[Best Friends Forever] Celebrating dramaland’s odd friendships

Jealousy Incarnate

By @gadis

A childhood friend, a best friend you once met at some school club, or a coworker-turned-closest-confidant. Those might be the kinds of friendships we can easily relate to because they’re something we have experienced, one way or another. But don’t we also have that odd friendship? The one that makes people go, “Huh?” listening to how you two first met and became friends. An ex-love-rival who bonded with you through a shared jealousy and pain, perhaps. Or maybe the president of your anti-fan club that turned into your best friend. This essay will be about them—characters who have built unusual friendships with the most unexpected people in their lives.

The first one that came to mind was Jugglers’ Nam Chi-won and Vice President Do. In the middle of so many annoying, frustratingly oppressive, and intentionally hurtful in-laws, their little relationship brought such a delight to my watching experience. How brilliant was it to have the man who ultimately understood our prickly and emotionally distant hero be his ex-father-in-law?

Jugglers

I love how Vice President Do could needle him about his unbending way toward people in his work life without Chi-won having to immediately change his ways. The older man might be his immediate boss, but the familial ties that once bound them together gave a layer of closeness that allowed Chi-won to argue back or pass the criticism off as fatherly concern. At the same time, it also gave Vice President Do the power to dig to the root of Chi-won’s trust issues and urge him to start trusting his new secretary. It’s interesting how the divorce in Chi-won’s life gave them an extra line where they could stand as boss-employee with a much diminished formality and also as some sort of family, though with the added distance needed to view everything more objectively.

Smart Prison Living brought another memorable and unexpected friendship in the form of Beobja and Jun-ho. We first met Jun-ho as the strict, law-abiding prison guard who distanced himself from both the other guards and the inmates. He would be the first person to tell our hero, Je-hyuk, not to be too good to his cellmates because they were all bad people who had committed crimes. Everything in prison was black and white with him and who would be more perfect to change his mind than Beobja, the young man who was in and out of prison like it was his own home, completely unruffled by Jun-ho’s dismissive attitude, with an optimistic streak a mile wide?

Smart Prison Living

They are two fundamentally different people with different moral codes who come from vastly different life circumstances. Their friendship started with tons of baby steps, helped with a good dose of shared adoration and care for Je-hyuk and his baseball career. Maybe that’s why it was extra satisfying to watch Jun-ho starting to greet Beobja back, to see the two cups of coffee he always brought to the training facility turned into three, to realize that he finally let the younger man call him hyung instead of the usual Officer Lee, and finally to watch these two casually discussing the troublesome inmates from Jun-ho’s wing. I love how this relationship taught Jun-ho that you do need to know when to bend the rules a bit, and how sometimes kindness can be more impactful to some inmates. On the other hand, it also taught Beobja that there is actually a second chance at life and that he can always choose to be the better person than he gave himself credit for.

This next friendship is my personal favorite. While dramaland is still so stingy with good female friendships, Jealousy Incarnate brought me the epic frenemy-turned-awesome-momance in Ja-young and Sung-sook. These two capable and intelligent career women started off as legendary rivals both at work and in their personal lives. They hilariously have similar taste in everything. Of course they married the same man and then later divorced him because they were too busy with their work. They once again got involved in each other’s lives when their ex-husband passed away and they fought for their daughter’s custody, and then somehow found themselves falling for the same chef landlord.

Jealousy Incarnate

I reckoned that everything would go down in the usual clichéd direction, but nope. These two moms were forced to call a truce the moment they both sneaked into their daughter’s house in order to try winning her affection back. Hijinks ensued when they had to live together and share a room and even back each other up in many situations involving their ex-in-laws. Who would have thought that a relationship this fraught with rivalry could end up with these two women living together with their daughter, forming an unusual family they all craved for? Or that they would come out from this impossible situation having found a new best friend they never knew they needed?

Marriage Not Dating

Last but not least is Jang-mi and Hoon-dong, the ex-lovers from Marriage Not Dating who found themselves becoming each other’s voice of reason. After such a messy and pitiful breakup that led to a stalking accusation in court, I never thought they would get involved with each other ever again. But I guess dating each other’s best friend afterwards would do that to you. Between being a failed cupid and the whole don’t-you-dare-hurt-him/her routine, these two found a new comfortable dynamic that allowed them to wail hysterically in each other’s arms or shake some sense into the other’s heads. Sometimes, an ex-lover who has seen every embarrassing thing about you and knows your first-world problems inside-out does make for a pretty good friend.

What really caught my interest about these friendships is the simple acknowledgment that humans are unique and have no set reaction in any given situation. I love how these little stories reminded me that we can, indeed, find friendship in the most unexpected place, at the most unexpected time, and with the most unexpected people. And really, if these two kids who were at each other’s throats the moment they became deskmates could survive the next thirty years as the most unlikely best friends ever, maybe there is no truly odd friendship out there. Just people who understand each other best despite their unusual history.

Me too, me too... And I have never wanted to watch it before, because I don't like the OTP, and GKP doesn't get the girl, but maybe for these secondary characters... maybe one day I will... 😉

I love Go Kyung-pyo, and I was a bit sorry for him at first, but Jo Jung-suk does pathetic-hilarious angst so well, you'll be changing sides :-p . Jealousy Incarnate is seriously 10/10.

What a beautiful tribute to friendships @gadis and a wonderful reminder that we should always be open to the possibility of finding friends in unexpected ways and places.

