Drama viewership ratings for the week of Nov. 6-12, 2017

We have a couple of new entries into the pack of currently airing shows, though for the most part we’re holding steady. On Mondays and Tuesdays, Witch’s Court ticked back upward—and Jung Ryeo-won is still acing it with this feisty character—and pulled a few percentage points away from its rival shows, Temperature of Love and 20th Century Boy and Girl, the latter of which dipped to a series low at 2.5% on Monday. It’s too bad, since 20th Century is a sweet romance, though I don’t necessarily think it’s an egregious wrong, because I do find that it lags in overall pace.

OCN debuted its romantic-comedy Meloholic, but ratings numbers are quite scarce so they didn’t make the chart. I did read that the high for this Monday-Tuesday OCN timeslot is under 1%, for what it’s worth. If Meloholic starts taking off, though I expect the media to start giving us more numbers. Ratings were better for tvN, whose Because This Life Is Our First reached a series high with Tuesday’s episode. Yay!

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, Hospital Ship vacated its slot and MBC didn’t premiere a new drama, so its competitors enjoyed bumps in ratings. Buam-dong Revenge Club enjoyed its highest number to date for Thursday’s Episode 10 at 6.1%.

And on weekends, MBC launched its new series Money Flower, which pulled in solid premiere numbers (10.3% and 12.7%). I still find this new trend of airing both episodes on Saturday only, or Sunday only, to be odd, but I suppose they’ve got their reasons.

Money Flower seems like one of those over-the-top makjang dramas with old chairman and hunger games for his approval. It also feels like plot would go downhills after episode 10 (please dramagods prove me wrong)
Still, Jang Hyuk slays this role and I absolutely love and cheer for OTP, SO YAY FOR GOOD RATINGS, I hope ratings would rise even more after second episode

I actually like drama like Money Flower, especially if it is done right. It is nothing new, but I love that this drama could balance my drama lists at the moment. 24 epi is good, instead of 50 epi. Agree, Jang-hyuk slays this role.

I haven't started on MF yet, the plot sounds boring, i wouldn't watch it if it's not for JH, he's the reason i am giving it a try, i hope it will do good for him, i was happy that Voice did well for him, although I loved BM, it's sad that it didn't get a decent ratings at least.

I don't think any ahjumma will complain about makjang especially if it's just a 24 episode drama.

It'd be nice to see a little bit of competition in this time slot. KBS has been dominating this for too long.

Good on MBC for casting Jang Hyuk in hope to get out of this slump.
I'm rooting for "Money Flower" to keep rising.

Happy that Buamdong Revenge
Club reached 6% and the highest rating for tvn drama at this moment. But also sad that both Buamdong and Go Back Couple will end next week 😭

Money Flower started solid - storyline and rating, considering that MBC weekend slot is in slump. Hope it continues to rise and reach 20% or more. The plot is nothing new tbh, but I do enjoy power hunger and battle in chaebol family plot, different strokes for different folks. I'm also busy fangirling Jang-hyuk and being distracted with his good look and charisma. LOL.

and a double impressive feat to achieve 20% or 30% in the week dramas. Not the weekend family dramas.

If anyone broadcast can get a weekend drama close to or achieve national status (40%) in this day and age it would be KBS.
"First Love" 2nd highest drama to date with 65.8% was on this time slot.
It would not happen on a weekday slot. The days of "Dae Jang Geum" and "Sam Soon" are long gone.

More channels+ increase in dramas which exploits different genres +online streaming+busy life
All of these are main reasons why the ratings have fallen over the time.

I think many young people are watching it online rather when it airs on tv but i really don't understand how we went from several dramas getting around 20% in the first half of the year to like hardly any dramas getting 10% in the 2nd half of the year

Its not like other dramas are getting 10% either even with senior actors like SHJ or Ha ji won. On the other hand wyws is doing great in advertising and 2049 ratings even won an award. That counts a lot for dramas these days. Its pretty popular in SK and internationally. So no need to shit on wyws alone

Shin Hye Sun is just fantastic in My Golden Life. Just totally amazing. And she completely outshine Park Shi Hoo. I have been remembering that Park Shi Hoo is a good actor but he is so powerless here. He is just... there. That's all. Sadly they have no chemistry. Shin Hye Sun had a great chemistry with Cho Seung Woo in Secret Forest but here... Maybe it's because Park Shi Hoo is kind of wooden.

