Welcome to Dramabeans’ first vlog! (+GIVEAWAY)

Ahhh, we’re on video and you can see us now!

Despite all of our instincts telling us not to, @girlfriday and I have fiiiiinally joined the new generation and got together in front of the camera for the first time to do what we like to do most: talk about dramas, what’s going on in the news lately, and tell you guys what’s going on here at Dramabeans central.

We’re making this a weekly series (there! We committed! We have to do it now!), and we’d love to hear your thoughts on what you’d like to hear us talk about, what you think of the format, and even what kind of products you’d like to see most in future giveaways!

We’ll also be answering reader questions in future videos, so be sure to leave us your questions in the comments below.

On to the giveaway!⠀

In celebration of our new K-drama & K-beauty shop, we’re kicking off our first Instagram giveaway by giving away one full set of the Peripera Airy Ink Velvet tints! (That’s all 10 colors.) 💋💋💋⠀

GIVEAWAY RULES:

  2. Like the Instagram giveaway post

  4. And that’s it! Giveaway is open internationally and will end on Monday, November 13, 2017. Good luck!

(We will be doing lots more giveaways in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for more free stuff in following videos.)

I would also point out that there is no one who is "native" to the US unless we are talking about Native Americans who are the only true natives. Many people who grew up outside the US including Koreans speak English fluently equal and better than native speakers. Many people who were born elsewhere or had families that were elsewhere, but moved to the US at some point do speak English fluently.

I meant native in English! I was jealous of their accent since no matter how hard I try I can't get rid of mine, and fluency - I've been learning English for most of my life and you won't catch me writing 5-page long summaries twice a week in it.

I read this piece javabeans did a long time ago about how she was raised in the US, but I do believe her family immigrated from Korea. She watched kdramas growing up in California, got a degree is writing, figured out how to make her obsession into the coolest job ever, and the rest is Dramabeans history.

Heol! My jaw literally dropped when I saw this! I remember years ago, someone posted a photo of you two and it was a big deal because you were strictly in incognito mode in those days. I applaud your courage to put yourselves out there like this-- you've come a long way.

Btw, I was one of those who said "JB's baaack" when the first Revolutionary Love recap was out, but I didn't mean to imply that you'd been away from Dramabeans-- I know you're always working super hard behind the scenes. I just meant that it was a relief to see you invested in a drama again after having experienced what seemed like was a particularly depressing drama-drought.

Rock on!

4

Required fields are marked *

but clearly the idea of the concept is to expand reach aka followers.. so 1 person brings in two.. and isn't insta really popular in the US and amongst celebs.. more so than FB etc..

from business point of view..makes sense..garner as many followers as possible on one site to begin with..else distributed viewership doesn't translate into business..

but ofcourse eventually they would also need to consider other platforms..because all these things change so fast

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I would say Twitter and Instagram are the most popular with celebrities.

I'm not sure how distributed the viewership would be because most people are on all three but you would gain/lose some with people who have one but not the other. I would think it would break fairly evenly. Twitter/Instagram seemed to be an addition rather than a complete replacement like how Facebook replaced MySpace, though I would say they have gotten more popular so maybe they will soon enough.

I was going to say this, but everyone knows how partial I am! Thank you for that confirmation. The cinematography of that first episode was as good as any film I’ve ever seen. Not just the Goryeo part but how the red scarf was highlighted in the color-muted scene on the bridge, the camera work and set design at Goblin’s house, the music that set the epic tone of the Goblin’s life, the ship scene, Gong Yoo anchoring it all with his acting...should I go on?

Woo-hoo, loved the v-log!! Can't wait to see more. One favor though, when either one of you is saying an actor/actress name, could you say it just a tiny bit slower. It takes my brain a moment to realize who you are talking about. Thanks! 😀

6
7
reply

Required fields are marked *

Actually, can that be a whole video too? How to pronounce names with the slowest, most articulate pronunciation as if you're talking to a 5 year-old. I'm so embarrassed when I'm talking to Koreans and butchering the names of my favorite actors/actresses. I'm just horrible at remembering and catching the right pronunciations, so it would help to have a video to come back to.

