and sad to watch her not have her feelings returned. However, Jun Jin did help her and Geun Seuk by making Geun Seuk into someone that is reliable by constantly reminding to be mature and to live responsibly.

Nonstop 5: Kang Kyung Joon, Park Jin Woo, Hong Soo Ah

Kang Kyung Joon is such a nice guy with his easy going behavior and desire to provide for Hong Soo Ah despite his parents cutting him off financially, but Soo Ah was already dating Park Jin Woo for a long time before Kyung Joon even liked her. It's heartbreaking to watch Kyung Joon struggle with being a nice guy and keeping his feelings hidden from both Soo Ah and Jin Woo, but he finally reveals his feelings and Soo Ah rejects him. Jin Woo also doesn't care about Kyung Joon. But, eventually Soo Ah sees that she could be happy with Kyung Joon as he proves time and time again that he is a good guy. Jin Woo is a good boyfriend too, but to see Kyung Joon change so much into someone more responsible and still caring as always and yet still be rejected by Soo Ah hurts on so many levels.

Nonstop 5: Lee Jung, Goo Hye Sun, Lee Seung Gi
Lee Seung Gi is younger than Goo Hye Sun and they have a dongsaeng/nuna friendship, which is so frusturating to watch. I think all dongsaeng/nuna friendships that appear in later dramas took their examples from this couple. With Hye Sun and Seung Gi providing for each other when they are each weak and helping each other, it was so amazing to watch this. Lee Jung comes in the picture as someone who is the exact opposite of Lee Seung Gi. Jung is a bit of a irresponsible and goofy person, but he shows his friendship to both of them and his love for Hye Sun when he does things for her again and again without her knowing. I think Hye Sun is right to struggle with having two good guys who like her given that she's close to both of them, but I think she was right to choose Jung cause he changed so much and she loves him too. Jung also changes into a more responsible person who keeps his friends with Seung Gi and also his romance with Hye Sun.

Nonstop 5: Lee Min Woo, Jo Jung Rin, Kang Kyung Joon

Lee Min Woo, Jo Jung Rin, and Kang Kyung Joon are great friends who care for one another. Min Woo grew up with Jung Rin and had a love for her in the past. When they were kids, Min Woo was unpopular and Jung Rin was popular. When they grow up, it's the exact opposite with Min Woo being popular with women and Jung Rin not being popular with men. Kyung Joon befriends Jung Rin and Min Woo meets her after a long time, but he doesn't have the same closeness with her and picks on her. Kyung Joon hates his behavior, but Min Woo eventually changes and Jung Rin gets closer to him. Kyung Joon still disapproves of Min Woo particularly as he has feelings for Jung Rin and she criticizes him on why he can't give Min Woo a chance. It's a complicated love relationship between them with two men who are enemies and a woman who is friends with both of them.

School 2015: Han Yi An, Lee Eun Bi, Gong Tae Gwang

Gong Tae Kwang got the worse ending. Tae Gwang has an abusive father who is willing to force mental health care on him even though his dad is the cause of Tae Gwang's problem. Tae Gwang is such a loyal friend and he is happier at the end. But, it would have been nice if Lee Eun Bi and Tae Kwang ended up together because they have so much chemistry together. Meanwhile, Yi An is not that interesting of a character. Also, it's the people who play Tae Gwang and Yi An with the latter not being a good actor in this drama. This has changed especially now with his performance in Weightlifting Fairy Kim Book Joo.

Two Weeks: Jang Tae San, Seo In Hye, Im Seung Woo

Jang Tae San's ending is good as his name is cleared and he reunites with Seo In Hye and his daughter, but not fulfilling. He doesn't end up with In Hye as I expect. Tae San and In Hye have more chemistry and I wanted them to end up together and stay together instead of Tae San leaving to go take care of his life first. Im Seung Woo and In Hye don't have chemistry in this drama and he comes off as a jerk who is trying to capture Tae San partially due to his own bias. Meanwhile, Tae San fights and escapes death so many times and tries to clear his name and put those responsible for framing him and killing his friend behind bars.

Pinocchio: Choi Dal Po, Choi In Ha, Seo Bum Jo

Choi Dal Po, Choi In Ha, and Seo Bum Jo show amazing friendship in this drama. Bum Jo goes against his mother when he realizes that she has been the cause of the suffering of many especially Dal Po and In Ha, which shows their friendship. Also, Seo Bum Jo is such a caring guy who gives up his feelings in order for Dal Po and In Ha to be happy. In Ha and Dal Po also share loss with Dal Po losing both his parents caused largely by larger political and media forces, which includes In Ha's mom. Yet, In Ha shows her loyalty to Dal Po again and again when she helps him fight for his family's name and innocence. Stories of Dal Po and In Ha are tied together and they way belong together, but the pain that Bum Jo feels with his life crashing down around him is so real.