SHS is impressive, i loved the look on her fcae in episode 20 where She was looking at the stairs waiting for DK to come down to help her when his dad found out that she's fake, that look on her face was so amazing, it felt real, she's getting a lot of praise from k-netz.
I haven't seen PSH in anything so I can't judge him but it might be that's how his character is written, he's just a robot follows his family rules without giving anything a thought, i find his sister interesting because she's kind of rebellious.

Aigooo...you can't compare Jo Seung Woo with Park Shi Hoo, acting wise they are in different league. That said, the writing of My Golden Life didn't give enough room for PSH to showcase his acting although he's better in the latter episodes.

Really happy to see an increase in Because this life is our first. A very good drama.
I am surprised NOT seeing double digits for While you were sleeping. Hopistal ship is out, so it would have been easier for it go for double digits right? I love the thriller in the drama Plus Wootak. I just dont like the romance part now. But i still like watching this drama overall.

Revenge club is going good. NIce to see an increase of 0.1%. I die laughing at so many parts in this drama.

Last but not the least, my favourites from the all the dramas Go Back Couple. Glad that is steadily increasing. This show is so movie like. So much emotions and i dont think have cried so much in a while, while watching dramas. This drama makes me ugly cry for the things we can relate to so much in real life. Such a simplistic and emotion wise really realistic drama. I would recommend this to anyone who is trying to watch a GOOD CONTENT drama.

I am surprised why people are expecting double digits from a fantasy crime drama like wyws which isnt even original in terms of plot and has a younger cast.

Even dramas with senior actors who are generally ratings magnet cant get double digits. Wyws is popular online and talked about a lot as expected.

1

Required fields are marked *

I have to disagree here.

It is a fantasy crime drama, but it from the writer who gave such big hits like I hear your voice and Pinocchio which both included Lee jong suk. People LOVE him. Both of these dramas were crime dramas with romance in it. . Pinochhio was a hit, with the most YOUNGEST actors all combined. Also Suzy is also here, and she is very popular actress in korea, despite her almost average acting. All of these elements combined it, it should have reached double digits and more now.

Originality sometimes doesnt bring ratings. Look at the weekend family dramas. They almost have all the same things in the content , yet the ratings for such makjang dramas remain the same .They always reach around 30% after 2 episodes and it continues or increases till the end. I am always baffled how people can watch such dramas barring a few, where everything to the dialouges are so same in the weekend family dramas.

So a fantasy drama+Lee jong suk+suzy+young +talented cast+same writer ,should have reached double digits now, and it is pretty surprising since there are only 2 episodes left to meet its end.

Required fields are marked *

Um the average rating of Pinocchio is 11% . How is that a higj rating? Wyws is airing at a time when no dramas even by veteran casts are getting double digits. I am sure if Pinocchio was aired now it would have got lower ratings than what it got.

And the writing in wyws is not as good as ihyv or pinocchio either. That coumts a lot. There are plenty reasons why it is getting single digits. I dont understand why is it so difficult to understand. Lee Jong Suk's dramas typically get 11-14% but are popular. Wyws follows the same paytern except coz it is not as good as his other works and the ratings slump this year it is getting lower ratings.

Weekend dramas are watched by elders who evidently likes to watch recycled contents. You cannot compare that to this situation. The demographic which switches the TV is not the demographic which is attracted by wyws hence its very popular online but not on tv.

I've been a longtime fan of LJS (check comments in School 2013 recaps for receipts) and while the average ratings for Pinocchio were around 11 percent, it did stay p much consistently in the double digits and top of its time slot from its second week onwards, and that was during a major drama ratings slump too (not a single weekday drama aired in 2014 after the end of Empress Ki/YFAS managed to cross 14 percent). And it topped out at a series high of 13.8 percent for its finale.

