[Best Friends Forever] The Joseon Jalgeum Quartet

By @kimchiturka

The first Korean drama I watched was Sungkyunkwan Scandal, and even after dozens and dozens of dramas that followed (and quite a few that took over the title of Best Drama of My Life from it), it still holds a special place in my memory. And that’s not only due to sentimental reasons as my first K-drama, but also (as all of those who have seen it know) because it truly was a great series.

The initial pull for me was the cross-dressing trope. I’ve been a sucker for that one since childhood, so if there is a story about a girl posing as a man, I will most definitely read it or watch it, period. After a few episodes, I even managed to get onboard with the love story and somehow suspend my disbelief that someone would fall for Lee Sun-joon over Moon Jae-shin (Nice to meet you, my first and only Second Lead Syndrome, let’s never see each other again, thank you!).

But whenever I remember Sungkyunkwan now, it’s not really the gender-bender shenanigans that first come to my mind, nor the cute love story, nor even that second lead heartbreak. Instead, the first thing I always think of is how awesome all the main characters were and how beautifully their friendship was depicted. So when I saw this month’s theme, my thoughts flew right past the wonderful Because This Life Is Our First’s girlfriends and all the other great slice-of-life drama friendships out there, and instead they landed on the threshold of my K-drama viewing experience—the adorable friendships of “Joseon F4.” So, what was so great about it?

Well first, all members of the “Jalgeum Quartet” were well-developed characters, interesting in their own right, and each of them was presented with a compelling backstory. And there can be no great relationships of any kind without great characters to have them, is it not so?

Second is the fact that—putting aside the love story which naturally took a significant amount of screen time—all one-on-one relationships inside of this foursome were extremely well-drawn and depicted with equal care, which truly made the viewers believe that every character had a special relationship with the other three. For me, this is what makes this one stand out from many other dramas with a similar group of friends.

Too often, the second guy appears to be there only to spark jealousy in the first lead, and the female lead barely perceives his existence (SO annoying), while the third guy may be only slightly more than comical relief (and everybody treats him almost as some random person they just met). Even when the drama informs you that those boys are the best of friends, and when the girl states her appreciation for the second or third guy, you just don’t feel it.

But in Sungkyunkwan, regardless of who eventually fell in love with whom, every relationship that Yoon-hee formed with each of the three boys felt like a real friendship and I had no problem in feeling and believing all of it: the bickering friendship-turned-to-love between her and Sun-joon, the sincere and warm friendship between her and Jae-shin (only enhanced by his one-sided crush), the long-term under-the-radar bromance between Jae-shin and Yong-ha, the affectionate, easygoing Yong-ha’s attitude towards both Sun-joon and Yoon-hee, and finally, the reluctant budding bromance between Jae-shin and Sun-joon.

It is still impossible for me to decide on my favorite pair here, because each of those particular friendships had something that distinguished it from others, all while sharing a strong group bound. Isn’t that exactly what happens in real life? If we are lucky to have more than one friend we cherish and hang out with, we never have entirely same feeling while interacting with each of them separately.

And finally, being a sageuk and all, there was the epic factor: a whole pile of heart-tugging, goosebump-inducing moments that showcased their caring for one another in genuinely epic ways. Like early in the show when Jae-shin lights the extinguished fires on the archery ground at night for Sun-joon, who has been practicing shooting that whole day and refuses to stop. Jae-shin does this even though at that point in the story, he doesn’t like Sun-joon at all, but Sun-joon’s determination to stick to his principles and practice through his injury makes Jae-shin start to respect him. I’ll never forget when those flaming arrows landed—my first hyperventilation and jumping-on-the-couch moment!

Or later in the show, when these two have finally become friends, and Jae-shin gets on his knees in front of his father to beg him to spare Sun-joon from being a tool in his revenge, even though avenging his brother’s death was the only thing Jae-shin thought about since childhood. Goosebumps… OR when Jae-shin is wounded during his nightly rebel activities and Yoon-hee and Yong-ha hide him and take care of him… OR at the end of the series, when all three boys throw themselves down on their knees before the king to beg for Yoon-hee’s life.

Although now I may have other dramas that I would call my favorites before Sungkyunkwan, if you say “gorgeous drama friendship,” I will always think of this first:

I really need to watch this, it seems. What a fun read! And the screen caps you chose are adorable.

Do watch it you'll love it. It has all the tropes gender-bender, cohabitation, reverse harem, bromance and bickering to love romance. :)

1. You're Beautiful (watched that one after SKK because I was looking for cross-dressing again :) )
2. Healer
3. Arang and the Magistrate / Master's Sun

Yes, definitely watch Master's Sun! :) And You're Beautiful is possibly not for everyone's taste, but I adore it (for me it's just so hilarious and touching at the same time) - even though it is one of those with not-so-great depiction of friendships :).

My dilemma this last weekend: Moonlight Drawn by Clouds vs Sungkyunkwan Scandal.
I opted for the former so of course there's a passionate ode to the latter. Well, I didn't need a life or anything.
*Moves to top of list*

Do watch this drama I'm sure you'll love it. MDBC has it's own feels but Sungkyunkwan scandal is much more better. You'll fall in love with each character. :)

I agree. MDBC was cute, but character-wise it resembled too much Sungkyunkwan and than it somehow fell a bit flat compared to it - SKKS felt much warmer.

MDBC's OTP is more adorable and shippable, but if you're into friendships and the fuzzy feels of school dramas, then SKKS would be the drama to pick. SKKS's heroine also happens to be one of my favorite kdrama heroines.