High Kick: Lee Yoon Ho, Lee Min Yong, Seo Min Jung

Lee Yoon Ho and Seo Min Jung have so much chemistry in this drama and I'm glad that they got their ending. Honestly, Min Jung never fit with Lee Min Yong despite the fact that they are both teachers and closer in age. He has too much history to be able to be happy with her given that he has a kid and was married to someone else. Yoon Ho grows from lazy student to someone who proves he can provide emotional support for Min Jung.

Kook Cheon Soo is the amazing doctor that I hope all doctors would strive to be. He's self-sacrificing, caring, and wise. There's a moment in the drama when he reveals that he was poor and grew up without the support of his parents and still became a doctor. Oh Chang Min is a jerk at first and he changes to be a better person. Oh Jin Hee should have chosen Kook Cheon Soo given how much chemistry they have. The relationship between her and Chang Min felt forced and there didn't seem to be any chemistry.

I usually stick it out only for the dramas that I know has my fully endorsed OTP, so I can avoid heart pangs from second lead syndrome. But Can You Hear My Heart had the most compelling love triangle for me. Granted, it hinted a bit incesty with the stepbrother, Joon-ha, and the leading lady, Bong Woo-ri, but they tugged at the heartstrings!

Ra Joon Mo and Baek Seung Chan are both amazing guys, but Tak Ye Jin was right to choose Joon Mo. Seung Chan doesn't match as well with Ye Jin as Joon Mo does. Joon Mo has the history and closeness with Ye Jin that Seung Chan doesn't. From Joon Mo helping Ye Jin move every time she has moved somewhere else and being there for her countless of times and knowing little details about her, he's the match for her.

Sung Joon and Hye Jin have the rich history from childhood. But, Shin Hyuk is such a great friend and has such great chemistry with Hye Jin that is amazing. Shin Hyuk comforts her in a way that seems authentic and this is more due to the chemistry of the actor/actress. For the sake of chemistry, Hye Jin should have chosen Shin Hyuk. Nonstop 2: Lee Jae Eun, Yang Dong Geun, Jo Kyung-Jin

Yang Dong Geun and Lee Jae Eun are my favorite drama couple ever. They have history from childhood, complement each other well while poking fun at each other, and have great chemistry. However, Jae Eun didn't always like and set her friend, Inna (played by Jo Kyung-Jin) with Dong Geun. Their relationship causes a strain in the friendship between Jae Eun and Dong Geun, since she doesn't want him to see Jae Eun even as a friend. This leads to hurt feelings between them and she eventually confesses to Dong Geun. Meanwhile, Dong Geun and Inna were having problems in their relationship because she was keeping him from all his friends since they all know Jae Eun and eventually break up. Jae Eun and Dong Geun end up together. While they don't stay together, I think their relationship shows an accurate relationship instead of relationships in dramas were people start dating and end up together until the very end.

While Go Nam Soon, Park Heung Soo, and Song Ha Gyung don't end up in any kind of relationship, the chemistry between Nam Soon and Ha Gyung is amazing. Meanwhile, Heung Soo shows hints that he also is attracted to Ha Gyung. However, the point of School 2013 is the friendship and how friends can help you grow up through school and its difficulties, so I'm glad that no one ends up together, which would only complicate relationships and take away from the drama.

Park Dong Joo and Yoon Soo Wan have such a great relationship and chemistry. From their love during their high school years to their separation in the midst of tragedy to their chemistry when they don't know each other to when they finally meet and date, their history and relationship is amazing. They are also suited for each other as people who have lost family and they help each other through their pain. Always. Always. Always. The one between Go Mi Nam, Tae Kyang, and Shin Woo. This was a very heartbreaking one because it was extremely obvious that Shin Woo loved Mi Nam very dearly. And, he looked out for her in a very compassionate and tender way, unlike the cold way Tae Kyang did. That's why my heart always went out to him. Plus, if he hadn't looked out for Mi Nam she would have been in toooons of trouble, he saved the day for her a multiple number of times. It's just knowing that his feelings for her were so real and sincere which makes this one love triangle hurt so much. Thing is, i support Mi Nam and Tae Kyang because i know that those two genuinely loved each other, and they connected in a way that was very special and beautiful. Shin Woo lacked that with Mi Nam. It was too one sided, and in a way, i feel like he also liked her not just because she was endearing, but because he enjoyed taking care of her, in a way. He would have been the always protective boyfriend which isn't a good thing if Mi Nams wings were meant to spread widely. Ultimately, everyone ended up where they deserved, but in the end, i still can't help but wonder if Mi Nam would have been better with Shin Woo instead, simply because he was always such a huge sweet heart. His hurting puppy heart made me very sad, and i hoped he'd find a different love in the future.