I have a unlikely friendship story of my own. I met him about a decade ago and he was 3 decades younger. I am an Asian-American raised on the West Coast, he grew up in a terrible home with (too many) siblings on an Amish farm. Despite our cultural differences we immediately bonded over our love for food and shared our fondness for taking long walks. He was a great listener even though I couldn't always understand him the way he understood me. When I practiced my instrument he would sing along when he felt inspired. When I got married he welcomed my husband immediately like he had always been part of the family.

I found my unlikely friendship with a pup named Maui who passed away suddenly a couple years ago and not a day went by without me missing the bond we shared. Thank you chingu for being there even on days when I looked and smelled the worst. Your unconditional love would make you any man's best friend.

Ohhh, thank you for sharing your story. I wish I could have such an unconventional friend, let him be a man or a woman, young or older... But no, not even a sign of such. Sometimes I think that is why we love dramaland so much, because there we get our friendships, self made families, sometimes economic success and once in a while legendary OTPs.
I mean, if they don't exist in real life, fiction can be a substitute for a while.

Congrats on a great piece of writing, @gadis! I’m still getting through Prison Playbook and haven’t made it to Beobja/Je-Hyuk’s bromance, but I’ll certainly look forward to it!

Thank you, ally.
Their bromance is the slow-burn kind, which is just as satisfying as watching our favorite OTP falling for each other.

I loved the frenemies in Jealousy Incarnate too @gadis! I could have watched a whole drama with just them.

Jealousy Incarnate really was a lovely friendship. It was great to watch them realize that they each were so similar and that they really understood each other. It felt very relatable to me. My best friend and I are similar, the first year we knew each other, we constantly argued, mostly because we had so much in common that it was easy to pick on each other's flaws. But one day I saw someone arguing with her about a personal choice she made (that I would have likely made myself), so I went over and backed her up. It wasn't immediate friendship, but it did smooth over a few misunderstandings. Ten years later, and we still talk every day, even though we now live in different states!

Great article! Thank you for mentioning jugglers. I admit that the story was full of clichés but the ex- father -in- law son- in -law relationship was a breath of fresh air. I was so surprised when their connection was revealed.
As for SPL, I think the entire drama was filled with unusual friendships in the sense that all of them were in prison (though some were wrongfully accused or took the blame or for other minor offenses) but all of them were such wonderful characters that it was hard to accept they were criminals at some point. Not only between themselves, but also the friendship they had with the guards. Lt paeng was the kindest person I've ever seen. .maybe even more than junho. Of course even capt yoo and the other guard whose life he saved (I can't remember his name).every time he gave yoo a finger heart or a wink or whisked him away for chicken, it was too cute! And of course baldy (sorry forgot his name too) and je hyuk. How a little bit of kindness changed him completely. That entire series was a tribute to unusual friendships in my opinion.

Agreed on Wise Prison Life as a tribute to unusual friendships. I did want to write an entire post only about that drama, but I might only ended up with rambling fangirling by the end. Hehe... So I chose one that's the most understated and unexpected. Also, it's kinda cute that Jun-ho get another 'exasperating' little brother to take care of beside Joon-dol.

Beautifully written, @gadis, and love all the quirky friendships you feature here! That screencap of Chi-won & VP Do makes me want to squishhhhh them, why are they so cute ><
Have just realised that almost all of them are ex-something, it's kinda nice to think that through a wrong relationship, you can still gain a friend.

Now that you mention it, that's true. Maybe we should take note from this and try to be more optimistic when we face another failed relationship. Maybe the universe is just telling us that we simply need to change the nature of our relationship with them. Who knows? Maybe we could end up finding our lifetime best friend.

@gadis Loved the central focus on unexpected and sometimes bizarre friendships!

The first one that came to mind was Jugglers’ Nam Chi-won and Vice President Do. In the middle of so many annoying, frustratingly oppressive, and intentionally hurtful in-laws, their little relationship brought such a delight to my watching experience.

Nam Chi-won + Vice President Do's relationship also stood out for me. It was intriguing to see a father-in-law who still supported his ex son-in-law and his emotional journey in drama world. There was also this one scene where he mentioned how torn and confused he was as to whether, he should support Chi-Won in falling in love again or his daughter who was trying to amend her broken relationship.

I've yet to watch Smart Prison Living but my anticipating keeps rising!

I too was surprised by the blossoming friendship route taken by Jealousy Incarnate when the show could have easily gone into cliche throat-ripping, hair-pulling territory.

Another unexpected friendship (bromance) was between Sung-ryong and Yul in Chief Kim. All their animosity simmered down as they partnered up to fight corruption.
Yul went from these expressions of annoyance at Chief Kim:

ah, you made me miss marriage not dating, that's one of the rom-coms I still remember till now, I love Jang-mi and Hoon-dong XD

Also who could forget the lovely boss- employee friendship in Jugglers. Good relationship with (ex) in-laws is such a scarcity in dramaland.

i enjoyed reading all the unlikely friendships and I might even continue jealousy incarnate now :)

I think this is the first write up where I haven't watched any of the shows mentioned. I enjoyed it anyway. I love seeing people who can put aside their differences and history to become friends.
Odd kdrama friendships I've seen are in Chief Kim, Shopping King Louis, and I'm Not A Robot. Those are some pretty odd yet iconic ones for me.

I love unusual beginnings for friendships ~ likely because that is how I made my best friends. 😊 One is the ex girlfriend of my brother, who emailed me trying to figure out what had gone wrong. I emailed her back out of pity, never expecting to hear from her again and rather mad she was using me. Hundreds of emails and phone calls and over a decade later, we are the first friend we each contact about life changes, and if two weeks go by without talking something is wrong. Oh, and we have never lived in the same state (much less same town). It’s a friendship I would never change. 😊😊😊