5
reply

Required fields are marked *

It'll help you in the long run to be honest. Way back when I first started listening to their podcasts I also had trouble catching the names as a non-Korean speaker. I quickly got used to it, though, and now have no trouble at all even though my Korean is still more than lacking haha. At least I can now say and recognize the names!

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

That would be awesome for my slow ahjumma brain to process the names especially in Korean sometimes they sound a little different than how I imagine them to be with English spellings.

If you are talking about actors out of the context of the drama you are discussing, I would really appreciate if you reference the actors with the dramas they are recently in (similar to the news articles on DB) although I would hate if that makes your natural conversation flow feeling cumbersome.

3
4

Required fields are marked *

They could have the name in hangul and romanized (is that the accurate word for names?) and also the last couple of projects along the bottom like they did for their topics, maybe?

3

That's a good idea!

0

Required fields are marked *

I know for the podcasts they write out the names of every actor mentioned in the podcast. That was very helpful to reference when I wasn't sure I heard a name quite right! They could even do that in the description box of the YT video.

5
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes, the podcast list of names was very helpful.
I had special trouble with the names in the video because I depended on the Youtube automatic translations to help me thru the so-so sound quality, and it turns out Youtube sucks at Korean names even worse than I do.

3

It's so good to watch you both! I got my account on Dramabeans just recently, but I've been a reader of the site for more than 3 years now, and I have to thank you guys for everything that you've done here! Your writing styles make reading the recaps so much fun, and I've often just watched the first episode of a drama to get the context, and then read through the rest of the episodes on Dramabeans (saves so much time :p) Looking forward to more of the vlogs!
P.S : I feel the same as jb about embarrassing scenes in dramas/stories. :D

Congratulations JB and GF on your vlog! It's great!! Especially to see you (can practically see the wheels spinning in your minds as you listen to each other! Heh!). This site is just getting better and better!! 👏❤💪

One question I have, which I hope you can answer, is: Is there is a reason (like a known trend, or a secret drama production company's agreement), why there are dramas that come out at about the same time with very similar themes or set ups or bits of plot details. It's like a nice conspiracy.

The latest I noticed is having female script writers and both having a hard time with the same actress as the main writer! (Because This Life is Our First and Temperature of Love), a few years ago there were shows of divorced couples coming back together (Emergency Couple and Cunning Single Lady), and in between, there were spates of shows with similar past life premise(s), or time travel/warp or multiple personalities, or grim reapers, or leads with memory loss... They seem to pop up at not too far apart (within a year or two?) in terms of time, as if they were planned. I find that strange when these shows would have been written by different people and could have been produced at different times. It's always got me wondering. JB and GF, do you have a clue? 😃

4
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes!! Great question! I've been wondering the same thing too.

0

Required fields are marked *

Haha, this conspiracy has been going on for years. The most extraordinary example was Kill Me Heal Me and Hyde Jekyll and Me airing at exactly the same time. And both having courted the same actor for lead.

So good to see your faces! Ah!! I like the idea of you two vlogging a lot! I've been an avid dramabeans reader since 2010? 2011? I can't remember now...haha it's good to see the beautiful smiles behind the charming and wonderfully quirky personalities!

Around 11 minutes into the video it seemed like ya'll finally began to relax and really open up more which was good to see. I would love to see a good mixture of how chill you two are in your podcasts with the new video format. Maybe it'll just take a couple more videos for ya'll to get used to it ;) I liked the discussion of dramas and news segments and the giveaways, those were great.

What would you two think about combining your variety roulette series with a reaction video format? Every now and then? Picking a series to drop in on for one episode and letting us see you react to it?

I adore Marriage Not Dating, but I would have to pause so much watching that show and it never seemed like JB or GF ever had a problem! Same with Oh Hae Young Again.

With Go Back Couple, I've actually had no problem at all though, which is bizarre, because I always thought I was really bad about this stuff. There are still some scenes from dramas I haven't fully watched because of my second-hand embarrassment.

Lol, but I actually got so much enjoyment from the leads in GBC announcing all their issues for the college to hear, because it provided fun commentary on their "choices" (leaving their child behind etc.)!

To be honest, I much prefer podcasts to vlogs, purely because of how I consume the content (I listen to podcasts to and from my bus to work, which isn't that far of a walk - a mile or so - but having something to keep me occupied does make it easier in the winter).