2017, in contrast, has had several dramas cross that mark since the beginning of the year - Chief Kim, Whisper, Defendant, Rebel, Man Who Dies To Live (two of those even crossed 20 percent)....heck even Hospital Ship got 13 percent at some early point in its run. I'm not really buying that the 2017 slump is worse than the 2014 one, to explain why WYWS is clocking in lower than its predecessors after being so hyped.

6

@pogo: I agree with all of your points. WYWS isn't a flop, but it's performing below expectations.

1

Romantic Doctor and Legend of Blue Sea of got over 15% too

0

And people were shitting on Ruler fore not getting 20% when the far more hyped WYWS isn't even getting double digits!

At least Ruler managed 20% in Seoul based on TNS ratings which has covers more young people.

This is a year of drama slumps and Defendant and Whisper are the only dramas that crossed 20% till now.

1

There are probably some pretty good reasons for that expectation:-

1) Cast. Lots of built in name recognition and popularity
2) Writing team with a fairly good track record
3) Broadcast by one of the 3 main channels
4) Story is easy, romantic, cute. No gore, horror etc
5) High production standards
6) Fantasy/romance dramas (I don't think this qualifies as a crime drama, honestly) are pretty well accepted as a genre, for example, Goblin, MLFAS, LOTDBS, SWDBS.

WYWS would have been an easy pick for a ratings favorite, out of the gate. Even in this time of lower than average ratings, Hospital Ship managed the low-mid teens. There was every reason to believe that WYWS could at least match that.

It is not unfair to say that WYWS performed below expectation ratings wise although it is not a dismal failure either.

Both my fave shows hit new highs this week, yay! BRC hit 6% (hope it can hit 7% in its final week) and BTLIOF finally hit 4% (hope that eventually we can hit 5%). Love both shows, tvN are now back in my good books after disappointing me most of the year.

Money Flower did really well, MBC must be happy. I was expecting it to be very Dramatic but it's pretty restrained in its execution so far (nice cinematography too), good pacing, and with a solid cast. It's nothing new but compelling nonetheless! It was nice seeing Jo Byung-kyu again after GG1979, he has potential imo. I'm looking forward to the next episodes.

Money flower is just so bad. I am baffled with jang hyuk's drama choice this time, from voice, chuno, fated to love he goes to money flower, which is makjang, over the top and the topic is such an overused trope. I am pretty much disappointed since I really like him as an actor. Also park se young keeps giving me villainish vibe, since she has always just done that, erm.

Makjang is not necessary a bad thing, it depends on how we see it and our preference. It's true it is overused trope, but it's good to see him doing different genre after Voice and it's been a while he isn't do this kind of drama. Park Se-young only did villain roles two or three times as far as recall, and she has always acting nice girl, that I was surprised that you said she keeps giving you villainish vibe or maybe I have seen her works more than you.

But purely as a matter of mathematical fact, HS averaged a 9.5% rating over its run. WYWS is currently, with two weeks left, averaging a 8.2% rating.

This is clearly not what SBS hoped for.

I find The Package so underrated. It is a very meaningful drama hidden in the guise of a travelogue. I find myself watching all the character's stories, which is most unusual because most dramas only create attractive lead characters. I enjoyed everything about the drama: the story, sceneries, ost. Highly recommend anyone to have a watch. The story actually builds up gradually. Most underrated show in current time.

While You Were Sleeping isn't getting high ratings though it's one of the most popular dramas of the year, and one of the most watched online. I wouldn't call that a flop. But I really hope it hits the double digits mark on its last week. I find that show really beautiful.

BRC is actually doing well. It's already part of the list of highest rated CABLE Korean Dramas. That's really great.

Because This Life is Our First - Really adorable!!! Hopefully it'll get higher which I'm sure it will since it only has 6 episodes left omg! So excited! My Mondays and Tuesdays feel so complete with this show.

My Golden Life is doing so well. Wow it's constantly on the 30%+ mark. How? Is this worth starting then?

I think if a show hits the double digit mark, it's already considered a hit (for public dramas). Cable dramas are somewhat overpowering them. Am I the only one who compares this year's ratings to the ratings of last year's shows? haha