I couldn't ship MDBCs at all. The power imbalance, the dead fish kisses, the utterly-useless heroine. He loved her because she was pretty and in his proximity and because the whole 'forbidden love' thing made it seem exciting. He would have been much better off with the second female lead who was at least smart and capable.

Aww, I haven't watched this drama in ages. I had thought it was gonna be all fluff, but it turned out to be a great drama. (THE BROMANCE WAS EPIC! I miss you, Song Joong Ki!) Your post brings back good memories, @kimchiturka. Thank you for the write-up. ^^

Oh, I remember that moment when Jae-shin lit the arrows for Sun-joon too. Internal aww.

This Joseon Jalgeum quartet will always be one of very favourite friendships. (I'll never forget the numerous MVs showing the bromances... which I sometimes suspect I liked more than the main romance.)

Yes yes yes. Except for anything in reference to the ending as i never saw the last handful of episodes. Because apparently i had second led syndrome so hard that when they finally got together i stopped watching. I didn’t have a name for it then because i thought i was above it all and man i was already a kdrama veteran. I had managed to watch most dramas through at the time before that show. Because for the sake of drama watching i was going to push through (most dramas). Alas i have no regret stopping where i did and it has lead me down the dark alleyways of quiting other dramas midway (i.e. my secret romance). But gosh i would watch it all over again for the bromance and bonding and squeals and friendship and the unrequited second lead to AGAIN drop it before it ends 🙋🏾‍♀️

Wonderfully written.
it's one among my favorite dramas though I've not watched it but I've read the recaps more then dozens of time over the years.
All the characters had depth in them but I seriously agree with you that we can't choose who was the favorite here.
The second lead syndrome is damn too high here.
To all the beanies who have not watched SUNGKYUNKWAN SCANDAL do watch it and I assure you that you'll love it more then modern dramas even if you're not into sageuk dramas.

Good news for all Song joong ki fans. He's considering a period drama from the writers of "Tree with deep roots" and "Queen seondeok".
His cameo was awesome and memorable in Tree with deep roots.
I hope he takes up the drama. He is good in Sageuk roles too.

I really loved this drama but my second lead syndrom was very strong. In term acting, YAI was so better than Yoonchun and I prefered his character, he was more interesting.

But it's their friendship was great, funny and cute. I can't forget the picture when they all were walking in the street like F4 from Joseon :D

Ahh... SKK scandal!! My fave saeguk drama!! This drama is the reason for my ultimate girl crush to Park Min Young... I like Mickey in here too, which is why I didn't have second lead sindrome. I like Sun Joon eventho he is more uptight in the drama. In the novel, Sun Joon is more charming and even he initiates 18+ (ehem...) steamy romance with Yoon Hee. LOL!! Sadly, the ending of SKK scandal drama was not that good, but still enough for me to love it until now..

I'm so glad all you Beanies here liked it! :) SKK is definitely a must-watch for me – it is exactly as Javabeans and Girlfriday wrote in the Ratings – „so cute and well done“. And not just in the friendship department - in the aspect of depicting cross-dressing in Joseon, it is by far the best drama I saw. And it is true, it really does lose some steam towards the end, but for me, it was still a good ending and the last episode had its share of epic-ness. :D Also, there were some truly poignant parent-child moments there and those were my second favorite thing about this drama - but that wasn't the theme here so I didn't include it in the text.

«Too often, the second guy appears to be there only to spark jealousy in the first lead, and the female lead barely perceives his existence (SO annoying), while the third guy may be only slightly more than comical relief».... wait, here are you talking about "You are beautiful"???? 😂😂😂😂
I have not watch this drama, so I don't know if it comes close to YAB somehow (I hope not, because I plan to watch it one day), but I can see that it has in common three boys and a girl dressed like a boy. Hum... I can only be glad here we are talking about real friendship, which is something YAB lacked totally.
Thank you for this post. It renew my decision to watch this show. 😅

Yes, in fact I WAS thinking about YAB, and The Flower Boy Next Door, and The Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, and probably above anything else - Boys Over Flowers. And yes, SKK really has very little in common with YAB (though I actually loved YAB despite it being lacking in the friends department, because to me it was hilarious and I found the couple adorable, go figure :D )

There is everything in this world!!! 😂
My best friend also loves YAB and she is a psychologist!! (I don't get it). She made me watch it, but I didn't like it; PSY was a kind of a doormat there, and her character and UEE's character made me hate these two actresses for a long time. For me it wasn't that funny either. But then again, there is everything in this world, LOL!!! 😂😂😂😂

You expressed the perfection of these friendships perfectly! I’m rewatching this show again right now, and while I may fast forward through the politics the friendships between the quarter hold up wonderfully through the years of drama watching ~~~ 🤗🤗🤗
It was my third kdrama and first sageuk too, and the first I watched with that “epic” factor you described so well. Thank you @turka

This is one of my favorite dramas of all time! ♥

As you said, each character of the quartet was so compelling in their own right, I also had a problem picking which one was my fave. They weren't there just to fill-in the numbers (since 4 seems to be the magic number for friends), each of the characters were so memorable that they could each have their own drama spin-off and I'd be totally interested

This was a lovely post! You made me want to rewatch this drama again! It's been 5+ years since I watched it, but like you, I only have fond memories for the drama, no doubt because the wonderful friendships you wrote about here.
I also remember this drama as the one that made me go over my internet limit at the time :P (back when I was a student and had a measly usage limit, unlike now)

Viewers usually focus on the romance in this drama and on the wonderful bromance between Jaeshin and Yongha, so it was awesome that you wrote about all 4 as individuals and as a quartet. I appreciated how all 4 were intelligent and looked out for each other.