Boys over flowers, hands down!! This is because till the very end it was just SO hard to decide who Jan Di would be better off with. Yes, she loved Gu Jun Pyo very much. Yes, he loved her very much too. Buuuut, can we simply ignore how he was a total jerk to her in the beginning? Remember the time he commanded her to try to lick off ice cream from his shoes? His behavior towards her did change later. He became very loving, kind, and warm hearted. And, to his defense, the cold exterior of his is something he's put up on the outside to protect himself from the world which had only been harsh towards him. However, while that helps us understand his character, it doesn't really give us a place to be able to just forget how much of a bully he'd been to her in the past. My heart did melt a few times, because when these two were together, he'd make it very obvious that his feelings for are strong, real, and true. And he made her heart melt too. But i don't know...i mean, just because he loves her now, does that mean what he did before is okay? And then, we have Ji Hoo. The sweet, tender, and kind one. We know that Jan Di would definitely always be safe with him around. He'd take care of her. He'd love her. He'd be there for her. He was quite simply, the one. The kind of guy most girls would only be able to dream about. However, at the same time, as endearing as Ji Hoo was, Jan Di couldn't be with him because she loved someone else.
That's why i was such a huge fan of this love triangle.
Because till the end, i just couldn't make up my mind.
(But Gu Jun Pyo got a few brownie points cuz he's hot!)

This has been mentioned before but the 'love triangle' in 'Healer' between Chae Young-shin and Seo Jung-hoo as Healer and Seo Jung-hoo as Park Bong-soo is quite unforgettable and my favourite love triangle. When do you ever see two alter egos fighting for the same girl? This is also the best kind of love triangle because as someone who regularly suffers from Second Lead Syndrome, this can only be described as a win-win situation.

(Honourable mention is the love triangle in 'The Prime Minister and I' between Da-jung/Truck O'Doom/Subway - because that truck only wants someone to love but Subway keeps luring Da-jung back to its establishments instead XP)

Reply 1988. It's the first time I hated dramas cos it reflected the pain of missed timing and what ifs so realistically. I mean dramas r for viewers to escape reality, right? I didnt expect myself to be experiencing second hand heartache through dramas. My heart still aches for JH. Definitely Healer. The triangle between Healer and Park Bong Soo was so much fun to watch. Then they added Seo Jung Ho into the mix. I was practically squealing. When Young Shin rejected Park Bong Soo for Healer, his reaction was priceless. Oh, to be simultaneously rejected and confessed to. But then Young Shin found out who Healer was, and just before they went into the police station together, Young Shin told Healer she missed Park Bong Soo. The look on his face was hilarious. I love this OTP so much!

I'll try one more entry bc I've just remembered another one of my favourite love triangles which is the one between Yeon Do, Kim Yeol and Ha Joon in Sassy Go Go.

Although there was a clear OTP in this show I still thought that this love triangle was as lovely as it could be (Ji Soo you are such a cute puppy)

I always find that love triangles between a girl and two friends to be quite heart tugging because it's sad to see that friendship ultimately break down at some stage. This one was especially hard because of the troubles that Ha Joon was going through. The great thing about this love triangle though was that both Kim Yeol and Yeon Do were helping Ha Joon and they put their friendships first. To this day that gummy bear confession from Ha Joon still makes me sad, what is it with me and all these second leads?!

Love triangle? I preffer if there wasn't one at all in a drama similar to "Descendants of the Sun". However, as a concept something like in "Hyde Jekyll, Me" will be nice to see. Although not neceseraly how they did it in the drama as it didn't reach its potential. It offers an unik dilema for all involved, as it's not only about love.

Spring Waltz

Daniel Henney aka as Phillip on this drama is the perfect example of 2nd lead syndrome. The main couple is absolutely sweet and you can see why they get to stay together with the whole point of love and faith and falling in love with your first love all over again but come one Daniel *cough* I mean Phillip was pure perfection. Handsome, funny, sweet, caring, lovely, handsome, loyal, smart, tall, handsome, adorkable, sincere, motivated, tragic past, walking language dictionary, did I mention handsome? well handsome again. The female lead had a difficult job not falling for this guy and he stayed tehre broken hearted taking care of his best friend and the love of his life.

This triangle is so perfect because includes not just a one sided love 2nd lead who doesn't play tricks but also so much bromance, not as strong as the current bromances on air but it was perfect, subtle.

Finally. Did I mention how handsome and perfect Daniel.... I mean Phillip is? Yes / No , well just in case he is handsome and perfect and so much more.

My favorite love triange ever is Ji Sung Joon (Park Seo Joon), Kim Hye Jin (Hwang Jung Eum), and Shin Hyuk (Choi Si Won) from She Was Pretty. I like that all of them are friends and not one hurt the other person just to get the person they love. I think they portrayed love and relationship in a very mature way (although there are still childlike aegyo from time to time). This drama showed me that love doesn't have to be intense all the time, it can be as comforting and enjoyable journey too. ;)

joo won, ra im, oska - i just love how ra im idolizes oska oppa, and how joo won is freakingly jealous of his cousin.

shi won, yoon je and tony - the same. yoon je knows shi won is a crazy fan, yet he goes ahead and asks him whom she loves more.

oh fandom!
